  1. I don't know about you but I come to this thread to read about Jake's play. Whether he is improving or not? What his strengths are? What is his effort level like on a nightly basis? What does he still need to work on? What I don't come here to read about is whether Horvat is better than Linden or whether the Canucks made the right pick or not. The reason why I decided to make that post is because it actually addressed everything that I was looking for. I find your last statement to be quite awful. It makes me wonder why you are even here if you don't respect the opinions of fans who take the time to watch the games and post their opinions. There are some intelligent posters on CDC who do take the time to sit down, watch the games and post informed opinions. There are many posters on CDC whose opinion I take seriously because they have displayed knowledge of the game. I am still a young fan myself so I still consider myself to be learning the ropes. There are posters here though who have watched the game for decades. You do them a disservice by disregarding their years of dedication as fans and students of the game. I respect your opinion and I do agree with you that HF is a cesspool of hate right now. The Canucks fans over there also seem to think of themselves as superior to the average fan. There is a hive mentality there where if your opinion doesn't support the consensus then you are likely to be pilled on. I don't know if I agree with you calling them trolls though. The purpose of trolling is to incite, the fans on HF are definitely still fans, they are just snooty and over the top. But that is just my perspective. The reason why I copied that post was so that we could actually have a discussion on Jake's play. Maybe those that regularly watch the Comets can find something in that post that they can dispute. I cannot put my stamp of approval or disapproval on that post because I haven't watched Jake play which is why I am relying on posters on CDC to dispute or validate the statements made in that post. @UticaHockey Maybe you can expose yourself to the firing squad and give us your honest opinion on Jake? I don't want to put you on the spot, so disregard this if you want.
  2. This was a post made on HF about Virtanen from the poster "Bad Goalie" who watches the Comets regularly. Do not read if it is going to affect your sensitivities as he/she doesn't sugarcoat anything. http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=126221881&postcount=65
  3. http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showpost.php?p=124931495&postcount=926 Sounds like the Jake that we saw in Vancouver.
  4. Maybe so but a player's value isn't going to reflect the player he was during his best stretch. His whole body of work will be considered and it doesn't look very appealing. Trading him now is just a huge mistake as no way will he return an asset like A. Nylander.
  5. Giveaways and takeaways are not reliable stats because the way they are recorded varies in different arenas. Hits and blocked shots have the same problem. Some arenas hand them out a little too liberally while some are far more stingier. I think these stats are somewhat useful to compare two players on the same team. Comparing two players on different teams especially in different conferences/division, these stats are simply not a good means to do so. Edit: I almost forgot to mention but there is a way to compare these stats between players playing in the same division. You only track these statistics for the away games. Provided that both players play in the same arenas for the same number of games, they are comparable and you remove the home arena inconsistency of recording stats. The point I want to emphasize is that there is a fine line between useful statistics and bad statistics and without appropriate context and filtering of inconsistencies, all these statistics lose all meaning and lead people to incorrect conclusions. And often when incorrect conclusions are made, the anti-stats crowd comes out and uses it as evidence that hockey is a game that cannot be evaluated by stats and this is just patently untrue. Blame human error for when stats get misrepresented or taken out of context. I am guessing the actual NHL teams have far more sophisticated resources at hand for accounting of all these discrepancies. Seeing as advanced stats is still in its infancy, teams might even be sitting on some new statistics that we might not get to see for several years.
  6. Considering they plan on bringing him back after 2 games regardless of performance I will say it undermines that effect.
  7. Excited about this kid. His biggest deficiency was his skating but he has come a long way in that regard. I am thinking he should be ready to play in the NHL next year and won't need time in the AHL.
  8. Firstly Marner's play in his own zone is better than Jake's. I watched him for years with the Knights and he was consistently one of the best players on the Knights defensively. Having watched a few games of him in the NHL, that hasn't changed. He is easily one of the better forwards for Toronto defensively. At the moment Jake isn't exceptional defensively, his underlying stats looked good last year because he was sheltered as a rookie. But that's fine, most players develop their defensive games as they grow older. This is a forum is it not? Then you should expect to see some dissension. If we all agreed on everything there would be no point coming here at all. If you can't deal with one person's opinion there are other remedies you can take, like blocking that person's posts. Flaming them so that they will stop though is against board rules and accomplishes nothing. Ehlers and Nylander are far better players than Jake is currently. It is unlikely that changes in the future. Is there a chance? Sure. Would they be doing better here than Jake is? I would bet my house on it. This organization has screwed with the development of Virtanen, that doesn't mean the same would have occurred with either Nylander or Ehlers. Both of them were far more ready to play in the NHL last year than Virtanen was. Actually it seems like the opposite to me, whenever anyone decides to compare Jake with one his peers whether it be Nylander, Ehlers, Larkin, Ritchie etc, people get their panties in a bunch and start flipping $&!# because they can't handle any criticism towards the local kid. But how exactly do we judge Virtanen's performances without some form of benchmark?
  9. That was the gist of it. He pretty much questioned the work ethic and commitment level and if Tomlinson is saying it then there must a kernel of truth to it. I think at this time its hard to criticize Willie for benching him, they are trying to push him to him start taking his career seriously. He needs to seize his opportunities and not rely on them coming his way. Its tough love, lets hope its something Jake responds to.
  10. What does that have to do with what he posted? @The 5th Line has been one of the most vocal of Jake's critics since he was drafted, and I remember him being flamed hard for his opinion. With the passage of time he has been proven right and I am sure that gives him no satisfaction as a Canucks fan but its hard to fault him for feeling vindicated considering how much criticism and personal attacks he took for expressing a mere opinion. I can say that if I were in his position I would be throwing it in the face of the people who threw insults but he has refrained from doing that. Jake is running himself out of town, right down to Utica. Showed up to camp not in shape then criticized the coach publicly for not giving him minutes. I don't know if you heard Tomlinson on the pre-game show a few days ago talking about Jake's lack of commitment, basically he is the last guy to get on the ice and the first to get off. He is lucky Willie is on thin ice, otherwise any other coach would have ripped him a new one one in the media for not showing enough on or off the ice to deserve any more playing time.
  11. Putting this all on Aquaman absolves those who he has hired to carry out his vision. Why are JB and especially Linden going along with it? Just to collect a paycheck at the end of the month? If so they are doing so by deceiving the fans by claiming that Aquaman does not interfere in the running of this team.
  12. There are many guys who play in summer leagues. Eichel and Vesey were in a league this summer with guys from major junior, college hockey and a few NHLers. Most NHL clubs respect a player's right to train the way they want in the off-season. Of course you are also expected to be a professional, not put yourself in dangerous situations and show up to camp in shape.
  13. Just to make it clear my blame was on the training staff. They had access to him 5 days a week for the entire summer. How exactly did they fail to get him in shape for the season? This is the second player now who is going through this.
  14. http://vancouversun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/surprise-surprise-canucks-top-10-well-what-do-ya-know How exactly was the staff unable to prepare him for the season when he showed up 5 days a week?
  15. Ray Ferraro's analysis of Jake seemed bang on to me. Every time he gets the puck he just get rids of it in a hurry. He is afraid of holding onto the puck and doesn't have the confidence to make plays. Ferraro seems to think players in this situation don't belong in the NHL and I have to say I agree. Let him go to Utica, and work his way back onto the roster. It will give him the confidence when he returns that he truly belongs in the NHL and can make a difference. At this point he is just treading water, and its rather frustrating to watch as the Canucks desperately need him to be a core piece for this franchise.
  16. He never should have been on the team last year. IMO unless a teenager can show that he is above and beyond better than the competition, he should not be on the team. Virtanen just barely made the team last year and they should have given him his 9 games and sent him back to a team that was hosting the Memorial Cup and would have given him ample playing minutes. Instead he got barely any minutes was even scratched a few times. He went into the WJC with low on confidence and that combined with the atrocious coaching led to a poor tournament. He managed to grind out the season and turn it around but we have yet to see the best of Jake Virtanen because he is consistently being put in a position that is way above his head. Going back to junior has never really harmed young players, bringing them in early before they are truly ready has been known to. Take the examples of Ryan Strome, Max Domi and Christian Dvorak. Going back to junior helped them considerably.
  17. I second this. Also there are instances when I go to a thread, type up a post then click the submit button, the "Saving..." comes up but it doesn't get posted. No matter how many times you click submit, it won't be posted. After refreshing the page and the entire post is gone. Usually I remember to copy my post but when I am drunk it takes me twice or even thrice as long to make the same post and when I forgot to copy it can get really frustrating.
  18. The first part of that post was for last year. I agree with you that its strange that you keep Virtanen up and sit him. The Comets could really use him and he will get plenty of ice time to put things together.
  19. A lot of the times rookies (CHL) in their 19 year old season who are ineligible to play in the AHL tend to sit out quite a few games at the start of the year. Teams sometimes stretch out their 9 games (ELC) or 40 games (UFA eligibility). So its not that unusual. If they start sitting him out instead of playing him the AHL this year I would be very concerned. Regardless I haven't been a fan of how Jake has been developed since being drafted.
  20. "I would rather get punched in May than knocked out in October"

Great sign but it can now be amended to...

"I would rather get punched in May than make an error that eliminates my team in October"

  21. Mackenzie's preseason list is out. Apparently according to scouts that Bob has spoken to Patrick would have slipped to the 5-10 range if he were eligible to be drafted this year. No wonder no team seems to be tanking this season.
