I guess we will find out if this stops Tkachuk from doing his thing soon enough. How he plays now is how he is "effective" so I doubt this changes anything. He will continue to goad them and surely the league brass will be in attendance to "prevent" a major blow up.
-
Yes the league is at fault. It's entertainment and ratings. Torts wanted more hate in the league and here it is. People are angry and yet people are enjoying this, so why should the NHL change anything? Entertainment needs villains. If we truly want dangerous plays out of the game, then why defend actions meant to injure another player like what Kassian did? All I'm saying is that it is contradictory to praise a dangerous act and complain about dangerous acts. Two wrongs don't make a right. I think both sides are buffoons and the league mishandled it as well, but yet the ratings for their next game will be through the roof supporting all of this, so I guess the league is getting their job done. Want to avoid a Bertuzzi incident, maybe the league should've suspended him long enough to miss the next game against the Flames. Seems like everyone is wrong here.
-
I never debated who was at fault here. I think it's contradictory to praise a dangerous act and complain about them in the same breath.
-
I would've praised Kassian as well, but I just think he went too far. I guess that's the differing opinions here. It's not about defending Tkachuk or thinking he doesn't "deserve" it. I just think that if the criticism is that Tkachuk is a dangerous player, then praising a dangerous act is contradictory. Tkachuk needs to be addressed for sure and the league needs to step in. Until then, it's entertainment to most and I'm sure Calgary fans loved the hits (assuming that if he were a Canuck, then we would love those hits as well especially if they weren't penalized and thus having a different justification of the events) and Edmonton fans loved Kassian's reaction. Is the league wanting to do something that fanbases seem to enjoy? If they take Tkachuk out of the equation then people will start saying the league is soft or what not I'm sure.
-
The thing is Tkachuk has done much dirtier things than this. It was maybe a charge, but it wasn't a targeted headshot. We have seen worse plays. I get it that it's Tkachuk so everything seems fair game to him, but it doesn't take away that what Kassian did was also a dangerous act and is being applauded for it. I like to see Tkachuk get his dues and the league needs to do a better job, but at the same time, I'm not going to applaud a dangerous act and complain about dangerous acts.

Well he did protect himself by turtling. He did know what was coming and prevented himself getting a face full of fist and a concussion. He knew if he didn't fight back, there's nothing they could call on him, not even roughing. I think it's an ass move by Tkachuk, but Kassian should have let up when he wasn't willing. Kassian was lucky also in that he didn't get a 5 min major. Poor officiating overall, but that doesn't take away the dangerous actions from both sides.
-
I think this is kind of my point. If hits are thrown and no penalties were called, it's hard nosed hockey. People in the building are often cheering loud for these hits rather than cringing. It's the plays where they get suspended and lose them as players on the team that then become controversial. Cooke was a plug, but if he was putting up 70 points as well, there would be more people defending that he simply is doing what it takes to win and quote that "if you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough" or something to that effect. Whatever the case, you would wish injury on Cooke or Torres from an opponent beating them to pulp, but people seem to condone Kassian's actions.

I am not talking down to people. I just think it's contradictory to crucify Tkachuk for being a dangerous player while condoning another dangerous act. I'm not defending Tkachuk at all here. I just don't think two wrongs make a right. I get why people enjoy seeing someone like Tkachuk get what he "deserves", but that doesn't take away the fact that Kassian was attempting to injure with whatever justification is involved. I guess another way to phrase it is to not stoop to their level. I'd accept a punch and then a challenge to fight and let him be unwilling and cower. It shows that you aren't going to put up with it and you're the bigger person here while he remains the rat he is. Instead he goes overboard, costs the team the game (didn't fire up the team as some claim this action would and maybe even incites the opposition). I get that Tkachuk and Marchand types are rats, but I wouldn't wish injury on them, just embarrassment (like Marchand skating over the puck in the shootout, or Matheson cowering all night).
-
I'm saying that the NHL certainly has its flaws. But the actions need to be looked at in isolation. Whatever justification is made, the bottom line is people are crucifying Tkachuk for being a dangerous player, but Kassian's actions are also dangerous and being praised. The NHL needs to get their act together, but that doesn't take away Kassian's actions being dangerous and foolish as well. I'm not defending the NHL or Tkachuk. I just think it's contradictory to be praising Kassian for the similar reasons as why Tkachuk is being run down for. A punch I could understand, but to be swinging away like a mad man on a cowering player doesn't prove anything. Get a lick in and tell him to get up and take it like a man. You then do what it takes to get him to fight like target Gaudreau with a solid clean hit when he's on the ice and force him to answer the bell if challenging him doesn't do anything.

The NHL is a whole different issue. The point I'm trying to make is that people are complaining about how dangerous Tkachuk is, yet support Kassian's dangerous intent to injure actions as well. I'm certain had a Canuck thrown the same hits as Tkachuk did, that player would be getting praised. Probably embarrassed for the turtling, but if it helped the team win the game, then it'll be viewed as simply a player doing what it takes to win. I made a comment earlier this year about Kassian being his own nuclear deterrent and it was a considerably liked comment and this demonstrated it and now Kassian is being praised for it. I just think it's contradictory.
-
Two wrongs don't make a right. Seems to be a fine line for what is defined as a charge, but like I said, if he were a Canuck, I bet many would be arguing against why it's not a charge. Kass should've challenged and stopped when he didn't want to go. Even after a punch or two would've been "okay" but he kept going looking to injure. My bad on him continuing after as well. Either way he got a few licks on him knowingly that he will get set off at some point. I agree that Tkachuk is a dirty player, but can't call him dangerous and then condone Kassian's dangerous actions as well. Deserving or not, a dangerous play is a dangerous play.
-
I think it's just as funny that if Tkachuk were a Canuck, he would be praised for his physicality and probably be celebrated for those hits. Just like how we supported Burrows and Kesler and their antics. People are praising Kassian's actions and yet they were dangerous with intent to injure as well. It just seems contradictory for many to be calling out Tkachuk here (he's certainly done much worse), but at the same time praise and condone further idiocy. I get guys like Tkachuk (and Marchand, etc) are scums of the league, but then you dish out a big clean hit on him in a similar fashion (since it was deemed clean for him) or you challenge him to a fight and let him turtle and embarrass himself. Challenge him to fights all night like we did with Matheson and let him run. Throwing punches when they're down is just as cowardly of an action as turtling itself. This is why Tkachuk actually continued to target him in that game even after this because he knew he had a short fuse and would self destruct himself. This is what Tkachuk does that makes his antics effective to intentionally draw that reaction.

Funny how the same people calling Tkachuk a dangerous player are the same ones condoning a player for beating down on a unwilling combatant. Whether Tkachuk "deserves" it or not, Kassian's actions are just as dangerous and his intent is clearly to injure as well. Tkachuk needs to (but won't) clear up his act and Kassian needs to play smarter and not be repetitively caught in the same position and then blow a fuse costing the team a game. -

Not so fast, perhaps their actual defensive play will get better and salvage their year. But another 1st round exit when he returns. -
Steve Kariya played in the trap era. Perhaps he would've flourished more in the league today where many more smaller players are finding success. If a "listed" 5'8 Kariya is the same size as 5'11 Madden, then Madden is the same size as a 6'2 player? Plus one is a winger and the other is a center. Why not compare Madden to Gaudreau instead who is a smaller player (similar to Kariya if they are considered comparable) putting up similar numbers as 19 year olds and also playing in Hockey East? Doesn't fit the narrative?

There's also the possibility that they want to hang on to him longer to see if they can hash out a deal where he stays. It doesn't have to be holding him back unless he's surely going to the NHL. It's like why don't we just release our UFAs as soon as the season ends? We don't so we can negotiate or even try to trade the rights or whatever. Surely no UFA is felt like they are being held back by the team.

Demko and Lockwood are other college products.

What are the naysayers going to have left to say? Rafferty is better?

You might want to talk to JD Burke and the crew that believe we are giving up a top 3 winning lottery pick next season after we miss the playoffs this year and next. -

And yet some suggest there is no improvement or growth from last season. Clueless. -

He did have 4 points in 6 games in his first crack in the playoffs. I'm sure he's raring to get another chance. -

If by this team as in the 2019-2020 team, then yes. If not, then he has a long way to go to get there statistically to give him that title. He's really been this good for about 1 full season when you include him finding another gear around the final 3rd of last season. -

I certainly remember that we won the president's trophy that year. I want to win the Cup too but there isn't one way to get there. As noted above, there seemed to be different rules for each team. Retaliation is almost always called. Perhaps the Sedins should've been aggressors, but that was never their game and not what got them to where they are in their hall of fame careers. -

Let's not forget there seemed to be different rules for both teams that series (for the conspiracy theorist). Rome was suspended from the series and Boychuk got nothing for breaking Raymond's back for an example. The Sedin bobblehead should've been a penalty on Marchand, not for the action, but the repetitive action. I'm positive that had Sedin punched back, he's off. Had we won, then we would've had our list of "dirty" players eg Kesler that would be on this list. Every team has those. Doesn't prove anything. Those players didn't win because of their push back, but because they are actually decent players in favourable markets to boot.
