Yeah I don't think that gives him any substantial platform. People have only heard of him because he was a decent hockey player in junior with some good stints in the AHL. He is a fringe NHLer, who was never at all any good at the highest level. No one cared about his views regarding anything except hockey, until his private group chat was leaked by a hacker. I don't see any power dynamic here, just because someone is a minor (emphasis on minor) celebrity doesn't give them any more power over the the common person.

Why is that? Leipsic may be a NHL player but that doesn't put him any higher on the hierarchy. As a fringe NHLer Leipsic has no platform so his thoughts don't hold anymore significance. He is for all intents and purposes an equal to the women he was denigrating. I disagree with putting women on a pedestal, I am not sure if that was your intent but that's the way it comes across. If our stated goal is equality then we cannot contradict that through our actions. That means no well-intentioned special privilege.

Media likes sensationalism because it creates emotion in the audience. Emotional people keep coming back to the trough for more material to be emotional about. But that doesn't mean that I don't believe that Judd Brackett would be a terrible loss for this franchise. He's grown into his own here, climbing the ladder one rung at a time and is now an integral part of our draft process, which is one area where everyone can agree the Canucks have exceeded expectations. I hate the idea of tinkering with a process that works, you better have the right replacement in mind if you are going that route. Weisbrod to me just ain't it. Nope, I don't want anything to do with that $&!#sandwich. Maybe I am a little emotional after all.

Burrows is a fighter, he was willing to do whatever it took to get him to his dream of playing in the NHL. He did some questionable stuff along the way that he probably feels ashamed of at this point. I bet a lot of NHLers are in the same company excepting a few narcissists like Prust/Avery. Societal expectations change, people grow and adapt to those expectations. Anyone watching the Last Dance documentary sees Michael Jordan acting like a complete a-hole and that is the greatest damn athlete of all time. Leipsic has now been relentlessly abused on the internet for hours, his name is now worse than mud. His family likely has to deal with the fall-out of his actions as well. I hope the experience will be humbling and it likely will be for him. If he shows real contrition with his words and actions, I hope that people will get off his back. He will always be trolled about this however and that to me that is a sad reflection of our culture, for some nothing will be good enough.

Ehh nothing really seems like "grand drama" to me. Its just the usual office politics, which lots of people have first hand experience in. I wouldn't describe it as childish, more like cut-throat, reading about Weisbrod's history definitely leaves you with an impression like someone else said earlier in this thread.

Agreed, everyone deserves respect and I do believe we are headed to better places in the future regarding this. But until we do I have to question the means through which we arrive there especially as mob mentality can ruin the lives of people. The respect should be genuine rather than compliance through fear. We should be allowed to express ourselves for understanding to occur, fear breeds mistrust which rears its ugly head in insidious ways that aren't always visible on the surface. People just start to hide it better and that doesn't benefit anybody.

True, but not all of it is fiction and people have in recent years begun to pick and choose whichever information is convenient to a particular narrative and disregarding the rest as "fiction" or "fake news". While we should definitely demand higher reporting standards from the media, we also need to look at ourselves critically and find out our own biases and work to minimize them from our perception so that we can objectively criticize journalism.

I did not read the messages, I think I would probably lose a few brain cells if I tried to go through all of it. Leipsic's comments probably got the most publicity because he is the most high profile (LOL!) name on that list. I do wonder how many people were in the group, how many were active etc. Whether they all said something. I think organizations should always indicate exactly what they thought was offensive, specify that it was sexism, racism, xenophobia, misogyny etc. as the reason for dismissal. Leaving it at "conduct unbecoming" or similar vague verbiage leads to confusion imho.

Yes, that's what is I meant in my last line. You can't keep throwing your beliefs in someone's face in an attempt to harass them. I can't go up to someone who is trans and repeatedly let them know that I don't believe they are the gender they want to be referred by. This includes deliberately using the wrong pronoun even after they have let you know their preference. I think we can extend such courtesy to all humans to refer to them respectfully and not in a derogatory manner.

Question, what if you are the one who is receiving this text and you didn't push back on it. I wonder how many these guys being released are getting scapegoated because of Leipsic's comments. Outraged mob calls for heads on spikes, organizations acquiesce because it's just sound business at that point. Due process goes out the window.

Its the job of the courts to interpret the law. Words can have multiple definitions, that doesn't mean that you can claim that something is violation of the law/civil rights if it doesn't meet the intent of the law. The intent of the law was never to prosecute those who mistakenly use the incorrect pronoun. Courts also rely on precedent and there is no precedent to make such a claim. The intent of the law was to go after people who will harass the LGBTQ community, so unless you are a massive a-hole and love to throw your beliefs in front of people to denigrate them, you are safe from prosecution.

Jankowski was a terrible pick looking at the way the Flames's draft played out. There were rumblings that he was a riser in the draft and there were many people talking about his potential. He was a fairly raw prospect on the other hand and consensus was that he would need to spend at least 3-4 years in college. In general you don't want to draft with your 1st round pick a forward that is that projected to be 3-4 years from now a player. The Flames also traded down from #14, passing on Girgensons, Ceci, Wilson, Hertl, Teravainen, Vasilevsky and Laughton. Weisbrod thinking Jankowski was Nieuwendyk was ridiculous, people were mocking that quote as soon as it came out. It was just laughable. The Flames under Feaster and Weisbrod were a comedy duo of mismanagement.

He's had such an unusual path to his development, which is why I want to hang on and see what is his ultimate upside. There are few guys who are comparable to him. Brett Connolly is close but even he had a more successful AHL career than Jake. I feel like he can still improve leaps and bounds, as much as he has improved he still seems raw.

No one gave a F about a fringe NHL tweener nor his thoughts toward his colleagues and their spouses until some hacker decided to cause a stir and leak his private messages on the internet. People have nothing better to do with their time than get outraged at the contents of said messages. The media loves covering degenerates because we can't seem to get enough of them. Oh look some idiot is doing the Nazi salute in a grocery store. Quick, grab your cameras and lets proliferate the image of this doofus through Twitter all over the world for likes and retweets.

Gear probably already had a plan for this, they may have used the Kane loophole to get Ferland into the lineup once the playoffs started. The cap issues as far as this year goes were minimal. We will have to see how they manage next year, hopefully "Lucky Jim" can roll on a couple of a compliance buyouts.

I don't believe that the Juolevi pick should be held against anybody. No one could have predicted the injuries he would suffer. Keep in mind that the Canucks had regarded PLD very highly at the time but the Jackets took him and it looks like an excellent pick. We were sorely in need for centers & defenseman. Scouting is a collaborative effort, its the staff that is tasked with coming up with the draft board. GMs do get a ton of say with top picks but lower picks are usually just taken off the board. GMs shouldn't be investing too much time in scouting as they have other duties to fulfill as well. A GM has to delegate and trust scouts to do their job as they will be the eyes and ears of the process. To me Linden's words about Brackett hold significance, it seems to indicate to me that he has an excellent eye and replacing him will be a tough challenge.

[Signing] Montreal signs 2018 2nd round pick Alexander Romanov

This kid is something else. I love the way he plays. Hopefully we will have multiple gifs of him trucking Marchand. -
I can't say I agree. Linden and Benning were hired with a mandate set from ownership. Regardless of their personal feelings about rebuilding they had to toe the party line of making the playoffs while getting younger. This was why they avoided any mention of the word "rebuild" because it would be contradicting their mandate. Do you remember those town hall meetings with Benning and Linden? One of the reasons they turned unbearable and had to be cancelled because of fans questioning the team's stated goals vs. actions. Everyone at that time knew this team desperately needed to rebuild. If you go back to that time you will see plenty of threads made about what assets we had and what they would fetch in trades. We did have some valuable pieces at the time but they were squandered because ownership perhaps thought rebuilding may not have been the best option fiscally at the time. Personally whatever the case I hope we can keep the group together. Anyway I look at it, Brackett was a key member of our management team that had considerable success at the draft. I don't feel like it should be tinkered with, if I had to pick the weakest link of the bunch it would probably be Weisbrod

High number of +s just means you are voicing thoughts that are popular. Personally I don't do popularity contests, better to be disliked and tell people the truth rather than comforting lies.

I believe that Brackett was more a Linden guy than a Benning guy. Linden's interviews and his high praise for Brackett seems to indicate as much. Remember Linden was the President of hockey operations, he had a lot of say in who got assigned what roles in our staff. Now that he is gone, there seems to be reshuffling of the decks and it appears Brackett feels like his role and autonomy is being diluted.

Maybe the plan was to split the bill...

Source? There is nothing to indicate that the Canucks got rid of Leipsic because of his immaturity or lack of professionalism. He is an undersized player with average skating, those guys are always a long shot to make it. I would wager his inability to stick with a team is due to his lack of ability rather than conduct. Just look at the New England Patriots, they surround their players with the right structured environment. They can fit in just about anybody, as long as the player can demonstrate that they can stick to the game plan. Hockey players are not perfect human beings and not every player currently on the Canucks is a choir boy and nor should they be expected to be. As Bill Bellichick says "Do your job".

Not necessarily true. There are two parties making decisions here, the organization and the employee. Benning cannot force Brackett to stay if he isn't feeling valued.

If men fat shaming women is misogyny, are women who fat shame men exhibiting misandry? Seems like a stretch to me. The current fat &^@#up of a President gets enough such jokes made about him and he deserves every bit of it because he has made derogatory remarks about women in the past "fat", "pigs" etc. But it does bring up the issue of 'fat shaming' and whether we should consider it a more flagrant abuse than it currently is. I say no, people really don't have to take every insult to heart, be comfortable in your own skin. Someone calling you 'fat' doesn't make you so and if you see some truth in that statement then you need to make healthier choices. Diet and exercise are habits that will make you look your best as well extend your lifespan. Equality is an admirable goal to aspire to but often when people say they want equality, they don't want to take the bad with the good.
