[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
theo5789 replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I still don't think the comments were as bad as some are making them out to be, but Benning seems to be more ruthless than I thought and he seems to get things done and isn't afraid to fix his mistakes. -
[Report] Columbus wants to offer sheet Marner
theo5789 replied to RowdyCanuck's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Toronto matches that easily and says thank you for getting him to sign for that amount. You're right in the math that it's 9 million, but after signing Marner, they will send down a forward most likely and they can send down another player and start the season with a 22 man roster instead of 23 which will save them just around the right amount to keep Marner around safely. They probably want Marner at around 10.5, but I imagine he wants at least what Matthews got if not more. If a team wants Marner, then they will have to give up 4 1sts, simple as that. I know Columbus would be taking a big gamble, but I think their team is underrated and with Marner added, they are at least a playoff team for the next little while as long as they have their goaltending situation sorted out. They would have to shed some salary if they got Marner though and could probably replenish some picks in the process as they have some decent players. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

Reading that article, it appears Benning has been in contact with Eriksson, so people can stop with the whole Eriksson is dodging Benning thing. The other thing is Benning himself said the comments were not as egregious as people are making it sound, which is no surprise to me, but some seem to make his comments as if he dragged the entire organization through the mud. There was a tweet suggesting that Benning has mentioned Utica is an option if he plays his NTC, which tells me that there may be some teams that could look into acquiring him but maybe he has been hesitant to waive his clause. So there seems to be some real possibility that he could be dealt. This does make me think that the LE for Lucic rumour has something to it and maybe even Ottawa as that could've been a team that LE may not have wanted to go to. With all this talk though, it does seem unlikely we will see him again in a Canuck uniform. -

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Josh Leivo
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hence why he needs a good camp to get a look in our top 6. We may roll 4 lines, but I doubt we will be spreading the wealth over the lines. Having two solid go-to offensive lines simply makes it harder to defend and having two energy/defensive lines (now with more offensive punch as well with our depth) helps to shift the minutes when needed. I was impressed with Leivo last year and thoroughly enjoyed his game, but he did only put up 18 points in 49 games. I think he can compliment our top guys, but not as a regular which is why he's very good depth that can step into the top 6 if needed IMO. It's certainly going to be an interesting year and I'd like to see how we progress, but I don't think we quite go full on offense. It's still going to be a structured system, but I guess we will see now that Green has different personnel that he didn't have before. That the benefit of being in a hockey market. But curious if FA could be as patient as the Edmonton process for example. Definitely glad to see the depth grow. Definitely don't want our youth to deal with our media here, but would be nice to have a team in Seattle or Portland or something like that to make a trip to occasionally. Not sure how successful a team in Abbotsford would be. Don't think the market will be there for an ECHL team in Vancouver, but maybe Victoria or Langley or someplace like that. -

I definitely agree there will be a lot of fine tuning throughout the season depending on each game and how players are performing. The minutes will depend on if the team is ahead or behind and we will roll 4 lines for sure until it gets to that point. But if we need some offense, unless Leivo is having a good game that night, then he's likely not going to be one of the guys they will be rolling out. You do want to build chemistry in lines at some point though, so generally there are certain line combinations though. So players have to placed on lines to start the game and season, so like I said if he's starting in the top 6, it's because he had a very good camp. Currently on paper he's not surpassing our current "top 6" wingers. We will see how Green handles his new influx of players though along with the ones he's had to work with already. -
[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

Being good on the dot often facing against the top competition is very good attribute. Prior to his injuries, not only was he good defensively, but he did have offensive upside. He's not big physically, but just like someone like Bergeron, you don't know need to be heavy to be a strong defensive center. His name has a little to do with it, but I think based on his play, he probably would've stood out anyway early in his career. The only reason why teams are hesitant in acquiring at this point is because of the injury concerns, so by having a decent year health-wise will take that concern away somewhat. He looks to have a niche of being a 30-35 point 3rd line center that can take on the hard minutes and we just need to show that he still can be that guy to bring his value back up. -

He was interesting a couple of years ago, but I think the ship has sailed for us here. Not sure if I would even trade Goldobin for him at this point. Maybe if they'll take Palmu. -
-
Pittsburgh probably played against him enough to feel it was worth it. He has a bit of a Roussel to his game. You're right that maybe the it's a bit much in term, but I think Tanev should look decent in Pittsburgh. I'm not as confident about Dzingel, but we will see. It may have taken the term offer to get him out of Winnipeg too as 3.5 is probably right around where Winnipeg would've offered to him as well, but maybe they wanted to do a 4 year deal or something instead.

[Signing] Canucks sign Micheal Ferland

We are in a position that it would be beneficial for Gaudette to be in Utica for a year or slightly less, but be in a place consistently so he can focus on his development. It's also more beneficial to try and get Sutter some games and show his worth so he has more value should he be still healthy come trade deadline or next off season. Right now Sutter's value is at an all time low and he doesn't need to be moved IMO to have the cap to sign Boeser anyway. If Sutter is healthy, he adds a lot of value as a strong centerman capable of winning possession and be a good shut down guy. If we want to save a million in a pinch, then Schaller is a no brainier and that's really all we need at this point for some wiggle room anyway. If we can dump LE, then it's just gravy. Next year, given the right progress for Gaudette, then I see him having a full time spot. -

I'd be surprised if Leivo cracks the top 6, but that would mean he came into camp very driven and won that spot which I wouldn't be opposed to. More likely he's a very good depth option that could step into the top 6 if we need a shakeup or for injury coverage. -
This is why you cannot look at point production alone. Far more aspects in play when building a team.
-
Was he? I wasn't even aware he was healthy scratched. That's an even bigger red flag.

Not if they have been distractions all year. They are talented individuals, but they don't necessarily make a better "team". Panarin is certainly a huge loss. Duchene was a rental and didn't really impress in the regular season, but did step up in the playoffs. I don't think the team will be hurting too much from his loss beyond what they lost in trading for him (plus I personally feel like he's the type to float after a big contract signing, so they may have dodged a bullet here, we'll see). Bobrovsky was a headache for them (or for Torts at least) most of the year and at his asking price, it simply wasn't worth it anyway and he hasn't looked as good once Ian Clark left. But goaltending is the issue I see here being a big factor and hopefully Korpisalo has more confidence knowing he's the guy, but Elvis Merzlikins may come in under the radar here. They may feel the effect more a few more years down the road with all the picks they gave up and didn't re-gain from letting these guys walk, but they do have all of their 1sts, so just have to make those picks count.
-
They certainly would be better off if 1 or 2 of the guys actually stayed. But perhaps they play better as a team rather than hoping for individuals to step up.
-
If Ferland's production drops off, he still adds a physical game and punish defenders to wear them down, plus a guy that will stand up for your teammates. If Dzingel drops off, what do you have left? The contract is manageable because it's 2 years, but you have more Gagner in Dzingel than you do with Ferland.
-
Probably want more money or term, didn't get the offer he wanted, so he took what he could get that is closer to his value rather than be overpaid.
-
I think Columbus is underrated, but it's going to come down to their goaltending. Nyquist is a better addition than Dzingel anyway. Their defense is still solid with Jones and Werenski leading the way. Guys like Wennberg and Bjorkstrand will find bigger roles and may see their production go back up as a result and maybe "William Karlsson" themselves in doing so. Atkinson - Dubois - Anderson Jenner - Wennberg - Nyquist Foligno - Texier - Bjorkstrand Hannikainen - Dubinsky - Nash Werenski - Jones Murray - Savard Harrington - Nutivaara Not a team that I would be disappointed in having. Plus 5-10 million in cap space still after signing Werenski if they feel the need to add to the lineup.
-
Miller wasn't on a line with Stamkos or Kucherov regularly. Dzingel played regularly with Stone and Duchene. When Dzingel was traded to Columbus, not really sure who his linemates were, but his production dipped back down. With that said, that point production is all Dzingel provides. Miller plays a heavier game and creates space while being hard on the forecheck. He will stand up for his teammates and can play all forward positions as mentioned with center being a key one. Oh and he also produces points. Miller wasn't available in UFA and is younger. So yes in comparison to the Dzingel signing, he is worth the extra money simply for the difference in playing style along with similar point production (with Miller having more of a resume showing this production which is still higher than Dzingel also) and he is worth the 1st to pry him off a team.

Does look bad, but Carolina still made it further in the playoffs this past season!
-
@73 Percent this. The Ottawa Dzingel, he was playing with two other players trying to play their way out of there and on contract years in Stone and Duchene who got big payouts. He certainly didn't look as good in Columbus, and especially come playoff time. This is why I think 2 years is better to see what type of player you'd be getting rather than a 4 year and potentially get a Gagner. Riskier may not be the right term because a 40 point guy for 3.5 million is still decent, but he's got to hit at least 40 points a season because he doesn't provide much else.
-
In isolation, the Dzingel deal is a decent one as I've mentioned. Considering Carolina lost Ferland and signed Dzingel for similar dollars, it's seems as good as any time to compare them.
-
I don't think he signed for "cheap", but much closer to his market value than I expected. It's right around the Baertschi contract. Personally I like the 2 year deal as he seems like a riskier player to gamble on IMO and he probably likes that he doesn't have to worry about the expansion and maybe wants to stay out East. If I had to choose between Ferland and Dzingel at the same price, I'm glad we got Ferland.
