[Signing] Maple Leafs re-sign Cody Ceci
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'm wondering if they're considering dressing a 12 forward, 6 dman, 2 goalie lineup to start the year. Meaning they waive a couple of dmen and a forward to start the year which I believe would bury about 2 million. So add that to the 4ish million space and the 5 million Horton LTIR which gives them just over 11 million to start the season. They would be cap compliant and to their benefit, their farm team is in Toronto so it should be easy to call up players if needed. -
[Signing] Maple Leafs re-sign Alexander Kerfoot

Cue the Dubas is a genius articles from TSN and SN. -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Ben Chiarot

French sounding last name, so should be a fit there. Jets just losing all of their depth. -
[Signing] Flames sign Cam Talbot
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Smitty is in Edmonton now, hence Talbot signing with Calgary. But I agree with that you're saying in that goaltending still looks like a weakness that they haven't resolved. They got some stability last year which is why they performed like they did, so if Rittich can be consistent all year or if Talbot can handle the split duties, then they would be a threat. They are pretty close against the cap though. They have 9.5 million and have to sign Tkachuk, Bennett, Mangiapane and Rittich plus another forward or two. If we can move Tanev's contract out without cap in return, I could see us acquiring Hamonic who seems like he may be on the outs in Calgary (but perhaps wants to stay out in Western Canada) and may be a cap dump for Calgary. -
[Rumor] Nashville interested in Gaudette at the draft
theo5789 replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well if Gaudette plays his way onto the lineup, then good for him and for the team, but that means he earned it on his own merit rather than believing he's more suited to develop at the NHL level with mentorship. As it stands right now for me, until I see him in preseason, he's Utica bound. -
[Rumor] Nashville interested in Gaudette at the draft
theo5789 replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well I'm for keeping Sutter because I feel he will help our team if healthy. Keeping him another year and hopefully a relatively healthy one should boost his value. Utica doesn't have a lot of center depth themselves, so not sure how wise it is to put him out of Utica in a winger role. We may have a Perron or Goldobin maybe sent down if they clear waivers that could be dominating in the AHL that could be worth a look if we are down a winger. It really depends on what we are looking to replace which is the point of having the depth. -
[Rumor] Nashville interested in Gaudette at the draft
theo5789 replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
The reason he would be playing more with the Canucks than Utica is likely because Sutter is injured again. Until we open up room at the NHL level, I can't see Gaudette getting much time barring injury and that's not a bad thing for his development if it's to be a center. I don't think we need Sutter to be a mentor simply because we have Maholtra in the system to do just so and it's not like EP needed a mentor directly on his line. -
Tanev has been one of our better dmen, but gets put in a ton of trade proposals. I've seen several proposals here wanting to trade Boeser too. As long as people aren't expecting a #1 or 2 dman out of Myers, then he should be fine comparatively to what we have had previously. There are people here crying over the loss of Schenn (who the majority, including myself, had suggested he was done and couldn't play at the NHL level anymore) and like him or not, Myers is an upgrade on Schenn who many had pencilled in as our #6. Myers simply bumps down our current depth, which upgrades the team.

[Rumor] Nashville interested in Gaudette at the draft
theo5789 replied to Ossi Vaananen's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I don't see how it would be bad for him to get top 6 C duties in Utica and be an early call up should injuries arise. Get him taking a ton of draws because it's something I feel he needs to improve on and he would get that opportunity more at the AHL level rather than a sheltered NHL role. If he's coveted by other GMs, that's a good thing. Nashville can have Gaudette for Fabbro. -
Why do I get the feeling that had Toronto made the exact same signing that he would be put under the good signing column and cherry pick the good stats? The article suggests that Myers is a good player just not at his price tag, yet Panarin is a signing despite acknowledging that he's overpaid. But it's justified because it's the premium for a UFA and it's good because it's like the Tavares signing. The article suggests that Tanev was a bad signing because he's a 4th liner. He praises him as a 4th liner, but an overpriced 4th liner with term. What he fails to acknowledge is that Tanev was actually playing 3rd line minutes, so if he was a 4th liner, then they had a very sheltered "3rd line". The article also ignores that Tanev was a prime PK forward for them and is a scrappy guy. Oh and he led his team in hits with 278 or 3.5 a game. The article keeps suggesting that Myers is a 4/5 guy yet is consistently a 20+ min dman. He's easily a 3/4 and often called upon to take on more with injuries to his teammates, but can handle all duties thrown his way. If he was excellent in every aspect, he wouldn't have been signed for a 6 million deal. He's basically a slightly lesser version of Edler but got paid the "premium" as a UFA.

[Signing] Lightning sign Luke Schenn
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Tampa is in more of a cap crunch than me are, they needed cheap depth who they can offer a spot to while their top guys take on most of the minutes. We got Benn and Myers who are both significant upgrades in comparison to Schenn and would take up spots in the top 6. It's arguable if Fantenberg is better than Schenn or not, but Fantenberg is at best a #7 right now, so he would be guaranteed a playing spot. Fantenberg is paid more, but as mentioned, 700k is more money in the pocket in Tampa. I'm certain that Benning tried. It's probably much like how Montreal offered Benn the same contract, but he simply chose us over them. -
[Proposal] Loui Erickson trade
theo5789 replied to canuckistani's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Sometimes silence speaks volumes too. There may be something going on behind the scenes, but no one actually knows, but yet people are seem so outraged for reasons unknown. I don't get it. There have been far worse instances where coaches are called out by the players (that we've seen publicly) and less has been done about it. Chabot called out his coach in Ottawa and I imagine no one would say a single thing about him possibly being a distraction if we acquired him. So it really comes down to him simply not being worth his contract, which is back to where we started before the story came out about his comments about Green. LE is simply a player being paid too much for what he provides, but he can still play a role at the NHL level. I don't get the threats to try and get him to agree to a "mutual" termination and making him "ride buses in Utica". He needs to play better (offensively) and that's about it IMO until we hear more into it if there is more to it. -
[Proposal] Loui Erickson trade

So Marleau cost a 1st to dump and we somehow get a pick back to dump a full cap hit over 3 seasons for a prospect and project player? -
[Proposal] Loui Erickson trade
theo5789 replied to canuckistani's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Honestly if there was a distraction, I haven't seen anything from the Canucks side of things to make it seem that way. All I've seen are things blown out of proportion from posters here and social media. I get it would be ideal to move on from him, but there just seems to be so much unnecessary anger and outrage over what seems so little over the actual reports that are out there. -
[Report] Vegas looking to trade Nikita Gusev
theo5789 replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Not dressing for the playoffs is understandable IMO. New guy coming into the system here, probably with a bit of a language barrier, so it would be a bit of a shock to see him get into the meaningful games just like that. Vegas is obviously playing the cap issues as a problem to try and get him on a lower deal. Will be interesting how it plays out as it looks like Gusev wants to give it a go and more so now seeing Panarin cash in. -
[Report] Vegas looking to trade Nikita Gusev
theo5789 replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I would hope that effectively ruins their rep against all Russian players then. The guy came over and is still wanting to be here and give it a shot and they're holding him back. Maybe Gusev needs to come out and demand a trade if this is the game they're playing only to further devalue his worth in a trade. The longer it drags out, the worse it'll look on Vegas. -
[Signing] Lightning sign Luke Schenn
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Maybe Tampa is offering ice time too since they need cheap depth. We would be offering him a #7 spot if he replaces Fantenberg. Why would we offer a million for a #7 guy? 700k goes further I'm Tampa than here and he's on a contender, which maybe he feels like he should try and go for a Cup after seeing his brother win one. Honestly this is nothing worth losing sleep over and certainly not head shaking worthy. Schenn was AHL fodder only months ago. -

[Proposal] UFA Deryk Engelland
theo5789 replied to garthsbutcher's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm not sure he has much desire to leave Vegas. I believe he was living in Vegas before the team even existed, so he was one of the guys they brought out during the media days after the expansion draft. He's probably simply waiting for Vegas to sort things out to see if there's room for him and if not, then maybe he retires and works for their organization in some way. With that said, Biega is a #8 that doesn't complain about his role and plays full out when called upon. You can tell he's a great team guy with how his teammates joke about and with him during little tidbit interviews. Not sure if we are really need an "upgrade" there. If we do move Tanev and Hutton does sign elsewhere, there are still plenty of fill in options through UFA currently and if not, I'm comfortable with Fantenberg to start the year and giving guys like Sautner, Brisebois and eventually OJ some opportunity. We may see Tryamkin and/or Rathbone join the team later in the season too, so there may not be a huge need to fill/upgrade such a low role at this point. -
Lee Sweatt was a dman I believe. Burrows had the other assist on the play.

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
theo5789 replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
He made a comment about not seeing things eye to eye 100% of the time about Green. When did he throw the GM and teammates under the bus for his play? Do you agree with everything you boss/superior decides? He shouldn't have said it to the media and there's no denying that, but I think this is getting blown way out of proportion. Remember the Ottawa's Uber scandal? Duchene got a 8 million dollar a season contract. Chabot is doing just fine and still in Ottawa. And I believe several other players were involved trashing the coaching in a much worse way and they're not being run out of the league altogether and being suggested they shouldn't be around other players or even teammates anymore. The only problem for Loui is that he isn't worth a 6 million dollar contract and he's got 3 years more on it. I bet if LE was on another team and this similar thing happened, many would be suggesting we take him on for a sweetener which is simply something we don't want to pay. There's no need to dump on LE beyond that. -
[Report] Vegas looking to trade Nikita Gusev
theo5789 replied to Canucks_fo_life's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If they honestly believe he has that potential, why would they be lowballing him? They're fearing he will be a busy at 4 million but want to trade him for potential Panarin quality? Gusev likely just goes back to the KHL because there's too much risk of that happening for whichever team that takes him on and he doesn't like the destination then he can bolt. They should be glad if a team offers a 5th rounder. I wouldn't even consider him value for a cap dump because then he adds a 4 million dollar price tag (so if combined with say the Clarkson LTIR, then you're adding over 9 million in cap) and there is no certainty he makes it in the NHL. If he does blossom on a new team, then that's a bonus for whichever team that takes the gamble. -
Just another Sedin assisted goal.

[Signing] Blue Jackets sign Gustav Nyquist
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
You don't want to put yourself in a position where teams can take advantage of you. We would have to be adding high picks for teams to take cap off us and I'm sure Benning would be criticised for using picks in such a way. -
