  1. It's settled. Arseneau is the best player based on those stats. Fire Boucher and Baertschi into the sun. I bet some people were licking their chops to talk about OJ's -4. Nice to see him bounce back. Still a minus night though, so still more ammo for the +/- warriors.
  2. If only Green was fired already and Petey wasn't so frustrated, he would be at like 60 points by now.
  3. Well I guess we will have to see how he progresses next year. Olli is protected. Possibly Tryamkin. We may gamble leaving Myers unprotected (nice to have this option) if Rafferty grows his game over the next year worthy of a top 4 D spot.
  4. He's played in all 3 leagues this year, majority in the VHL/"AHL". This is feasible because all of the teams are located in close proximity, so going from league to league isn't much travel despite the bouncing around.
  5. I remember reading something similar when we did sign him, so I looked up his contract. https://www.capfriendly.com/players/tyler-myers If this is accurate, then he will have a modified NTC as early as next season, so we won't have to protect him regardless (or we still can if we choose to do so). His contract looks structured to get a signing bonus for the expansion year, so I wonder if that will play a part in "protecting" him as a new franchise may not want to fork out the 5 million bonus money up front. He has a bonus on his final year as well, which could make it more feasible to trading him in his final year should a team want his cap, but not his salary.
  6. I doubt they are trying to ruin his development. He gets tonnes of minutes in their "AHL" as an 18 year old. He has developed a strong work ethic and is completely defensively responsible while showing signs of being a danger offensively as well. There are still parts of his game to work on, but they are likely working on that with him especially in practices in the big club and seeing how they handle things. I predict he will have a bigger role in the final year of his contract there. They are not just developing him for their club, but to be a representative of their national team.
  7. News conveniently announced shortly after Lafreniere scored in the WJC. I wonder if they will have our lotto luck and fall to 4th overall.
  8. Well that's why I said for cheap. It depends on Dahlen if he wants to find another level to his game. If he is willing to return here then that opens up the possibility that he has accepted that he was in error in the past. Not saying it would work out, but I wouldn't be upset if it did happen and I'm willing to give him another shot if he's willing.
  9. I think he would need to readjust from the WD era to the Green era assuming there are differences in approach. There are new players now and simply adjusting to being here. I agree that it shouldn't take as long though because he should have a better idea of what to expect here outside of the rink and hopefully be more prepared this time around, so he can focus on his game. I don't think he will have the conditioning issue like he did last time as well, but I expect a gradual minute progression before he becomes a top 4 (assuming he gets there).
  10. I wouldn't mind at a low cost. He still is putting up great numbers in his league, but I hope to see him amongst better competition and be able to step out of his comfort zone. He needs to be willing to try new things to improve his game. This is what the Canucks did with Jake and even though he has limited minutes, he is going to have a much longer career because he was willing to listen to the coaches and adapt his game. Tough love is not suited for all, but the intention of the coaches are generally to get the best out of the players. Dahlen just needs to trust the process.
  11. There are conflicting reports. Who knows if the words actually came out of the mouth of Dahlen or not, but something was said by his agent (unlikely to be JP Barry himself, but probably one of his cohort working on a "low profile" player and the agent wanted to make a name for himself) to Benning to make him believe he wanted to be traded and JB obliged. It didn't work out for him here and he left the SJ organization. Now hopefully for Dahlen he develops more and returns back to the NHL because I believe he has the skill to be successful. We can go on and on based on speculation, but at the end of the day, one still remains in our organization and one isn't, so there either was a trade request or a communication breakdown. The Palmu situation (amongst others) seems to indicate that we are open to suggestions that help the players feel like they are doing what's best for themselves, so we have a history of working with our players. We will see if Dahlen takes that next step and has made the right career decisions for himself.
  12. For the love of Gaud, someone tell Nils to take it easy then!
  13. I bet Doughty and LA are disappointed that we are bouncing back right in time to face them again. Can't take the game lightly, but we need to continue to prove we are no longer a "team like that".
  14. Myers' NMC is only for this season. It becomes a modified NTC for the rest of the contract, which allows him to have 10 teams he is not allowed to be traded to. We technically don't need to protect him and I wonder if maybe we actually don't, which would allow us to make a big splash signing/trade and protect that player. As mentioned already, Benn's contract will expire at the same time as Edler, so it would be a similar circumstance that allows him the freedom to actually join any team or re-sign instead of possibly being plucked up by Seattle. Is Rafferty eligible? I'm not sure he meets the pro requirement as it would be similar to Hughes in that I don't think last year counted since he didn't get enough games. I can't see us retaining Tanev and Stecher beyond this season due to cap reasons and depending if Fantenberg wants to stay here and if we can afford him, I have my doubts that we need to protect him as well (and likely won't even if it comes to it). Sautner might move on unless he happy with a 7th/8th pressbox cheap dman role (NHL salary though). I think we are pretty comfortably set on defense in terms of the expansion.
  15. From what I've read, I thought Hughes didn't play the games required in his first season and shouldn't need protection. His contract is up as it burned off a year but didn't meet the requirements of being a year of pro. Correct me if I'm wrong here. Tryamkin is also a question mark, but I believe he does need protection if he returns this season. If he returns next season, then we wouldn't. OJ definitely needs protection. I imagine Myers will be protected. Edler is a UFA which he conveniently signed (and people think he's going to retire in two years ). So they could pluck him, but he just doesn't have to sign with them. He pretty much self protected himself because being here is more important than the money and term. I think our defense is pretty safe. Certainly a goalie up for grabs, but it'll depend on what goalies are available (possibly Holtby). I doubt they want to grab too many goalies as the market to trade them will be thin. Depending on who we protect or not, I could feasibly see a Lind or Motte being taken if they aren't protected. Maybe Roussel. Will certainly be interesting to see who leave available, but whatever the case, just let them take whoever and move on. Don't make any side deals.
  16. Cap friendly shows he's still on his ELC next season. His ELC slid for the first couple of years after he signed. Where did you hear that we had to protect him? We have to protect him from expansion though.
  17. OJ is still on his ELC next season, so as far as I can tell, he won't need waivers next season.
  18. The Leafs also have been in the league like 53 years longer than we have and their last Cup was before our existence in the NHL. So technically their drought is longer than ours and how many 2nd place finishes have they had since we joined the NHL?
  19. He demanded a trade, not an opportunity to play elsewhere to develop. Palmu's agent went to find an opportunity for him, while Dahlen's agent tried to force their hand to get him to the NHL faster. Different scenarios IMO.
  20. Vegas also took a bunch of 3rd/4th liners and made a threat out of them. They turned a "3rd" liner in William Karlsson into a 40 goal scorer. Motte has had a history of offensive success playing on the right line. Players like Burrows weren't expected to be as good as they should be. I'm not saying Motte would get there, but at worst he's helped sparked the 4th line and is the top hitter on our team which would be tougher for us to play against right in our division. You're right that though that it could be worse than to lose a 4th liner, so I rather cut our losses here than to make a side deal.
  21. I've been saying since last season that he is creeping towards needing protection in the expansion. 4th liners generally are replaceable, but he seems to be a spark plug, likely on a cheap contract that has potential for more to his game. I'm almost curious to see how he fares on a line with EP and Miller.
  22. I think the biggest factor would be if Tryamkin returns and his showing during his return. If Tryamkin shows he could simply take over Tanev's role, then it could be argued that it's worth trading him, but that only strengthens a potential rival (so of course we look at Eastern teams, but then that limits our options too assuming there is interest at all). If our goal is indeed playoffs this year (at least to make a serious push), then Tanev makes our team that much better for the drive and possible run (even including Tryamkin). IMO I would view it as our playoff push rental that most teams make, but without costing us any assets. Now of course we could also look into trading him if there is enough interest to acquire a 1st and we buy another rental for say a 2nd/3rd and thus "moving up" in the draft, but of course there has to be a player available for this price that doesn't downgrade our team significantly to even consider this option and it all has to play out right (if we move Tanev first, the other team that we are trying to trade with could decide to raise the price). There are many potential scenarios, but if the primary goal is playoffs and to not give up a high (unprotected) 1st, then we should be going "all in" this year. It accomplishes those goals plus gives our young players playoff experience and the coaching/management to be able to assess the players at the next level (even if we are knocked out in the 1st round). I think the pros of keeping Tanev, even if he walks as a UFA, outweigh the pros of trading him (we don't know what his trade market value is other than previous rumours of Toronto wanting to trade a 2nd and a weak prospect/project player).
  23. Based on your reasoning, perhaps we should just avoid the draft altogether because there are no facts that any of those players can become anything at the NHL level since we cannot project anything years down the road and all they have to show for are junior stats that may or may not translate anyway. We are developing OJ to become a top 4 dman (that is taking on tough assignments like top PK) and from a young player comes mistakes and growing pains. He may have had a couple of injury setbacks, but he's back and playing now, so all we can do is support his progression. It's great that Rafferty is playing well, but he also has had 3 more years to develop. To put it into perspective, Rafferty is older than Virtanen who has developed his game immensely in a 3 year time period. Juolevi may be a longer term project than we would have liked, but there is still plenty of time for him to get there.
