Have been getting inquiries on Janne Kuokkanen, while we aren't looking to move on from him, we are willing to listen to offers on this cheap top 6 forward with two years of term left. We may move him if a deal makes sense for us.

Must've been a quota for how many letters to put on the back of a jersey.

Stankoven, Pastujov, Koivunen and maybe Tuomaala have decent star potential as well. Stromgren is a safer pick with size. Morrow and Svozil are solid defensive picks while Heimosalmi could be a swing for the fences type pick as well. But yes right now, my top choice if available is Chibrikov.

[Report] Khaira not being qualified
theo5789 replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Pettersson also had a concussion before. Do we avoid him as well? Concussions are complicated, some players can come back from them just fine and still play at a high level. Khaira came back and played in their short lived playoffs. Not sure how he fared in those games or if there are still lingering issues, but he played his regular minutes it seems and led the team in hits in the playoffs. If it's a short term deal that doesn't take up much cap space, I'm sure we can take that risk. Worst case is they go on LTIR and we can still utilize the cap space still. Best case is we get a heavy 4th liner that can PK and has the local roots, plus can take faceoffs (even if not spectacular at it). -
This feels like when someone goes to the back of the book to look for the answer.

(Rumour) Rangers to trade for Giordano after ED
theo5789 replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They were in the "free pile" because every team had to make a protected/exposed list. There's a limited number of players they can actually protect and had to make decisions. When I say "calculated risks", it means that they feel that they should be safe due to their contracts "protecting" them, but as you mentioned, they would be okay with the player being taken to create cap flexibility. So we are talking about similar things here, but I just don't agree that teams actually want to lose some of these players. Johansen would absolutely get picked up if put on waivers, Duchene probably would slip through as I didn't realize how much he has dropped off last season. There are a few teams that have been looking for top line centerman (eg Minnesota, Columbus, etc). Nashville could've gone the 7 forward protection route, but chose to protect their dmen instead. It was a calculated risk. Could they have benefitted from the cap space? Sure, but I doubt they were hoping to lose one of their top 2 centermen and they knew their high salaries would be problematic for Seattle who were quite clear that they weren't taking on cap without a cost. Skinner would pass through waivers easily. Not part of this conversation as I said earlier as he's basically in the boat of us exposing Eriksson. The cap climate is exactly why teams were willing to take the gambles and risk (eg Price even willing to waive his NMC to be exposed). Now am I saying those players are all worth their cap hits? Not at all, but that's exactly the point in why it was calculated risks to leave them exposed and surely management explained this to these players as opposed to suggesting they don't want them anymore. They probably felt safer leaving them exposed instead of having a player they didn't want exposed to be instead. Giordano was a calculated risk as well for Calgary as they wanted to protect other as they probably hoped that they wouldn't want an aging player. But it didn't work out for them likely because he only has one year left on his deal and could be a potential flip at the TDL, unlike other players with term. I'm not saying all big salaries exposed were calculated moves, but several teams did take advantage of it. So along with teams learning from the first go around with expansion with Vegas, they had the cap climate to benefit them as well, which is what I'm suggesting as to why Vegas came out on top more heavily than Seattle did in terms of draft picks (which is what I was originally responding to I believe). -

And when I say teams were gambling on the big contracts, I certainly wasn't saying every big contract. I certainly wouldn't include Subban and Skinner in this conversation. Johansen and Duchene are a prime example of it though. Now I understand your point in making them "expendable", but it's not that they want to lose one of their top 2 centermen, but it's because they knew they were high salaried/cap players, so they took the gamble by protecting their dmen. It's not like in this case or others I have mentioned that they will go and start putting them on waivers or something and hope some team picks them up for free, these were calculated moves for expansion reasons, ones where teams probably have discussed with said players as to why they're being exposed other than saying "hey we don't need you anymore". Now could it also be motivation for some as well, maybe. But I think it's pretty clear on which players were of real note as opposed to some bad contracts. Seattle made it clear that they were putting a premium on taking on cap/salary, so it kind of revealed their hand that they weren't really interested in doing so right off the bat unless it made sense for them long term. -

So now the players weren't taken and were deemed expendable? An awkward situation for these teams to put their players in, so I doubt it. Price expendable? Voracek expendable? Giordano expendable? Etc. They knew these players were expensive and Seattle would have to decide if it was worth taking up that cap space and using up that money all in the first season. Seattle was asking for 1sts to take on cap. Teams knew they didn't want to take on big cap for nothing. I don't think teams wanted to lose guys like Price, etc, but they took a gamble that Seattle wouldn't take them due to their salaries/cap and they didn't, except Giordano. -

Vegas had the benefit of going first. Teams were more cautious this time around and played games of chicken exposing high priced superstars. -
