  1. How many people thought Brogan Rafferty would ever be an NHL player at 21? Lockwood turns 22 by next season. He's got the speed and tenacity to be an NHL player, just has to stay healthy. We have invested in him, so I see no problem giving him an ELC and seeing if he can develop in Utica. If not then like you said, no loss, but there is still potential there and the Canucks must've seen something they liked to use a 3rd round pick on him.
  2. Motte was a good complimentary player in his line. Lockwood was as well when he had the linemates. Aside from that, you don't need to be a prolific goal scorer for the 4th line. Lockwood has speed and tenacity which are elements that Motte adds to the 4th line that makes it effective. Lockwood needs to overcome getting injured playing the style he wants, so hopefully he's been taking this extra year to work on what he needs to stay healthy. He wants to be here by all accounts, we drafted him. I can't see us not giving him a contract. The fact that he isn't putting up decent numbers will likely keep many NHL teams salivating over his UFA rights as well. Best case scenario for us is he takes an AHL contract, but I see no problem with giving him an ELC NHL deal as we have invested in him already and as long as we have the contract space.
  3. Not sure Quinn changes their fortunes that much, but it certainly changes ours to have that puck moving dman. Seider does look good and I wonder if he were available at our pick if we would've nabbed him. Detroit probably didn't want to trade down and find out. I'm very happy with the Podkolzin pick though.
  4. Again not debating on what Tkachuk is, I agree that his antics are shameful to the league. That doesn't take away a guy throwing haymakers at a guy down on the ice from being a dangerous act. People are calling Tkachuk dangerous and yet condone dangerous acts. I just find it contradictory. Kassian could've sent a message without going overboard. Both are goofs in this case, but it makes for entertaining hockey. A little more discipline from Kassian and maybe they also get the win on top of the message sent.
  5. And that's not the issue I've been debating. They are both dangerous acts. Yes both should be dealt with. Kassian was smiling because he was turtling, his actions by throwing haymakers while he was down suggested the rage fueled deal.
  6. I don't get this whole controlling his development thing. We drafted several college prospects that we have no control over their development and often they join our team at an even older age than when Pod can join us. What is wrong with him developing in a league that includes former NHLers? Because he's not already getting top 6 minutes as an 18 year old in a good league? He's already up to 3rd line minutes recently half way through the year and had been playing top 6 minutes in the VHL. If he doesn't hit top 6 minutes by this season, he's likely there by next year and have a full season of development there. They aren't rushing him just like how we shouldn't be rushing prospects here. A 2 year development plan is completely reasonable. Wasn't it just last season that people were complaining that Utica couldn't develop because Lind and Gadjovich weren't superstars after their 1st season in a men's league as 20 year olds? Now we are development gurus?
  7. Either he sits in the wings and soaks up NHL playoffs or he's a depth option in case of injuries. Or perhaps he's actually good enough and can step in. Makar walked right into Colorado's playoffs without any regular season games and no one was worried about him learning new systems or whatever and he got 6 points in 10 playoff games and defense is a much harder position to shelter. Language barrier may be there, but he sounded like he'd already committed to learning English as soon as he got drafted. He's getting more and more time in the KHL. Surely next season will be even more experience in arguably the next best league after the KHL. I should add that Quinn Hughes certainly has met Podkolzin as he was at the draft and there were videos of them meeting.
  8. Have to wonder how glad Quinn is that they didn't pick him.
  9. If I had to take a stab at it, the first one looks like Bob Probert. The rest are trickier, but maybe more context would help. Like is this a certain team or a general signed stick from some charity event or something?
  10. I'm not saying it's the only way to play. You're going way off base here now. I'm saying these types of players know how they are effective in their way. They embrace the hate. They want to be hated and booed. They love it. I have said that I don't want these players on my team, but I also know that should these players be on our team that they would be seen in a different light by many or have the actions "justified" somehow. They don't do those things every night. They play their game, but when they want to piss off the other team, they are ready to do so. They know who to target. As long as our fanbase continues to rage against Marchand, he's going to continue. And yes he has had skill, but he was never considered "elite" until recently. He simply used agitation as his additional "skill" to remain relevant while others choose to have other elements to their game. By your standard of making the world Junior team, so did Matt Cooke. Anyway all I've said from the start is that Kassian has been praised for his dangerous act. So I guess attempting to injure isn't so bad in some eyes as long as they can justify it. I'm not "defending" these players but I know why they do it. I'm actually one of the few that doesn't seem to condone dangerous acts from anyone.
  11. Hard to say because without that part of their game, they're just any other scoring winger. They don't play every game as dirty as they can be. They target games that can draw a lot of emotion which generally draws the focus on them rather than the task at hand of winning the game. Marchand wasn't always a top point getter and this is what he did to stick around in the league. He's only added the offensive element to his game, so should he stop what has gotten him this far? Often times we see gritty players shy away from the physical game because they feel they are more needed for their offense and then they get criticized for not playing physical anymore. I want these players to stop their antics, but I understand why they continue to do so. However there is a way to prevent them from being effective, but it's certainly hard in the heat of the moment which is why they continue to push and push until you break.
  12. Defend? I'm saying that's the game they play that makes them effective. I never said I liked the way they played. I've been saying, don't let them play their game and take away their effectiveness. If you're upset with them, then they are doing their jobs. I understand why they play their game, that is a far cry from defending them. About Claude, that's my point. People wanted to destroy him and yet he had a 1200+ game career. Less rat like players have survived fewer games. He knew his role and prepared for it. He knew players would be after him as his job was to get players off their games. How you negate this is to not let him get in your head by not giving them the opportunities to do their thing.
  13. Sole reason? Probably not. But they provided a role that drew the hate and caused distractions for the other team should they choose to engage. Regardless of Cups, many of those players have had long careers doing what they're doing because it works for them. Considering how many players hated them and for example Claude Lemieux could play 1200+ games without getting destroyed is remarkable, no?
  14. Yes but apparently you can be a rat and be generally disliked and still win cups. Don't them be effective by giving them opportunities to play their game. Players like him embrace the hate and "do what it takes" to win. I'm not saying I like it, but these players exist.
  15. Claude Lemieux played 1200+ games and won Cups. Tkachuk knows what makes him effective. Don't let him be effective.
  16. Targetting players that aren't involved in this situation to incite a reaction is no different than Tkachuk knowingly targetting a hot head. Kassian should be targetting Tkachuk and not other small players that can't defend themselves as retribution, which seems cowardly to me. And he's set the precedent that you can keep punching even if he's down.
  17. This is exactly my point. Different perspective. All the justification for our players just like if Tkachuk were a Canuck, people would be calling those hits hard nosed hockey and for Kassian to keep his head up or whatever. Tkachuk is simply playing the agitator role and whoever bites lets him do his job.
  18. That makes Kassian a dirty player no better than Tkachuk. Stooping down to his level makes things better? Wait for a good opportunity and give Tkachuk a taste of his own medicine or force to make a bad turnover with an "attempt" to hit him and score a goal. There are others ways about this. If Kassian is going to do this, then he's going to have to answer Lucic or whoever as it's unlikely Tkachuk being that guy anyway.
  19. I don't want to make it sound like I'm not a Canuck fan as I'm being questioned already, but Burrows has had hair pulling and biting incidents and Kesler has done a lot of dirty stick work (eg crosschecks into unprotected areas of the back). Surely our players have been called for charges before as well. We turn a blind eye on these things because they are "our" players. Kesler's antics often weren't called either because he would do it away from the play or when the refs weren't watching. They did more than just talk, but they were effective in what they did and teams that react to Tkachuk are also allowing him to be effective. There's a reason why he goes after guys like Kassian and Doughty.
  20. Tkachuk didn't target McDavid or Draisaitl. He knows Kassian is a hot head and would react the way he did. It was targetted in that sense. He goaded Kassian and it paid off cause they got the win. They let Tkachuk get in their heads. You don't give him the attention, there's nothing he can do, but you also have to be responsible and know he's on the ice and looking for "opportunities".
  21. You can look up my post history for your answer. All I can say is there is more than one Theo in the world. The Canucks aren't even involved in all this...
  22. I get it too. I understand the action. I just think calling out one player for being dangerous and then praising another for being dangerous is contradictory. That's all. I don't disagree with Kassian reacting, I think he went overboard, which in turn ended up costing the team the game rather than sparking his own team (as some would also suggest would happen should retribution happen).
  23. I think he would sort of be a Gaborik back in the Minni trap days. So maybe the offense would be stifled a bit, but he would be the driver of the offense almost solely and he's shown that he's capable of it.
  24. Almost as if agents are selfish scumbags that really don't help anyone but themselves.
  25. I think I'd commit to Petey long term. Agree that Quinn gets a bridge unless they want to both sign long term team friendly deals together.
