Petey got a concussion at the NHL level and a knee injury and he's still pushing strong. Petey just has the mental toughness to battle through the challenges. Green was a former AHL coach, so I doubt he's changed his coaching style because he's in the NHL. Petey is just a better player than Dahlen and willing to put the work in.

Pretty much, but I think they're in a bit worse with the Parise and Suter contracts. But they do also have more youth coming in already. They're doing that transition to players around 23-24 range in hopes of a quicker turnaround, so we will see if they can make it happen, but they might just get to the point where they have no choice but to blow it up. -
But that's the point. Sutter was a step behind because he was playing through a hernia injury until they decided to shut him down. If Sutter is injured again, Gaudette will get more opportunities, if Sutter is healthy, he's currently the better suited player for the role while Gaudette could use the development playing bigger minutes in the AHL. It's not a knock on Gaudette, he just has room to grow still. The post that I responded to was comparing offensive stats (and I'm assuming +/-) as well and Gaudette compared to an injured Sutter, which means Sutter at closer to 100% is currently the better player. Maybe Gaudette had a good offseason and comes in ready to knock someone off the NHL roster, but camp will decide that. Based on last season and hearing that Sutter is ready for camp should put Sutter ahead of Gaudette on paper at least. So not only did Sutter produce offensively at the same rate as Gaudette while being injured, he was also stronger on the faceoff dot and more often against tougher competition unlike Gaudette who played in a more sheltered role and struggled in a key part of being a "3rd line center". I have no idea why Sutter gets such a bad rap. Is he injured a lot, yes, but that doesn't make him a poor player much like Tanev who makes the lineup better when he is in.
-
Last season Sutter played most of his games with a hernia and then decided to shut him down. So I guess Gaudette put up the offensive numbers of a far less than 100% Sutter and I guess that means Gaudette is ready? Sutter played half the games that Gaudette did and still took more faceoffs than AG and being just under 50% (normally above 50%) while Gaudette was a meager 40%. I have faith that Gaudette will become a better player, but he can grow with a season in Utica (hopefully a Kesler like improvement after the lockout season forcing him into a year in the AHL) and we have the depth now to give him some stability to develop.

[Waivers] Michael Stone (Buyout)
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Maybe so, but Calgary likely had acquired him to be a top 4 guy (they had a conked out Wideman and bottom pairing Engellend as their other options after Brodie that season), but they acquired Hamonic who became available unexpectedly and wanting to come to Western Canada which pushed him down the depth chart. He is pretty much a bottom pairing guy that can step into a top 4 role of need be. So if a team can't muster up the cost to acquire the top 4 player, then they might simply shore up their depth instead and take themselves out of the market. -

I get that Stone isn't of the high end quality and while his minutes has seemed to diminish, he was a top 4 dman in Arizona. No team is going to threaten to sign Stone if they don't get Risto at a lower price, but if a team chooses that they don't want to pay the cost and starts looking at other options (eg Shattenkirk, Stone, etc) and they sign them, that's one less team competing to trade for Risto as they've chosen to move on to the next plan. -

Plan B = Shattenkirk, plan C = Stone, etc. More RD's out there means more options for teams if they decide the price is too high otherwise. Supply and demand. Buffalo has 4 respectable RD, something's gotta give. -

Another RD on the market, hopefully this is lowering the price of Risto in a trade. -
[Buyout] Rangers buy out Kevin Shattenkirk
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If you want to win a Cup and got money in the bank, why not? Join a contender for cheap. He's 30 turning 31 next season, so time is of the essence and I think I would in those circumstances. If he were to join Edmonton or something, then yes I would look to get paid market value. -
[Buyout] Rangers buy out Kevin Shattenkirk
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I imagine it's more to do with cap reasons rather than play. I think Shattenkirk is still a legit player, they just couldn't afford him and they signed Trouba who will take over the top RD and Adam Fox will be utilized more most likely and Brendan Smith rounds out their right side. Whoever can sign him could likely get him cheaper than market considering he has his buyout money now. Hopefully Toronto doesn't find a way to fit him in. Edmonton should jump on this, but maybe he doesn't want to sign there. We would need to move out someone like Tanev if we expect to bring him in. -
I had an inkling that was the case, but he was listed as a LD, so thought I had it wrong. Seems like a logjam then with Subban, Vatanen and Severson on the right side then (Vatanen and Severson were their high minute guys last season). Greene, Butcher, Mueller on the left side is less impressive. They lost Lovejoy who was key on the PK for them, so have to wonder who will take on those minutes for them defensively.

With Parise and Suter still signed for an eternity, they really have no choice but to remain competitive because if they tried to go full rebuild now, they will have those guys still under contract only older, so unless they want to have a rebuild that lasts more than 6 years they have to keep pushing on. They have the pieces and they need to add the right pieces moving forward as they have sort of become like the stale core of the Canucks. I think they'll simply have to keep trying for maybe 3-4 more seasons before deciding to blow it all up or not. -
Loui played 7 years in Dallas where he has 357 points in 501 games. He's only played 6 more seasons after that and 3 of those were here in Vancouver. So he's played 3 seasons out of 13 in the East and they weren't his best years either. I don't think NJ has their 2020 2nd (not their 2021 2nd in case you're thinking of moving to that one and no 2020 3rd either). If we are talking trade with NJ though. I think Tanev would be a nice fit there playing alongside Butcher. They have Subban, Severson and Connor Carrick on the right side, so Tanev would shore that up. Of course this move would be to open up the possibility of adding someone like Ristolainen in a subsequent deal. NJ does look like they could use some bottom 6 veteran depth, but I'm not sure if Eriksson is the answer for them (although would be nice if they are interested).

Looks like a professional team playing against a beer league team based on those uniforms.

I don't think we need to play afraid like this. Who plays with Crosby, McDavid, Kane, etc? They may have enforcers on their team, but none are putting players on their line strictly to police. The days of Semenko with Gretzky and Gino with Bure are long gone. Ferland plays with good players because he can skate well and produce decently alongside them and of course the physical aspect is an added bonus. I'm not saying Ferland wouldn't be a good linemate with EP and BB, but I just don't think the reasoning of being a "deterrent" is reason enough to do so and Miller is perfectly capable and is right in the same weight class anyway. Matheson was going to make that play regardless and it's not Ferland would've read that play and knocked him over just before the slam. It was a quick sequence of events and not like Matheson was playing aggressive against Petey all game to lead to that moment. So maybe Ferland responds and gives Matheson a beating (in which case Miller could do the same), but it wouldn't have prevented the injury. Pettersson himself needs to get a bit stronger and learn the gamesmanship to avoid that situation (maybe pop him with an elbow, or simply get into more of a tussle until reinforcements arrive). The purpose of a line with EP and BB is to generate offense, so IMO you'd want a linemate with the highest potential to do so while balancing out that they need physical support. Both Ferland and Miller do provide this but Miller with the higher offensive potential along with other added attributes. We can agree to disagree, but I guess what we can agree on is that it's nice that we can even have this debate because we finally have the options to do so.
-
I think my point is do you really think Matheson would've not done what he did simply because Ferland is on the ice at the time? Matheson was mad because he got dummied several times by EP and I don't think his thought process would've been "wait Ferland is on the ice I better not do this". It may have been "oh this team has no pushback so I can get away with this", but as you've explained, this no longer is an issue for us and he would have this "fear" regardless if Ferland is on their line or not much like how teams may fear of what Reaves could do to them. If it's about fear of getting beat down, it could happen at anytime in the game regardless if it's immediately after or a shift after. He may be a deterrent, but I don't think it's necessary that he's on the ice as well. If he's on the line with EP and BB, it's because he is also the best suited to bring out the best from each other in many aspects of the game (which could very well be Ferland). The fact that Miller is capable and willing to defend his linemates and is the better offensive potential is what would make him dangerous on that line. Plus Miller provides other elements like being able to play center which is more suited with EP who isn't the strongest on the dot just yet and this aspect would be a waste on a line with Horvat who is stellar on faceoffs.
-
But there is. We could choose the better "fit" where on paper Miller looks to be. People were calling for Ferland to exact revenge. He wouldn't have stopped the play from happening, but maybe have someone do something about it after the fact. The problem was supposedly in game, no one saw what happened and it didn't even occur until the next time they faced that they looked for retribution. Ferland on the same line doesn't change that if he also did not see what happened. So it really comes down to who makes that line better in production as a "deterrent" doesn't need to be on the ice with your star player at all times. I understand if the thought process was Ferland may mesh well with said players in that he's played alongside skilled guys in Aho and Gaudreau, but I don't buy the reason for being a deterrent. If we want a guy that is simply willing to stand up for his linemates should they take a bad/dirty hit, then Miller is more than capable of doing this job. People were calling for Reaves as well and like I mentioned, he's a under 10 minute a night player, and he's widely seen as the best deterrent in the NHL currently. He indeed is a good face puncher, but I wouldn't play him with EP and BB for this reason alone.

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
theo5789 replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There, he invested some of his earnings towards our top future player. He's inching back closer to his contract worth! -
I don't think they would've qualified him if they felt he has nothing left to offer. He would have very little value in a trade, so I imagine he's at camp fighting for a spot. He may very well be waived, but I'd like to see him get a look. We don't have a lot of offensive creativity, so while we did beef up our lineup, I think there needs to be a balance of some skill sprinkled in there and I'd argue that Goldy would be probably only after EP in creativity.
-
If no one saw the play unfold as what happened with Matheson, then does it matter who's on the ice? I don't buy the whole deterrent thing in the sense they need to be on the same line. Ryan Reaves is probably one of if not the best deterrents in the NHL and he plays under 10 minutes a game. If I was a pest, I'd try to throw Ferland off his game by going after the star player and goading him into taking a dumb penalty. So IMO it's finding the best player to fit the line in terms of production offensively and defensively (it may very well be Ferland). If it's Miller, he more than a willing combatant that will stand up for his teammates for any immediate retribution and he's the higher ceiling offensive player. Miller may even end up centering the line if EP is having a tough night on the dot too. So on paper he's the better choice.
-
To further my earlier post about Goldy being a wildcard, maybe try Ferland-EP-Goldobin. Goldobin has the skill to go with EP and Ferland can police them. Then that leaves Miller with Horvat and Boeser. Pearson and Baertschi can duke it out for the 3rd line spot, but I feel like there's another trade (or two) that will happen this offseason. Either way, I'm kinda rooting for Goldy to succeed and I hope he finds another level this season. If not, we have the depth to still fill out a decent top 6 this year.
-
I guess what we can take from this is that we have many potential options. I have Miller to start with EP and Boeser to start. Miller will stand up for his teammates and has more offensive potential to click. Having Ferland out there only really adds immediately retribution should something go down. Ferland throwing a big hit might spark scrums and such and allows teams to take liberties on guys like EP and BB as well. But Ferland has played on lines with Aho and Gaudreau, so no reason to think he can't fit alongside them. A wildcard with the added size acquired could be Goldobin. He's probably one of the most skilled guys on the team. He might be interesting to try on a line with Pearson/Miller and Horvat who are defensively responsible and will crash the net while Goldy dishes passes to them or has them forecheck and dig the puck out to Goldy who seems to have an underrated shot.

I haven't read much about people going to boo him if he hits the ice on opening night. You have brought this up many times though. I don't know if you're trying to encourage it, but you seem adamant that it will happen. There may be a few folks trying to boo, but if the crowd is knowledgeable, they will drown out those fools or simply not participate and it'll wear out quickly. I would be shocked/ashamed if there's was a significant enough crowd booing LE if he earned his spot out of camp. Media will ask him about it, just like they've been questioning him for 3 seasons. It's going to be no more of a distraction than the media trying to get EP to throw out another "death stare". The media is mostly terrible and that simply isn't going to be any worse than any other years. Again it's the fools that feed these trolls that keep them going. If it's not LE, they'll simply pester someone else. Benning himself has already stated that the comments made were mild and I'm certain Green has tougher skin to deal with that minor quip. He's under contract and if he isn't dealt, then he's coming to camp and he's going to compete for a spot. If one of the younger, cheaper players indeed knock him out, then he will be waived (as demonstrated already). If he performs better than them, then he's in. We are not desperate to unload his cap and waiving him isn't really saving us more than waiving any other player, so cap reasons alone is not going to dictate where he ends up playing.
