  1. I'm not ignoring that Marky has stolen games. All teams have their goalies steal games. The better goalies steal more games than not. I'm not saying our team is firing on all cylinders, but we have good games and bad ones. Inconsistency isn't a surprise from a young team.
  2. But yet they are not much further ahead than we are despite rebuilding for ages. They may be a bit better defensively but they rely on their two big guns and if they are neutralized, it's over for them. Both Edmonton and Florida are top 10 in the league for goals against. We are 18th. Is Marky better than 2 time Vezina winner Bobrovsky too?
  3. We play a supposed system (dump and chase) and people complain about it. The players play with more freedom and it's still the coaches' fault. At what point are the players held accountable for not executing? We have a team that could crack the playoffs, but we don't have a top contending team. Playoffs is the goal, it's not a lock. Right now, we are still well within the fight for a playoff spot, so what's the panic about?
  4. And yet we have the games in hand to tie 1st in the Pacific still. Tough life we are living.
  5. So then you're reacting based on the last two games only? Should coaches have been fired in the games that we were blowing them out earlier this season?
  6. Trotz and Gallant are a couple of the best coaches in the game. Good on them being able to produce good teams. They weren't available for us to hire. Quennville and Florida are in the same standings position as us in the East. Tippett and Edmonton are barely above us and we are in position to overtake them. I wouldn't call these fine examples of what's better out there than us. What has Babcock and DeBoer done as vet coaches? Become unemployed?
  7. I have no doubt that we wanted to try to make the playoffs this year. If we don't but give it a good effort, that's where I believe the expectations of the team would be. No one thought we would be top contenders and be at the top of the standings at this point. We are right we should be, in a bubble spot fighting for a playoff spot. We have spent to the cap because we have surrounded our youth with vets to help them grow. Detroit also has spent to the cap, what are they doing? We put together a roster that we would like to make that push, but it was not a foregone conclusion just like our season results which still has plenty of games left and we are within striking distance of 1st in the Pacific with the games in hand to accomplish that. I haven't set a low bar, I have set an expectation from the offseason of where I think we should/would be and have stuck with it. The team isn't going to panic and make rash decisions. No one likes to lose, but you also can't win them all. But hey, good on you for expecting perfection, you're the one in the miserable state.
  8. Another possibility is Tryamkin returns, trade Stecher for pick/prospect. Tryamkin plays "bottom pairing" and is groomed to take over Tanev next year. All the while between trade deadline and Tryamkin's return and any injury relief, Rafferty gets some looks. Of course this means we let Tanev walk as a UFA, but I think in the grand scheme of things, it's fine if we are making a playoff push. Fantenberg and Benn could fill that role of bigger veteran D that can play on the right side if needed.
  9. Perhaps playing a Eastern conference team, not wanting to risk injury and knowing there's still a long battle up ahead for a playoff drive allows the team to remain focused on the task at hand (the bigger picture) rather than worrying about making a statement against a team that we don't face again unless we meet in the Finals. I'd like to see some more physicality when things aren't going their way, but I also am not frustrated by the lack of it. I rather the team save their energy when the games become more meaningful and accept the losses for what they are and use them as learning experiences. I can see things heating up during the playoff drive and hopefully having those guys that have that grit healthy enough to play that game will help put us over the top. There has certainly been less teams taking liberties on our young guys this year, so there is some deterrence with having those players too.
  10. If we have a team capable of making the playoffs, why not? We should waste 3 years (good ELC years) when we don't have to? Our ELCs playing big roles helps mitigate the damage caused by wasted cap space. Baertschi wasn't good enough and the league seems to agree letting go through waivers twice. We are not rushing Podkolzin, two years of development time is nothing, especially if he can jump into the NHL right away (drafted college players are just as far away from coming here unless they sign early). We are a rebuilding team, so thank goodness our youth is stepping up into big roles. At some point, we need to assess these young players at the next stage and these young players need the experience. Bo would be 27 years old if we waited until LE's contract expired before actually making an attempt then. Perhaps he wouldn't want to wait that long for another chance at the playoffs.
  11. It being "local" doesn't make it more credible IMO. That is a feasible idea though, but I still don't see how moving a 1st for a 26 year old signed to a good contract and still having an influx of youth to the team is considered as rushing things. We wouldn't have known Miller would be available the following year, so unless the plan was always to move a 1st this offseason for whatever was available, then I still don't see this move as being one to suggest we are "all in" now as opposed to continuing to build our team through youth. Miller is going to be here at least 4 more years (unless he's traded). The trade just seems to be more of an opportunity seen and taken in the moment.
  12. Inconsistencies come from a young team. Look at someone like Jake as a single example. Last year he would have absolutely brilliant games and he would have duds while this year has been better, but still some duds. The team is going through these motions. We might not make it out of the 1st round of the playoffs this year, but it would be good experience regardless and a good assessment of the players for the management. Even if we don't make the playoffs, but give it a valiant push to the end of the year, I'd call it a progression and still good experience for the following year on the type of hockey to play simply for a playoff push. We could play boring hockey and that might result in more wins. Instead we are trying to play more uptempo which is more exciting, but does come with it's negatives. The expectations from the vocal crowd seems to be all on the coaches and the players rarely get shat on except the usual suspects like Eriksson, Sutter (who isn't even playing), etc.
  13. Which is what I think that poster is suggesting that we let Demko fester longer and he would become an instant starter at 26 or something. I think this is more outlier than the norm though.
  14. Many reasons it could be, but you brought up what was said on TSN, and something didn't seem right about it logically (which coming from TSN doesn't surprise me in the least).
  15. Demko is still developing. Just as the back up at the NHL level after having a decent showing in the AHL. Not many step into the NHL starting role coming out of the AHL unless you think the Binnington model is the norm, but look at the team in front of him as well. We are still very much in the playoff race and even 1st in our division at this point.
  16. Linden left in the summer of 2018. We made the Miller trade in the summer of 2019. Seems to be some time delay here that doesn't corroborate that idea. Benning and Aquilini have been preaching patience for this rebuild too. Perhaps it was the other way around that Linden wanted to continue to give the Sedins a fighting chance for another Cup run? This seemed to be the directive early on when Benning was hired which then has changed at some point and Linden soon left.
  17. All in to make the playoffs this year or next maybe, we're only giving up one 1st that Benning has even said he hopes to regain back. Doesn't mean we need to panic about it this year, but if we make it, then we are ahead of schedule. I expected us to be in the hunt for a wild card spot this year and surely a playoff spot next year. Seems to be going according to plan with the conditions.
  18. Seems like an odd extension. Were they worried about losing him or finding a suitable replacement? Did he want that one year security regardless of how he performed and maybe finding himself a better deal?
  19. We are not contenders this year. Stop treating this team like we are one. No one even thought we were locks for the playoffs this year. With that said, we have games in hand and if we win them, we are tied for 1st in the Pacific. We have bounced around the wild card spot for a while now, so no point talking about whether we are in a playoff position now or not. We are still in the fight. It's not about accepting losing, it's about knowing the expectations of the team and we are right where we are suppose to be IMO which is continued growth of the team. We are a long ways away from knowing if we are a playoff team this year or not.
  20. We had Gudbranson, but he was ran out of town. Lucic was unwanted by most here, even at the expense of tough guy Loui. People want truculence with skill to boot. Rare combination and it's going to cost you. I was hoping we could get Zack Smith in a cap dump deal in the offseason, but that has passed. I wonder what the price would be to get someone like Kyle Clifford from LA. With that said, Petey's line is what it is. Miller has to be the tough guy on that line. Gone are the days of plugging a Semenko with Gretzky. Hopefully if/when Tryamkin comes back, it adds some toughness with size from the defense. He's no goon, but he would be an intimidating presence.
  21. Even that trade has set a precedent that we may not be a playoff team this year. The conditions gave us the leeway should we not make it this year. They could've just made it a top 3 protected pick or something if they were "all in" this year. The inconsistency is due to youth. Just see Virtanen's progression as a single example. It is hard to read where we are amongst the bubble teams, but that's where we are, which is an improvement from where we were only a couple of seasons ago. Marky and Demko have been great this year, but they too are proving themselves (Marky for his contract and Demko for more starts). A lot of teams rely on their goaltending to bail them out or be solid to have a successful team. This isn't new.
  22. It puts the team behind and changes the outset of the game. The team was already down from the last game and a start like that doesn't help. It got the team to take more chances which led to odd man rushes because the players were struggling stringing passes and had troubles carrying the puck. Can blame the coaching and systems, but the players are just as at fault for poorly executing. Confidence is big for a young team.
  23. The expectation prior to the season wasn't playoffs at all by seemingly everyone. People were still calling us to tank even up to our 7 game streak. We are honestly right where I personally believe we should be. Of course we want to win games and want to not look bad while losing, but we are not a top contender, so I don't see why the team is being crucified similarly as if we are one.
  24. And we may have bounced back, but an early gaffe by Hughes put us behind early. Funny how I see no complaints about him (not that I'm calling for it). He should have played the puck around the boards which was the safe play, but went up the middle, rookie mistake. Learn from it and move on. This is just part of the learning curve of a young group.
