  1. Just wait until before the season when we shouldn't waive any of our players in fear they will all get claimed so we should trade them all for picks. These guys who no one really knows will suddenly have so much value at that point especially if they do get claimed.
  2. Saying Johansson isn't afraid of the physical stuff is the same as Baertschi not afraid of the physical stuff. They don't shy away from it, but they're not aggressors. Baertschi is underrated and is very similar to Johansson and is cheaper, but both are not what Miller provides. Johansson and Nyquist both have no fights to their names. Nyquist is the most skilled, I agree, but Miller has very similar offensive production (56, 58, 46 points in his last 3 seasons compares to Nyquist's 48, 40, 60 in his last 3) on top of his physical play. Nyquist would've been a nice addition to Miller, but Miller is the type of player we are missing in our top 6. Miller had 1.5 hits average per game while both Johansson and Nyquist had 0.5 hits average. Back to the fights, Miller has fought (not the heavyweight type, but has gone up against Ferland, Kesler types). This is important because it shows he will stand up for his teammates and this is something we want to "protect" EP and he can actually play to a level to keep up with him. Miller is important because he will be forechecking and willing board battles to get to the skill guys in EP and BB or work well on a tenacious line with Bo and Pearson. Johansson and Nyquist would've been nice adds, but Miller is what we need and wasn't available in UFA and he comes in under UFA value. That unfortunately comes at a cost.
  3. If you think they are similar players, then you don't know these players. It's a very weak argument to suggest so. We wanted grit with skill in our top 6, Johansson and Nyquist do not provide that. Ferland is a lesser player too. It's funny complaints seem to happen only after Benning has made his moves. Last couple of years, we made several UFA signings and people complained about every player signed for whatever reasons and now it's the better route? Yes we traded a 1st, but he is the best player from the "secondary" tier and comes at a price. If Miller was a UFA, he would be getting paid more and with more term. I'd argue that because he signed in Tampa with their supposed tax break that he took a lesser deal there which we are now benefitting from as well.
  4. Let me guess, all you looked at was Ceci's +/-? Nylander bouncing back to a 60 point player still does not make him worth taking on 9+ million in cap space.
  5. If you get us down to a 23 man roster, we have just enough cap to get Boeser signed for around 7-8 million if needed. We don't need to trade Tanev as a cap dump. Anyone else we "dump" is simply for more wiggle room. Our cap situation is just fine.
  6. I don't expect Sutter to be traded this offseason. I, too, am hoping he strings together a decent season and expect Gaudette to get bigger minutes in Utica. This is the only way to up Sutter's value while still developing Gaudette. However if we are looking like a team fighting for a wild card/playoff spot, I'm curious if we decide to move on from Sutter if he is contributing towards that success.
  7. I'm not sure if we are necessarily grooming Gaudette for the same role. If anything, if Sutter is indeed moved, I'd expect Beagle to take on more of the load as Gaudette continues to get sheltered. Gaudette was excellent in college because he was the go-to offensive driver whereas he's being expected to play more defensively here. I'm not sure if he's being coached that way or if he's afraid to make some mistakes and has been playing it safe. I think if/when Gaudette does make it full time, I assume we may consider running 3 offensive lines and an energy/checking line as opposed to our current set up with two "defensive" lines. I think this switch will occur with our younger top 6 maturing to take on bigger minutes and understanding the rigors, so there is less need to shelter them from the tougher assignments.
  8. With his health issues, I can see why no team wanted to give him that. That doesn't mean there was not much interest in the player though.
  9. So we take on a 7 million dollar player who was on pace for 40 points last season and retain on Tanev essentially making it cost about 9+ million to acquire him and lose depth on our defense that won't be able to be replaced with quality with the cap spent already and this would be a great deal for us? If they wanted Tanev with 50% retained, they should've given us Zaitsev and Kapanen (while there was no rumour to this, it's something I would've been happy with and think many others too). This deal would've freed up space (which we now know would be about like 5 million in savings. Only deal I'd consider now to save them is Tanev retained for Ceci and a pick.
  10. With a comment like that, you'd think the Canucks had signed him.
  11. Or maybe he wanted to control his fate for the expansion. So far it seems like he's enjoyed staying out East. I expected him to sign for around 3.5 million, so the fact he got those numbers would suggest that maybe there was interest, but Buffalo was the highest bidder and they had to overpay to get him as a recent bottom team. Buffalo needed a vet winger, so it works out for both sides.
  12. Bieksa for picks, Garrison for pick, Lack for picks, Burrows for Dahlen (looked incredible at the time), Hansen for pick and prospect, Vanek for prospect, Kesler netted a 1st (but we knew that he put us over a barrel in that deal), Nilsson for a pick, Del Zotto for a pick. What were the missed ones? Vrbata didn't allow us to trade him to a team that could use him, Hamhuis was almost traded, Sedins retired rightfully so.
  13. IMO, I rather fork out the money for say a Norris winner rather than pay a player above their worth and hope they blossom. There are instances like this that yes it may have been beneficial to have signed him long term soon, but then I look at someone like Nylander and they've got to be regretting that contract already. Or someone like Duchene who seemed to just coast after his big deal until contract year came around again. I rather pay the player that has earned it rather than regret the signing and be stuck with it for a long time as they become not only not worth the contract, but also untradeable unless as almost a cap dump. If they never become a "bargain" by the end of it, then you've simply overpaid for nothing at the start of it. Let the player prove themselves. If they become unaffordable, then you can at least explore moving the player at their highest value to gain back a high return to replenish the loss instead of having an anchor.
  14. Interesting idea, we seem to have a few options for call up for a 4th line like MacEwen and likely Bailey. Maybe even Schaller if he's waived. But in a pinch it's an option, but we've also seen Biega given that role before also, so not sure if he would be the go to option in this case. The fact that Fantenberg is capable of playing both sides on defense makes him a very useful depth dman though.
  15. He's not the traditional 2nd line offensive producer, but when healthy, he was often on matchup duty so he took a lot of minutes and the harder ones. Pretty sure if he was healthy, this would've continued and he would've been logging 2nd/high 3rd line minutes against the top opposition.
  16. It's too bad Sakic, Yzerman, Neidermeyer, etc all didn't want to play closer to home so their family could watch them play more. Doesn't seem everyone wants to necessarily play closer to "home".
  17. The point of Miller isn't just about points although he's had 56, 58, 47 points in his last 3 seasons. Also no guarantee that he signs here. Johansson is like Baertschi who's basically one more concussion from calling it a career. You want young and versatile, then look no further than Miller. Also Johansson taking less than a faceoff a game this past season and hovering around 30% on those draws would suggest he doesn't play center in comparison to Miller who took well over 500 draws and was just below 50%. So yes Johansson wouldn't have cost a 1st, but you're getting a significantly lesser player.
  18. Schaller didn't start off well, but finished off the year decently. His PPG was not far off from the previous season that he was praised for. He just wasn't the physical presence we hoped he would be.
  19. If dead cap stopped us from signing Gardiner, thank goodness for dead cap. That's a win for LE finally!
  20. Cue the Benning haters for not purposely having someone file for arbitration to have a secondary buyout window just in case we need it. It's like Benning has no plan or strategy in anything he does!
  21. If you don't think we should ever trade a 1st round pick to improve the team, then that's just being naive. Teams have been in funks for a decade, so I don't think you appreciate the fact that Benning has built the depth in really what was only 3 years of actual rebuild.
  22. After the Skinner signing, any signing looks good for Buffalo now.
  23. And to fill that other top 6 spot, we currently have Eriksson, Baertschi, Virtanen, Goldobin, Leivo, Perron, Bailey, MacEwen and even Roussel when he returns. Who knows maybe Motte or Gaudette might even click there. I wouldn't be surprised if we tried Boeser with Pearson and Horvat and maybe giving Virtanen a look with EP and Miller. I like what we have to work with so that losing out on this "extra" top 6 signing isn't all that concerning for me. If any of those guys step up then there simply isn't any missed opportunity here.
  24. I love how the Benning haters just read the title of this and didn't even read the post and just started bashing Benning. With that said, the post doesn't have much to do with the title, so it is misleading. With that also said, MacEwen will get his opportunity to win a spot in camp, it is up to him to earn it. There is an opening and maybe 6 or 7 players that are auditioning for a top 6 spot. As for Benning, before the season even ended, there were questions about addressing our needs in free agency and while majority of people were dreaming about adding a Karlsson or Panarin, Benning had come out and said that we didn't have as much cap space as it may seem. He knew the concerns and didn't want to target a 7+ million dollar top 6 forward, so he acquired a top 6 guy at a good contract. He knew he needed to address the D, which people were asking, he has done that. He knew he needed to add more size, which people were asking for, and he did that. We can still sign Boeser and be under the cap, so he budgeted properly without putting himself in a spot where he needed to dump cap and give up a premium to do so. He knew the Luongo situation was a possibility, but had hoped he would go on LTIR in which he rightfully could have, however his current team wanted him to retire instead. Luongo retiring now was the best case scenario for us aside from going on LTIR. So the only player we may have missed out on is Nyquist because of the rumours and he could've been had for under 6 million too as it appears. Now we will hope a current player shines within our budget (and we have plenty of options), simple as that.
