Tryamkin would be interesting, but he seems to like to join the rush at times as well (sometimes leading the rush too). I think we need a true stay at home dman for a guy like Hughes and I'm picturing Gudbranson if he can stay healthy. He would kind of be like the Methot to Karlsson. I also think Woo might look good with Juolevi as well that would make for a great shutdown dman pair that can put up points as well.

I would say Dahlin could probably do most of what Hughes can do, but add in the size, a shot, and ready defensive play at 18 years old. Love the Hughes pick, but I would take Dahlin 10/10 times if we got the chance.

The Canucks management must've seen that hit and were like "yeah, we will take Madden instead"

I haven't seen all of the Hughes highlight packages, but is there footage of him doing this? It's very hard to make the turn and catch up to someone after being flat-footed from a bad giveaway leading to a breakaway no matter how good of a skater you are. Or say if he's at the end of a shift or something (eg see Virtanen vs McDavid). There are many scenarios where he likely can't make up for a costly risk.

The reality is not all will pan out. But hopefully we continue to draft well and fill those gaps left by those who don't make it. However sometimes someone unexpected comes out of the shadows and suddenly boosts the depth eg maybe someone like Zhukenov decides to return and is better than expected.
-
Hopefully he pulls a Werenski and finishes out the year with Utica on a playoff run then joins the Canucks the following season.
-
If any other dman drafted after Hughes makes the NHL, then we will apparently have drafted the wrong dman. This is good news IMO, Pettersson for Calder this season and Hughes for next season!
-
I'm hoping he will be one of those guys other fanbases talk about how great dmen can be found in the 2nd round (eg Shea Weber, Duncan Keith, etc). It's about time this luck comes to us.

2018-19 Utica Comets Thread

If only we didn't get the "mini" version of Ansel... -
Would you have said Sam Reinhart or Leon Draisaitl would've been miles ahead of McDavid when he was drafted because they had an extra year of development? Sometimes some players are just better than other regardless of age or length of development time. With that said, who cares what anyone says or ranks our prospects. It's like the "concensus" draft rankings every year, it's never how the draft goes and almost never right about who becomes the better player in the end for the most part. There seems to be some insecurity whenever our players/prospects aren't deemed the best. Let our guys prove them wrong or maybe they're simply not wrong.

21 year old Brock Boeser talking about the youth like a seasoned veteran.

I imagine the plan (if it goes down this route) is to get him to play in college for another year and then sign him at the end of the year and get to play the few games at the end of the season which therefore burns a year of his ELC anyway. This seems to be the norm in bringing in college players. There is a small chance he pulls a Werenski and signs an AHL contract after the college season which would save them that first year of ELC. So the question is more to do with whether he will develop better in college or Utica/Vancouver. I can see the concern in bringing him into the NHL too early, but he offers something we do not have and the way his father has brought him up, he doesn't seem to be the type that will take shortcuts and develop bad habits.

Bureau switched to #96 for like one season and was injured for most of it and went back to #10. His legacy will always be with #10. It wasn't retired so Letowski used it. Burrows is a great guy and was great for us, but there is no disrespect in one of your future superstars using the number. Would you prefer in about 5 years that some nobody plug takes number 14 instead? #14 is not being retired, so if Pettersson wants it, then I'm fine with it and I'm sure Burrows will be fine with it as well.
-
Just waiting for someone to suggest that Tkachuk and Hughes are friends and will play out their college years and then sign with whatever team of their choosing.
-
If I were Burrows though, I'd think it would be an honour that the next great thing to join the Canucks would want to wear my number. Burrows is not getting his number retired, so might as well have a potential star player wear it than some plug not doing it justice.
-
Remember when Trevor Letowski wore #10? Unless it's in the rafters, any number is fair game.
-
Well let's hope this is the case, but let's see how he looks in preseason first. There are very few "generational" players that aren't taken 1st overall.
-
If Pettersson is dominating the AHL, he gets called up sooner than later and should stick with the big club. This is what happened to Kucherov and he has taken off. If Pettersson is in the AHL for the full year, then he likely isn't too dominant. I agree with your sentiment that we need to build a strong AHL team as a legitimate farm system to feed the big club, but it's hard to see someone like Pettersson stay there too long when he has already dominated a men's league in Sweden. I won't be disappointed if he starts the year in the AHL and even get a fair share of games, but he's the most likely player to transition early and it'll likely be as a winger to Sutter, who is a good support veteran for him to get into the NHL game (not a long term solution). It'll be interesting to see how long it'll take for Pettersson to eventually get to center, but Sutter has shown that he can play wing as well, so it could be a good tandem to get Pettersson some starts there at the NHL level.
-
Why does Pettersson need a skilled center? Pettersson is and will be the skilled guy on the line. He's not like Boeser who is more of a finisher and would benefit from a good playmaker. A guy like Sutter could handle the minutes and win possession for the line being good a draws. He would be a good forechecker while being defensively responsible if Pettersson is caught making any rookie mistakes. Put a decent offensive player on the other wing (Baertschi, Leipsic and maybe even Eriksson) and there could be some chemistry. Maybe Pettersson could shock back Eriksson's offense to life.
-
He would play with Boeser on the top unit PP. I think we would be more of a threat having them on separate lines unless we need to load up late in a game. Until Pettersson can show a strong two way game at center in the NHL level, the Pettersson-Boeser full time duo can wait a bit longer. Although I would be curious how that pair would fare with a Roussel flanking their wing.
-
I was just thinking, if Pettersson and Hughes make the team and they both have amazing years, has any team had two rookies nominated for the Calder in a single season?
-
While I agree with mostly what you're saying, at the end of the day, I would like Quinn to be a defenseman as well considering that is his position. If he is expected to be the so-called #1 dman and log possibly 25+ mins, then he certainly will need that aspect and be quite effective at it. This is the main reason why Jordan Subban could not make it.
-
The point of the draft is to find NHLers regardless of where they play in the lineup. A 3rd round pick as a bottom 6 player, that's perfectly fine. Wise may be more offensively talented, but he could be one of those players that just aren't good enough to crack a top 6 and don't have the attributes to play bottom 6, eg Linden Vey, Kyle Wellwood, etc.
-
And looks like he wore #2 for team USA. I don't think he's completely tied down to the #6.
