  1. Oh Mr. Miller, I've got a beer Light up the Leafs so all the Nucks fans can cheer
  2. Theoretically, if what Yang is talking about were to come to pass you'd be right. A chunk of that money would end up in the hands of people you'd rather it not. The problem I have with this post is the that it oversimplifies the "drug junkie", "alchy", "criminal", ect. A lot of people, especially those living in poverty, don't reach for drugs and alcohol because they're fun (though they can be) but to use them to escape things in their lives or numb pain. To escape the realities of poverty, mental illness (those who are homeless and living in poverty often suffer from mental illness and it's a contributing factor to their remaining homeless unless the get the appropriate help), trauma and a long list of other potential things. I encounter a lot of homeless people through my work, and I understand why a lot of them might reach for things to escape the realities of being homeless (stigma, people treating you as less than human, weather factors, safety factors, financial/medical/food factors). Those living with addiction often have underlying traumas, there are many contributing factors. Some of those things can likely be attributed to criminal behavior as well. Lot of people would steal food, ect to feed their families or themselves. Some people will do things to feed their families or pay bills. I realize it's a complex issue and there are all sorts of criminals with all sorts of motivations, but all not criminals and criminal acts are equal. Theoretically, having more money each month could act as a buffer for some against some of those things (alcohol, drugs, crime). Sure, there'd be many who would blow that money on drugs and whatnot, but what about those who'd use that money to try and get out of dark places? Having an extra grand as a buffer against extreme poverty would help a lot of folks, the vast majority of folks I know live paycheck to paycheck. One could argue prices would just rise, but prices are continually rising anyway. It's a complex, convoluted subject. As for "universal welfare state", if I were American I'd be for it. The US pisses away trillions each year via it's military budget, taking better care of their citizens as a country that could afford to do so seems like a no brainer. I often hear the "Why should I have to be for x, y and z for someone else" argument from people and my response usually runs along the lines of my caring about more than myself and my own. If I needed help I'd certainly want access to it, the same goes for others. Hell, I wish Canada would invest more in it's social programs. Mind you, this is all coming from a social services student and I've got a solid idea of what people think of social workers.
  3. This isn't the same kind of firing we've seen of late. Wonder how long it'll take for things to leak.
  4. She's been fighting health battles for years, life can be cruel sometimes. 61 is pretty young to go nowadays. R.I.P
  5. He's done a pretty decent job turning things around after the poor start they had. He certainly hasn't been a losing coach of late. Let's see what comes out in the wash.
  6. Be interesting to see what the explanation is, by all indications they've kept things pretty airtight. Dallas fans seem pretty caught off guard, I'm not hearing the usual "snowflake" bs.
  7. Agree or disagree, at the very least it sounds like the NHL is serious about doing something. What actually happens remains to be seen.
  8. Last night was good for us, tonight wasn't It's a tough division to get any separation in right now Gonna need a hot streak or for other Pacific teams to go cold
  9. It'd be nice is the Rags would beat Vegas too but idk if they'll be able to hold on to that lead. Edit: Geez, the Rangers shut em out
  10. 2/2 with the Sharks being put down. Here's hoping Buffalo can roll over the Oilers and Chicago can put knock off Arizona.
  11. He's typically been good for between 40-50 points the last five seasons and he's only 25, Galy's still got some value. Don't think he'd be a fit here though.
  12. If you don't find some wood to knock on I'm gonna be very upset
  13. Ooof, that hit on Makar.

      kingofsurrey

Just about turned him into Makaroni.......

  14. That's one awkward looking hit, could be bad for Makar and the Avs
  15. Wow, that was an awful showing by the refs. High scoring game too, damn. But two points it two points!
  16. Haha, of course he'd finally bump the slump against Buffalo
  17. Ref bull$&!# aside, giving up three in the second isn't good enough. Demko needs to be better if we're gonna win this one. It ain't all on him, but we're gonna need some more of those big saves we know he's capable of making. Buffalo's got some talent, if we don't take em seriously and play better in the third we'll lose.
  18. Embarrassing reffing Let whatever go on Petey but call us on that?
  19. Secondary scoring coming through for us today Finish the second strong and come out roaring in the third
  20. Nice to see Juolevi back on the scoresheet, he was playing well before whatever went on for him. Encouraging to see Gadj, Lind, and Brise adding points too along with the usual suspects.
  21. Do you have any strange holiday traditions?

We used to get a fake Christmas tree every year.  Most families would buy a real tree around Christmas, but not us.  We would go down to Kmart or Fred Meyer and buy our fake Christmas tree.  Then sell it at the yard sale in the Summer.  We were the only family I knew that bought a fake Christmas tree every year.

We siblings in the family loathe Brussels sprouts with a passion unequaled. Every big holiday dinner, and especially at Christmas, a huge bowl of them would arrive on the table. We each had to have two....so the dive into the bowl was on at dinner to get the smallest ones (usually lurking right in the very bottom) . One year, when the entire adult family was at home for Christmas, my sister and I noticed an exceptionally LARGE bag of the offending mini-cabbages in the fridge so while the parents were out, we strung a goodly number of them with thread and hung them on the Christmas tree to avoid having to eat them. My dad was the first to notice them as he sat down in his chair (he loathed them as well) and was laughing so hard he couldn't speak. So every year since then, a number of Brussels sprouts get threaded and hung on the tree in three different households. ::DB)::D

  22. Not a bad night round the league. Arizona lost and Edmonton finished off LA in regulation, I was worried LA would manage to force OT. I'd prefer LA to win but three points games won't help us. If Washington can put away Anaheim in regulation that'd be great.
