  1. I could see the possibility that this is just a ploy so that when Marner signs for 12 or less, then he's seen as some hero that left money on the table to stay with the mighty Leafs and Dubas' magical plan is complete. Lou has helped the Leafs out of trouble once, so wouldn't surprise me if they're in on it to suggest they may offer sheet but never do. It also could scare other teams from making lower offers thinking that NYI will outbid them anyway.
  2. I hope this is the consistent message throughout the season if he indeed does only put up like 10 points and say Hutton puts up 20 elsewhere. There's a crowd out there that is going to nitpick on that for sure.
  3. A shorter bridge would mean he gets paid big earlier, so not sure how that's better. A long term deal means you have to pay more now and back on significant progress down the road therefore really doesn't add up to much savings over the duration of it. In 4 years we will have a better idea of what player we will get out of Boeser and the cap should go up to help with whatever increase should he actually earn it. No one is complaining about the Bo Horvat deal that takes him right to UFA which looks like a steal as soon as he stepped on the ice after signing it. Boeser at 6 million may just be the same feeling. Getting players at their market value based on today is what makes the deal look good over the duration of it otherwise there is expectation for him to play up to his contract immediately rather than grow into it. If in 4 years, Boeser has lost desire to be here or is simply unaffordable to keep, then we move on and gain assets. We have Podkolzin who could potentially take over and who knows who may be able to step up at that point like a Kole Lind, Hoglander, etc.
  4. I think Goldobin gets under 1.5 million on a one year deal. He had a marginally better PPG than Leivo, but Leivo can backcheck and play physical. Goldy will have a hard time cracking the line up if he doesn't win a top 6 spot. Although I'm curious how he would fare alongside Pearson and Horvat.
  5. There was a tweet earlier saying he may have gotten 250k-500k more had he gone to arb.
  6. It makes sense for the Canucks to also do another year to see if he can remain consistent and maybe not burn out in parts of the season. Also to see if he didn't just go all out that one year for a pay out. If he can put up another season like he did, then he will have earned a longer deal. It just makes sense on both sides.
  7. Backfire how? It'll depend on the structure of the contract, but in 4 years time, we should have more cap to work with as the vets we signed to take on the hard minutes will be expired and replaced with cheaper depth and opening up the cap space to sign him to a raise under the assumption he's played well enough to earn a significant raise. 6 million for 4 years is right where I was hoping he would sign, but hopefully it's not structured so that the qualifying offer required for the 5th year will be a significant raise.
  8. With the Canuck luck, let's wait until this coming November and make the same comparison. I think our starting lineup last year wasn't too bad, but I agree it does look better this year to start on paper at least.
  9. I get the feeling he's one of those guys you hate to play against but love to have on your team.
  10. He was getting tonnes of chances last season that didn't covert. He was also creating a ton of chances from his tenacious forechecking. If we end up with more skill down the lineup like Leivo on his line, who knows they might click and produce at a decent clip.
  11. You wouldn't know it from the reports from TSN. No mention of Leivo ever, but I'm sure they will praise moving Carcone in the Ceci deal.
  12. Only problem is I can't see them looking to unload a guy they recently traded for and signed and he had interviews about how he's looking forward to playing for the Leafs.
  13. Depending on how the deal is structured, a 4 year deal could be tricky. Look at the Meier deal and the final year ends up as RFA but a 10 million dollar salary. He would have to be qualified at that salary. It pretty much sets that they pay him at least 10 million for the 5th year of RFA or we don't qualify and he hits UFA a year early. Of course there will be negotiations prior to try and lock him longer for lower, but the advantage goes towards the player in this instance. So while a 4 year deal at 6 million is reasonable, we will have to see the structure to determine what the future is beyond those 4 years.
  14. I really enjoyed Leivo's game last year. Hopefully he finds a nice role here on the 3rd line and fill in for the top 6 when needed.
  15. The media will paint it as it being all under Dubas' genius plan. There will be no panic. They will spin it as "Toronto set to acquire 4 1st round picks! Dubas once again is a grandmaster" and then the Marner bashing will ensue about him being a disloyal player and a bad character and what not.
  16. They have Horton on LTIR which saves them over 5 million. And they will need to send down a forward, so they really almost have about 10 million in space. They really only need to move out a couple million more if they can lock him up before an offer sheet is signed and get him around 11.5-12 million.
  17. We should trade Tanev (50% retained) for Ceci and a 3rd or something. Saves them over a couple million more to get them around 12 million in cap space to lock up Marner. They will be in tough to re-sign Ceci anyway after this season.
  18. I'm sure he wants to stay in Toronto, there's no doubt about that. These rumours may even have been brought out from his agent to speed the negotiations up. The team keeps making deals that clear room and then they fill up that space making other signings instead of making Marner the priority. Toronto has committed to everyone but him so far. So curious to see what the hold up is and which side is the problem (could be both).
  19. If he loved Toronto that much, he would've signed already to a deal that is manageable for the team. He likely wants his fair share after the team gave Nylander and Matthews their "fair" deals. If they are going to play games with him, then the loyalty isn't going both ways and that means a lot to players too.
  20. They currently have the room to fit all their guys, but adding Marner squeezes them. If they are willing to give Marner 12.67 million for 5 years, Rantanen who put up a similar PPG to Marner isn't going to sign for 8.5-9. They will need to take into account then all the other signing keeping in mind that on 4 years they will likely have at least 3 players signed to over 10+ million. It's not impossible, it'll be a calculated risk, but unlike with Panarin, they will be losing 4 1sts that they could be putting into the lineup as ELCs.
  21. I still think people are blowing his comments out of proportion in an attempt to justify forcing him out in unreasonable means. His comments were mild. I bring up the Ottawa situation where they were "unprofessional" and yet Duchene locks up a mega contract and Chabot still being on the same team. Others were involved too. Teams and management can handle players that are unhappy with coaching decisions as I'm certain it happens all the time. Sometimes the player is the problem or it could be the coach, but seems like LE gets no benefit of the doubt because some have been wanting him out even before this situation added fuel to their fire. So at the end of the day, the comments play no real part here and it really goes back to him not being as good as his contract dictates. We can continue to work with him and try to get the most we can out of him or have to accept taking on someone like a Lucic if we don't want to pay the price to unload him. If Benning gave up a 1st or whatever to simply dump his cap, I'm sure Benning would get grief for that too. If management decides to send him to the minors then I'll believe more into thinking there were more pressing issues behind the scenes. Until then, there's a long summer ahead to sort things out still.
  22. The Islanders under Trotz could be a regular playoff team. 4 1sts from them might not be a huge gamble to take on. Lou did them a favour by taking on Martin for peanuts and Dubas still has them in trouble, so I guess Lou is done doing them any more favours. For those who suggested Columbus, their playoff hopes aren't as high in the foreseeable future even with the addition of Marner, so those 1sts will be very valuable. If they traded off the players they lost and gained picks, then that may have mitigated the risk of this offer sheet. I don't think they're in a position to do this. Colorado could try it, but they have Rantanen on their own team that is a target. If they're trying to get him to a reasonable deal, then adding Marner will inflate his ask. Their 27 million in cap space will be depleted and they will still have to sign Zadorov, Compher and Kamenev. It puts them in a position to have to sell off depth pieces for cheap and not much room moving forward with MacKinnon's contract being up in 4 years amongst others even sooner.
  23. We would only be without our first two picks if we make the playoffs next year. And it would be with the help of two top 6 acquisitions in Miller and Gusev potentially. If Gusev takes a two year deal, that lines us up nicely to trade him if his value is high then (maybe a higher return than a 2nd) and have Podkolzin step in as an ELC to help with any cap issues. Cap-wise it would be tricky, but not impossible to manage for a potential top 6 guy making 4 million. It would be interesting if we really wanted him and Vegas refuses to trade him to us because of the division rivalry.
