He's been getting about 12 minutes a night the last couple of games. Coaches are trusting him more. Not bad for an 18 year old in arguably the next best league after the NHL.

There's always Podkolzin and his poor development in Russia.

[Waivers] David Backes, Luke Schenn

Schenn said Vancouver offered him a one-year deal to stay, but he couldn’t pass up the chance to go to Tampa Bay. https://canucksarmy.com/2019/07/17/luke-schenn-opens-up-about-choosing-lightning-over-canucks/ -

No need for Schenn, why bother with any risk even if it's low? -

He left Montreal for the same offer. He was well liked in Montreal (not so much if he joins Toronto). I'm sure he would be happy to play in general, but the Leafs of all teams, damn. That 1st round exit won't be much of a run. -

How is this a fine and not Nurse's comedy act earlier this season? Penalty sure, but there have been more egregious embellishments. -

I bet he goes for a bit cheaper than expected. Teams know they probably can't afford to re-sign him. So they might be looking for a close to NHL ready prospect like Brisebois. So I guess it depends if that is something moderately significant. -
[Report] Minnesota to become sellers

Well I guess they'll miss him enough to sell him potentially (once again). He just doesn't seem like a player that provides much beyond offense and he isn't that stellar offensively. Top 6 point producer for sure at this point, but he has to hit those numbers or he's ineffective. 4 year risk needing his to hit those marks or try to figure out what to do with him on a new team if he's traded. He had a good contract year and has gone back a bit since. Not very good playoff numbers either. -

And adding Zucker might not make that any better, especially if he doesn't pan out like they hope. He's bordering on the Spooner/Gagner/Baertschi level in that he has to produce 50+ points or he's relatively useless otherwise. For 5.5 million a season, he better work out for whichever team that takes him on or he could be a massive burden for 4 more years (and with Minni trying to offload him several times now). -

But they can't just replace Brodie with anyone. I was told by mll that Guerin isn't looking for any wingers in return because they want to bring up Kaprizov, but perhaps Bennett is younger and could be of interest. They have a projected 15 million in cap space next season and still need to sign 4 forward, 4 dmen and a goalie. If they take on Zucker, that doesn't leave a lot of room for depth, which includes losses of Hamonic and Brodie on defense. -

Not sure how Edmonton or Calgary have the cap space to acquire him especially when looking ahead into the future. -

I know someone who went to high school with Dillon. He apparently was a scrawny kid, but he sure has grown up and filled out now. -

Benn leaves Montreal as a fan favourite to take the same contract offer to sign with his hometown team only to be traded in less than a season and to Toronto of all places (rival of Montreal and most locals likely have something against Toronto). I think we could do better for Benn. -

Well if that's how he feels, then good luck to him selling Zucker. Personally I'm not even that interested unless we can get him for cheap. Dumba is someone I could see teams having interest and maybe some of their under 24 forwards (which is Guerin selling that there is interest in his players). There are very few teams that can take on 5.5 million in cap for 4 years and give up picks to do so because other teams also have to consider how it affects their cap beyond this season just like Minni is concerned. Zucker provides very little else beyond his maybe 50 points a season. He's no JT Miller in value. -
We can't afford Barrie. He's very concerned about how his UFA season goes so he wants to get paid. I have no interest in him. I rather consider moving Quinn to the right side and sign Dillon if we are to go the UFA route. I don't think we can afford Tanev unless he signs a team friendly deal of no more than 4.5 million. For someone as often injured as he is, he's going to want more than 2 years if he can and will take the best offer for him (barring him wanting to stay here like Edler). If we had traded him last year, we wouldn't have had his experience to help with Hughes at the start of the season, so I'm fine with us not trading him and same goes for this season if we are serious about the playoffs. In this scenario, I see Tryamkin replacing Stecher's spot, but I think he gets bigger minutes once he's comfortable here. He left us as a bottom pairing guy, but he has developed and grown his game since (for those that followed him in his thread). So I see no reason that he couldn't handle between 18-20 minutes here which is top 4 minutes. He plays 21+ minutes a night in the KHL for those worried about conditioning and he's been their top PK guy and become sort of a defensive dman which conveniently could replace Tanev's spot.

Baer is already in the minors. Not many teams can take on 5.5 million in cap for Zucker without giving something back to make it feasible. I think the buyers market is slim this year with limited cap space and teams have to commit to Zucker for 4 years. -

We need to sell some of our wingers for cheap and water down the market. Then trade Baer for Zucker with retention and give them a 3rd round pick or something in addition. Rask is someone I would be interested in as well as I think there's more to his game than in his time with Minni, but there also has to be retention involved. Can't see us getting Dumba for cheaper than Boeser and Dumba isn't the same player he once was (neither is Boeser really it seems, but he's still producing), so not sure if I'm committed to making that move. If we do then Tanev is gone as well to regain back any lost assets in a trade. -

Stecher played 18+ minutes last night. Why would we downgrade our roster at this point if we are thinking about the playoffs? If we get Tryamkin back this season, then someone like Schenn is moot anyway. This won't make Hughes any happier than he is already playing top 4 minutes and excelling in the league. I appreciate Schenn for helping Hughes ease into the league, but we don't have much further use for him since we have Fantenberg already who is younger and a better skater and currently making a mark on the team forcing Benn to sit. -

Schenn went for greener pastures in hopes for a chance to win a Cup. We "revived" his career and he moved on. I had wished him the best, but we made an offer (probably takes over Fantenberg's spot with more opportunity here) and he left, so we are moving on. He likely clears waivers anyway. I appreciate what he did for Hughes as he entered the league, but that time is done. -

Probably should thank LA and Detroit for allowing us to bump up our goals for this season. In the end the crazy games seem to have balanced out for us either way and we are still coming out on top. -

People mock scoring EN goals (especially LE) and make them sound like a piece of cake. How quickly did they forget that it wasn't long ago that we could barely convert EN goals. We are showing that we can bury games and thus finishing them in regulation as well, which in turn is lesser mileage to not get forced into OT situations. We are defending leads in close games (need to have the same mentality when we have bigger leads and not get too confident) and making sure the games are out of reach. This has been led by our captain, a hard working winger in Pearson and a player fighting for his life in LE. Not saying LE is the sole reason, but this line has been much more dependable in many situations since he's been added to it. Have to give credit where it's due. -

I think this is a case of seeing what they want to see rather than what is actually happening out there. Eriksson isn't playing like a 6 million dollar player, but he's not simply riding the hot line, he's contributing. The line itself is arguably our best line in the last stretch and I say this because they haven't only been contributing offensively, but they are playing shutdown (and holding leads late in the game) as well and a key part of this is having LE on the line. People have been calling out for Bo to have consistent wingers and he's getting it now and they are doing well. Yet some still feel the need to break up the line and give Bo yet another winger to work with all over again and someone that should be eased back into the lineup to boot. Right now our 3rd line has been more sheltered and this is where Ferland should start until he gets back into the groove of things. -
We are clearly saving Rafferty to remain a rookie next year in the NHL in case we don't have our annual Calder candidate for next season. If Binnington could be in the running for Calder at his age, Rafferty could as well. Seriously though, I think we need to realize and understand that we actually are starting to build depth so we don't have to rush a guy like Rafferty as soon as he has some success. We can focus on developing him in his weaknesses and bring him in when he is more ready to stick in the NHL when he's up.
