  1. Something that doesn't get pointed out enough is that his dad is still battling parkinsons and cancer. We've seen how family oriented Brock is, we've seen him get emotional in interviews talking about it. I think we often forget our favourite players are human too. At some point we have to admit that his father's situation is at the very least distracting for even the most professional of athletes. Couple that with injury issues and maybe getting used to a different role on the team and it's easy to see he has a lot on his plate at the moment. Maybe a trade to Minny makes sense for all parties although I hope he sticks it out and returns to his past self on the Canucks.
  2. I don't think Gillis/Gilman left on a good note with ownership so I don't think it'll happen. I've always liked the idea of Gilman playing some role within the organization if at least to make sure our salary cap is well managed but I think the Canucks are in need of something fresh. I feel bringing in some good, experienced hockey people is the best move.
  3. Why not bring in Rikard Gronberg the ex-Sweden national team coach. With ties to the Sedins he might be a good candidate to consider as there aren't very many good coaches available. He's currently coaching ZSC Lions in Switzerland but has been itching for a go in the NHL. Give him till the end of the year and re-assess.
  4. This must be Benning's "show me" year from Aquaman. Basically a "I'll back you fully and sign off on anything you need but in return, the team needs to make a playoff run". That's my guess at least. I'm sure a lot of you are thinking the same.
  5. It's funny the amount of Canucks fans that had their pitchforks out after we took EP. I remember I made a damage control post to show we actually made the best pick and got absolutely blasted by the majority on here. Soon after that though the large media outlets started praising the pick and then mood started to change. It's always fun being a Canucks fan on draft day.
  6. I'm thinking maybe we should get hired as scouts for the Canucks
  7. I'm born and raised in Vancouver but my family is in Budapest so I live there for spurts throughout the year (probably like 3 months of the year). Going to be moving there permanently in the summer though. Because it's my home just as much as Vancouver I'm probably a little biased but it's incredibly beautiful. They don't call it the Paris of the east for nothing. If you want to travel there, I'd recommend to do it in the summer cause it's by far the best time to go. They also tend to speak a lot more English now a days compared to when I was a kid so it shouldn't be that hard to get around however I will warn you that English is still very foreign if you leave the touristy places (even within them it can be hit or miss). Budapest has a special charm though cause although it feels like a big city it really isn't so you can explore around with relative ease. I'd highly recommend everyone at least stop by Budapest if they're in that region of Europe cause it truly is unique.
  8. A lot of things still need to happen for my prediction to be proven right so no credit should be given yet. I just remember being so shocked that no one was talking about the kid. A lot of talk of Vilardi and Glass but Pettersson just fell through cracks with Canucks fans but also with the mainstream media. I think there was maybe only one or two other posters on here that wanted Pettersson. The arguments I got into in the draft threads are pretty funny now looking back at it though.
  9. What I saw from Goldobin is improvement. He showed flashes of brilliance in a tire fire Canucks lineup. All we can ask from our prospects is to improve, they are after all students of the game. What Goldobin needs to work on is consistency and obviously he needs to learn that there's more to the game then playing with the puck. Once he understands he can have an affect on the game without touching the puck then we'll start to see him turn the next page.
  10. When you listen to him describing his smarts and how he always comes out of the corners with the puck even though he's lighter than everyone else, I can't help but think of Datsyuk when he first came into the league. That was one of the comparisons I heard for EP and it's one of the ones I saw in him as well. I remember seeing how the majority of CDC didn't want to draft him at 5th overall, I'm just glad that everyone now sees what some of us saw in him and are getting excited about him. This is how Canucks fans should support their prospects!
  11. Where is the basis for this argument? Just look at how many times he gets shoved or hit hard into the boards, no matter how hard he goes down, he always gets back up. He's shown countless times that when the going gets tough he steps his game up. You can reference the WJC all you want but one tournament doesn't make a player. Also he didn't put up stats in the WJC but he definitely was impressive. He dangled through defenses with ease several times and just got unlucky with the finish and he did that being one of the youngest players on the team.
  12. You basically described Henrik Sedin. Stylistic comparisons have nothing to do with weight though. I personally wouldn't have compared Pettersson to Johansen, but that's not because of their weight but because they have different play styles. They're both playmakers but the comparison ends there. Pettersson is a Backstrom/Datsyuk hybrid if anything but he's so hard to figure out a stylistic comparison for because he plays like Elias Pettersson and no one else. That was part of the reason I think he might turn out to be a pretty special player. Great players have no comparison and I find it very hard to find one for Pettersson.
  13. Pettersson comparison: Datsyuk and Backstrom He's a minimum 2 year project and will most likely compete for a roster spot in his draft +3 year. If Glass compares to Scheifele then he's also around 3-4 years from the NHL. I don't care how long it takes for them to make it, I care about how good they'll be when they finally do. Glass is vanilla and we need a little spice. First time in 3 years Benning picks who I want in the first round so I'm ecstatic with the pick.
  14. That's fair argument. You pointed it out yourself though, he looks like the best player in the draft if not for his weight. Let me ask you though, If we had to bet on a 6 ft 2 17 year old who will be on a strict diet and workout plan for the foreseeable future, would you bet on him gaining weight or staying the same weight? That's why I think it isn't much of a risk simply because I know he will get bigger. I like Glass but when you watch him play he doesn't seem like much of a playmaker, he always seems like the trigger man. He reminds me more of a young Kesler. I haven't watched that much of him so maybe I just missed the games where he showcased his playmaking side, but I really didn't see that in his game. What I did see though is like Kesler, someone who always makes the right decision with the puck. Not the greatest passer, but always makes the safe play. That's a valuable attribute, I just think that he lacks the creativity to be a high end 1st line center. Edit: Basically just saying that he doesn't run the powerplay or run the show, he uses his teammates to get him in a better position to score. I think he'll be a great player once he puts on some weight, I just think Pettersson is the better fit and you shouldn't have PTSD after the pick
  15. Necas is definitely intriguing as well. I'd probably have hims right behind Pettersson. Thing is, I haven't heard the Canucks mention him once so I don't think we take him. I think he ends up in Detroit.
  16. If Pettersson doesn't put on some muscle than he definitely has a high risk of busting but he's just so damn smart I think he'll be able to transition to the play in any league. Every prospect has a high chance of busting though. They bust when they don't overcome their weaknesses which is why work ethic is so important when judging these 17 year olds. A player with multiple weaknesses has a higher chance of busting. Petterssons only weakness is his weight. Vilardi is his skating. Glass is if he can continue his current trend cause before this year he was very average, I also think he needs to improve on his puck skills cause they're extremely underwhelming.
  17. Goldobin and Dahlen (he's pretty feisty and more of a shooter) are the ONLY higher end finesse forward we have in the pipeline and they're wingers. We need a playmaker not a bruiser. We can get solid bruisers in the later rounds of the draft or through the free agent market. We need a center with a ceiling high enough to takeover for Henrik when he retires. Who's gonna run the powerplay when Henrik retires? I love Bo Horvat but it won't be him. Pettersson isn't a hitter but he still has great defensive skills. He doesn't win the puck off players with hits, he does it with smarts. Think Datsyuk when he's hounding the puck carrier (Datsyuk could get very physical as well but he mainly stripped the puck off people using his stick and his smarts). All three of Pettersson, Glass, Vilardi have sound defensive games, but none are bruisers. What separates them is their offensive ceiling, Pettersson undoubtedly has the best offensive upside. I wouldn't be disappointed if we drafted any of them, I just believe that Pettersson will be the best of the lot.
  18. I don't understand the skepticism regarding Petterssons size. Pettersson stands at ~6 ft 2 and weighs in at ~165 lbs. Ehlers weighed around the same, Nylander wasn't much heavier, however both were shorter and they turned out great. I think JB learned his lesson with the 2014 draft. A teenager with surreal hockey IQ and skill is more valuable than a fully developed teenager with mediocre skill/hockey IQ. You have to remember that these kids are only 17. How much did you weigh when you were 17? I was 6 ft 1 and 165lbs and today I'm the same height but I weigh 190 lbs. These kids bodies haven't fully developed yet and they sure as hell haven't been hitting the gym seriously yet. Yes, everyone has different genes so we don't all grow/put on weight at the same rates but I'm willing to bet that by the time Pettersson is 21 he'll be at least 180 lbs. Even then his hockey IQ along with his skillset will always allow him to play/thrive at the highest level.
  19. I don't care who they pick as long as they turn out to be a 1st line center or a top defenseman who can play the powerplay. The only reason our powerplay has struggled is we lack the threat on the point. Teams know that they can double team the Sedins cause the shot from the point won't be lethal. My preference as I'm sure you all know by now is Pettersson or Heiskanen. Both players, if they reach their potential, could be the best players out of this draft.
  20. Ron Hainsey was able to get a 2nd round pick and a solid career AHL'er, THAT should tell you all you need to know about the market for defensemen right now. Sergachev, as much potential as he has, still hasn't proven himself in the show but he was able to get Drouin. Defensemen are a hot commodity in todays NHL and they cost a premium. We bring up the Larsson trade as it's a perfect example of what Tanev should command on the market. I don't think it's crazy that the asking price for Tanev is a young top 6 center. I don't understand why our fans always try to devalue our players as if to act like a voice of reason. I agree some proposals on here for Tanev are exaggerated but understand that Tanev has significant value. He's among the best in the NHL in defensive ability and he's just entering his prime signed to a great contract. Selling a hot commodity when the price is at it's peak demands a significant return, and that logic is valid for all markets including the Tanev market. Will other teams pay up? I don't know, but if they don't then I'm happy to keep him and it seems GM JB has the same train of thought.
  21. As someone already mentioned, Ehrhoff was the big one. Edler and Stetcher also played well together. Internationally, whenever I watch team Sweden they tend to pair him with Karlsson. I'm not sure who they paired him with this year but I bet it was an offensive D or at least a good puck mover. His track record with puck movers is by far the best compared to when paired with defensive defensemen.
  22. Not at all. Edler has proven in the past he does well with slick puck movers and not with big physical guys. When Edlers partner handles zone exits, that's when we see the dominant Edler we all love.
  23. Seems my eye for talent isn't that far behind Bennings I'd love Pettersson at 5th overall, he may just end up to be one of the best players in this years draft.
