  1. Maybe it's charging, but had a Canuck thrown that hit, no one would be complaining about it. Hence why many here actually want Tkachuk. I don't want dangerous players like Tkachuk, but I also don't care for undisciplined players like Kassian. Throwing haymakers on an unwilling player is just as dangerous of a play with real intent to injure. The team may not be upset about it then, but if they miss the playoffs in a tight race, then I'm sure they won't be too happy unless they enjoy early golfing.
  2. The disciplined play led us to top of the league in the regular season and a Cup finals appearance. We were one game away from winning. Hamhuis throwing his hip check taking him out of the series was a major blow. We had our Tkachuk in Kesler at the time amongst other gritty players like Bieksa, Burrows, Lapierre, etc. You're only remembering the Sedins. If they retaliated, they would end up hurting their team the way Kassian did and cost them the game as well which is kind of the whole point of this conversation. So maybe you'll praise the Sedins for standing up for themselves, but we would lose the Cup anyway?
  3. Should've been a 5 minute major on Kass. This is allowing Tkachuk to be effective. This is why I said earlier that Kassian's nuclear deterrent is himself.
  4. It's no different than say you were a fan of any other team, but when they play the Canucks, then the Canucks are your primary team. It's not really a surprise considering his name is "SabreFan1". That doesn't mean he isn't a Canuck fan as well. He is a regular contributor here (not just in hockey talk) and provides a different viewpoint. Don't agree on everything, but then there wouldn't be a point of a message board. He's hardly a "troll" and I've seen some "Canuck fans" that troll their own team much worse. I didn't read the GDT, but I already know how some are on here and I don't blame him for not feeling welcome (although there are a large portion of us that wishes he wouldn't leave). Be passionate about your team and dish it back without any name calling and rude remarks (which apparently is also against forum rules). There are many other posters I would rather escort out before @SabreFan1 We should be welcoming of all fans from other teams as long as they are respectful. If they like to dish it out a little on game days, then it's all in fun until it gets taken overboard.
  5. I was always a sucker for Brandon Reid (a 7th round pick). I think he was in the wrong era. His speed and skill would be dynamic in today's NHL. Unfortunately he was around during the suffocating trap era.
  6. Funny because this seems to be the direction some fans wanted us to go in. Constant management change and tanking for top end picks.
  7. And that is what team tank wanted us to continue doing. It seems there are several examples of teams getting a bunch of top 10 picks that don't really make the team better.
  8. Let's remember that Marky took a while to get to where he is now. He wasn't at this level until about the 2nd half of last season. Benning helped insulate Marky by signing Ryan Miller who Marky also learned from. Without this, Marky's confidence could've been shot by now. Another underrated (in the sense that it isn't talked about much positively) signing by Benning. With that said, I would say most teams generally survive on solid goaltending for success. Every team will have bad games and bad gaffes and need their last line of defense to bail them out. The Canucks need improvements in their lineup still, but I wouldn't undermine the rest of the team simply because our goalies have been good as well.
  9. Part of me wants Tryamkin to come here as soon as possible, the other part wants Tryamkin to do well and maybe even hopefully win it all. Perhaps it would be more closure for him to leave the KHL for another challenge. The earlier he joins us allows us to assess him longer, but if he joins us later, perhaps we don't even need to protect him for the expansion which allows us to protect further assets. Also gives him the summer to adjust his family here before getting back to the grind.
  10. Our PP is 4th in the league, whatever we are doing "wrong" is working. Our PK used to be very good, but it has slipped and could use some improvement. Sutter helped in this regard being a strong faceoff man. We have two designated "checking" lines. We don't have the system where we have one line focusing on the opposition top line. In today's game, many teams have a couple strong attacks. This is why Green wants responsible play from all 4 lines so anyone can be ready for anyone. Once again, tough when you have some young guys learning the ropes still. IMO the defensive side of the game is harder to fine tune than the spotlighted offense (this is where Podkolzin is going to shine through because he's committed to the defensive side of the game already). Green gets criticized for blending the lines and not allowing chemistry. Now I'm hearing how coaching should be shaking things up. Our PP units are 4th in the league as mentioned, so maybe they're simply letting them get through any funks as they seem to be effective enough. You have your views, they just seem to be very negative. I want to see improvements, but I have faith it'll happen. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to adjust as they try different things first. I'm trusting the process as I've seen growth from the team over the years and I still feel they are headed in the right direction and they are currently where I had projected the to be and they are still well within the fight for a playoff spot over halfway through the year.
  11. Those stats do exist, but those are more advanced stats which I'm not as knowledgeable about. I think the higher the corsi% the more possession and for that we are bottom half. But I'm not sure if I'm interpreting that data correctly. But looking up more stats, we have actually loss more games where we have outshot our opponents (loss 11 won 10) and we have won more games where we have been outshot (won 12 loss 6). So we haven't actually lost many games and be outshot at the same time. It just seems when we do lose in that way, we lose in spectacular fashion.
  12. So does being outshot mean being out played? And if so, why aren't those weaker teams not getting results? Now Florida had a ton of grade A quality chances that we need to eliminate, but shot counts don't always reflect being out played. We have out shot teams plenty of times this season as well.
  13. Hughes' mistake last game was a rookie mistake. He's incredible which is why Green trusts him for top 4 minutes, but he will still have occasional rookie mistakes. A team with a core of young players will have inconsistencies.
  14. They've had a couple of games where the secondary scoring has helped. We will see if it can be sustained. At the end of the day, the gameplan is simple, shutdown the two guys and it's a likely win. They are both still the league leaders in points which helps.
  15. Don't know how many games, but we are averaging 31 shots per game while averaging 33 shots against per game. We are bottom 5 in shots against per game, so we do need to work on that, but we are far from a perfect team so of course we need to work on things still. Montreal leads with most shots per game. Are they outplaying everyone? Their record doesn't seem to indicate that.
  16. And they are taking on some of the hardest minutes. We are still relying on Hughes to play top 4 minutes. He's not getting sheltered by any means other than not playing on the PK.
  17. Or we make the playoffs this year and not stress about that 1st. With that said, Eriksson isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I'm not banking on that. I think Baertschi will be bought out in the offseason if a trade hasn't been made earlier (retaining half his cap in a trade doesn't really make that much of a difference to us than buying him out in the off season, so I think that's why we don't want to go that route). I'm hoping for Tryamkin as well and would like to see how Hoglander does in camp before locking him onto the team. Have to see OJ's progression this year, but I don't think he would be a sure thing at the start of next season, but certainly should have seen some NHL time by next season. A healthy Ferland is indeed a big piece to the puzzle, but I'm not certain we are going to get a full value Ferland back, so it was a good thing that we signed him for cheaper than expected (or what he was looking for on the market based on rumours around this time last year). Just having a big body in Ferland back would be a good 3rd line option even if he cannot play with the aggressiveness as he once could, he actually has some decent offensive ability and can skate well.
  18. And yet Trotz's defensive systems have made their goalies Vezina candidates. If there was a good defensive system, then it makes the goalies look good. If the goalies are still looking like the worst goalies in the league, then maybe it's not just on the goalies. If Tippett didn't have McDavid and Draisaitl carrying that team, his system would be doing nothing for them.
  19. I don't see that at all. I've seen plenty of times when Miller/EP/Bo try to carry the puck only to get stopped at the blueline (they've also been successful at times). Dump and chase is done by every line/player in the league, it happens, it's the safe play. The creative players are allowed to have the creative freedom and hopefully they don't make the mistake or execute poorly. Case in point, Hughes' pass up the middle where he thought he could get it through. Green isn't telling him to do that. Hughes is given the freedom to do it, but it backfired in a big way cause it didn't work. Miller likes to try the chip around the player play and at times it works and is effective and I remember a time it got picked off from an EN goal against. The coaches can draw up any play, but at the end of the day, the players have to execute it for it to work. Or if they don't see the play developing (the defense has it covered), then it's on the players to adjust to in real time. The coaches can't call out to the players to alter the entry at that point. Sometimes when the team lacks the confidence, the puck doesn't go the way they want.
  20. And that's why you're going to react the way you are because you're ignoring the bigger picture. A season has ups and downs and right now our team is indeed inconsistent (IMO due to youth, but I know you disagree). We have won games we didn't deserve and have lost games that we have deserved. These things even out generally over time. The standings are a reflection of the overall picture.
  21. We are bottom 10 in average age. Our core is that young group. Jake and Bo I would include in that group. Bo is a 24 year old captain, and Jake is still showing the inconsistencies of a young player, but is getting better. Those vets are the players that we have brought into insulate our youth, but our youth is who we are playing a ton of minutes to drive our team. Even Miller at 26 is considered the vet of our top line.
  22. Good thing if we don't make the playoffs this year, we have another year to tweak and have a crack at it before giving up our 1st.
  23. They're doing their way and we are doing it ours. Both teams are on the same bubble right now. Edmonton isn't outdoing us. We have a more well rounded team and they can't ride their stars forever. We do need to tighten things up defensively, but it's not like our coaches are telling the team to forget defense. Edmonton has a negative goal differential despite having two of the biggest offensive stars in the game. I guess without Tippett, they'd be in the bottom of the league once again. So good on Tippett for getting them right to where we are?
  24. I didn't say the dump and chase was the best system for us. You were suggesting we weren't playing disciplined hockey while the gripe before was too disciplined hockey and not enough freedom for the players. There's contradiction from what is wanted from the coaching staff, but the only thing agreed upon is that it's all on the coaches and the players rarely take blame unless their name is Eriksson. The team tried possession entries and couldn't connect passes or bobbled the puck which led to turnovers. Dump and chase is the safe play when you can't get going with the puck. There's no single system that should be deployed and it's naive to those that thinking the coaching staff only has one system in play.
  25. We don't know how those games in hand will help us or not, but we have them and thus control our destiny which is still a long ways away from being known. We are in the playoff hunt to this day, not sure why we are pretending that we aren't a playoff team already when we are still on the bubble.
