  1. Stecher played the least minutes last game, about 30 seconds less than Fantenberg. He's getting some shifts with Edler, possibly because he's the freshest body and he is reliable, but that doesn't make him a top 4 dman. He's good as a part time top 4 guy and is worth more than the league minimum guys. I have pretty high hopes for Tryamkin to be able to fill a top 4 dman role, maybe around 18-19 min average per game. We make the playoffs this year and we don't have to worry about that 1st for next year. Which IMO is why we keep our depth (eg Tanev) and gives a serious chance at making it.
  2. I'm not suggesting he should take a pay cut because he's not worth the salary, although I think he's worth more around the 2 million mark than 2.5+ million. I was suggesting a pay cut to allow us to fit him into our cap space.
  3. Rafferty hasn't earned that protection spot yet IMO, not until we have seen what he can do in the NHL. Will be interesting if they want to fork out Myers' bonus that is due on July 1st of that expansion year.
  4. A couple of factors for Myers getting exposed. Does Tryamkin need to be protected? How will Rafferty look at the NHL level? And will we acquire anyone else that needs to be protected? Losing a top 4 RD would be a bit of a hit. We have Woo, but he could be a few years away. Tanev and Stecher may not be here. There's the option of moving Quinn to the right, but then with Tryamkin as well, that puts 5 lefties on defense. I like that we have the option, but I'm not so certain about it unless we are banking on him being a sacrificial exposure and assuming he would get taken. If Myers does get taken and someone move on from LE. I think we could retain Pearson assuming he isn't looking for a massive payout. If he takes 4.5 for like 4 years or something, then that's very workable.
  5. Weaker than EP, what a dud.
  6. Ah for some reason I thought his contract expires this off season. That could help us out in "protecting" him. Only concern is the chemistry with Bo and even though we have some good up an comers, it's hard to break up something that is working. Pearson is also one of those guys that stands up for his teammates. So say we protect Lind, still leaves opens up a tough decision should we add another player or if someone like Motte breaks out. I'm not so worried about losing a forward, but I think that's where our next "best" talent will come from if not goaltending (say we make a trade to move Demko or not re-sign Marky).
  7. The goalie issue is ongoing for sure. A lot depends on how this off season goes. There are several teams where I don't think there's a lot worth protecting and they could snatch up a Holtby or trade for a potentially exposed goalie (maybe where we snatch up a 1st for Demko assuming we go with Markstrom) and water down the market. Going through the teams currently, I project the best goalies that may be available are Martin Jones, Matt Murray, an aging Dubnyk and of course Demko. I would also put Raanta as a potential on this list. If they could fill their needs with the other teams, then I could very well see them wanting Demko from this list and I would pick up Jones if he's available too. Our D is fine with the flexibility and potential expansion shield of Myers (which isn't far from "home" if he wanted to be near Kelowna and benefits us cap-wise, but tough to lose a top 4 RD, although we have some options to mitigate the loss). Currently it is being shown that Tryamkin doesn't need protection, but I have a feeling that if he returns that he might need to be. So OJ protected for sure and possibly Rafferty given a showing between this year and next. If Tryamkin also needs to be protected, Myers is exposed. If we sign/trade for another legit dman, then Rafferty could be exposed too. I'd be curious if Seattle has interest in someone like Brisebois depending on his progression. I think we are likely exposing a decent forward. I think a factor is where does Pearson fit. He may also be signed and utilized as an expansion shield, but if he's clicking well with Horvat it may be tough. I see us protecting 6 guys for sure (Petey, Boeser, Horvat, Miller, Virtanen and Gaudette). So that last spot goes to Pearson or potentially Lind IMO. This is barring us making any moves for a player we intending on keeping as well. That exposes players like Roussel (who could be tough to play against), Motte (solid cheap energy player with potentially some hidden offensive potential), MacEwen and Gadjovich (if they're looking for younger guys with size to build a bigger team like Vegas did).
  8. If we learned anything from the Vegas draft was that they didn't necessarily go after BPA. They targetted players they could trade as well. They took on cap dumps for picks. So it'll be interesting to see who's available to be drafted when the lists come out. We may actually have a decent forward available assuming we decide to protect Lind.
  9. Maybe they throw Tkachuk out on the ice alone. Although we have such good character players, Petey and Quinn will probably volunteer to play with him, so he isn't left out.
  10. I wonder if the change to NHL sized rinks this year had any effects on his play. If so, that bodes well for us.
  11. Processing the game required development, not uncommon to young dmen adjusting to the highest league in the world. Unfortunately he didn't stay to develop, but that's not to say he hasn't improved in the KHL (arguably the next best league in the world). Icing the puck is a safe play and shouldn't necessarily be considered a poor decision, but I know what you're trying to say. Sometimes we are caught trying to be too cute with the puck, so simplifying things sometimes is the way to go and if we ice it, it's a good thing we have some strong faceoff men on our team. As for conditioning, he's been playing 21+ mins a night this season. Can't imagine having poor conditioning would allow this. He's been viewed as a leader and even given captaincy at one point which also alludes to the idea that he's probably not a lazy guy and is an example of hard work and character. He has adjusted his game to be more defensive to the point where he's the go-to PK RD (which suits taking over Tanev's spot). He is a tough guy to handle physically, but he's not going to be a goon. Green seems to like to play more controlled games, which is probably why his agent continues to reiterate the fact that the team has a new coaching staff, so he must be more confident that he will like the systems implemented now. Tryamkin has admitted that he left because wasn't really mature enough to make the adjustment here, but has grown since and hopefully with some experience of being here that he will transition and adapt easier and quicker in his return.
  12. Reinprecht was once Canucks property. Never played a game for the Canucks, just the affiliate Wolves, but joined the Ice Tigers the following season.
  13. Tryamkin. If we are serious about the playoffs though, then I wouldn't trade Tanev. Keep him as a free "rental" and gives us the best chance at winning, especially if Tryamkin returns as well. However that makes Stecher expendable. Unless a deal can be made where he takes a paycut to stay, I'd trade him to Toronto (or wherever) for a 3rd round pick (squeeze a 2nd if a team is desperate). Last thing we need now are even more wingers. Kapanen is good, but we need to work out what to do with our glut of forwards currently before hurting the depth on defense to upgrade in an overloaded position.
  14. A testament to our drafting, scouting, development and the process to build the quality depth to not rely on UFAs as much. This couldn't have happened overnight especially at the start point of basically no feasible prospects in the system. Stop gaps were needed to ice a team and create competition to develop prospects. The rate of this progress has impressed me when compared to other teams that have been in a low state much longer and some still struggling to find success.
  15. People just love to complain, just as we are complaining about the complainers lol I think the one think that irks me that before when someone was a 10 time NHL all star if felt like that meant something like they were actually the best in the league, but maybe when I was younger I didn't see all the politics behind it. Now it just seems so gimmicky and not representative of the actual best players of that current season which seems to take away from the honour of being named an all star.
  16. Maybe the heavier players have higher flexes to their stick that gives them extra oomph to their shots? Hopefully EP surprises some people, but doubtful anyone beats Weber.
  17. Which is why I was suggesting that Stecher would have to take a pay cut if he wants to stay. He is in a replaceable spot unfortunately, so unlikely he gets paid well here or elsewhere, so up to him if he wants to stay in this city or give it a go on another team if they're willing.
  18. If we don't trade him, this is most likely the route we take as we did with Hutton. Stecher is unfortunately in a very replaceable spot. He's all heart and I'd hate to see him go, but if he wants north of his current salary, we can't afford it and not sure if it can justified. I agree that he's slightly overpaid, but not much. I think a 2 million per year deal is fair if he's willing to take that to stay here. If not then I wish him the best with his future team.
  19. #context Even more impressive, he's made the list twice! Or wait, he's got the lowest +/- on the list, surely someone's gonna think he's a bust on that merit.
  20. I think someone posted earlier that because he started his college career later, he could be UFA as soon as the end of next season and not necessarily finish his college degree first.
  21. We have Benn and Fantenberg that can play a similar role. So even if we could get him with a 4th or whatever, I'd rather just keep the pick (especially with our drafting of late). I'm not opposed to kicking the tires on him as a UFA to see the cost and if it's worth trying to move Benn. As an LD, he's not replacing Edler or Hughes, so there's not much room for him. We need room for OJ, Rathbone and even Brisebois to get some looks at LD too. Of course there's the possibility of shifting Hughes to RD, so for next season: Edler-Hughes Dillon-Myers Benn(maybe Rathbone or OJ)-Tryamkin Brisebois/Chatfield But that puts a couple of left handed guys on the right side. Whatever the case, don't think we need to be buyers at the deadline unless we can recoup those picks through other trades (eg Leivo/Stecher/etc being moved).
