[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
Coconuts replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Some folks seem to get their bits in a twist over this. And while I get it, folks get riled up about their team, who can really blame him for it? It's not as if we've done much competitively throughout his tenure as a Canuck, why should he wait for opportunities that may never come? There's no guarantee we're going to be a playoff team sooner than later let alone a contender. I'd rather keep Bo over Miller but ideally I'd move on from both at this point and reset things with a younger group of players. Folks will froth at the mouth about wanting guys on the team who want to win but somehow Horvat potentially wanting to leave because he wants to win is a problem? Come on. I'm not saying that's you but I see it around here and it's silly. But I also don't believe the veteran part of this core will amount to much of anything, the focus should be about getting younger via trade and drafting and building a team that can grow together around Pettersson and Hughes. If Bo goes elsewhere I'll root for him, that's great. If Miller goes elsewhere I hope he has success too. Good offensive player who just doesn't fit the timeline. -
I mean, hasn't Pettersson already sat out once during contract negotiations? It's not as if he's the one who'll be haggling, he pays someone to do that. If Pettersson continues at his pace the rest of this season and into next I could see him getting closer to 10.5-11M. I personally see 10M as the low point. I also think it's probably more in the Canucks interest than Pettersson's to get a deal done sooner than later.
-
Depends entirely on what else is done. Pettersson has another year on his deal and is a pending RFA at that point. Lot of time for change between now and then. Plus, if Bo wants out that's Bo making a choice as much as it is management making a choice. Pettersson understands the business side of things.

[PGT] Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks | Jan. 24, 2023

More power to you, I don't consider a deliberately tanking Blackhawks franchise as much of a bar though. We'll see how the rest of the season goes. -
Probably, but whether he should actually get it from us or not depends on where we appear to be at closer to his deal being up. I didn't like the Miller deal as I don't think it lines up with our competitive timeline, well, that's one of the reasons. It could be similar with Kuzmenko, time will tell. Lot of things could happen between now and then. For all we know we could have a wing prospect step in and show he may be able to do Kuzmenko's job at a cheaper rate. Or we could sign someone, or a guy we bring in via trade could really impress. We don't know. But there's no guarantee Kuzmenko will be a long term piece here even if he continues to produce. It also depends on how our cap is allocated between now and then, and whether management has actually been able to address our D or not. Who knows how we'll do competitively either, we could go another two seasons missing the playoffs, or more. Or we could make them, we don't know.

I'm not expecting much tbh, if anything this retool will outlive JR's role on the team. Don't have a whole lot of confidence in Allvin thus far as he's looked to be more of a mouthpiece. But who knows what he actually does, we'll see. On the upside, if we're still treading water in a couple seasons we could just flip him later. Doesn't close the door on a Kuzmenko trade, just kicks it further down the road.
-
Meet the new management group, same direction as the old management. The difference being they've been so goddamn awful Horvat is likely on his way out and that they'll probably get a top 10 pick as a result. I'm so tired of this retooling crap, this organization loves to try and take shortcuts. Maybe it really is on ownership.
-
That's the risk that comes with drafting, but you've gotta roll the dice on players in order to have a chance to hit on picks. It's why both Anaheim and LA look to have bright futures, moreso if Anaheim somehow gets Bedard. I wish we'd rebuild, I genuinely don't believe this team will be doing anything meaningful any time soon. It's also why I keep advocating for a Miller trade, we're almost in that direction anyway. Horvat is almost certainly going, Boeser probably will too. I don't believe in the veteran part of this core, I don't. Miller will fritter away his remaining best years on a roster that won't do anything here, so will OEL. We don't have to ride out Miller, we'll likely just have to eat OEL. But we can live with eating one contract like that, not two. I'd love to build around Pettersson, Hughes, and the others who I view as the young core. Rock and a hard place, I think they'd be better off calling a spade a spade and shipping out their vets. But what we'll probably see is more of a mediocre, middling roster going forward if JR keeps doing more of what Benning was doing.
-
Give the Sens an owner or ownership group with some actual financial muscle and their future will look brighter than it currently does Gotta feel nice for longsuffering Sens fans to see a light at the end of the tunnel they've got some good young talent on that roster and they may finally get ownership that's willing to put money into the team

I'd rather have kept Dickinson and the 2nd over a 5-6D in Bear, and I think Bear's played well. They painted themselves into a corner with Dickinson by going out and blowing their cap wad on more forwards, they'd have been better off giving him more than a single season to show what he could do. Could have just bought him out at the end of this season and still had our 2nd.

Maybe? Who knows. But yeah, why wouldn't an agent try and sell a team on such a possibility when negotiating a deal? I didn't like the Miller deal, not interested in throwing big money and term at guys about to enter their 30's in most cases. Someone else can give him that. Yeah, that's an excellent point. The bracket for players like Pettersson and Hughes is absolutely going to jump. Kuzmenko's likely banking that as well, the bracket will jump for most point produces. It's the lower paid or middle range vets who typically feel the squeeze. Clearly I value picks more than you do. All picks are gambles let's be real, that being said the draft is still the best place to get top talent. I wouldn't trade a 1st for Kuzmenko given where we likely our in our competitive timeline. A team further along might. Second coming of Kuz? He's almost 27 and he's played half a season. I'd absolutely rather have a high end young talent in their early 20's, even if they put up half of what Kuzmenko has thus far at least there'd be more upside and longevity out of such a player. And again, picks can be flipped. Kuzmenko is found money, wouldn't you trade him for a top 4D? Could in a roundabout way if you trade a 1st garnered from a Kuzmenko trade for one. Alternatively, what if you hit on your pick? Bust, bust, bust. And yet folks covet D like Dobson out of Long Island who was drafted 12th, or Pulock who was drafted 15th. Or guys like Morrow, Romanov, Durzi and so on who were drafted in the 2nd round. Folks go on and on about wanting top 4D from other teams, or young RD from other teams, while simultaneously rooting for a team that almost never drafts D high.

Not just in the system, but potentially around the league. Give it 2-3 seasons and we'll have seen a significant cap jump, or so people keep saying. I still think someone would throw a larger contract at him if he made it to UFA though, GM's can't help themselves. I'd rather take a 1st or 1st+ over 2-3 seasons of Kuzmenko. He's angling for a long-term bag, it's just a matter of does he try and go for it now or does he angle for a larger payday by kicking the can down the road a little.
-
Given the most recent information in this thread it doesn't look like it'd need to be a better player than Kuzmenko in 3-4 years because he'll likely be looking for a longer, and probably larger deal by then. We'll see, but like Provost said they probably recognize that teams are bit more handcuffed capwise and they'll be able to capitalize on the cap jumping significantly sooner than later. I'd consider any deal involving a 1st too good to refuse personally, I'm pretty sure we could get that for Kuzmenko. Even if it's a 1st in the 17-25 range that gives us a change to grab a blue chip prospect who could potentially have a longer term impact on this franchise than Kuzmenko. Having an additional 1st would also give us the option of possibly trading up for example, or it could be moved to upgrade other areas of the roster. You know, like defense. Or we could just use it to draft a blue chip D in the latter half of the 1st round ourselves. I don't buy the argument that Pettersson would be devastated to lose a player he's played with for four months. What would really matter is what our other moves looked like and what the plan is going forward. Petey's future isn't going to be decided at the deadline as we have the draft, all summer, and next year's draft and summer to figure things out. And the following draft and summer when he's a pending RFA. Want to keep Petey happy? Build a competitive roster, you don't need to have Kuzmenko to do that, there are other ways of going about it. Plus, management needs to consider the future as a whole going forward, not just Pettersson.
-
It doesn't make sense for him to settle for a bridge. He'll be 27 early next month, he doesn't have the window to earn money on multiple deals the way younger guys breaking into the league do, he may be able to pick up another contract after this one but unless he's accepting a 2-3 year deal it'll probably pay him less than what he's primed to make on his next deal. If he's goes to UFA someone will throw the bag and term at him. If can play effectively with Pettersson he can more than likely play effectively with similar talent, he could be a scoring winger that helps put a team close to contention over the top and he'd be easy to fit in at his cap hit. He's a piece I could easily see the Leafs wanting for example, wasn't Dubas in the building last night? Tampa, Winnipeg, Boston, Dallas, NYR, Calgary, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Edmonton, Colorado, New Jersey, and maybe even Vegas are all teams I could see being very interested. Tampa, Boston, Colorado, Jersey, Carolina, Dallas and maybe Winnipeg are teams I would label as contenders, they'll likely all be looking at kingmaker type pieces. Calgary's been rumoured to be looking for a scoring forward this season and given the age of their primary players they probably need to win sooner than later. Vegas is Vegas, always interested. Edmonton probably feels the pressure to win with McDavid and they were in on him before he signed with us. Pittsburgh has the remainder of Crosby/Malkin/Letang's top years before the inevitable rebuild, there's a time limited window for one more cup. Rangers core forwards ain't getting younger either, similar window. Would make the most sense to sell him and I think what'll happen is we'll be getting an offer too good to refuse for Kuzmenko.

Let's see them do it against a team who isn't the 2022-2023 Chicago Blackhawks or a team of similar.. caliber. -

Yupppp If management has any sense they'll start selling sooner than later to at least solidify their position closer to the bottom Worst thing that could happen would be going on some sort of run and drafting like 12th
