[Buyout] Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Coconuts replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
For real though. One could argue that he contributed to last season's team being poor defensively, one could also argue that most D are going to look bad on a team that's porous defensively. No bones about it, we were pretty awful defensively for most of last season. Put him on a team with better systems, and on a team that's largely committed to defense as a whole and he'll likely look better. Prime Kesler couldn't have saved our season last season, not with goaltending like we had. -

Teams want to buy low on what could potentially be a top 4D on a team whose defense isn't trash, and on a team that didn't set some ugly records last season? I for one am shocked. He'd be a helluva third pairing D to have at a cost effective rate, you know he's probably gonna have a chip on his shoulder next season. -

I was kinda hoping we'd land him, this could absolutely pay off in a big way for Montreal if he can bounce back from his injuries -
I'd rather just keep the 11OA, we could get a stud future 1-2C there.

Sounds like we're more cagey regarding Bear now, good. https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1ssa3m9

I'm receptive to them walking away from Bear. Would rather look for someone who's more cost effective, an upgrade, or look to promote from within. https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1ssa3m9

That's good, he's good depth guy who could probably fill in as a cheaper 5-6D.

Wouldn't surprise me. I could see a team like Ottawa having interest in Graves, particularly if they do end up shipping DeBrincat out and don't take a bunch of cap back. Could maybe see Buffalo having interest too, the only D with term they have right now is Samuelsson. Power and Dahlin will need to be re-upped soon, both will be RFA's after next season. I think they can both play both sides unless I'm mistaken. Jokiharju will be an RFA after next season and Lyubushkin will be a UFA. Bryson and Stillman will also be RFA's. If Buffalo wants to tweak their D they have the flex to do so, even with the Dahlin and Power extensions incoming. Neither team is on Jersey's level but Buffalo showed last season that they're probably not too far away from being a playoff team if they can get their goals against down. Ottawa has a lot of young talent too and recently bolstered their D with Chychrun.

[Report] Travis Green joins Devils' coaching staff
Coconuts replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I read your argument but I'm not sure I'd consider him above average, but Green was also scapegoated to a degree. Bringing him back in the first place was one of Benning's last mistakes imo, he'd gotten stale. That being said, when Bruce came in and we went on a tear folks were quick to dump the failure at the feet of the coaching staff and give the players a pass, but some of the issues we saw under Green continued under Boudreau. It wasn't a tale of two seasons, if was largely the same roster. Same goes for this past season, I've seen folks scapegoat Bruce and proclaim Tocchet to be some sort of savior because the team had better results after he stepped in. The context there being that they let Bruce ride out the tougher stretch before Tocchet stepped in, the schedule was tamer down the stretch, they tried to set Tocchet up for success. I've no doubt Green did the best he could but I didn't think he was anything special. Pettersson and Hughes thrived under him but I've also made the argument in the past, more so in the context of prospect development, that Pettersson and Hughes are too naturally gifted for any coach to really screw up. They were both always going to have success regardless of who the coaching staff were imo. I see Green as an average coach who did the best he could with what he had, but yeah, the results also reflect the quality of the rosters he had to a degree. -
Pretty much. I keep reading about how he'd be a good fit and I'm just like, you know there are other teams out there looking for D right? Has nothing to do with me being a downer, it simply isn't a very impressive crop of UFA's, which means the higher end guys will be in demand and likely command more. Let's take a look at D who played 50+ games last season. For LD you're looking at Jack Johnson (36), Brian Dumoulin (31), Marc Staal (36), Niki Mikkola (27), Ian Cole (34), Ryan Graves (28), Carson Soucy (28), Shayne Gostisbehere (30), Erik Gustafsson (31), Dmitry Kulikov (32), Dmitry Orlov (31), Nick Holden (36), Alex Edler (37), Matt Irwin (35), OEL (31), Calvin De Haan (32), Jordan Oesterle (31), Nathan Beaulieu (30), and Gavin Bayreuther (29). Some of these guys may not be back at all because of age, guys in this bracket include Jack Johnson, Marc Staal, Ian Cole, Nick Holden, Alex Edler, and Matt Irwin. Guys I've mentioned who I'd consider as being able to slot into one's top 4 are Ryan Graves, Brian Dumoulin, Shayne Gostisbehere, Dmitry Orlov, and maybe Carson Soucy and OEL. Six guys. Break it down further to the youngest of these six and you're looking at Soucy and Graves, both of whom are 28. Age matters because there's a better chance of getting longer term value from younger UFA's. If we look at RD UFA's who played 50 games or more the pickings are slimmer. Some of them are D who I've listed but who are listed as both LD and RD. They include Scott Mayfield (30), Troy Stecher (29), Justin Holl (29), Matt Dumba (28), Ian Cole (34), Connor Clifton (28), Carson Soucy (28), Shayne Gostisbehere (30), Kevin Shattenkirk (34), Travis Hamonic (32), Radko Gudas (33), Luke Schenn (33), John Klingberg (30), Dmitry Kulikov (32), Erik Johnson (35), Matt Irwin (35), Calvin De Haan (32), Jordan Oesterle (31), Nathan Beaulieu (30), and Gavin Bayreuther (29). Many of the same names. As with the LD some of these guys may not be back at all. For RD I could see that being maybe Kevin Shattenkirk and Erik Johnson. So for top 4 guys I'm looking at maybe Ryan Graves, Brian Dumoulin, Shayne Gostisbehere, Dmitry Orlov, Carson Soucy, OEL, Scott Mayfield, Matt Dumba, and John Klingberg. Mayfield, Soucy, and Graves are guys I keep seeing mentioned but if they make it to UFA they're likely going to be in demand. Also worth noting is that some players may not make it to UFA at all. Isles may retain Mayfield, Kraken may retain Soucy.

[Proposal] Would You Do This 3-Way?
Coconuts replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
No, I don't think Colorado would either though Byram is a known quantity and given the age of their top guys they're built to compete now, the 11OA isn't going to help their roster now, Byram likely sees a larger role going forward -
