If some Canuck "fans" had it their way, this is how our coaching staff/GM would fare.
-
Not sure about that, but we own his rights, so that would have to count for something. I would think the waiver process might be for "free agents". Curious to find out if it is needed though.

If Lockwood's intention is still fully to join us when his season is done next year (I know he said it is, but it wouldn't be the first time someone has said something and done something different and maybe a team like Detroit shows interest), then I fully agree with the decision to go back for another season. With his playing style and possible injury concerns, it makes sense to complete his degree for life after hockey if necessary. It also gives him more time to strengthen up and hopefully him and Quinn are buddies and Quinn can give him some pointers about the NHL level.

Bo's skating coach could do wonders as well.

The new black/blue or gold/white dress video?

Hopefully before the TDL for a nice added boost to our playoff push next year!

[Speculation] Adam Fox testing UFA status next summer.
theo5789 replied to Mathew Barzal's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well if the loophole from tampering is to use the media, then maybe it's time to utilize the media to our advantage. Only problem is that our media will cry to the NHL saying we are tampering rather than help us. The issue with the way Brooksie worded his "speculation" is that he made it seem that NYR was interested for sure rather making it known it's his speculation. I expect the league to look into it to either get Brooksie to do proper reporting or actually charge for tampering if the team expressed it to him to "pass on the message". -

Tricky situation if it's not tampering since NCAA players can hit UFA right after college. What's stopping a team from saying they're interested in any drafted NCAA player which may pique their interest in having the choice of which team to join? Personally I would have to put this into the tampering category otherwise it can open up a can of worms. Remember when Butcher and Kerfoot weren't going to sign for their respective teams and then were traded for each other? Perhaps a similar deal can be made for Fox and someone in the NYR system. -
If you've followed my posts, I've clearly mentioned that Benning has made mistakes just like any other GM. However I find his mistakes to be minimal and the overall picture is this team has (much) improved compared to the hand he had recieved upon arrival. I've never gone so far to suggest Benning is a trading genius unlike the counterpart suggesting he is terrible at it and should be fired or demoted from his position for it which is far more extreme. To break down the examples you have brought up, well for the Spooner deal, yes Gagner turned out to be a mistake. Gagner was then waived and sent to another farm team and therefore did not hurt our team in any way except for some money from Aquilini. Benning made a hockey trade with Edmonton as both teams wanted to part with their unused players and hoping for a shakeup and both teams have called up their respective players to give them a shot. Gagner is not much improved from last season and Spooner hasn't amounted to much in his time either. At the end of the day, Spooner was acquired for a guy that we didn't spend any "assets" for and at worst will be a boost for our farm team next season and be depth and only under contract for one more year (if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, we actually save 50k+ for Aquilini as well). The Nilsson deal was also a hockey trade. Nilsson wasn't performing well for us, so it made sense to give Demko development time anyway even if there were growing pains as the result wasn't going to much different than keeping Nilsson. Ottawa needed a NHL goalie and we gained the much coveted draft pick (which we may not have gotten had we waited until the TDL) from a free asset no less. We took back Pyatt to offset some salary and they took on Archibald to regain back their depth from losing Pyatt. We acquired McKenna as well to be our Utica goaltending until he got claimed on waivers. We ended up moving a 7th rounder for Manzanec to mitigate any more confidence shot for DiPietro and help stabilize our goaltending nightmare at the time. So we lost a 7th, but gained a 6th, so it can be seen as us moving up a round from all of this rather than gaining a pick. http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_GM/Jim_Benning/280/2 Sweeten every deal with picks? What history are you looking at? In the overall picture, we have made 34 picks out of a total of 35 picks had we kept all of our picks from Benning's tenure. We traded some, but we had added some as well and we have 9 draft picks in this coming draft unless we package to trade up or make other moves. The worst deals I would say he has made are the Forsling one, the Kassian-Prust ones and the Vey deal. But even with those, the overall picture would suggest Benning can make decent deals and there are far more good ones that favour us or at least made sense to both sides. We have one of the best prospect pools in the league compared to what we had before Benning arrived, so I think we are doing just fine despite "sweetening" whatever deals that needed it. How's that narrative?
-
nar·ra·tive /ˈnerədiv/ noun 1. a spoken or written account of connected events; a story. There are posters that point out only the bad deals/signings/etc to point out the errors and call him Dim Jim or whatever and suggest he should be fired. Their "account of connected events" or their "narrative" is incorrect IMO because it ignores important aspects of what has really happened. It is a "tale" or "story" when the complete picture is overlooked. You may not like the terminology and that's fine, but you know what message I'm trying to portray, so do you disagree with my statement? Of course he will be held accountable for his decisions as all GMs are, but it would appear that he is very capable of making deals (eg hockey trades) based on his history, so I don't see this being an issue. Being good at trades doesn't have to mean ripping off the other team. I believe Doug MacLean a while back talked about how those types of deals and GMs with that mentality rarely exist now and it is more about finding what's right for both sides these days. A prime example right here is that we were looking for a top 6 LW and may have found one in Pearson and Pittsburgh needed some grit in their back end for the playoffs. The poster who I had responded to mentioned that we also brought in Schenn who has replaced some of what Gudbranson provided for us, so overall, it would appear that we have come out on top in the grand scheme of things.

[GDT] Around the NHL | March/April (31-06) 2019

This is where Binnington enters the Calder conversation. The question is has he played enough games to earn him the win. I would say no, but hopefully Pettersson has a good final couple of games to shut the door here (especially in game 82 if Binnington isn't sat). -
What Guaranteed Draft Position? With Simulators, Current #8
theo5789 replied to TheGuardian_'s topic in Canucks Talk
And yet the two Eastern teams beat those odds while the West didn't. 7 of 9 teams won the lottery picks from the East which includes all 1st overalls. It could very well be coincidence, but I guess the West is due for a 1st overall given the "randomness" of the lottery system although the best odds may fall to Eastern teams as they seem to be tanking harder than the West. -

I specifically said I don't know if there's a conspiracy and just that there have been an unusual trend and this system is suppose to "prevent" tanking. Yet we are seeing the West remain competitive this year to the end of the year and the East plummeting. It will interesting to see how it plays out this year with the bottom team being an Eastern team, but the picked being owned by a Western team, then followed by the 2nd lowest team being a Western team. Although NJ and Buffalo are falling fast (last two 1st overall winners) and LA still putting up some wins and could easily surpass them. -

The Oilers won their picks before the latest draft lottery system which started in 2016 (The Maple Leafs 1st overall year). I'm not saying there is shady practices, but there are odd trends and they didn't cover all their bases in making it completely transparent. -

Are those not the lowest ranked Eastern teams? Colorado and Vancouver were shafted in 2017 dropping 3 spots each while NJ jumped to the top spot (lowest Eastern team) and Philly made a huge leap. Luckily for us, we came out with likely the best player of the draft anyway. -

The one thing that can be more transparent is that they do a set of numbers, but those numbers are "randomly" assigned to teams. We do not see this list, so really whatever combination of numbers could be given to whichever "winning" team they chose. It wouldn't be the first time a private accounting firm has done some shady practices and the representatives are not going to hurt their franchises and the league by speaking out about it. Edmonton wasted so many 1st overalls and ever since this lottery system came into place, the lowest Eastern team has won the lottery even when the best odds should've been Western teams. And if I were to continue the conspiracy theories, all the Western teams this year have been trying more this year while the Eastern teams seem to be "tanking" more noticeably. I made a post in another thread and I believe that 7 of the last 9 lottery winning picks from when this system has begun have gone out East, which includes all of the 1st overalls. So I don't know if I believe there's a conspiracy, but there are some unusual trends. -

Always take BPA (according to their own scouting which may not necessarily agree with what TSN or whoever feeds us). Then you trade from a position of strength and centers are a valued position, plus can be converted to wing much more easily. I'd be pretty happy if Turcotte fell to a 9 or 10 pick, but I don't think it'll be likely. -
Interesting that they stopped at 37. I think Woo will be at least topping that 2nd round or even getting in the 1st round himself as Madden continues to climb.

First year (2016) with this draft lottery system the top 3 picks were Toronto, Winnipeg and Columbus. The teams that finished at the bottom were Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver. 2017 top 3 picks were New Jersey, Philadelphia, Dallas. Bottom 3 teams were Colorado, Vancouver, New Jersey. 2018 top 3 picks were Buffalo, Carolina, Montreal. Bottom 3 teams were Buffalo, Ottawa, Arizona. Now I know the draft lottery system is suppose to be "random", but the trend for these past 3 seasons is that the lowest Eastern team got 1st overall. All of the bottom 3 Western teams dropped out of the lottery slots. 7 of 9 lottery slots were won by Eastern teams. This year aside from LA, most teams are still trying and looking to remain competitive pretty much until the end. While in the East, there's a pretty big group that looks to have hit a wall and appear to be "tanking". I'm going to "predict" the draft results to be Detroit, NYR, Chicago with the standings as the way they are now. -

I never said he wouldn't be better (offensively on paper) than the wingers that we have. I've just said that he's not a big enough improvement compared to what he may command as a UFA joining a currently non-contender. I guess we will see if he continues or at least keeps his progress rather than playing for a contract year. Pearson and Baertschi are basically 40-50 point guys and I still believe Leivo is better than his numbers indicate. Ryan Spooner has shown he's also capable of 40-50 points. Roussel was on pace for 40 points despite being a "bottom 6" guy. Dzingel is on pace for 60 points. 10-20 point increase (playing with another player on a contract year who's also having a career season and played with another winger in Ottawa also on a contract year having a career season), but there's going to be the added cost and term. It's really going to come down to what his asking price will be. Either he's looking for a pay day or takes a reasonable deal with a current contender. -

As mentioned Vesey had attended all camps and I believe Fox had attended all of Calgary's camps up to him being traded. So it's hard to say just by attending camps that they are set. Rathbone seems like a good character guy which is an important criteria for Benning when drafting. Hopefully Rathbone gets Fox to sign here rather than Fox putting ideas into Rathbone's head to join him or simply to go to UFA and pick your own destination. -
