2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017

I am no GM or Pro scout, but I would build the team exactly like this. It just makes sense, and Demko would also be peaking by this time. -

The interviews are crucial. Anyone remember Ryan Pilon, WHL defender and possible 1st round draft pick who retired from the game. It must have become quite clear in the interview stage that he wasn't into the game anymore. -

He wasn't the Lone Ranger there! -

So you have something in the vicinity of $10M not even on the roster? Ericsson and Sutter aren't making the team? That's a lot of cap wasted! -

Can the Canucks just send him down to Utica already. He looks good, but the Comets could really use him right now. Surely Green will teach him just as much as WD will for the remainder of this season. Give the kid a chance to play in the finals and also nurse him back to full health. I would like the Canucks to send down every person they can. It's a bust for the Canucks now and they certainly don't want anymore points this year.

Nazzy you might find Gaunce in Las Vegas unfortunately. The Canucks will lose someone, he has a high chance of being selected -
If they didnt love him before they sure as hell do now! It just makes you smile!

Pretty sad day, but all careers finish at some point. Alex Burrows' career with the Canucks was a pleasure to watch. I love the underdog who has to scrap to get what they want. Alex was all that and more. How cool is it when you sit back a little and think about all of the awesome things Alex did on and off the ice and how much joy he brought to so many of us. It is easy for me to cheer for Alex as we share the same last name and my birth date is the 14th. So it was no wonder he was my favorite player. I wish him all the best in Ottawa.

I 100% agree with you here and have said it for a while now. I think Liljegren would be a great pick. Another awesome defender would be perfect With the usual scenario of defenders taking longer to mature the Canucks would have so many players being ready at the same time. I would like to see another good defender picked up this year and then load up on skilled forwards from next year on wards. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that Benning has taken meat and potato's guys, I cant disagree with that statement entirely, but a 200 foot player is what you need as the foundation of the team. If you dont have players who play responsibly and with heart then you are destined to have a team that is inconsistent. One night they can be brilliant but other nights if it doesnt go well its a shambles. I see that Benning is looking to build a playoff caliber team. I think another 2-3 years patience and we just may see what many of us have been hoping for.... The team lacks top quality brilliance in attack, but I think thats the last piece that should be added. Kind of like a cake if you will. The goalie and defenders are the cake, 200 foot players make up the buttercream to cover the cake and the high end flashy attackers are the sparkles and candy on top. -

I couldn't agree with you more. Ive already stated I think the Canucks should take Liljegren if given the opportunity. Continuing to build from the net out is a bit painful in the short term but eventually us Canucks fans are going to be ecstatic with the team. Patience as a fan is the key -
I love it on this site, I came here expecting to learn something about Brock Boeser and how he is performing but I get an English lesson instead. Wonderful stuff. Well played gents.

You can never have too many GOOD d men. If I recall correctly wasn't Taylor Hall traded for a pretty good d man? Its only my opinion but 1 more quality defender would set the team up for a decade and then they can load up on highly skilled forwards. I think they have enough big bodies in the forwards they lack fast highly skilled players which seem to develop a bit faster than defenders, so if the Canucks could get a little luck they could draft some of those necessary skilled forwards over the next few years and with a little patience from the fan base , the team could be something special in 4-5 years.
-
I wouldn't mind if they added timothy liljegren At the draft. That would really be building from the net out.

Who???? Apparently there is a thread about him somewhere but it seems to have been misplaced

I cannot very well turn around in a few years time and jump on the bandwagon one way or another without stating my thoughts. I agree with both of you. I would have been content with management saving more cap space and waiting until next year. I just think the term is too long and I hate NMC. I can understand then for someone like the Sedins who are one club players but they really affect the way you do business going forward, look at the mess Benning inherited! At the end of this coming season he will have cleaned house with only the Sedin and Edler contracts which I think are pretty good deals. Now adding this one has muddied the waters again, so to speak.
-
I think there is a fair bit wrong with his whole post to be honest. I have stated many times over that I will hold any judgement on Benning until the beginning of the 17/18 season. If you look back at the roster assembled when Benning started , it was fully of contracts that were highly restrictive, the prospect pool was pretty shallow, some of the core players were starting to get on the wrong side of thirty and he was hard up against the cap ceiling. Through some unpleasant trades and necessary signings he has managed to get younger and stock the prospect pool to a level you can actually swim in. I reserve my judgement for another 15 months as by that time the team will be the one he wanted to assemble, and has worked bloody hard to do so. The restrictive contracts will be gone, he will only be carrying the Sedins and Edlers "legacy" contracts (which i think are actually very good), should have plenty of cap to work with after Burrows, Miller and Higgins contracts have expired. If the team set up for that year does not perform then its on Benning and I will express my thoughts, but until that time I am enjoying the ride. I am hoping for a team that makes hockey fun to watch again, this transition on ice has been disappointing, but I like the process to get to where the team needs to be.

Please no......I can only handle one Desi..........he makes my head hurt enough
-
Yes you look at that draft and see Damon Severson selected two picks after Mallet and think how good would he look on the Canucks blue line right about now. Certainly what the Canucks need. Only saving grace is Benning being able to shift out Mallet and turn him into Pedan, alright it cost a bit more but it's better than the dead weight that Mallet proposed.

I hazard a guess there will be a large number of posters blowing up next year when Demko finds the transition into the pro ranks pretty fierce. I'm predicting a few "bust" calls and some "the sky is falling" posts. I base that on some of the........ trade Miller.now ....how long till Demko is number 1 ........and Demko will be the starter for the Canucks by the end of next season posts. i encourage the positive outlook, but many CDCers are setting themselves up for heartbreak as Demko, much like every young goalie prospect , has a steep learning curve in front of him i personally am really looking forward to following his career and I hope it's a long illustrious one and as a Canucks fan, it's only ever in a Canucks jersey. Exciting times ahead for this young man......and us fans

If Alex does finish up it will be sad for me as my last name is Burrows, and my birthday is the 14th. I love the energy and passion that Alex has displayed over the years and feel it is something that will be hard to replace or replicate. I love an underdog. As much as everyone loved Bure, I loved Gino. Everyone loves the Sedins, I love Alex. Players come and go on teams, its the way things are, but as a fan you still become attached to those players and some mean more to you than others. Alex is one of those that I will miss.

Any how back to Brock Boeser he is a good one.Seems to have that winning attitude. I wish him every success.

I have a hard time understanding why so many people want to trade Edler. The Canucks have been brutal on the backend this season and its been compounded with the loss of Edler. The Canucks need to add to the blue line not subtract. You can't take all the vets away otherwise we will just see more of what has been dished up the last month. We all say "it must suck to be an Oilers fan", now I'm hoping us Canucks fans aren't being ridiculed in the same way I have said before that i think Drouin would be a fantastic addition to the team as i think he will be a great player and just needs a fresh start, its obvious that the situation in Tampa is untenable, but not at the expense that some are suggesting. Especially not Edler who provides the Canucks only real current offence from the blue line.
