  1. I thought Zepp was being cheeky. This takes it to another level if also being cheeky.
  2. Could you elaborate on this further? What are some examples? A declining playoff contender is not the same as an up and comer. We have preached about insulating our young guys. This goes into potentially our first playoff experience with this young group. Tanev is our top PK guy, who replaces that suddenly going into the grind? Hughes may make his defensive partnership look good, but Tanev is a good compliment. You want to go into the playoffs with Rafferty who doesn't compliment Hughes' skill set or have a diminutive (but heart of a lion) Stecher? So we are left with Myers and maybe Tryamkin who would potentially join in late March or April. Myers looks better with a defensive adequate partner too.
  3. I think development and not having the expectation that every player is going to be a game changer as soon as they step on the ice are big factors. Benning brought in "overpaid" vets to insulate our your group and spent during our "rebuild" years to accomplish this and we are reaping the rewards. All top end picks are talented players, but almost all aside from actual generational talent will require a bit more development such as having another year or two before making the jump or not be relied upon heavy minutes until they work on aspects of their game that needs improvement.
  4. Another prime example for tank nation that we could get 10 1st overall picks, but that won't necessarily make a successful team. And also we don't have to constantly sell UFAs for picks. We can only have so many prospects and players in the system. At some point it's time to develop what we have and push forward rather than stay stagnant.
  5. Do you not think Tanev has contributed to where we are today? He isn't some insignificant piece. Whether he helps us get the rest of the way to the playoffs or wins us a Cup isn't important (although I do think he would be a key part still, especially considering he's our top PK defender and a good balance to Hughes with his decent skating and high IQ) because he is part of the team. The players like him. If the entire team is going to win, then he's very much part of the team. No one downgrades their team heading into the playoffs. You go in with the best team moving forward. Every year counts as you don't know which year will be the one, you don't throw away any opportunities. When you hear Cinderella stories or 8th place teams winning the Cup, I doubt those teams were selling assets because they didn't think this would be their year anyway. Having the best playoff experience is going to outweigh whatever draft picks we are going to get who may or may not even pan out. We are getting past that window of needing to sell UFAs. As long as Benning and crew keep hitting on late round picks (which we seem to be doing a fine job if so far), then it doesn't matter how many picks are added. Our prospect pool is filling up so we can push forward rather than rebuild forever. I agree those players need to play and to see what we've got in them, but the playoff drive and playoffs is not the time to do this unless we have injuries or what not which opens up the opportunity for them. This is how you build a positive team culture (not selling away good team guys for "assets") and grow from experience (best possible team). I should also add in part of the consideration is that if we make the playoffs, we are giving up our 1st. Might as well try and do the best we can to lower that pick are far as we can as well.
  6. Benn is currently not in the top 6 because he hasn't shown enough. Tryamkin might not join us until late March or April if he even gets released from his contract to play this season and he would coming to a "new" team. Rafferty hasn't proven anything at the NHL level and his biggest knock has been that he needs to improve defensively as per Johnson. Chatfield is a decent call up option at best right now. So while they may not be enough of a downgrade for us to possibly miss the playoffs, it could lead to us backing into the playoffs rather than going in with full control. Also how many teams have you seen heading into the playoffs actually choose to downgrade their roster? Having Tanev gives the best chance of success. Imagine having all that depth you listed, plus a Tanev. You don't plan on him potentially getting injured and potentially any player could get injured (knock on wood). The goal for the playoffs this year (aside from actually trying to win the damn thing) is to gauge our team in a playoff situation, so having the best chance to succeed will give us the best gauge on where we need to improve and tweak for the following season. Any year you make the playoffs could be the year, so you don't waste them. My viewpoint is that most playoff bound teams acquire rentals anyway. So Tanev may potentially be our "playoff rental" that we don't have to pay an asset for.
  7. If the team is rolling, then that's the D group we roll with. Tryamkin is good depth and roster limits will be lifted come April. We get an injury or need a spark, I'd much rather have Tryamkin than no Tryamkin. Especially if we face a heavy team, then he could replace Stecher.
  8. Sit him? He played about 14:30. His season average is 12:50. Tonight's minutes have been right around how much he's played in the last 10 games aside from a couple of games where he's been given more minutes. This wasn't demotion for Jake, it was a minor shakeup cause the team was flat. Not that surprising considering its the 3rd game of a road trip and a back to back morning games weekend. Our record in the last 17 games speaks for itself. One loss where we showed resiliency and got a point against an Eastern team and suddenly our coach is no longer able to take us potentially to a Cup? The team is good, but the coaching gets some credit as the team isn't winning in spite of the coaches. The players have praised the coaching staff all year, they are certainly playing for them and each other right now.
  9. Honestly even though this team has been trending upwards for years and all the signs of improvement have been showing and even with the early results this year, there have been plenty of so called die hards still acting this way here. They're only being shut up now. The funny part is that most of these people are the pro tank crowd and would've wanted us in a losing culture to gather as many high end 1sts as possible and thinking we will suddenly turn it around over night at the flick of a switch.
  10. With the expansion coming, I disagree that DiPietro is expendable. He's our insurance right now.
  11. And yet this is pretty much the whole premise of the pro-tank crowd.
  12. Shhh this is a trap to bring him back to this dysfunctional family.
  13. They are the bandwagon crew that will be saying they've been supporting this team all along when we make the playoffs. Until then, they're simply just waiting for the team to falter to pounce again.
  14. Not sure if the Loui haters could process it. Good thing we didn't waive him at the start of the year eh?
  15. To continue this, yes his KHL team would need to release him, but I believe we have him on our reserve list which would make him eligible to play even if he joins after the trade deadline. We signed Drew Shore a few seasons ago on Mar 12 and he was still eligible to play. Not sure about the playoffs though.
  16. We have seen a glimpse of Horvat in the playoffs and he was nearly a PPG guy. Can't wait to see this version of Horvat in the playoffs. Many of us have been saying Jake is more valuable in the playoffs, so can't wait to see how he performs too. Benning has said that he wants to see this team in the playoffs to gauge the team, so he's certainly hoping to get a look to assess. Also getting into the playoffs and going as far as possible helps lower the 1st that we gave up for Miller to hopefully end the whole nonsense worrying about us giving up a lottery pick next year. As for the topic, we have the size to handle the playoffs. We just don't need to play that aggressive style as that hasn't been our game and not what has been successful for us (the fact that we may even make the playoffs), so I don't expect us to change. A slight uptick in intensity, but a more controlled emotion game and staying focused.
  17. Where did you hear this? I must've missed it.
  18. Raffi Torres may be Virtanen but less dirty. More likely to be Ferland though if he returns healthy. Lapierre is Roussel for the pest side of things, but I would say more like Beagle in terms of their roles. I'm more curious as to who the unexpected heroes would be. Who's going to score the clutch goals? Who's going to get that goal off the stanchion? Virtanen seems like another prime candidate here. Myers might be another. Maybe LE will score a series winner (or at least bury a game with an empty netter) and we can all stop talking about how he's a waste of cap space.
  19. Schaller needs to play his game. Neither Bailey or MacEwen are going to replace his energy either. Sutter may be the better PKer, but we are short one now and Schalotov has been a top PK guy for us when he's in the lineup.
  20. Not according to NHL.com website. I can't recollect a time he was on the PK in recent games unless he was just finishing up a PK shift to start onto the next shift which usually meant having the top line back out because they were sitting for a couple of minutes.
  21. He's played 1 min of shorthanded time this year (or a nice average of rounded up 1 second per game). To put it into perspective, Brock has the same PK time and EP has had more. So yes you would be wrong If anything, you should've brought up Roussel as an option for the PK (which I had forgotten about) as he was utilized there in a secondary role the last couple of seasons, but hasn't been on it this year for some reason.
