  1. On one hand yes, on the other, if Benn didn't play much this year, we wouldn't even get a 6th round pick (moar pickz amirite?) So in the end, we get a pick and can now play Juolevi pretty much full time to finish out the year.
  2. First thought that came to mind for me is that maybe they're going to give Lind a good look to finish the year.
  3. If Iafallo is not dealt at today's TDL, he may be available for a playoff boost, so if you're interested, get in contact soon
  4. How can you be so sure? And if he is, it's because a young player has pushed him down, which is only a positive and the cost of the young player will offset his price tag anyway. But if a young player isn't ready to, then we have him ready to go. The NTC is meaningless. It's really just so he can have stability next year with the pandemic going on. He will have trade flexibility afterwards and likely when say a Podkolzin is ready to potentially take on the spot. Not having a season where's he's been a regular 35-40 point player is hardly "declining". Pearson was "declining" when we acquired him and he had a career season with us. Miller was said to be "declining" when we acquired him and we know how that turned out. One season is hardly telling enough of declining.
  5. A couple of those are coming off the books next season. And a couple more have one year left that could be bought out if needed. Pearson doesn't fit into that category at the moment, so that isn't even relevant to this discussion.
  6. You mean flipping an aging core with no prospect pool into one of the most exciting young teams we have seen with several prospects yet to crack the roster? Who's the one ignoring what has happened the past 6 years? Who else would we protect over Pearson anyway? Who mind you is currently a top 6 player that has chemistry offensively and defensively with our captain. We have done very well with our RFA signings and almost every one has coming under what many "experts" have projected. I don't expect this to change. And if this does hold true, we will be fine even with this contract where Pearson took a pay cut from his previous contract.
  7. Is this still a thing? It's for one year, the next is a 7 team no trade list and the final year has no trade restrictions. This NTC really means nothing considering we likely do not have the intention to trade him in the first year of his contract anyway. The NTC is practically meaningless beyond posters looking for anything to cling onto to have a negative spin. Really easy to spot who doesn't even bother to look up the details and just wants to trash this deal regardless.
  8. Probably not, but also not really his choice if Vasili wants to go to NA.
  9. I don't understand how he's "clearly" on a decline. Players have bad seasons and can bounce back. I remember when many were saying JT Miller was "on a decline" when we acquired him. You never know with a new team with the right chemistry. Pearson was also "on a decline" when we acquired him, then he had a career year. If Gusev is willing to sign a cheap contract short term, then it's worth a look. Low risk, potential high reward. That's how buying low works which pays off much more if there is success over only adding players at their peaks. If Gusev is looking for a specific team to make the playoffs, then I get why he wouldn't choose here.
  10. So in other words, he has to play minimum 2 games of their first round exit to make it a 6th round pick.
  11. Sounds like some cap loophole. Perhaps they've agreed to a team that will sign him at a lower cap hit and in the off-season, they make a trade to "complete" the deal. Something to look out for. With that said, I'd take a flyer on him and give him a look if he wanted to come here.
  12. Can still buyout Eriksson/Roussel and/or trade JV if needed. There were decent cheap options in the secondary market last year. We will address it when we can. Pearson we could address now, so we did.
  13. I never said it won't work, I'm saying there's higher risk should the player not pan out as hoped. Buffalo thought they would get a boost with Hall, luckily it was a one year deal unlike their Skinner signing. I'd like to know who your target would be at about the 5-6 million dollar range that we could net that would be a surefire better option than Pearson. Then out of those options, see who may actually consider signing here given they have the freedom to choose to sign anywhere and would we make it enticing enough for them to come here. Then factor in the risk of if they don't pan out, what other value they can provide to team at that higher cost. Well we know what's out there and we can choose to believe what we want to believe. What we do know is the team has traded McCann and we have been patient with our prospects otherwise. McCann probably doesn't PK anymore because maybe he's not suited for it? Never said Pearson is a PK stud, but it's added value. Like I've said, he's like a Higgins who can PK, play PP minutes, plays physical and has generally been a 0.5ppg player. We will see how the off-season plays out. But signing a player who's worth his contract doesn't seem to be worth all this gripe. We can buyout Eriksson and move out JV still which would open up decent cap space anyway if needed. We won't likely be going after the big fish anyway and if we look at the secondary market, then they're going to be cheaper options anyway. My point is that to those that think Benning is destroying this team needs to step back and look at the vast improvement of the team overall that he took over. If you don't think the team he took over wasn't a mess, then that's just being ignorant.
  14. Who's on your protect list? He may still protect him in the end, depending on what moves we make, but at least we have the flexibility. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
  15. The point about Eriksson is that you rather pool a bunch of money to sign a "legit" 2W. I am demonstrating that it may not work out as LE was still putting up good numbers prior to joining us. It would be much more crippling to go in at that value for it to not work out. We have Podkolzin coming in and if he shows he can handle the minutes, then Pearson looks just fine on the 3rd line. That "legit 2W" may be a one dimensional offensive player where if he doesn't produce, he could be garbage at a higher cap hit (unless you want to provide reasonable examples of who we could have targeted, keeping in mind it would be a UFA that could sign anywhere else if they choose instead). With that said, it wouldn't have mattered if we signed LE then or now because if we get what Eriksson is, then there's no right time for that signing regardless. McCann never seemingly wanted to be here and there were other outlets demonstrating his attitude issues. Plus you're comparing a player on a RFA contract vs UFA contract. McCann doesn't PK either. We don't have to throw a kid into the fire, but they can be given a look and have been tried in Utica in that role and haven't looked out of place at all. In Jasek's case, he's elevated his game at center. If they're not deemed ready, then a stop gap bargain player like Soderberg could be acquired. If there are many positive reasons to retain Pearson, at a pay cut no less, then you make the move. If you want to wait and prioritize the 3C spot first and put everything else on the back burner, that's fine, but there are risks involved as well. Benning did this and was also criticized for it because we supposedly lost Stecher prioritizing filling a top 4 dman spot instead. It just seems very much like no matter what Benning does is seen as being the wrong move yet I'll take the team now compared to what Benning had to take over any day of the week.
  16. We couldn't take care of the 3C issue now and would have to compete for an "upgrade" in the market anyway. Might as well take care of what we have now especially if there's good reason to bring him back into the fold rather than make him "wait" and possibly lose him and also not acquire the upgrade. If we throw a bunch of money at a 3C UFA to convince them to join us, then we will certainly be "overpaying" in the market (see Markstrom, Tanev, etc). Unless we are talking about a secondary market with the leftovers that will take whatever to stay in the league, in which case we can still target even with the Pearson signing since he actually took a slight pay cut for a player that can be utilized in many roles.
  17. Pearson can play several roles. He has chemistry with Bo offensively and defensively. Podkolzin could be that 2W that you're talking about at a fraction of the cost (also an excellent passer), but instead of pencilling him in and having Bo take on two young wingers, this allows Podkolzin earn his spot if he can take it and Pearson is just fine on a 3rd line role as well. Lind and Jasek have shown quite well in Utica at center. We constantly hear about how we need to give young players a chance and then the idea gets crapped on. If they aren't ready, a stop gap in Soderberg for example should suffice. I mean we could target someone in UFA, but that could also end up with the second coming of Eriksson. It doesn't always work. We know Pearson works well with Bo and we know he can cover many roles which is well worth his cap hit. He isn't a "bargain", but this isn't crippling by any means.
  18. If a young player outperforms him for a top 6 spot, then he simply drops to the third line. He's paid well within a middle 6 role. He's not road blocking anyone, simply the benchmark to earn a top 6 spot.
  19. There's still an entire off season to figure it out. Worst case scenario, we go with Pettersson, Horvat, Miller, Beagle as our centers. Maybe Lind gets a look at a sheltered 3C role or even Jasek. Maybe Sutter signs a cheap deal. Or add someone like Carl Soderberg on a cheap contract as a stop gap if a young player isn't ready. Pearson is like Chris Higgins in that he can be used in all situations. At 3.25, his cap hit is fine for what he provides. It also provides Bo some stability on wing in which he hasn't had until the past couple of seasons.
  20. So Benning re-signed a player that actual had interest around the league (=valuable player) and that's apparently a demonstration of non-savvy GMing. How many 3.25 million players are regular 20+ goal scorers? He's currently the 186th highest paid forward which puts him at the bottom end of a top 6 player, which seems right in line of what he is. Might need to re-evaluate the expectation versus reality.
