  1. Don't know for sure, but based on the Beanpot game, it looked like Fox and Walsh are their go-to offensive guys. Rathbone does get some 2nd unit PP time, but he's not utilized in the more offensive situations it seems, whether that's because that's not his game or he's being suppressed is another question. From what I saw though, I was pleasantly surprised at how he was defensively. Perhaps this is another reason why he's given a different role than the offensive guys. When partnered with Fox, he played the safe defender and let Fox do his thing. I'd have to see more, but I liked what I saw with the likelihood of him being a potential bottom pairing dman at the NHL level with the possibility of being a 2nd pairing guy with more development.
  2. My bad on the WC/WJC confusion. With that said, Canada that year rode a goaltending trio of Chad Johnson/Calvin Pickard/Eric Comrie. They had a defense that included Mike Matheson and a bunch of decent top 4 guys, but not really any top pairing guys. So while the forwards look better for Canada on paper, the offset on defense and goaltending makes a huge difference. I'm not arguing whether Nylander is a decent player or has attributes that could be successful for us, but depending on the price we have to pay on top of taking on what I believe to be an overpaid contract, I just don't see how it could benefit us long term. We would have to bank on Nylander not only bouncing back, but exceeding his previous form. We have likely given Toronto plenty of opportunities to upgrade their team over the years by selling them our vets for futures, but they've continually tried to lowball us. Who knows how the new management will be, but I don't care for helping them get out of their situation and especially for a gamble that could cripple our long term cap space and rebuild.
  3. Teams have to look at these two months and have to wonder if he's one of those guys that coast once they get the big contract. We have seen that time and time again. Just as it's too early to gauge whether his contract is worth it, looking at one 3 point night doesn't change anything either (Eriksson had a 3 point night not long ago too). Eriksson was/is signed during a time when the cap space didn't matter, so even though he hasn't panned out as expected, it isn't costly. If Nylander doesn't produce, he's eating up prime cap space when we may need it most. You would hope that Nylander surpasses Virtanen offensively, but one guy makes 6.9 a year (10 million or something this season) vs 1.25 a year and play completely different roles for their teams.
  4. There are many players who've had very impressive WJC showings only to have mediocre careers in the NHL (and of course some that do proceed to have very good careers), so I don't reflect back to that to determine how I feel about them today. With that said, I'm not saying Nylander will remain on his 30 point pace and he's surely to bounce back, but even at a 60 point pace, his 6.9 million aav is still bloated IMO. He's only going to have less talent to work with here and I personally don't think he's the type that can help carry the offense, but more of a supporting player. To pay what Toronto likely wants for him and to eat that salary long term while solving Toronto's problem, that doesn't sit well with me. Only way I would consider Nylander is to take him on as a negative value player and hope he blossoms into a PPG guy. I find that it's more of a Bobby Ryan situation where Ryan isn't that bad of a player, just way overpaid. Look at the criticism of Eriksson here who is a fine player in his role, but again just overpaid. For me Nylander might be a decent player, but just not worth his contract.
  5. Perhaps I'm being overly harsh, and it is certainly too early in his contract to decide whether it's worth it or not. However, at this point, I wouldn't pay to acquire him (especially what they think he's worth). I also certainly would not want to help them get out of their cap situation which is especially where the "negative value" lies. If they retain cap down to a 5.5 million aav (which they may or may not be able to afford), then he would be closer to his actual value if he regains his 60 point form and would put him back into the positive territory that may net a decent return for them.
  6. So to replace a guy that we had signed during our rebuild years, therefore has little to no effect to us long term, the solution is to bring in an even more expensive player signed long term (in what should soon be our contention years) that currently has 7 points in 21 games playing with much better offensive players than we have. Even his 60 point seasons don't scream elite to me. I would take Nylander from them if they give us their next 10 1st round picks (the Luke Schenn special).
  7. Not a chance in hell if I was Winnipeg. I rather go on a playoff run with Myers and have him walk in free agency than to have that nightmare in Gardiner perhaps knocking them out early.
  8. There are still some Chiarellis here under the same circumstances though.
  9. Generally the best in a position may get picked higher than projected (see Kotkaniemi). I think he will get picked top 10 regardless of what happens as long as he's the clear cut best dman in the draft.
  10. And that's fine. If we need to protect him in the expansion then so be it, but at least he finished out the year with his team that he committed to for the year.
  11. I haven't heard the rumours, but I hope it's not true. He should at least finish the year with his college team, whether they end their season early or not. You want a guy that will want to finish things out rather than jump ship on the team. As excited as I am to see Hughes, I hope he finishes out the season the best he can and hopefully with some college accolades. There's also the whole small possibility that he doesn't turn pro this season so we don't have to protect him in the expansion.
  12. I think a captain should also have a lot of community involvement as well. I would like to see Bo embrace the city a bit more with more community events, but I do think he's currently best suited for the role. It wouldn't shock me if Gudbranson is considered as an option as it looks like he's good with media and has been involved with the city, but unfortunately his play isn't quite up to the standards set with previous captains, but maybe that is something different that we haven't had. He is a guy that will stand up for his teammates though and likely respected amongst his peers. We have seen lesser captains, but I can certainly tell already that the fanbase will not accept this idea. We have seen teams that have young cores go with guys like Justin Williams, Nick Foligno, Derek Mackenzie and Andy Greene. Although this might make it more plausible that someone like Edler could get it for a couple of seasons until a young guy steps up.
  13. Pettersson can do all of that with or without the C on his jersey. Captaincy should not be determined by stats and on ice play as there is much more to the captaincy then that.
  14. Tired, definitely tired. He had to carry the team on his back at center when Sutter and Beagle were both out and we have played the most games in the league. He's literally been on the ice more than any other Canuck this season (one of the few who has actually played the full season so far).
  15. I think the main thing about a captain is dealing with media and officials. Every year we hear about leadership beyond the players with letters, so captaincy doesn't mean a whole lot in the room specifically anyway. With that said, this is why I would choose Bo, simply because of his calmer demeanour that may bode well with officials and his indifferent attitude towards the media is what is needed to not give them what they're craving, which is to blow up any little thing they can grasp. I think it's funny how Pettersson handles the media, but it's what the media preys on. Look at how they dealt with the "death stare" which was meant to demonstrate what a dumb question that was asked, but the media turned it into a joke and are likely trying to find ways to trigger him again now. This is like choosing Linden or Bure to be captain and I think the decision should be an easy one.
  16. Things certainly get tricky when an owner gets too involved. I think it's still too early to judge whether or not Carolina is in a path of derailment just yet from this trade alone. Some players need a change of scenery to take their game to another level which Lindholm has shown. Fox could come as advertised and even up the deal a bit more in the long term. Francis does deserve another shot though. Hopefully a team like the Oilers don't pick him up though.
  17. No one is comparing Ferland and Lindholm as direct comparisons for players. Ferland showed he was capable of putting up 40+ points, so it may have seemed like a wash if Lindholm remained a 40-45 point player for them while Ferland added a physical element as well. Ferland started out the year very well, but is still on pace to match his career high in points in slightly less games. Well there's always going to be that debate of physical hockey vs skilled, much like advanced stats vs eye test. Carolina is on the losing end right now of the trade, but there's still half a season and their goal is to make the playoffs, which they are not out of just yet. The Fox and Ferland situations will certainly add to how this trade plays out.
  18. I don't disagree with this at all, just trying to look at it from their perspective. To be fair, a lot of fan reaction here to us finishing at the bottom for several years and demanding wholesale changes through management and what not is basically demonstrated by what has happened here in Carolina. A lot of fans here are starting to be "won back"/back on the bandwagon somewhat because we stayed the course while it looks like Carolina tried for a quick jump back. The reason I mentioned stagnant is simply from their standings where 3 years ago, they finished 18th in the league and then dropped to 21st and 21st again last season. They were rebuilding and should have kept developing their players, but they chose to "shake things up" and see what happens while spending a bit less this year than paying (investing) the guys their contract demands. There's still half a season left though and Carolina are still in the thick of things and maybe simply making the playoffs this year will be enough for them to justify their move.
  19. I agree, but it still sheds some salary that Aquilini has to pay this year (since he's throwing money away to Gagner). Has to count for something and the fact that we got a minor asset out of it as well has to be an added bonus.
  20. I'd still like to sign a legit AHL goalie (maybe extend McKenna if he looks good) to split the games at least for next season. DiPietro doesn't need to be thrown to the wolves that quickly. Demko is finally getting an opportunity at 23 at the NHL level, so DiPietro should take some time before being ready for big minutes at the next level.
  21. Have to wonder if this opens up the possibility of trying to move Schaller or even Granlund (less likely) and Pyatt seems capable of filling this role.
