Seattle can approach him if they want, he needs to sign the contract still. If Hamonic wants to stay here (or in Western Canada at least), then it's unlikely he will agree to terms with them. Technically Seattle can try to sign Edler as well, but we all know he isn't going anywhere else if he doesn't have to. Hamonic likely already gave up a ton of money from other teams to stay close to home, so I don't think that will change. There would be more risk for Hamonic to re-sign and be kept unprotected if he wants to stay here when he has more control remaining as UFA until past the expansion.

Taking calls for Joonas Korpisalo

Here's the commentary when I opened up discussion about a month ago. He's a bit pricey, but I would consider it as a buy low option as long as we can work out the cap situation. Move Roussel and Virtanen for Domi and a low pick. Podkolzin/Lind could take Roussel's spot as a cheap forward and would pretty much balance out the cap. If we can get them to retain a bit as well and forgo the pick, then even better.

Seems to be a lot of this when it comes to Tryamkin.

These reporters are probably "fans" of the Canucks, much like a lot of "fans" that we see here on CDC.

See above. The kid wants to play in NA. Thank goodness it scared some teams off though so he would land to us.

[Signing] Capitals re-sign Conor Sheary
theo5789 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
How does that compare to someone like Horvat who faced the same competition for the most part or worse cause he had to double shift for faceoff duties at times? And based on that, it looks like his numbers have improved this season despite putting up fewer points and having a better record as a team last season. -

Just curious where you got these numbers. I haven't really gotten into advanced stats, but interested. I would like to see how they are in relation to the competition they face. Just seems odd that someone that was used in a dual shutdown type role and a player that was relied upon to defend close games would be "dreadful defensively". As for PPG, Sheary obviously had a good stretch with Crosby. He's been below that career average pretty much every since. Pearson is more up and down, but he's very recently had a 40+ point season. Pearson paid like a middle 6 forward. Sheary is paid like a bottom 6 forward and their minutes on their respective teams reflect that given the roles they play. We didn't lose a valuable member of the team for nothing. Not sure how that's poor asset management. We moved a player we didn't intend on signing in Benn for a pick and as for Sutter, covid may have played a part here. Just cause you personally felt what Pearson was worth doesn't make that the market. -
[Signing] Capitals re-sign Conor Sheary

The fact is Pearson can play multi-roles. I never said he was a premier PKer. Sheary doesn't at all. Versatility in a player is actually a positive and it's not like Sheary's offense is significantly better (certainly not over their careers thus far) to offset that. There is no doubt that Pearson is the better player amongst the two. Now they worth in ratio to their salaries is a different thing, but they are certainly not equivalent players. We could sign someone like Sheary for cheaper, but that doesn't mean he could replace what Pearson does. As for the empty net numbers, it's joked about as easy points and sure it is. However there's a reason why he's out there late in a close game trying to defend a lead and simply being rewarded for their effort with the empty net points. He had career numbers last year, above his norm, and that was likely due to the inflation with the empty net points. But his salary isn't indicative of the 53 point pace he was having that season, but rather to his norm of 40 points a year along with his defensive and physical acumen. -

Calling Sheary a 0.5 PPG player is a bit of an overstatement. He had 3 points in his last game to bump his numbers up a bit for this season, but prior to that he was on pace for 33 (over 82 games). He's more of a 30-35 point guy (he had a good run with Crosby to up his career numbers). He doesn't PK at all. And this season he has 20 hits in 40 games so far. Plus he's 5'8. Pearson has had more 40+ point seasons. PKs and contributes in a shutdown capacity with Horvat. 40 hits in 33 games so far this season. I'd say Pearson has more of an impact to the overall game than Sheary does. Both players are the same age.- 72 replies

It wasn't a misfire which I've explained. Adding up a bunch of falsities is more a reflection of your opinion than it is on Benning. If all that you hope for does come true, does that change your opinion on Benning? Probably not, because you seem to only dwell on the negatives that fit your agenda instead of focusing on what really happened. The young core that we have built and continue to build is mostly because of what Benning has done. If we do bring in a new GM and he/she has success, then it'll be through the foundation that Benning has built that was not even remotely there when he took over.

What excuses? That's what happened. Like I said, they may have been laughing at the time, but the joke is on them. Adding Hamhuis for their playoff run could've made a difference. They low-balled, didn't get him, and lost in the 2nd round. Then they got him for free in the off-season but never made the playoffs with him. Whoop-di-doo. What do you mean it should've never gotten down to such a low ball offer in the first place? That's out of our control. Dallas was playing two GMs and went with Russell and then tried to get Hamhuis as well for cheaper. Only thing we could control was saying yes or no and we said no. Most pundits have been wrong as well in their assessment of trades (see JT Miller, Tyler Motte, etc), yet people continue to buy into it.

Are we still on this after all these years? We had a deal in place with Dallas, they acquired Russell and switched their offer to us to low ball us. We said no. Dallas got the last laugh? Well they had a window and Hamhuis would've helped them in those playoffs, but they were eliminated I believe in the 2nd round. They didn't make the playoffs after Hamhuis joined them. If they're laughing, then the jokes on them. Because we said no though, the next TDL, we got good value moving Burrows and Hansen (unfortunately the players acquired didn't pan out, but that's the risk with prospects) who both ended their careers shortly after. If we took the low ball offer, then that would've set the tone with us the following TDL surely. Vrbata was a whole different story. Primadonna is all that needs to be said.

The beautiful thing is we can still add a dman from another team and still expose Myers anyway. This way though, we have the insurance if nothing becomes available at the right price and not worry of being potentially down a RD (which we have been trying to fill for years) on top. We don't have to scramble during UFA to find another RD, but still have the flexibility to add should something become available. Myers may be protected because he plays in a position that is in one of our weakest of our prospect pool (which is also a position that in generally around the league considered to be the most difficult to fill) and it's actually strategic to ensure we have NHL bodies there. We are positioning ourselves to not need to give anything of great value to Seattle who we will be facing on a regular basis. If Seattle does take Myers, I wouldn't want him taking liberties on our top young players and Myers has been one the few who actually has been defending them as well. If you fail to see this, then your comment about Benning's ego seems more like a reflection.

I don't know the numbers breakdown, but perhaps saving cap this year could cover some of the bonuses owed so it doesn't carry over to next season which creates a bit of cap for next year that way?
