There's a fine line between trying to be competitive and having spaces open to bring prospects along. The line between whether a smattering of NHL minutes in the bigs and getting more ice time and a bigger role in the minors is also a blurry one. For example I've argued several times this season that players like Hoglander and Podkolzin would benefit more from larger roles, more ice time, and special teams roles in Abbotsford than playing smaller roles with less ice time in the NHL. If the idea is to develop top six players you've gotta give them rope, it's harder to do that when you're trying to win and the margin for error is smaller. Maybe if we were a more established team that had shown the ability to consistently make the playoffs that'd be one thing but we aren't there yet and haven't been for a while, teams like that can better afford to insulate younger players while bringing them along. We've also got a rather crowded forward group and I'd rather see offensive guys be put into positions where they can play offensively, there's no reason why guys like Raty and Klimovich can't learn the defensive side of the game in Abbotsford.

Not always about population but it's likely a factor the NHL looks at. There's a lot of money in Texas, likely wouldn't be too difficult to find a willing ownership group. I do think that the potential of attracting fans who aren't already hockey fans is part of what draws the NHL to markets. New fans are new revenue streams, and the NHL is in the business of trying to make money. They could try worse areas. You know it's likely only a matter of time before the league expands further. And hard to say, they obviously thought enough of Atlanta to give it a second chance in the first place.

Henrik and Bo were also former top prospects, top 10 pick kind of prospects. I've read about how hyped Raty was pre-draft but he looks like a player who still has a lot to learn on the ice to me, I'm simply of the preference that he stews. Same goes for Klimovich. I'd rather both players get closer to the point where they're simply too good to be kept in the AHL, they're also both very young players and there's really no rush imo. Hell, even Podkolzin looks like he could still benefit from AHL hockey. Just because they're top prospects doesn't mean they can't or shouldn't benefit from AHL time. This isn't to say you're one who'd prefer to push players into the bigs but it's not an uncommon sentiment around here. This rings even more true given our AHL affiliate actually looks to be a positive learning environment for our prospects now. No offense to Utica, I liked the setup we had there, but having control of Abbotsford allows us to lean more towards prioritizing prospect development. Maybe Raty ends up starting with the Canucks next season but I'll admittedly be a bit disappointed if he does.

That's a very subjective question. If you think so, great. I'd rather play him in a top six position in Abbotsford, it's not as if the coaching staff over there aren't qualified. If the idea is to groom him into being more than a bottom six player I'd rather play him in a top six role, he's not likely to get that in Vancouver sooner than later imo. I don't see the point in rushing younger players into the lineup just because you can, I'd rather let them cook. If he beats out players we've brought in to fill that gap that's one thing but I'd rather have a 3C who's not a rookie if the idea is to actually try and make the playoffs next season. Maybe, we'll see how he actually does.

Yup, if the idea is to actually competitive next season I also question the wisdom of having a rookie down the middle in your bottom six. If folks genuinely believe he's got top six upside I'd rather he continue polishing his game in the AHL, there's plenty he could learn in Abbotsford. Just because we've got a shiny new prospect doesn't mean we have to throw him into the lineup, he's only 20. I'd rather let prospects stew and have them potentially hit more than just their floor. Leave him in Abbotsford and play him in a top six role with all that it entails. I still wouldn't be rushing an extension. I'd rather wait and end up having to pay him a little more because he appears more than worth it than rush to sign a guy to a longer term 7M deal and have it be an overpayment. I've no issues with the team signing him to an extension in-season if it comes to that. I'd rather see a larger sample size of him actually playing as a Canuck before throwing anything resembling longer term at him.

A Hronek extension at 7M sooner than later doesn't exactly sound great imo, I'd rather go into next season and see what he actually does before throwing that at him. I think CDC's jumped the gun with Raty honestly, there seems to be this consensus that he'll be a suitable 3C next season and I just don't see it. He could likely use further time in Abbotsford. I think Boeser and Myers may be tougher to move out than people anticipate. Some folks seem to just assume Myers won't be putting bottom feeders on his 10 team NTC and I just don't see it. Why would he want to go somewhere he'd probably get lit up if he's looking to work towards his next deal? I think there's a chance we may actually trade Beauvillier, but I'm not as attached to him as some folks seem to be. He's a low risk acquisition for another team and therefore probably an easier cap piece to move than Boeser. If he doesn't work out he's a pending UFA, Boeser isn't, he also doesn't come in at 6.65M. If Graves is as good as people are hyping him up to be I think Jersey finds a way to keep him. Either that or he's very in demand and costs more than 4.8M, a top 4D with size who only costs you cap space would be very in demand via UFA. I've had Pettersson pegged at between 10-11M for a while but I wouldn't be shocked if he got more, I think it'll depend on what Matthews ends up getting in an extension and I wouldn't be surprised if Pettersson's camp waited to see what Toronto does. I could see the extension Matthews get raising the bar on what elite talent can ask for from a team. I think folks should prepare to potentially see him come in at higher than 11M. Matthews is already making 11.6M, you know that's going to jump up to likely more than MacKinnon is getting.

Are you implying that Raty isn't a surefire future 3C and that you shouldn't bet your house on it?

League pouring some water on the buzz, but that's fine, you never really know what they're up to Seattle was announced in 2018, still wouldn't be shocked to see something sooner than later, and by that I mean the next year or two Quebec has an arena ready to go, it'd be nice if they got a team first but from a business standpoint I can see why Atlanta or Houston would be more appealing https://twitter.com/andystrickland/status/1632735722951131136?s=20

Yup, tough to build a fanbase when the product is forever mediocre. It's why you've gotta give markets like Columbus credit considering how long they've been mediocre. It's also why it's nice to see Seattle having the success they're having in season two. Giving future expansion teams favourable conditions seems like a no brainer if the idea is to grow the game and solidify a franchise.

[discussion] options to clear cap space
Coconuts replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Agreed, particularly if they're out of it again or if they know he's going to cost them more than they want to give. But yeah, even if you don't get a 1st back at the draft or in the offseason you'll get a 2nd if he continues his production. He's a low commitment option for a team looking for additional depth. Wouldn't be surprised to see him circle back to Long Island when his contract is up honestly. -

That's a pretty good idea actually, frees up 4.1M and likely brings back positive assets if he continues to produce the way he has with Pettersson. I know folks are gonna argue that noooo, he fits really well with Petterson but hey, Pettersson looks like the kind of player who'll work well with anyone. Plus, that's why he has Kuzmenko as a running mate. He's already got his guy. Trade Beau and bump up one of Boeser, Garland, or Kravtsov. Wouldn't be remotely surprised to see us going into next season with Boeser still in our top six. If retaining 1M on Beau could get us a 1st I'd pull trigger and run, just need Petey to keep pumping up his numbers. -

5 seems farfetched, 6 would be nice We need the teams around us to win though, it's doubtful we're going to lose more than anyone beneath us It's Montreal, Philly, and St. Louis we're jockeying with for the 6th spot All they had to do was keep Martin up and send Delia down -

I'd rather them lose most of the rest of the way instead of trying to win games in garbage time. Players are gonna play and wanna win I get that, but get the coaching staff and management on the same page regarding roster decisions. But for whatever reason this franchise seems to push to go on meaningless winning stretches towards the end of lost seasons. It's frustrating. -

We'll see, but for today he makes those who dumped on potentially acquiring him look dumb. I believe he's got upside and that he'll progress into at least a good middle six player who is worth his deal. -

Hoping this is the case, on hand I understand trying to instill good habits but man.. they're shooting themselves in the foot by structuring their roster to win. -

Habs lost which sucks but at least Philly won -
An argument I've seen against Quebec is that putting a team in Quebec doesn't create "new" fans, more than likely existing hockey fans in that region already have a team they follow. This isn't to say there wouldn't be new Quebec fans but given the population of say.. Texas for example, you've got a much larger chance of bringing in new fans and thus new revenue. I do think Quebec will eventually get a team but I understand why the league would look elsewhere from a money standpoint.

NHL will chase the money regardless of how fans feel about it. One could argue it dilutes talent but it also leads to more hockey players coming up. Without the Coyotes for example it's unlikely Matthews would be a player. Same bit for guys like Sillinger out of Ohio. California hockey has boomed. Players won't all go far but having teams in markets does lead to more players playing.
