Appreciate your positive outlook, Alf. I didn’t read his conclusion as a knock on Hronek. Seems like a balanced take, that his defence was better than expected, and breakouts were less dynamic than expected (specifically passing when rushed, and without support from forwards). Overall, he sees him carrying a second pair, and being a core player for years.
-
Agreed. Harman Dayal reviewed his tape, and wrote an in depth article about him for the Athletic in March. here’s the conclusion: Hronek profiles as a jack-of-all-trades two-way defenceman. He wasn’t quite as dynamic leading breakouts as I anticipated but was far more reliable defensively than I expected, especially now that his matchups and minutes have been scaled more reasonably. He checks the boxes of a quality No. 3 defenceman to me — somebody who can either caddy a legitimate No. 1 like Hughes or be an effective driver on his own pair, provided he has a competent partner. Regardless of how he’s deployed, Hronek is far and away better than any right-shot defencemen the Canucks have employed this season and should be a core player for some time.

True, and his interview was 6 months ago, not accounting for their back half performance. FTR - I’m also expecting more from those two…just wondering if we can learn more about their plans from the interview, given how he telegraphed the OEL buyout this Summer
-
When JR refers to underperforming players that could be bought out next year, would the obvious candidates be Boeser/Garland? Probably too early to consider, but interesting that he has buyout targets on his radar a year in advance. Wonder if that puts any real pressure on those players…
-
Agreed. There’s no need to diminish that years success to support a purely negative narrative. That was a bright spot for our core players, and a preview of how they can be successful in the playoffs

Thanks for reposting this. He actually telegraphs buyouts this Summer and next season as well. some key takeaways: we’re bringing in 25/26 year old players focus on developing them as part of a 3 year plan we might bring in vets at FA, but won’t trade a first for an older guy cap space is key to add players Barring trades, he was confident we could create cap space via buyout this Summer we have lots of young players, which is a good place to be We don’t have enough prospects, but are working on that a year from now the cap will go up $4-5M, which will loosen things up (opening up trades) some contracts will expire, and we may buyout other players who are underperforming (but hopefully they turn it around)

[Proposal] Trade with PIT and finish off roster
Ted Lasso replied to BigTramFan's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
So Pittsburgh will miss Guentzel to start the season…does that open up any trades for a RW? Garland for Granlund has been discussed…maybe there’s a 3way trade available for SJS, PITT and VAN involving some combination of Karlsson Lebanc Myers Granlund Ruuta Garland/Beauvillier/Boeser @Elias Pettersson, @BigTramFan what do you think? -
[Rumour] Van & Columbus trade rumor

Lol. Those fan quotes look manufactured AF. I’m a little disappointed in myself for opening that link. -
Mid-Summer power rankings have us at 13th in the West. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/nhl-power-rankings-which-teams-are-on-the-rise-at-the-mid-summer-mark/ Using their order, here is an attempted tier list for the division: tier 1 - contenders Colorado Vegas Edmonton tier 2 - playoff calibre (trending up, fairly complete roster) Dallas LA Seattle tier 3 - playoff hopeful (trending flat, missing an important piece, like 1C) Minnesota Nashville tier 4 - teams in flux (decent rosters, but key players want out) Calgary Winnipeg tier 5 - not close to the playoffs St. Louis Arizona tier 5 - rebuilding Anaheim Chicago San Jose On paper, I can see us hanging with Seattle at our best, and possibly taking 3rd in the Pacific. More realistically, we should be competitive in tier 3, while watching the rearview for the Jets or Flames to turn things around faster than expected. Knowing management is committed to the playoffs, I voted for 7th.

Yeah, he was billed as a burner with great defence, and untapped offence. Excited to see him at full speed this season, and curious which line he finds a home on…

I’d rather have Miller

…and back to the topic, here’s what the article said about Blueger: Ultimately, Teddy Blueger is a target I really liked as well, and considering the cheap one-year deal he signed, I’m a big fan of that signing for the Canucks. Blueger might not be a true 3C on a good team, but you would have to overpay to land a real, high-end 3C.

No, he’s one of the remaining free agents. Here’s part of a recent Athletic Mailbag article about him: You and Drance were banging the drum for Pius Suter before free agency started. Yet it seems no NHL teams see what you saw. What do you think was the gap in your evaluation? — Vy T. There are a few factors to consider. For starters, just because a player hasn’t been signed yet doesn’t mean teams perceive them as lacking NHL value. Matt Dumba, Tomas Tatar and Nick Ritchie are still on the market and all of them are useful players. Evan Rodrigues is an example of a player who ended up being a mid-September signing last year despite being a really handy middle-six player. Often when a player is holding out, it’s because there’s a significant gap between how much the player believes he should be paid and how much teams are actually offering. It’s understandable why Suter might be in that boat. Suter had 15 goals and 36 points in 2021-22 and 27 points in 55 games (a 40-point pace) during the shortened 2020-21 season, but is coming off a down year where he notched just 24 points in 79 games (although 14 of them were goals). Suter probably wants to be paid according to his overall body of work which suggests he’s a top-nine player. You have to remember that Suter’s coming off $3.25 million AAV from the last time he hit free agency — he probably doesn’t want to concede too much on salary. Teams, meanwhile, could be making offers based on his significantly lower production from last year, especially since he only has three total seasons of NHL experience. There’s also probably a gap between how we viewed his defensive value compared to some teams. From our perspective, his defensive metrics looked solid and Detroit trusted him as a regular penalty killer, but Suter doesn’t have the prototypical size of a checking pivot (he’s listed at 5-foot-11 and 174 pounds) so it’s easy to see how teams might not see a lot of defensive value.

Good points. Wonder if we see him take over PDG’s spot one the 2nd line, or back with Petey and Kuz? He’s an ideal matchup winger, with the speed to check McDavid, so maybe he ends up on whatever line is used for matchups (2nd or even 3rd)?

(SPECULATION) Nux interested in UFA D Matt Dumba

Believe we have two contract spots open, and a few tricks up our sleeve to fit another small salary into our roster -
[Signing] Senators sign Vladimir Tarasenko
Ted Lasso replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
This is an uncommon take, but I agree we’re a playoff team (top 3 would be great). This roster has offence to spare, and could easily win another 8-10 games with a healthy Demko plus a league-average defence and PK. The early season blown leads cost us confidence, and dug us a big hole early. I expect a better start this year. -
Agree with you on this. Consistent details can contribute to an identity. Would love to see a consistent anthem singer, and better PP music. No more trumpets please.
-
Agree here. Prefer the tempo remain unchanged, and any personal touches be kept classy and discrete. The long vibratos (e.g. Jugpreet) are cringe for me…and make it seem like the anthem is about them vs. Canada / national pride. This isn’t your audition on a reality show.

This player really stood out in a good way to me earlier in the playoffs. Great contract for what he brings -
