  1. Should be more worried about him handing out concussions. Feisty bugger. Guys like Gallagher, Gaudreau, etc have copied well into the NHL. All it takes is one dummy to give you a bad shot, but that could happen to anyone regardless of size.
  2. And to think that those players haven't really fared better after being traded. And some people think Benning is bad....
  3. My calculations include Ferland and Sutter not on LTIR and if they are, that's simply more relief. I also have not included Baertschi in the roster. I have also added the potential bonus carryover from this year. I haven't calculated the potential carry over into 2021-2022, but that's for another year to worry about as we would need to assess next year and see what may happen. IMO, next season is manageable without any major asset cost. If the following season requires us to move out an asset, we have another year to assess what we need and what may be moveable especially after another draft. You are assuming we sign Tanev, we may not and mostly likely won't because of the cap and it doesn't mean we replace him with a 5 million dollar player.
  4. @Provost Just curious if I am missing something. I don't see an urgent need to move any assets to gain cap space for next season. It would give us more breathing room, but I think it's manageable without any major cost.
  5. Would be more impressive if it was against an actual NHL dman and goaltender, but certainly a nice move.
  6. You would be correct. Well I'm glad Benning made the pick instead of Gillis'
  7. With Nikita's size, he could probably wear #888 and it'll look normal.
  8. Maybe they could get some help and I'm sure if there was a deal to be made, it would've been done already. I just don't think it's accurate to suggest that they don't care about the team and aren't doing anything about it. Jasek was being tried at center as early as preseason this year (preparing for potential center depth loss). It was always something they seemed to be working on with him. Benning used up a contract spot with Graovac (intended to be call up depth) and he had a good preseason so he earned a look when we were down Sutter and Beagle, unfortunately he got hurt (perhaps he's getting closer to returning, so they're simply waiting it out). Johnson has Camper, Hamilton, and Malone signed. There was also the possibility that Gaudette may have been in Utica for a portion of the year prior to preseason. Perhaps they target NCAA free agent centers this year.
  9. Is it possible that Johnson has inquired and Cassels' side said no thanks? There are many other players that we could sign for the short term, but as I mentioned earlier, perhaps the team is just trying to weather the storm and allowing the wingers to see if they can develop an aspect to their game that could give them a leg up on the competition. Also perhaps a player or two aren't far off from returning. Whatever the case, this is Johnson's decision if AHL contracts are in question and not a Benning directive and not him caring about the farm team as some have suggested.
  10. That's a contract. Two way deal is still an NHL contract. They have to sign strictly an AHL contract. Lowers the quality of players available. So not that simple.
  11. There have been indicators like his agent saying it wouldn't take long to get a deal done and how he keeps tabs with the Canucks. Nothing is certain, but Benning seems to be pushing for it, so we are certainly interested on our end. As for him being good, he's playing top minutes now, so his conditioning is likely a non factor from before. He's adjusted his game to play a more defensive minded game which conveniently would take over for Tanev's role. He's big, fast and durable thus far. No reason to think he couldn't handle a top 4 spot here. Tanev plays the least of the top 4 minutes available and most is on the PK. I think Tryamkin actually might add more value 5v5. The worst case IMO is he's like Zadorov, who currently plays just shy of 19 mins a night.
  12. I have calculated 66.5 million committed to next year, which includes Ferland and Sutter on the roster, Baertschi buried, Spooner buyout, Luongo recapture and 3 million in potential bonus overages. That's 10 forwards, 4 dmen and 1 goalie. Let's be conservative with the cap increase and say it goes up to 83.5 (+2 million). So we have 17 million in cap space. Sign Marky for 6, Virtanen 3.5, Gaudette 1.75 (bridge), Motte 1.5, Tryamkin 2.5, call up Rafferty 700k, sign Fantenberg level player for 850k = 16.8 million and a full roster. If Sutter or Ferland (or anyone else) go on LTIR to start the year, then that frees up more space. If we make any trades of the unwanted assets (we could buyout Sven and that would save us I believe 800k or so for next year if we need a bit more wiggle room). The cap may go up even more which has us laughing, or it doesn't go up as much and that's where the buyout comes in for Sven if we can't trade him. We could bury a contract like LE for another million in savings if there is a stand out prospect like Hoglander or Lind that earn a spot. Very similar roster to this year and while it can be deemed as Tanev and Stecher to Tryamkin and Rafferty as a "downgrade", have to take into account that the young guys are getting another year more of experience and may become better players as well. Tryamkin is a wildcard in all of this for sure, so it's a wait and see if he returns and how he fares. Then make adjustments accordingly.
  13. Turnover doesn't mean downgrade. Even with Tanev and Stecher, we did go through a rough patch, so it's not like these are players that make or break our team necessarily. Our biggest loss would be Tanev, but Tryamkin could come in and potentially take over (plays a similar role in the KHL) at the price of a Stecher. Rafferty or a cheap depth signing would replace Stecher. He's all heart, but replaceable. Leivo is replaceable (see MacEwen) for cheaper too. Cap will go up and I'm certain Benning is looking to free up cap without giving up big pieces.
  14. There's not much Montreal can do without a major shakeup or selling assets to have a stop gap solution. I'm not too certain that Baertschi is that much more useful (Baertschi doesn't really play any minutes different than Kovy would and he producing at his "worst rate" which would be equivalent to Baertschi's best to date), but certainly more risk involved.
  15. No complaints, but going to complain anyway.
  16. AHL contracts don't affect our NHL contract limits as far as I know. Benning likely has given freedom to Johnson to make moves to help their team. Benning can only do so much to help with the situation. I brought the contract limits issue which is why there's only so much Benning can do in this case, so it's not like he doesn't want to help Utica. Benning isn't going to go out and find AHL contracts as that is Johnson's job. But like I also mentioned earlier, it could be them simply riding out the storm and using this as a learning experience for the team to see how the wingers could potentially add one more thing to their arsenal which helps with unexpected development. You cannot plan for everything and some things are simply out of our control. Things take time and that goalie situation was unfortunate. If you remember, we had acquired a goalie, but that goalie was swiped up when we tried to send him down. We couldn't acquire another goalie in that short and our goalies got hurt. It was just an unfortunate sequence of events, something that couldn't have been planned for. We had several centers (Gaudette made the NHL, others got hurt), certainly too many wingers, but that's just the way it is. Hopefully something can be done, but it's not as simple as "go do it".
  17. Which is probably why they went with a cheap fix rather than spending more assets to fix the roster or adding more risk by adding a player that might not work out and be stuck with them for another year as well.
  18. Do you think Benning is telling Johnson to not sign any AHL contracts?
  19. You do know that the Utica GM can sign players to AHL contracts to resolve this situation too right? Perhaps they're just trying to ride out the storm rather than make rash decisions. The Canucks are limited in contract space that they probably want to save should there be quality college or CHL UFAs. AHL contract level players aren't that great either and who knows who's out there. This is a good challenge for the wingers to improve their faceoffs and try to add a different dynamic to their skill set to have them stand out. At some point the injured players will come back and perhaps management knows some guys are close, so no point signing someone. Maybe Sutter gets a conditioning stint.
  20. Perhaps Gaunce didn't want to sign back here and went to look for an opportunity elsewhere.
  21. Kinkaid's contract is half the amount of Baer's and a year less term and they will be giving up a late pick to boot? Teams could've had Sven for free, I think teams want us to retain or want us to give up assets, both of which we don't seem interested in doing.
  22. Well they have to be concerned about next season because he would affect their cap. This is also the reason why we want to get rid of him. Kovy has no risk for next season should he not pan out and he costs next to nothing. This season and last, he's been on pace for about 43 points, which has been Baertschi's previous best points per game average anyway, so there's the same benefit offensively. Baertschi is better defensively, but if they're looking for offense then the past his prime Kovy fits the same bill as the concussion risked Sven that has an extra year on his contract. Weise is a million cheaper and a year less of contract, we could take him back, but we would still need to add. It's like suggesting we take on Alzner for Baertschi, would you not expect more back in return because of the extra year and higher cap hit? It would make more sense for Montreal to acquire Gagner for Weise if they're looking for a spark at forward. I agree that Bergevin hasn't done an amazing job, but the team on paper has been decent. They just don't seem to be getting full value out of the lineup and now they're going through injuries.
  23. But teams acquiring him are hoping he can be an NHL player, they aren't looking at burying him as well, which in your case still adds over a million cap hit while not playing for their big club. That's still going to cost assets to mitigate that risk for them.
