[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
theo5789 replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Fair enough, but the point is I would be okay adding Juolevi in a trade for Ristolainen. I think it would be much more imposing to have Ristolainen and Myers in the same defense group especially come playoff time. Plus Myers is proven. Juolevi may be cheaper, but unless he can find the next level to his game soon, he may not provide much long term value anyway. I'm willing to risk that potential because we have someone like Rathbone in the system (plus Utunen, Jurmo, and Truscott all as LD prospect depth with potential). -

The way I see it is that if we do acquire Ristolainen, we would have to expose Juolevi. We could choose to expose Myers instead, but then we could lose an RD when that is the area we are trying to fill. So instead of potentially losing Juolevi, we could leverage him into this deal. Now I agree Rathbone is more on the offensive side of things, but I think he can handle the defensive side at least better than Hughes can. The main thing for Rathbone is he's expansion exempt. But I would give him a year in Abbotsford (plus a few call-ups) to get big minutes in all areas and to hopefully gain some size. Rathbone long term could replace what Schmidt provides IMO with the right development. OJ would currently fill a bottom pair role if he's up to the task, but we could have a stop gap of say Edler (or another cheap UFA signing that can PK well) to fill the gap. I like OJ, but if we can bring in someone like Ristolainen, I am fine parting ways with OJ to make it work. If Buffalo wants Rathbone instead because of the expansion exemption, then that will change the value. -
[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen

He wasn't ready for the NHL yet. His agent tried to force his hand and suggest a trade may be of best interest. It may have been a bluff, Benning called them out on it and traded him. He expected to be in the NHL, but stuck in the lower level in Sweden. Wish him the best and hope he can make a career for himself, but the drive doesn't seem to be there despite how talented he is. -
[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast

Since we are doing trade proposals, I'd consider the following. #40 pick this year, unprotected 2022 1st, Juolevi, Lind and Eriksson for Reinhart and Ristolainen. Or #9, 2022 2nd, Juolevi, Lind and Eriksson for Reinhart and Ristolainen. Or personally I would do, #9, Juolevi, Lind, and Eriksson for Ristolainen and Buf 2021 2nd (#32?). I think Juolevi and Lind are "expendable" given their expansion eligibility. Rathbone could "replace" Juolevi in the depth chart and we would protect Schmidt, Myers and Risto while Hughes is exempt which sets our top 4 dmen. Re-sign Edler and Hamonic to fill out the defense. Lind can be replaced with Podkolzin and would further be expendable if we acquire Reinhart. Personally I could do without the extra cap on wing with Reinhart and rather focus on the defense which is why I wouldn't even target him. We would lose the #9, but still gain a solid pick at #32. -

There is no sudden on switch whenever we decide we are ready to go for it. Just ask Buffalo and Edmonton. Look at even Toronto and many others. I understand not needing to go "all in" this coming season, but the playoffs is always the goal. The players and management want it. The players and management need it for experience. -
[Rumour] Devils interested in Rasmus Ristolainen
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Actually his last couple of seasons he has improved defensively significantly with Krueger. I think with the right coach and motivation (getting out of the hell hole in Buffalo) would get any "bad habits" out of him. -
[Rumour] Devils interested in Rasmus Ristolainen
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
They are similar dmen. However Ristolainen IMO is a step above Graves. Both are similar size, but Risto uses is more averaging about 200 hits for years now. Graves had 77 this past season. So if Graves adds toughness, so does Ristolainen and I would say more so. They are less than a year apart in age. Ristolainen actually averaged 22 minutes a night last season while Graves had 19. Both are top PK guys, but Risto adds the offense. Now of course if Graves could be had for as low as a 2nd round pick, value-wise, it makes more sense to acquire him. But we don't know the cost for either at this point. Perhaps Ristolainen won't cost as much, or if the #9 is involved, then perhaps we can unload a cap dump as well. So with that said, there's also the issue of RHD vs LHD. Ristolainen fills much more of a need on RD whereas Graves is a LD. Ristolainen is likely a top pair dman, whereas Graves is more a top 4 dman. So have to look at the value of acquiring either accordingly. -
We are looking for players with that killer instinct to win games.

[Rumour] Devils interested in Rasmus Ristolainen
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I agree, but I also feel like he could probably handle the minutes with a better support system around him. Namely Demko will be better than any goalie he's had behind him. But with the dmen I listed, he certainly wouldn't need to play the heavy minutes. Plus it would bump Myers minutes down a bit as well and he seems to benefit from lower minutes. -

Don't disagree, just the point was about Ristolainen. I'd like to keep Edler around and transition Juolevi into the spot. Oleksiak would be a good add, but he will probably require term which would restrict the cheap youth from coming in to balance the overall cap. -

+/- is often an indicator of how bad a team is. Buffalo has been a nightmare and he's utilized in the top defensive roles. His +/- actually isn't bad when considering his team and role. Would you be opposed to Rasmus Dahlin as well with his team worst -36? Quinn Hughes was -24 last season. Rasmus Ristolainen has been so underrated here for years due to that +/- stat. Seeing the playoff teams with a heavy defense, I would absolutely welcome Risto who puts up solid offensive numbers while playing a physical game (averaging around 200 hits a season). He has much improved his defensive game in the last couple of seasons despite the team around him with the right coaching and motivation. Schmidt - Ristolainen Hughes - Hamonic Edler - Myers Juolevi - Chatfield Rathbone logging big minutes in Abbotsford with Woo. For me that's a playoff built defense especially with Demko backing them up. I much rather have Ristolainen than Reinhart especially with Podkolzin coming in. -
That streak started when he was 24. So there's still time for Petey to get one going. Or we need to get some Vibranium for Petey.
-
He seemed to handle the playoffs just fine. Teams couldn't really shut him down and he had 18 points in 17 games in his first stint. He needs to be stronger on faceoffs, but that's about it. He's a good 200ft player and his "lanky" frame isn't as big of a deal down the middle unlike on wing where he would have to do more board battles. He's up to almost 180lbs, which was Henrik Sedin's weight in the NHL. So for me, just more work on faceoffs. And he's driven to improve in the area. Perhaps someone like Beagle despite being injured could continue to help him along in a Malhotra type capacity.

[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen

But this is kind of my point. A goalie has two spots they can earn. Starter or back-up (plus whatever mish-mash in between, but there are two spots). A forward or dman could be drafted in the top 10, but carve out a career as a 4th liner or 3rd pair dman and hit the 400 game mark and is considered a "success" despite their draft spot asking for more. Now I agree that if you're not good enough to make the NHL, then it doesn't matter. But it's much harsher for a goaltender to make the team or not, whereas forwards and dmen have more leeway. So it may be safer to pick a forward or dman as the likelihood or them being able to carve out a career could be higher. However, if Wallstedt lives up to his potential and is a franchise goaltender and becomes one of the "good picks", he could also have way more value to a team than a top 4 dman or middle 6 forwards. As much risk as there is to drafting a goalie, there is still risk drafting at any position. If the hype is real that Wallstedt is one of the best goaltending prospects in the last decade, it may be worth the risk. For the record, I'm not advocating that we draft Wallstedt, but he could very well be the BPA at #9 and I wouldn't be upset picking him if Benning has him on his list of 9 guys that he likes. Hopefully he's taken before we pick so this becomes moot, but if he were available and we pass on him and he becomes a franchise #1 goaltender down the road (and hopefully not to a rival), then it doesn't look good unless we hit a home run with our pick as well.
-
I suspect though that if you make a similar list for any position, you'll get a similar breakdown. The only advantage for forwards or defense is there is more room for them to crack a roster thus a higher chance to make the NHL in different roles even if they were drafted for those roles.

Except Benning has already publicly stated we are a couple years from making a push. Surely the Columbus group can see that we have had 3 Calder finalists in a row including a winner. Have the goalie of the future locked up. Our goalie coach that they had to help Bob win a Vezina with our team for the next 5 years. I doubt they think we will suddenly be a lotto team a couple of years down the road. They may consider something in the following off season to get more clarity in our direction, but it's way too early to gamble on a "ticket" for Bedard. It's even too early for us to risk that as well as it could mean we failed to make the push and then also lose a lotto pick two years down the road. All that just to gain a pick in the late 1st where the odds of a long term NHL player is quite low. Just doesn't seem to make sense from either side at this point.

We are all Jim Bennings, we are all going to run out of time!

Conway was the glue of the team. He gave up his spot so the cake eater could play. He recruited the knucklepuck kid. Everyone on the team knew his contributions towards their success. Classic case of needing to see the game beyond the stat line Plus Coach Bombay was sleeping with his mom to keep loose and be able to focus on coaching. Charlie didn't let that be a distraction to the team. Ultimate team player!
-
Does whatever it takes to win a championship. That's all that matters!
-
Why would anyone take a cake eater? Conway is heart. He will be what you need come playoff time.
-
Problem is that you're suggesting the motivation for Columbus to make the deal is for "another ticket" for Bedard. If we are not "trading the opportunity" at Bedard, then there goes the motivation for Columbus. If we feel like we will be competitive in two years to make this deal, Columbus will likely realize we are going to make a push that year. Columbus wouldn't bother making that deal.
