Marner is around the same size as well, 5'11 170 and he does everything for his team.
-
You might be right.

Unless Jake was in rehab with Kassian I am not sure that had much influence on him.
-
I am not sure about that one either though. IMO he bulked up because that is what he thought was expected of him. Most young players his age try and bulk up in the offseason because at that age you get easily knocked off the puck by older, stronger opponents. Jake did not have that problem as he was already physically mature. He may have thought that adding more weight to his frame would be an asset but he miscalculated how much it would affect his speed. I am not sure how much of this is lack of commitment as opposed to a young player that does not know what weight he should be playing at.

There were people here who voiced concerns before the draft about his shoulder but many including me shot them down with the argument that he is still young and at an age where he can recover from any injury. Looks like they were more right than they got credit for at the time.
-
Why is that? Chaput has more points in 10 games with Utica than Jake has in 42. The last time Megna was in the AHL he was a ppg player. Gaunce went down to the AHL and scored more points in a weekend than Jake had in the last month or so. Those guys are experienced pros as well, they stay in shape, they work hard and they do what is asked of them despite their limited skillset. Jake has better tools than them but until he learns how to use them he is well behind even AHL lifers like Chaput.

Maybe in the future it might be better to just move the thread from the prospects forum to this one once a player has graduated to being a full time player. Usually it should be obvious when a player has proven that he is belongs permanently in the NHL.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
Toews replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
There is if you believe every prospect will pan out. Reminds me of when people were penciling Fox, Shinkaruk and Jensen into the top 6. The only way to objectively look at what you have in the pipeline is by comparing your pool to other teams. Also no offense but if you want to have an actual discussion then stop trying to define my position. I can do that by myself, thanks. -
2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

Not enough has been done to rectify this scarcity of talent though. For a team that has bottomed out 2 out of the last 3 years, there should be more in the pipeline than there currently is. Using picks and prospects to patch holes on the roster and to nullify the "age gap" has led to this situation. In Detroit's case they were attempting to extend an iconic streak. The Canucks have nothing riding on the line but seem to think that necessary steps cannot be taken because it would be "unfair" to the Sedins. Either that is a poor excuse or they are legitimately putting the needs of two players over what might be more beneficial to the franchise (and fans) in the long run. Anyway just my opinion even though I am probably going to get ripped apart by the brigade of Benning apologists. -
2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

I think ultimately with the way the lottery is set up teams will always be careful trading future 1sts without some sort of lottery protection. Letting someone walk away with a franchise talent because you risked your 1st is something that I don't think any GM will risk. The last time a mediocre team decided to trade multiple 1sts for one player was the Kessel trade and we all know how that trade worked out. -
Nice tantrum, and you accuse others of being a child. You may not enjoy objectivity but that does not mean that others have to follow your example. Being honest about a player's capabilities is not "hate", its just reality. When I have watched, Boeser, Juolevi, Demko they have impressed with their play. I have high hopes for them. JV on the other hand has consistently disappointed. I can't pretend he is amazing just because that's what some on here would like to hear and neither should anyone else.
-
I wonder if they asked Jake to stop hitting on account of his shoulder. I remember him last season and he used to genuinely love playing physical. That aspect of his game has been missing this year. Sometimes I wonder if the Canucks did not give enough consideration to his shoulder troubles at the draft.
-
The sad part is that those guys shouldn't even be discussed in the same conversation as Virtanen. Even if you look in the next tier of prospects, guys like Vrana, Svechnikov, Scherbak, Barbashev, Kapanen etc, you will find that all these guys have surpassed JV. These guys are contributing to their AHL teams in substantial ways. Meanwhile we are celebrating JV's biggest accomplishment this year which is losing 13 pounds. Gaunce went down and in one weekend accomplished what JV had in the past month.

Olli won't require three years.

Bob as in Bob Mackenzie? I am sure guntrix will take that.

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=127925239&postcount=655 Just thought this was an interesting post about Jake. I have to admire the fact that he is volunteering his time and getting involved with the local community.
-
I think the problem isn't the coaching but the fact that Jake isn't ready to play in the NHL. He wasn't last year either.
-
Nylander plays RW not LW. 3 years is a pretty significant age gap. There are lots of hockey players I don't like but I would take them on this team in a heart beat. You should not let hatred affect your objectivity. There are few hockey players I hate more than Corey Perry but saying that I wouldn't take Perry over Hansen only makes me look foolish and bitter as well as an incredible homer. Again Baer and Nylander aren't comparable talents. Their value is also skewed considering one is a rookie while the other is a player that is 3 years older. Depends on what you mean by "rounded into form".
-
Its a big game for Utica as well, so lets hope the above guy was right and Virtanen does have some "clutch" quality to his play.
-
Agreed and to add to this I would rather bet on the player that has shown steady progression to continue improving than one that has shown very little growth in his game.
-
That's exactly my point. You need a roster of 20 players to win a Cup. You simply cannot judge two players based on how many Cups they won. A player like Tavares has been surrounded by crap his entire career. Its also how you end up with the stupid list that TSN released a couple of years where a few executives and coaches voted Toews over Crosby as the best player in the league.
-
If Nylander were getting "eaten alive" against Western teams then he would not be posting identical numbers against Western teams as Eastern ones. Why would a guy who has more points than anyone on our team be playing in Utica? There is no empirical evidence to support the notion that Nylander will struggle in the playoffs, seems like an argument that is more wishful thinking than reality. Gaudreau has a ridiculously low PDO this year suggesting that he hasn't gotten a lot of puck luck this year. This notion that teams have figured out how to deal with him is just not true. That would be an incredibly risky trade, doubt LL would want to risk the whole thing blowing up in his face like it did with Chiarelli with Seguin.
-
Yes but when the context of the discussion is which pick is better then you have to consider which player ends up with the better career. I say this because the Cups argument has been used to justify a lot of dumb moves. Like Bruins fans claiming that they were the real winners of the Thornton trade as they got rid of a choker and won a Cup after. Its erroneous logic as they traded a future first ballot HOFer for a bag of pucks. The Sharks will always be the winners of that trade regardless of the Bruins Cup win in 2011.
-
When you refer to a player as having the "clutch" quality you have to see them perform in big moments. We have seen no evidence of such from Jake. He didn't do anything clutch in the Comets Calder Cup run a couple of years ago. He buckled under the pressure at the WJC last year. Those were the biggest games of his career thus far. Maybe he does become a clutch player in the future but that simply doesn't describe who he is right now.
-
Would you say that Boston was the real winner of the Joe Thornton trade because they were able to win a Cup while the Sharks failed to do so? What clutch goals has he scored? What evidence is there that Virtanen would be great in a playoff series while the other two wont? You don't have to be big or physical to dominate in the playoffs. Heck a couple of years ago three midgets led Tampa to the Cup Final.
