  1. And I've been clear with my posts that it's not about Lucic's value in the trade and rather the sweetener. Any Lucic performance boost is sheer bonus (and I've only speculated reasons why there may be a performance drop off rather than simply thinking he sucks and he's only going to suck even more). You have to keep in mind that we are giving up a rather useless player for his price tag as well (but people here try to promote his value to increase the trade potential). So yes I know what we would be taking on in the extra year, etc, but the difference is I'm comfortable with a 1.5 million retention (barring still a significant add which is the key to the deal) and others are not which is fair. But by being closed minded and lumping me amongst those who have the perception that we will get the Lucic of a decade ago has never been my stance and I'm no longer going to have a discussion with anyone that perceives that as my mindset. Once again, I'm not expecting Lucic to "rebound" with the implication of the word suggesting he will go back to what he once was. It's about as much risk as those suggesting we simply keep LE and hope he bounces back for trade value. Keeping LE and sending him to Utica only nets us just under 5 million is absolute dead cap space with no potential whatsoever of a player and no sweetener. The idea of this for many is in hopes that he will simply retire rather than report and there's the same risk of him not doing so and we are dinged with dead cap for the next 3 seasons on top of the Luongo retention adding to almost 8 million of dead space going into the 3rd year where EP and Quinn need extensions.
  2. Being best in the league is subjective anyway. No matter where we place, we at this point have to be in the top 5 though. And when comparing young cores, we cannot ignore EP, BB and Quinn Hughes. And to some extent Bo.
  3. You're the one that praised Ottawa's rebuild and called it "SMRT" because it follows the Colorado model. Aside from the aforementioned Gaudette, MacEwen and Juolevi who could step in this season. We have players outside of Utica that are doing well or expected to be a top performer in their respective leagues. We could potentially see Tryamkin, Rathbone and even Lockwood by the end of this season. We have Madden, Woo and DiPietro entering the system soon. We have recently drafted a couple of high end wingers in Podkolzin and Hoglander who could compete for spots after a couple of seasons. Demko is already starting to make his mark. Lind and Gadjovich will have a pro season under their belts and hopefully continue to progress. If that's not "incoming depth" then I don't know what it is.
  4. I'm fine with the wait and see approach as I'm not the one calling us a basement team already. We have been trending up if you want to look at recent track record and we were within striking distance of a wild card spot last year until close to the end of the season. We have only bolstered our team while many others in our conference have remained stagnant. There are many factors that can happen during a season of course but even if we just miss out on a playoff spot (or become a "lotto pick team"), that doesn't make us a "basement team". If you want my prediction, I think we will be fighting for a wild card spot this season, but I can't call right now whether we will be above or below that line.
  5. Whether it's here or elsewhere, players try to welcome a change of scenery if wanting a change. I'm suggesting it's a possiblity. When did I say it would be a certainty? I've mentioned that he may be sparked and up his value slightly to potentially be moved on again. But please continue putting words in my mouth.
  6. Agree to disagree then. I just want to add that I would not like to be grouped with those thinking that we are going to get back the Lucic of 2011 (even that Lucic was effective because of the team he was on). This is the 2nd time you have responded to me suggesting that and I have not said anything of that ilk. If this is your thinking in how I feel about Lucic, then you're wrong.
  7. That + is key though. Goldobin's been tried at the NHL level and hasn't really stuck and he's 24 soon. Lind is still young and has potential and potential is generally viewed in higher value than worth, but yes arguable for sure.
  8. But that's why I'm suggesting the retention. I would love the 50%, but I'm trying to be more reasonable that Edmonton also considers making the deal. I don't think they do if they retain that much and take on the full LE hit, but who knows. Even if we send LE down, he's still taking up just under 5 million in cap space and he isn't even playing for the big club. At least with Lucic at 4.5 million, we get slightly more cap relief than sending him down and we maybe get someone that can play. We don't know how he will fit until he's here at camp. If you've watched so many Oiler games, then you have to realize they've had a real messed up structure. And while I agree that Lucic isn't going to keep up with McDavid style game (we are playing with more speed, but not at that level), the Oilers shifted more and more to playing McDavid more and maybe coincidentally that's why Lucic isn't working there because he doesn't fit playing with that level of speed. We want to get faster, but it looks like we want to be tougher too and that's more like the Bruins style which Lucic fit in perfectly (and even LA), so I'm not going to prematurely rule it out, but that's my opinion.
  9. I was saying I wouldn't want to let go of Goldobin not because he has high value, but there's more potential for us because we could use his skill in balance to our new muscle (Ottawa is not in the same situation and have their own offensive prospects that I'm sure they would rather play over Goldobin). He doesn't have a lot of trade value, so I rather see what he can do in camp or waive him and hope he passes for depth and if he gets claimed, then it's not a big loss either. That year 3 salary is what he won't want and what will cost the premium. Plus year 2 if there's a lockout, they have to pay that bonus anyway. Not favourable for them. I think it will cost a younger prospect like a Kole Lind for this deal to go through IMO.
  10. I watch him when he plays against the Canucks and I can't say I ever thought he was too slow for the game itself, but it's a small sample size. I never said he would be what he once was, but rather he would be sparked coming to a new scenery which happens to be his hometown. The buzz may wear off after a year, but perhaps it's enough to up his value to be able to move him again down the road after a couple more years are burned off his contract. Guys like Schenn found new life and got an NHL contract on a top contender and I doubt he would have without playing here. Look at Pearson who looked like maybe his play was dropping off significantly and suddenly he's a lock for most in our top 6. Whatever the case, if the deal happens, I'm of the mindset to see what happens in camp and so forth rather than bash Lucic. For all we know, maybe it's Edmonton's structure that messed him up (I know he wouldn't be the only one). This deal may also never happen and it becomes moot anyway.
  11. Would take more than Goldy IMO. The reason why they did the Anisimov deal is because it really would only cost them 5 million in salary versus 6.5 with Smith over the same term and they gain the cap benefit for themselves, which is why they probably didn't need the sweetener from Chicago. I'm not sure how it works in terms of bonuses and such, but LE is still owed 9 million over the next 3 seasons, so a 2 million cap retention (I assume it becomes a percentage, so 33%), then they still owe LE 6 million rather than just paying 3 million for Boedker. LE has longer term, which seems to be a sticking point for teams and based on what Melnyk has said (whether it's believable or not), he plans to have a spending window starting in 2021 to make a push, which means LE's 3rd year isn't exactly welcoming. We will have to pay big for that 3rd year which is why I don't think Goldy will be enough.
  12. No he's not going to keep up with the McDavids, and not assuming he would play with Petey, but EP is more of a cerebral player and can play more east-west to slow the game down (on top of having that extra gear). Centers like Sutter and Beagle aren't speed demons and while they might have speedier winger in Virtanen and Motte on the forecheck, I don't think Lucic won't be able to "keep up" with the lines. It would seem like his hands (or confidence) is shot much like LE. You can park a Lucic in front of the net on a PP and have guys like EP and BB lasering shots past him, you don't need a ton of speed here. He would take up a spot, but maybe after a couple of years, we can look to retain maybe 50% (after the assumed 1.5 million retention) to get him down to about 2.25 million and there could be a taker. Look at a guy like Reaves who often plays under 10 minutes a night, doesn't have incredible offensive numbers, but is utilized as a major enforcer and gets a 2.25 million contract now. Guys like Chris Stewart are still getting tryouts despite being big and slow and generally lazy and may even have a bad attitude. There's value there and maybe not while he's getting 6 million a season, but at a lower cap hit, there will be more interest especially after we take off a couple more years off the contract (and hopefully somehow boosting his value up a bit). He has a NMC now which limits Edmonton to which teams he could be dealt to, but it is unlikely we would renegotiate that back for him if we did acquire him allowing us the option to move him more freely as well. Plus a change of scenery could spark him for a season at least before regressing back to the norm if he is indeed declining. There are other aspects to consider beyond that he's simply slow and overpaid. I'm not pushing for the idea, but just considering different avenues should this indeed be the best option to move on from LE.
  13. We can only wish that's all it would take, but yes if it is, then I'm fine with it too. Goldobin doesn't have a lot of league value at this point IMO.
  14. This just goes to show that even if you're big and slow, teams are still willing to give them a chance no matter the history. Perhaps Lucic has greater value in the league than LE if this is the case!
  15. Well whatever happens, I'd like to see Goldobin in camp rather than dealing him off. A lot of potential to gain, not a huge loss even if we lose him for nothing (assuming he wasn't good enough to crack the roster anyway).
  16. But what you originally responded to, I suggested if Edmonton retains cap, so we actually save 1.5 in cap over the next 3 years (which is more cap savings than simply sending LE to Utica) and we would get a sweetener to boot. We take on that 4th year, but perhaps we can buy him out at that point or retain cap ourselves at any point to lower his cap even further and maybe there will be a taker for him given that he's become a bottom 6 guy. I take the skating issue with a grain of salt. From the games I've seen him play, I didn't think he was a slug and many people that have watched him regularly have said his skating isn't a problem. Plus as I've stated many times before that people criticized Schenn's skating and he turned out just fine. So while Lucic is overpaid, if he get retained by Edmonton and we retain further, I'm sure there's still value there for him as grinder. Reaves plays minimal minutes, doesn't produce a whole ton of offense, but is a major physical presence and he has about a 2+ million dollar contract.
  17. The team has never has the physical support. Perhaps Goldy plays a little bigger with backup support. If he's one of the most skilled forwards after Petey, then perhaps he compliments the new look we have because we do need skill in the lineup too. Roster space is difficult to find though. Hopefully he passes through waivers if it gets to that point, but I think I'd like to see him in camp before sending him off. If he does get taken, then we got insurance in Perron and somewhat in Boucher for his type of player anyway.
  18. He plays in Da Beauty League over the summer and is dominant in it to boot! There's still months before camp starts (see Horvat signing), no one is holding anyone ransom at this point.
  19. But but we were the only team to offer that 4th year, so that makes the Ferland deal a bad one
  20. I assume you mean Stewart here. Well they had a younger speedier Stewart basically who has raw potential and likely would pass through waivers, so they could have him as depth. Instead of qualifying him on a cheap deal, they gave him up. They could've easily had both guys in this situation. Whatever the case, we benefit from it.
  21. There was an article about the Flyers' GM wanting to give him an opportunity because they likely didn't have space for him there. http://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/former-sabres-prospect-justin-bailey-happy-to-land-with-canucks/
  22. Shouldn't they have just kept Justin Bailey instead?
