[Discussion] Slava Voynov (Discussion)
Toews replied to Toews's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Sorry Heffy but I would volunteer to drive them all to the airport if it came with a Cup. In any case this was an interesting thought exercise. To me there is no wrong answer here, I never really thought that Voynov was remotely a possibility but it was an interesting scenario to contemplate. I am not at all disappointed by the answers, I do think domestic violence is a serious issue and I am glad to see posters feel very strongly about it as well. -
[Discussion] Slava Voynov (Discussion)

You are confusing me for someone with an altruistic motive. Voynov has a skillset that is both rare and extremely valuable. His resume has accolades that effectively put him in the top 1% of 1% in his chosen profession. Simply put he is damn good at what he does, the only question is the cost, in Voynov's case that matter is significantly complicated by his history of domestic violence. Signing him would come at a significant cost in terms of PR and the hope would be that you can offset it by the value that he brought on the ice. Not all Astros fans were pleased when their team signed Roberto Osuna but curiously he wasn't on their mind too often when they celebrated winning a championship. -

True but a good culture can accept one or two questionable characters. I also make no presumptions about Voynov's character nor his professionalism. As far as I know there was never an issue in the locker room in his time in LA. If he can fall in line then he can be a useful player for the Canucks. But this thread is mostly to gauge how people feel about potentially signing him. It is my personal belief that people can grow and should be given the opportunity to make up for the mistakes that they make in their life. Before anything I think a decent psych evaluation would be necessary. I would also talk to his teammates and coaches to get a better sense of how he interacts with those around him. But what he did does not preclude me from considering signing him, as long as I see some remorse/repentance and maybe some growth. -
Pros RHD UFA Experienced Cup Winner Likely future member of the Triple Gold Club Would likely be a decent buffer for Tryamkin/Podkolzin Cons Convicted Wife-beater Hasn't played in the NHL in a while Obviously what he did is heinous, but based on his experience, accolades and the position that he plays, he holds considerable value. He would fill a need for us and will probably only require a 1 year 'show me' contract ie. doesn't need to be protected in expansion draft. Worth pursuing or not is the question... The upside is a top pairing RHD...the downside... well you already know what it is.

Are you aware both Danault and Drouin are from Quebec? Pretty sure there is going to be some Qubecois export tax (probably a 1st round pick).

VAN Ranked #3 For Prospect/Young Depth & Quality
Toews replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Canucks Talk
Not a prospect ranking if Pronman is including NHLers who are no longer Calder eligible next season. I would advise the OP to change the title to "organizational rankings" for accuracy. https://theathletic.com/2005045/2020/09/10/pronman-2020-21-nhl-organizational-rankings/ -
https://www.tmz.com/2020/09/10/nba-danuel-house-allegedly-brought-female-covid-tester-to-bubble-room-houston-rockets/ Widespread violations of bubble protocols would be a HUGE development. Both owners and players have a lot of money at stake in this resumption. It works only if the league prevents a coronavirus outbreak, which is why these restrictions were put into place. After weekly announcements, the NBA has gone more than three weeks since its last update on coronavirus testing in the bubble. Even with just this incident, there’s plenty to sort out. How did House get implicated if there’s no video of him and the woman didn’t name him? How did Chandler get cleared? There are many unanswered questions from the outside. It’s also unclear how many answers the league has right now. https://nba.nbcsports.com/2020/09/10/report-alleged-danuel-house-incident-believed-to-be-far-from-isolated/ I hope this is a case of the COVID testers creating a prostitution ring to exploit millionaire athletes stuck in their hotel rooms. But maybe my imagination is running wild, my guess is this gets swept under the rug, maybe this House character gets a slap on the wrist.

Ottawa makes all transactions with respect to Eugene Melnyk's bank account. This makes adding ~12-14M to the payroll in return for a (likely) productive player on an ELC a non-starter for Ottawa.

[Speculation] Canucks looking to move Jake Virtanen
Toews replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Raymond, Ballard and a 1st was the more common iteration. Gotta give Canucks fans everywhere some credit, at least we were considerate enough to include a 1st.- 323 replies

You probably aren't going to be around for too much longer if you insult other posters as well as our players. Jake had just turned 23 (not 24 as you falsely claimed) at camp last year and while he didn't meet the standard of fitness of professional athletes, to call him fat one would at least have to be in the 1% as far as fitness is concerned. The rest of your criticism is about Jake's personal life which I believe is not permitted on this forum. There are also many NHLers with 'active' lifestyles so (if your claim is true) Jake is far from alone in that regard and none of us are in a position to say that it is definitively affecting his performance. Also while I am not blown away by his defensive play, it is objectively false to say that he back checks once every 3 games. I think there is some legitimate criticism of Virtanen's play, not sure why people go way overboard and make it personal.

Sounds like you are coming around to my side of the argument. LeChina was a "huge fraud" and needed two other superstars, and still got outplayed by Jason Terry in that epic chokejob against the Mavs en route to his first titles.

League office has too many clowns who don't care about player safety to really provide a meaningful deterrent to these kind of hits. Then there is the union which will always try to whittle down the punishment to a slap on the wrist. The victim could be badly concussed but the union will still advocate on behalf of the offending player. Motte has 3M in career earnings, a history of concussions, I would give him 8 games, I am not saying that's the current standard but it needs to be to truly deter such garbage.1-3 games is easily forgettable.

I was joking about including Embiid but I think Giannis going to the Heat might make a lot of sense. Butler imho is severely underrated, I would take him over a lot of guys that are perceived to be better but they don't bring the intangibles that he brings in boatloads. Then you have Bam who is just starting to come into his own. Seems like a more attractive situation than the Raptors could provide, less taxes as well.
-
He should recruit Embiid and together they can take their talents to South Beach. Win some easy titles and erase that reputation of playoff failure. Heck there is a clear precedent for tucking your tail between your legs and running from competition to create super teams in order to win. Why should Giannis be held to a higher standard?
-
At least he is consistent, yesterday he was arguing that getting lippy with a cop should justifiably get you shot.

Who told you to feel guilty about being white? Black Lives Matter is primarily about anti-black racism. Plenty of supporters of the BLM movement happen to be white. Thanks for telling us your ancestry, not sure what relevance this holds to the BLM movement. Good for you. All black people expect from other races and backgrounds, is not to be targeted due to their skin colour. Too much to ask? What does this have to do with BLM? I don't feel these emotions that you do, "shame", "guilt"... For what? I have not targeted black people myself, I am not responsible for the actions of those came before me or those who continue to perpetuate violence upon black people. That's fine, you simply want to "move forward" probably because racism has little to no effect of your life. Black people want real, meaningful change because their people are getting killed and brutalized and they feel under threat. Its great that you ended your post with this comment so that we can see what this is really about, your entitlement. You felt all the emotions that you weren't asked to feel, "shame", "guilt", but you refused to feel the only emotion that black people are asking people for which is empathy, just plain old caring for your fellow man.

Nope, a badge doesn't make you better than the average citizen. Yes, which is why we need people in those situations who don't behave like neanderthals. Stop & frisk was just that. Sorry but I am nobody's bitch. I will do whatever I deem fit that is within my constitutional rights. Do you think just because you grovel in front of them that they will let you go? Innocence or guilt, you shouldn't be in harm's way for speaking your mind. Self-respect? Preserving one's dignity? I think's that well worth fighting for. Clearly and demonstrably false. We have seen enough video evidence of disproportionate response from police. There is a clear difference between words (attitude) and action (resisting). You are for some reason choosing to conflate them.
-
I have never felt so threatened by the cops that I won't freely speak my mind especially when I know I have done nothing wrong. I will treat a cop the same as I treat any other human being, reciprocating the same level of respect they have shown me. They don't get elevated in status and power just because they are carrying a gun and badge. Your method seems way too subservient to me, people shouldn't get threatened with deadly force because they "talked back" and "gave attitude". Cops should also maintain their professionalism at all times and should be held accountable if they escalate a situation.

Conservative Party of Canada Holds Annual Convention
Toews replied to DonLever's topic in Off-Topic General
Feel free to post this PM I sent you, I have only had one conversation in PM on January 8th, 2019, when you reached out to me. I don't mind posting the entire conversation here, we can let everyone else judge whether this claim is just another figment of your imagination. -

I don't mind giving conversion therapy a chance but I feel like those advocating for it should be the first ones to demonstrate it in action. Surely conversion therapy should work in both directions, so as long as they can prove that their remedies have given them a new found affinity for the shaft, they can then advocate it as a remedy for others. Also its unsurprising that FTG flipped his $&!# at a poster because the facts were inconvenient to his position regarding this issue. FTG is prone to sermonizing his love of the facts when they are even vaguely in his favour, but its "get a life", "post somewhere else" when they contradict his core beliefs. Believe whatever you want, the reality doesn't change, conversion therapy is poppycock unless proven otherwise using science, and charlatans coercing the vulnerable to repress themselves under the guise of faith should bear culpability for the pain that they cause to their victims.. -
The Tyler Toffoli trade is busting hard for us
Toews replied to CanucksFan8353's topic in Canucks Talk
I would hit the undo button on this trade. I am fairly sure that Benning would too if he had 20/20 hindsight but remember we made this trade because of Boeser's injury. Right after Markstrom got hurt as well so the value that Benning paid was for Toffoli to play those last stretch of games which obviously the pandemic wiped out. Also the cap remaining flat made it even more of struggle to retain Toffoli long term which was definitely a consideration when this trade was made. I feel like Schaller would have been interesting to watch in the post-season, the reason he was even signed by Benning is because he had a stellar run with the Bruins the previous year. It would have been interesting to see if he could replicate that success. Madden and the 2nd were obviously useful futures which we could have used to go after an even bigger target in free agency or next deadline. But its kind of pointless crying over this considering how much this team has achieved. I am never one to deflect when this organization deserves blame for poor decision making but this is not one of those scenarios.
