  1. I'm not pushing for Lucic, but we aren't dumping LE easily (if Benning make an incredible deal, then even more praise for him then). So just trying to think positively in a situation like this. And as I've always been saying, it's not about Lucic that we get back, it's the sweetener (and it better be substantial to make it worth it). Any benefit to the team from Lucic is a bonus because it's not like LE is providing much more.
  2. I imagine Harpur takes Liljegren's spot and he would add some size there. But still won't be enough to counter what we would be bringing.
  3. What if Edmonton retains like 1.5 million in cap, so it saves us that amount over the 3 years of LE and "pays off" that extra year. We would still have that extra year of 4.5 million, so we would still get a sweetener, but maybe not as high. Would that be more feasible if it's simply a cap hit problem?
  4. I believe all teams this season should have no problem getting to the cap floor and plenty of teams that would still love to unload cap. Not sure how the Marner/Columbus thing relates to this unless you think they should go after LE if they miss out on Marner. Columbus IMO actually has a respectable team as long as they can get decent goaltending. They obviously lose out on Panarin's production, but I imagine the team is going to step up as a whole where they've had some decent players actually underperform of late and with more opportunity, they could bounce back.
  5. If Green and Benning don't think he's a player, then they don't make the trade. If a trade happens, then they must feel there's value there whether it's Lucic himself or what else we can pry from them. By some accounts from people that do watch Edmonton regularly suggest that it's not his speed that is the issue and he can certainly play a role much like LE, but they're simply overpaid right now for what they provide. We can give something up to move out LE for a "better" contract or we can gain something for taking on a "worse" contract. This to me is really the dilemma here. As for Edmonton's play, it doesn't seem like they rolled 4 lines at an uptempo pace. They seem to rely heavily on 3 players and would have a line they didn't really trust all the much and get minimal minutes. I would actually say that when they did roll the lines more evenly 3 years ago, his production was better. So is it because of his play where the production dropped or was it the shift in deployment that they used.
  6. They kind of remind me of the WCE Canucks. I think goaltending is their weak link, but if they get a confident Grubauer in the playoffs, then teams better worry. Hopefully karma doesn't have one of their stars never be the same after a cheap shot.
  7. Camp will prove his worth and where he belongs on the roster. Maybe he comes here with a bit more drive back in his game, who knows. Worst case scenario is that he remains the dud that he is, but LE is no different, so that's why the sweetener has to be decent for us to take that extra year. It's not uncommon that players just need a change of scenery to spark themselves again. Lucic's best years and even as recently as two seasons ago have seen better offensive numbers than Pearson, Ferland, Roussel and Baertschi. Based on some that watch him regularly, they claim his skating is fine (can't say I've watched him regularly, but the games against the Canucks that I've seen, I would agree). So it's really a matter of why his production has started to fall. If Pearson didn't have that decent stretch at the end of last season, he looked like he was fizzling out as well. Leipsic has a decent final stretch as well, so we will see if he can continue his chemistry with Bo. Baertschi has his obvious concussion concerns. Ferland is more the "modern day Lucic", but even he hasn't surpassed 41 points. Roussel was on pace for career numbers, but he's going to miss camp and come into the season late, so we will see how his year goes. So while currently Lucic doesn't look good "on paper", there's still a window of opportunity to find a spot (and make someone else expendable for picks/prospects or even am upgrade elsewhere) and it wouldn't be the first time a player getting out of the Edmonton system that has found new life. But as I've said before, if he performs well, that's simply an added bonus, so it comes down to what else we are getting in return.
  8. I mentioned that we would need to add a small sweetener, so it'll depend on what that would be. I agree that Smith would be a nice addition.
  9. What about Zack Smith and Boedker for LE and Schaller? Cap hit is 7.25 for Vancouver and 7.9 for Ottawa. Salary for next season is 6.25 for Vancouver and 4.9 for Ottawa. Key thing is lowering the term for us. Schaller "replaces" Smith and LE swaps for Boedker. We could waive Boedker and save another million in cap space and he's gone in a year. Perhaps we add a small sweetener as well as they are taking on more salary for the long term, but gain the cap benefits.
  10. I was just going to say that everyone thought Schenn was slow and done in the league and suddenly he became a fan favourite with posters once again criticizing Benning for not re-signing him and suggesting to over pay him to get him to stay here (where the same people criticize Benning also for doing, seems like a trend here). Not saying I'd do a Lucic for LE swap, but we have to look at comparing LE to Lucic and not how he is as a player himself where we all know he's overpaid for what he brings currently. Once Lucic throws a few bruising hits, people will be glad we moved him for LE (but can still acknowledge that he's overpaid). LE can play a good defensive game, but we have many players that can play that same role if needed. I'd say Lucic will make guys like Miller and Ferland feel even bigger with more backup. Any performance boost from Lucic himself will be a bonus. Add in the fact LE will be a distraction now, so it's a benefit to simply move on from him. Plus add in that we may/should get a decent sweetener. IMO Puljujarvi isn't enough because if he isn't good enough to crack our team just yet and we waive him and he's gets claimed then we got nothing or if we keep him on the roster for fear of him being taken, then he eats up a roster spot that could be going to someone more deserving. If Edmonton retains 1.5 million a season on the deal, that changes the complexity of this, which "saves" us the cap space spread out over the contract. I think there are going to be some interesting reactions if a trade like this were to occur and I'll say my piece, but I think we simply have to wait for it all to play out and see what happens when the games are played.
  11. Maybe this is like a Bieksa/Fedorov situation. Milano is the new Bieksa story where the GM was like sign that man now!
  12. Tkachuk-Pageau-Ryan Ennis-Batherson-White Boedker-Tierney-Brown Duclair-Smith-Veronneau Extra forward Chabot-Hainsey Borowiecki-Zaitsev Wolanin-DeMelo Jaros Anderson Nilsson Condon I imagine they keep Condon up for his cap hit at the very least before sending him down. Rumours last year they were trying to trade Anderson though. They are rebuilding though so they probably don't care too much about the quality of the lineup as they probably want to tank again for another year (maybe 2). The only "kid" in that lineup is Batherson who likely won't face the hard minutes. There are no more teams desperate to reach the floor, but there are several teams that want to unload cap still, so the market is saturated. We are likely needing to take on a bad contract in return or have to convince Ottawa that they need him for the longer term benefit of his cap to salary ratio. LE could get looks in that top 6 though. Will be interesting how it plays out now that his bonus should be paid out.
  13. Unfortunately these reasons are why Ottawa would want Backes instead of LE. If that contract is insured, then it's an even less expense for them for the cap hit. Only makes the market tougher to trade LE.
  14. They've been horribly run for years and had a management/ownership that didn't really care until Tavares was almost ready to leave and by then it was too late. They finally got wins and made it to the playoffs, but they are playing some crazy trap system that's got to be boring to watch. Their top point guys dipped by like 20-25 points, but yet still won, which goes to show you how defensive things have gotten there. I don't think NYI want to continue playing this way but if it works with the current personnel, then I don't think they'll complain about playoff revenue. They've also had some weird building agreement which makes it difficult to even get season tickets because they're not playing in one building.
  15. They have 10 forward signed (11 with Colin White), 7 dmen and 3 goalies. They basically need at least 1 more forward and another extra player if they choose to keep 3 goalies up. If they send one down, then one more player if they want a full 23 man roster. They likely will have Batherson, Formenton, Brown, Paul, or even Chlapik battling for that forward spot and the extra spot. We could see Lajoie get a spot who had a hot start last season and Brannstrom could be a wild card in the running. They will have no problem icing a team, but adding LE isn't going to make that team any better. The only real benefit of adding a LE is so it adds to their cap for the following years as well with so many expiring deals and they may have trouble getting to the floor at that point. But that's next season's problem, so they aren't desperate to make a move here and plenty of teams will have players that they will want to dump every year.
  16. This is an interesting point, they may be able to reach the floor now, but with so many expiring deals, they might actually have more trouble getting to the floor since they're not exactly a dream destination right now, but maybe some massive overpayments will bring in players looking for the payout and help them reach the floor, but those will be actual dollars. I was thinking we should retain cap/salary to make a deal (eg for Smith) more appealing, but maybe there's full value here for Ottawa for a full hit. Just need that bonus paid out if not done already.
  17. You need to have real short term memory to genuinely believe this.
  18. 4th line or even the extra forward spot. I was thinking Smith-Beagle-Motte if he's slotted into the lineup. Sure he's a pricey 4th liner, but better than 6 million. He plays a heavier game than Motte and like I've said, he can play center, which on a 4th line could be valuable if say they're stuck out on an icing and Beagle isn't available to take the draw or whatever. Also adds more value if he's utilized on the PK should the centerman be waived out. He might still be "overpaid" but that doesn't make him useless.
  19. Bailey is another big guy (6'4 214lbs) that can skate well from what I've read. Even if Bailey is a step below Virtanen, the point is Virtanen would be a valuable trade asset and most of the attributes that he provides is similarly replaced with someone like Bailey.
  20. Well that's what makes him valuable. And yes it would have to hopefully get someone like a Risto. The point is we have someone that believes there is a legit shot here, which means management must've let him know something that would make him believe so because as it stands barring an impressive camp, he's in the Utica depth zone which is no different had he stayed in Philly. There are plenty of other teams that could give him a better chance at cracking an NHL roster spot right now. So I'm not advocating that we dump him or anything, but just from the sounds of the Bailey interview that something may be up.
  21. Only issue I see is a spot on the NHL club. He just doesn't have that spot (unless he knocks someone out in camp) yet, so I wonder where he gets the impression that he has more opportunity here (maybe he thought so before the Ferland signing) versus Philly unless Philly was just blowing smoke and really didn't think much of him.
  22. Having Bailey here does make it seem like a Virtanen or Motte may be expendable (for what purpose, I'm not sure yet). Based on Bailey's interview, it sounded like he believed there was a real opportunity here to stick and that's why he chose to sign here as opposed to simply staying in Philly where they basically told him that he might crack the roster so they gave him the chance to shop himself by not qualifying him.
  23. If they did retain say 1.5 million, then that essentially covers the cost of the extra year. We would save 1.5 million for the next 3 years and have added 4.5 on the last year in which we could choose to buy out or whatever. On top of this, we would get something additional. No one really knows what it could be, but this would be the key aspect of the trade whether the sweetener has enough positive influence for the team. Oilers retain because they can afford a minor retention to unload a player that does have the extra year of term and free themselves of a player with a NMC that could potentially use that NMC to protect himself from expansion and cost them a more valuable player. There is every reason for them to look at options at moving him which includes retention, just like how we may consider retention to potentially move out LE. The deal may be dead because of the reasons presented, but getting bigger (albeit with speed) has seem to be the mantra this offseason and converting LE to Lucic accomplishes the size and intimidation part. Not saying I would make the trade, but it will really depend on the sweetener for me if it does happen.
  24. Who is suggesting he's still a force? I don't think anyone is wanting to acquire Lucic because of Lucic. It's about the sweetener that we could get back. Any performance boost from Lucic is simply a bonus.
  25. If we waive him, we aren't planning on trading him anymore. He would take up a roster spot in the 13th forward spot still. It will be too much of a headache at that point, so we might as well bury him then.
