You are going to read my post while ironing? If you are going to behave in a condescending manner at least try and make some sense.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
Toews replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
I am not entirely comfortable giving Benning the benefit of the doubt. You might scoff at that but I am a cynical person. The Virtanen pick really makes me wonder sometimes. It seems clear that we were going to build a team with the Bruins model in mind. I wonder how much that played into selecting Jake, did we select Jake because he fit a particular model? How much did him being a local pick play a part? I do admit that having not been in the room I have no idea how the selection actually went down so this is pure speculation of my part and I don't actually have any proof. I simply can't shake the feeling though. -

Its early to make that determination which is why I included this sentence. We shall see in the upcoming years how well the scouting department has really performed, which picks can be categorized as hits and misses. Based on the results of this Linden needs to look into which guys are actually pulling their weight. -

I am not going to dispute any of that. It is possible the Canucks did think that Juolevi would the best player at 5. At the end of the day though this is a results based business. If your BPA ends up significantly worse than the players picked right after him then you to reevaluate what went wrong and refine your scouting process. If you consistently find yourself picking worse players then you need to consider which of your scouts are up to the mark and let the dead weight go. In fact all your scouts should be under constant review, the ones that are consistently better in evaluations should be retained, the others should be let go. This is not to say that this has been the case thus far with the Canucks but to me its important that you are constantly evaluating and refining your methods. Stagnation is the worst thing that can happen to an organization. IMO no one should feel that their job is 100% safe regardless of the results that they produce. -

A bit hypocritical to say that Fors is making too much out of a quote when you seem to be doing the same. Its entirely possible that Tkachuk wanted to come to Vancouver instead. I don't see how you seem to have made the determination that he "certainly preferred to go to CAL". -

Agreed 100%. I shake my head at the people they say things like "We needed size in our lineup which is why Virtanen was the right pick". The Canucks are still in the infancy of a rebuild. Half the prospects that people are throwing into future lineups are question marks. In most cases unless a player comes into the NHL and proves himself, penciling him in long term lineups is not smart. More prospects bust than reach their potential. The Canucks at this stage have far too many holes to prioritize particular positions. If two prospects are equal then you go with the one that is more of a need but quite honestly for the most part no two prospects are truly equal. Drafting isn't an exact science and you may have to make a judgement call but with picks this high you always go with the player who you think has the brightest future. -
The difference is that this is the Jake Virtanen thread. Comments, complaints, criticism, praise etc are all pertinent as long as they are on the topic of Jake Virtanen. This is the purpose of this thread, its even titled "Jake Virtanen Talk". Yet what are your contributions to this thread? Just endless whinging about the opinions expressed in this thread. Its hilarious how offended you get that everyone doesn't conform to your views. This is how a forum works, you are going to see posts you disagree with. I know I am not the only one who finds it sad that you sit on your high horse and berate anyone who you disagree with. It isn't just this thread, you rarely ever stick to addressing the content of a person's post. Instead it's just endless complaining, berating, ad-hominem attacks and insults. You think it makes you look superior to others but it only makes you look petty and incapable of intelligent debate. If you focused your energy into improving the quality of your posts instead of complaining about others, your posts might have some intellectual value.

I and I am assuming most Canadians do not care about being a military power. I do agree that we need to spend enough so that we aren't a compete push over and can defend our interests. I also don't give two figs about what the cheeto-dusted clown thinks of our spending. At the end of the day Canada will decide how much we spend and we won't kowtow to anyone's demands.
-
Just turned 26. Indeed, I would say my life's motto is "Ambition over pride". Agreed.
-
Regardless of your thoughts on the state of the Canadian military, how can you argue that it is a waste of government resources to invest in a military? Its not like Canada is overspending like our neighbor down south. We need a military presence to protect our interests especially in disputed territories. Please elaborate. What is this "code of reality"? Just because you had a negative experience does not mean that the military is filled with "innept goofs". Anecdotal evidence is a poor way to judge the state of matters. IMO letting your ego get in the way of your goals is something that I find to be not very smart. It took some tough lessons for me to come to that understanding. Your ego isn't going to pay your bills. The day I realized that nothing was beneath me is the day I began to make meaningful progress towards achieving my goals.

They draft and develop their own talent. The only time they trade picks is to strengthen their roster for a playoff run. Even then they can afford to do it because they are overflowing with prospects already in the system. I believe this year they had 4 prospects on Team Canada and not one was a first round pick.
-
IMO the Lightning are an exemplary organization. Winning the Cup requires a lot of things to go exactly right for you but the way they continue to draft and develop talent is something else to behold. Just look at the talent they have grown through their system over the years and the state of their farm club which is miles ahead of Utica. A big part of that is their drafting philosophy. They don't shy away from picking smaller players and put a lot of emphasis on hockey IQ, skating and skill. This past year they were extremely unlucky with injuries, they had half their lineup out and they still managed to pull it within a few points of making the playoffs. That is because they have an amazing level of depth/ The league is undergoing a shift in style of play and Tampa is well ahead of the curve. I don't buy into the narrative that a team like Tampa cannot succeed in the West. They struggled with injuries this past year but they don't have any trouble playing against bigger teams.

I never said that but if that's how you feel, you can let it out on here. As Dazzle said though the recruitment process isn't perfect and people have had long waiting times to get in. If you had wanted it as bad as others did, you have stuck with it. Now you are letting one possibly overworked recruiter color your entire view of the military and referring to them as "leeches". Its just makes you sound like a jilted lover who has yet to get over it. We don't always get the things we want in life, that doesn't mean you wallow away in bitterness and contempt. Its a trite and overused saying but, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." And if you still can't get over it, then get in touch with a recruiter and make it happen instead of complaining about it. Don't let your ego get into the way of the things you want in life. And now I am done preaching.

I have wanted to bring this discussion up in this thread for a while but people are quite touchy here. I read a quote from Benning after the draft about his influence on the Canucks picks. I have tried hard to find this quote but I can't seem to locate it. The interpretation that I got was that Benning had an influence on the Canucks picks at the top of the draft but he left the scouts to make their picks for the lower end of the draft. I do remember him distinctly mentioning that the scouts seemed to "know the players". For the most part GMs in general don't really play too much of a part in lower rounds. No human being can possibly watch and rank players from 2 different continents. That is why you delegate and rely on your regional scouts to unearth players for you. Example Thomas Gradin scouts players for the Canucks from Sweden.

Drew reminds me of the kind of person that asks out a girl, who rejects him so afterwards he talks all kinds of $&!# about her. "She was a dumb slut anyway." "The military are a bunch of tax payer money leeches."

A mock draft is a prediction of how the draft will play out. If you guys remember the Canucks tipped their hand regarding the Virtanen pick. My guess is that the Canucks like the consensus at the time saw the draft as having a clear top 5 with Virtanen at 6. So they saw no reason to be secretive about that pick. JB was also coming from Boston and was expected to build the team based on the "Bruins model". So that was another indication that the undersized skilled players weren't going to be on the radar and the big local power forward fit the mold of the team that JB envisioned. I am more curious who the mock drafts had at 6 before Benning was hired.
-
He did more than that. He said that he will bump our posts when Jake becomes a top 6 forward. Most scouts seem to hedge their bets regarding players unless it a top talent like McDavid/Matthews/Eichel. But what do they know, they should come and consult Rob's crystal ball instead.

The fat jokes got old pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, he did deserve some stick for coming to camp out of shape. But out of shape for a professional athlete is still better than the average person. And somehow I doubt that every person yukking it up on here is ripped.

I wouldn't have asked if I knew where to start. Politics isn't the only issue in the range of my interests. I need a decent source where I can start reading about our countries military capabilities and that of other countries. How do we compare? You say we are underfunded and that might the case. I would like to come to that conclusion independently though, not saying that I don't believe you or even disagree but I need information on this subject and I don't know where to begin. Preferably I need a source that gives the facts without any judgments based on those facts.
-
Maybe if he has a bad camp or picks up an injury he might see a few games in the AHL but other than that I can't see him staying there very long. The Canucks just don't have the depth to see anyone challenge him for a spot IMO. He would make the lineup of teams far better than the Canucks. I also won't be surprised to see him in the running for the Calder. Not saying he would be the favorite to win but I think he can be a finalist and give a good challenge to the eventual winner. Next year's crop of rookies looks strong as well with the likes of Connor, Keller, McAvoy, Chabot and White.

If this rebuild is to be a successful one then the Canucks need to hit on their top picks. No number of Baerstchis and Granlunds can compensate for that. You need elite talent to win and your top picks represent your best shot at acquiring them. I don't care if it is Rasmussen or Suzuki either but who ever they draft needs to turn into a core player.
-
They aren't though. Their own fans are lambasting the picks right now. Flames fans have been unhappy with Bennett all season. Isles fans want to clean house with their scouts and current GM due to their poor drafting record, Strome, Neidereitter, Dal Colle have all disappointed and I can assure you Isles fans are pissed. Fleury is a different story because he is tracking to be a top 4 defenseman. While Canes fans aren't exactly thrilled with the pick, they have hopes that the team will trade Hanifin for an elite forward and Fleury can take the spot as a top 4 defenseman along with Faulk, Slavin, Pesce, they will still have an excellent D core. It also doesn't hurt that Sebastian Aho is looking like an elite talent and they got him at #34.

I am afraid I am woefully ignorant regarding anything related to this field. If anyone has any resources that they can provide so that I can at least get started with the basics, it will be greatly appreciated.
