Looking forward to seeing Ferland, but he can't hold Gino's jockstrap. -
I don't disagree that finding a top pairing RHD will cost the least through the draft (still hoping we can land Risto somehow). We will see next draft if we are no longer drafting dmen. Based on one draft, I'm not concerned because maybe it just so happened that the BPA all landed as non dmen and the Canucks felt comfortable not needing to take one with the recent signings in Teves and Rafferty. Those depth dmen are more like to be found in those later rounds anyway and you get them for free as free agents (free picks basically) that are further along in their development so you have a better idea what you're getting since dmen are a bit more unpredictable especially in the later rounds. So like I said, unless there was a dman in the first couple of rounds that we should've taken instead, it's not really a concern.
-
Were there dmen you would've taken over Podkolzin or Hoglander? It's a crapshoot the rest of the draft and would be naive to think we could hit on a legit RHD by the 4th round and on (we didn't have a 3rd rounder). We have Woo in the system. Could we use more? Sure, but we took the BPA which is constantly preached by management and fans alike. It is much easier to find complementary pieces later on as you can target them and simply pay the price if you think they're the missing link.

[Signing] Bruins re-sign Danton Heinen

I'm well aware, but it just seems the trend these days are that the (short term) bridge deals are over. They are mostly for the higher profile players which is why we hear about them more. -

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

Well if people can forgive and forget for Tryamkin, then why not for LE? At least for as long as he remains a Canuck. From what I remembered, the vocal crowd did not get on Tryamkin's case as much LE is getting and really the only noise now is that he simply bolted to the KHL and any other conflict had more to do with Willie than Tryamkin himself. The point is LE said he doesn't see everything eye to eye 100% of the time and Tryamkin is a clear case of basically saying the same thing without the same scrutiny. LE's agent has said for hockey reasons that it may be best if he's moved elsewhere, but the article notes that he isn't demanding a trade. He has a full NTC, so he's letting teams know that if there is any interest at all that the NTC is not restricting potentially. It is favourable for the agent to do this just in case it brings in more calls to Benning. Nothing has been said that he blatantly wants out and the man himself has said he's still having fun here despite the struggles and he will continue fighting on. Let's keep in mind that Goldobin's agent (Larionov) mentioned that his client's treatment has been "very disappointing" and yet despite Goldobin's struggles, he isn't faced with the same hostility. So just as much as LE is a vet and supposedly has full intent on what he's saying, management know how to handle these situations. They continue to work on Goldobin and dump guys like Dahlen in a pinch before any troubles arise until after the fact. Players/agents disagree with coaches and management all the time, so this isn't anything new. I disagree that he's been given "plenty" of fair shakes. He played with the Sedins who were really a shell of their former selves as they longer could keep up with the speed of the game. He played a brief stint with EP and was producing until he was bumped off the line to try and spark a struggling Boeser. And instead of simply swapping him and Boeser, LE got dropped back into the checking role again. He had a brief stint at the end of the season with Bo and Pearson. I do agree that he shouldn't be gifted any spot or minutes, but he may be used to a different system that allows him the opportunity to gel with the top 6. Hence why he doesn't see things eye to eye 100% of the time. It's not about giving him the benefit of the doubt, but rather the comments were mild in nature in response to the question posed to him and the reaction in response is simply overblown with the already pent up "anger". The comments have added fuel to the fire, but in isolation, it's really nothing. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on

Well of course it comes down to training camp as it should. If Goldobin gets waived, it means he hasn't stepped up for another season, so I cannot see him suddenly being claim worthy being another year older and still cannot crack the roster. But he's certainly more at risk to be claimed than LE. I'm not so sure he's in Green's doghouse just yet, but I'm sure we will find out soon enough. Consistency is key for sure. He's only shown forward progression so far in his short career, so hopefully the trajectory continues. A part of me wants him to break out after he's signed to his next contract though -

He was asked why his offense has depleted and he felt like he's had the trust from previous coaches that he doesn't feel he has the same of today. It's not like LE came out with a press release ripping into the coach and team. Tryamkin was speculated to suggest he didn't like how he was being coached and no one is ripping into Tryamkin the same as they are for LE. In fact many seem to be in full support of Tryamkin returning and surprise surprise rag on the coach that they didn't like. The comments haven't changed anything really as they seem rather mild to me, but it's simply comes down to the people that have been wanting him out looking for any excuse to shun him. Just doesn't seem fair the extremes he's enduring from some over a bunch of media speculation. The media knows what triggers the fanbase and releases what they want to set them off. It's up to the fans to not get so engulfed by this. It's the whole Linden situation again where people have come up with a bunch of speculation and because Linden hasn't said no to anything, then it must be true. So while I'm not denying that he hasn't said what he said (although I haven't read the Swedish article, nor do I understand Swedish), it's a very mild comment IMO. LE likely told his agent to deal with it. He doesn't need to answer those calls. Benning has been in contact with his agent, so there's nothing really here IMO. LE can clear the air when he needs to report to the team if he chooses to do so. The article where that interview was brought up mentions basically everything I've said as well. I'm just reiterating the article itself, so take it for what it's worth. Well the microscope is on him now, so I'm not surprised anything bad that can be brought up will be put into the spotlight. Kyle Connor had 9 hits all season, Gaudreau had 12 hits. Do they not have drive and compete? Hitting was never in his game, so not sure why it's a metric for his compete level. He PKed regularly and the PK was decent and made the smart defensive plays that go under the radar hence the "little things". I felt his defensive game was fine. Still not worth his paycheque for sure, but not a concern for me. He was offered the contract and took it. Should he have turned it down in fear that he wouldn't live up to it? I doubt he's happy with himself and would love to boost his offense if not for the team then be good enough to be able to be traded out with ease. He played with declining Sedins who's game would've been more effective with the Sedins in their prime. He played briefly with EP and actually produced decently until he was pulled from the line to try and spark BB who was off to a cold start (and this may be where the comments stem from). I don't think LE has played with BB, at least not a regular stint but maybe I need my memory refreshed here. At the end of the day, we all can agree that LE hasn't played up to what his contract suggests he should. I'll wait until more factual information to come out before deciding on LE's character, but based on what we do know, I just don't think he's as deserving of some of the response he's getting. -

theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is exactly the reason why this is going where it is. If BB or EP said the exact same thing, I'm sure people will see it in a similar way as what I've set forth (or blamed someone else rather than the player eg the coach) because they will actually support the player. So these comments have just spurred the people that have wanted him gone already which doesn't mean it's how it's being portrayed. No one is pointing out that LE has said he's still having fun playing and he will continue to "fight on", but only remember whatever negative they can pinpoint. The agent may have made a point that he's open to being moved as he does have a full NTC, perhaps to let other teams know if they're interested, but has reiterated that he's not demanding a move. He didn't answer his calls? He's not obliged to and Benning has been in touch with his agent. He supposedly moved his family? We've heard stories of players buying homes in certain places but it never really happened. Why would Eriksson move his family back to Dallas not knowing where he may even end up? Maybe they just so happen to have a summer home there, who knows? Who knows what will happen in the next couple months. Perhaps he will be traded or waived and sent to the AHL and that's fine too, I'll support that. I just don't think we need to continue dragging LE through the mud with over-dramatization and certainly don't believe in booing a player in a Canuck uniform unless for far worse circumstances. I will laugh and be ashamed if he does indeed get booed at this point unless we do hear more real facts that suggest he's as bad as people are seemingly making him out to be. If we don't want the distraction, then why magnify it even more only to make it even worse for everyone involved? I didn't hear anyone boo Gagner when he was called back up to the Canucks after he made some comments about management. I trust Benning and crew are doing what they can at this point to do what's best for the team and if starting him on the Canucks this year is what they decide, then so be it. -

This is where I disagree. It doesn't have to happen and doesn't need to happen. I personally cannot stop anything from happening, but I'm going to continue to reiterate what has actually happened rather than blowing things out of proportion unnecessarily which negatively affects the team. -

If we can certainly move him without much damage to our team, then I'm not opposed to it. But I don't think we as fans/supporters need to make the situation worse for the team. Why force the drama? Leave that to the garbage media. -

I think only the irrational would boo him. I feel like people are blowing things out of proportion from their desire to be rid of him. But that's just my opinion. There have been far worse situations that are actually "booing" worthy. We should be supporting our players and hoping for the best. His comments were a mere not agreeing with the coach 100% of the time. It's not like he ripped into the team and city and the fans (although it almost appears that way with the reactions/overreactions here). -

Agreed. Just think that Baertschi could potentially look okay alongside Sutter and Virtanen on a defensive line with a bit of offensive punch. And Leivo on the "4th" line with Beagle and Motte to create energy. Goldobin doesn't fit the bottom 6, so he's either in that spot or as an extra. With him in the top 6 (and assuming effectively so), that pushes the scoring down throughout the lineup. If Goldobin is the extra then it'll likely be Baer with Bo's line, Leivo on Sutter's line with Schaller on the 4th. Eriksson, if still here, could throw a wrench into this (I know you're opinion in that you think he's gone one way or another). Eriksson could be put on Bo's line to boost value or even re-spark his offense. He could be put on the Sutter line where he has chemistry and be back to the defensive system. Many potential options. Someone will have to be waived and with Schaller looking like he's the least versatile of the group (and least potential for growth), he's the odd one out for me if LE isn't moved (I don't think he will be sent to Utica, but who knows). -
I could see Stecher signing a one year extension with the expansion in mind. Tanev will be left unprotected if he's still with this team by then. So maybe Tryamkin if he also doesn't sign a short term deal to see if he likes his return. Juolevi simply for potential will be protected. Myers has given us the option to protect him or not and I'm sure he's comfortable with being taken by Seattle or not with the idea that he's signing close to "home" and Seattle isn't far.

I think Ferland may be looking at around or slightly more than what Miller makes, but I bet he wants term. He is more physical, but offensively maxed out at 41 points despite top 6 minutes whereas Miller has had a 58 point season only a season ago. Miller is more versatile in that he can play all forward positions and play respectably defensively. Miller is indeed the better player IMO. I think the player we may have missed out on is Nyquist simply because of the rumours that we had interviews with him while no mention of Ferland. I think Benning wanted to add a skilled guy to go with Bo and Pearson while they create havoc. I should add that with that reasoning, I'm curious to see how Goldobin would fare with Bo and Pearson. -
[Report] Vegas looking to trade Nikita Gusev
theo5789 replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Depends what the definition of a lower tier prospect is. I would move someone like Perron if he's considered a "prospect". How about a Palmu or Jasek? I would go as high as a Brisebois who was a former 3rd rounder (which can be viewed as a later 2nd rounder). I like Brisebois, but think the LD is going to fill up soon if we add Rathbone and/or Tryamkin this year and to get someone with Gusev's potential for the top 6 and may only cost 4 million a season for a couple of years, I'd take the gamble. We will have to move out a forward to proceed with this though and it is a gamble considering no one really knows how Gusev will perform at the NHL level. I don't think Vegas wants to see what his potential may be in their division and conference though at a low cost. -

We saw many players like Goldy waived last season and the years before and went unclaimed. Teams don't generally have the room for a project player when they have many of their own to sort out. Not to say it's impossible, but he's only a year older and still doesn't have stand out numbers aside from a hot start and we can't be the only team that knows of his deficiencies. LE may surely go unclaimed, but LE can play a defensive role and be a top PK which IMO is more important than throwing some hits. MacEwen has shown decent offensive prowess in the AHL, but he's going to have to learn the game at the NHL level and with the way Green has deployed him would suggest he wasn't ready last season, so we will see how he does in camp. Jake's game is very north-south. Which should translate to a good forecheck-backcheck type game. Playing the PK is more positional and that doesn't appear to be his niche, so it doesn't really shock me that he's not on the PK. Green has said that he expects the 24 year old Jake to be the best, so we will see what Green has in store for his development. All we do know is every year Virtanen has been upping his point totals and earning more trust from Green from improving his defensive game, so I'm happy with his progress so far. -
[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
theo5789 replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
1) He did indeed say he didn't see eye to eye 100 percent. Ice time may be one issue, but it could be anything really. The key is that he said not 100 percent though meaning it's not like there's a rift between them and it's rare that everyone agrees with everyone 100 percent of the time. This was a Google translate on an article and he was asked about his offense and maybe he was simply hoping for more ice time in offensive situations to get his numbers back up. 2) I didn't actually know about this until looking this up just now. Benning may have called LE directly and he may not be obliged to answered (I would generally avoid calls from my boss if I was on my vacation/break), but it does sound like Benning has gotten in touch with LE's agent. "Benning was asked at today's presser if he had spoken with Eriksson. Said he'd been very busy lately but had tried calling twice, left messages but hadn't heard back. Had spoke with his agent, though." 3) The agent simply said for hockey reasons that maybe he's better off playing elsewhere. It seems to be reiterated that he's not demanding a trade, but simply open to one considering he does have a full NTC this year. His colleague has said that he's a Vancouver player and basically isn't going to give up on his career. This could come across as he's simply not going to retire, or maybe even that he's not ready to quit so he can keep "fighting on" in which he said at his end of season presser. LE also mentioned that he's still having fun playing despite his struggles which doesn't sound like what a disgruntled player would say. Sure he could do himself some favours by releasing his own statement, but at the same time he isn't obliged to. Even if he did, I'm sure people will still complain about how it isn't genuine and still rag on him anyway, so I really see no difference. I'm certain that LE hasn't been happy with his play and that he wishes he could get maybe a similar treatment that BB got when he struggled out of the gate, but that's only to try and boost his offense. He is putting his full effort defensively and Green trusts him in that role and maybe LE feels he's got more to his game. Everything isn't peachy for sure, but it seems extreme to suggest he's being a "self-entitled brat" or throwing any "temper tantrums", at least not from what I've seen so far. There has been far worse examples in the league IMO, but everything is blown out of proportion simply because many want him out of the lineup even before this all came out. I bet if EP had the same comments, the same people will be calling for Green's head instead or at least looking at it in a different light. -

Eriksson for the 4th line spot and Goldy for the extra spot if this is how it plays out. I don't think I've seen Leivo or Virtanen PK yet. We want to keep Horvat off the PK if possible unless we want an offensive threat on the PK. Same goes for Miller. LE is the best PKer option of the bunch. -
