[proposal] Vancouver - Buffalo
Ted Lasso replied to Ted Lasso's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yeah, the Athletic reporter suggested they could use an experienced winger to replace Quinn, who’s out with an Achilles tear. it’s also been suggested here that Beauvillier would make more sense to Buffalo, given Garlands term -

If Lyubushkin is made redundant adding Johnson and Clifton, trading him for Beauvillier costs a net difference of $1.4M, with the shortest possible term. For Buffalo, this is cap reallocation / hockey trade, that leaves them with ~$5M to address defence -

Yes, they rely heavily on offence. All the more reason to reinforce their top 6 wingers while Quinn is out for 2+ months. Better to invest in a strong start to the season vs gamble on a depleted offence and already weak defence. He could also be out longer, or re-injure it. It’s a major injury. In 2-3 months they can re-evaluate, based on what’s working well in their top 6, then make additional moves as needed. There will likely be other injuries and underperforming players by then also. Which 40+ point, experienced wingers do you see passing through waivers? For UFAs, which experienced right wingers would they target? Kane? Tarasenko? Tatar? Hornquist? Josh Bailey? All 31+, with their best years behind them. Harder to believe other teams are going to give us good trade prices in June/July….need to wait for a few more dominos to fall, or lower our own prices to facilitate a trade. -

While he mentions the younger players as options, Fairburn thinks another experienced (scoring RW) winger to replace Quinn is their biggest remaining need. That’s enough for me to see them as a potential destination for Garland or Beauvillier. -
Good point, acknowledging it is promising. Will be interesting to see if he comes in a bit lighter, and how the training translates to his play.

[PROPOSAL] Conor Garland to Calgary (Revised)
Ted Lasso replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Great foundation for a trade, sending a surplus winger for a veteran 3C on a shorter deal. -
That’s great news that he has a new trainer. Can’t do the same thing and expect different results

[article] Beauvillier a good option at center? (2019)

Doesn’t the shutdown line need to match the minutes of the oppositions top line 5v5? -

Yep fair Same here - that would be priority one. Suter is described as a solid two-way C, despite his size. Wonder if he's still an option... -

What if Joshua was flanked by two defensive wingers like Pearson and Mikheyev? -

Agreed on Joshua. He has the speed, strength and defensive acumen suited to 3C -
https://eyesonisles.com/2019/08/17/new-york-islanders-anthony-beauvillier-good-option-at-center/ Interesting look at Beau as a candidate for 3C with the Isles 4 years ago: Playing center isn’t anything new for Beauvillier. He played down the middle his entire junior career. And as he told NHL.com’s Brian Compton in 2017, it’s his preferred position. So can Beau replace Valtteri Filppula? Just looking at Filppula’s base stats it’s entirely possible for Beau to fill Fillpula’s spot. Filppula scored 17 goals and 14 assists for 31 points. Beau scored 18 goals and ten assists for 28 points. Things start to break down for Beau the second you go beyond his production. Filppula put up 31 points while playing primarily in the defensive zone with 57.7 percent of his shifts starting in the defensive zone. Beau was the opposite with 58.1 percent of his shifts starting in the offensive zone. Then there are Beauvillier’s faceoff numbers. Over his three-year NHL career, he’s averaged 42.5 percent in the faceoff dot. That’s not great, but Filppula held a 42.3 percent efficiency last season. To be fair to Filppula, Beau only took 56 faceoffs last season and averaged 45.6 percent. It’s possible Beau can be better on the dot or at the very least a like-for-like replacement with Filppula. Looking at his numbers it seems that Beau can at least match what Filppula brought to the table. At least when it comes to his offensive production.

[Report/Rumour] Elias Pettersson Contract Talks
Ted Lasso replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Petey seemed happy they signed Hronek from their post-season availability together. He also can’t be displeased with them making their 1st round pick, and adding reasonable PK pieces in UFA this year. They are definitely showing him they want to make the playoffs this season… -
What was this post, @-Vintage Canuck-?
-
@Western Red don’t think he’ll be ready, or don’t think that 3rd line would work? Admittedly Suter is underwhelming at 3C, but Pearson and Mikheyev are solid defensive forwards that can also score.
-
Seems like he was signed to be our 7th D, so the kids can develop in Abby vs sitting in the pressbox
-
I’d like to see one more physical shutdown RD added to audition with Hughes (eg Peeke, Lyubushkin, Korczak), bumping Cole and Soucy down to 2LD and 3LD. Irwin as our 7th allows the young prospects to cook for another year together, and only come up if there are multiple injuries at once. Either way, Abby’s defence is going to be stacked next year.. Wolanin - Juulsen Hirose - McWard Brisebois - Woo Rathbone - Johansson Nychuk - Kannok Liepert
-
Agreed on the captaincy. Miller is also on record endorsing Hughes for Captain, and specifically praised how he’s become more vocal in the room. Can also see a scenario where Miller didn’t see eye to eye with Bo. After the rough start, there was the game that the two of them (and Pearson) all got into fights. Seemed like that was three of the bigger vets/leaders working together to spark the team. Wonder what happened after that… Maybe Miller was frustrated with Bo playing for himself / not standing up for teammates? Perhaps we’ll learn more after some time has passed.
-
If he’s back to game shape, would like to see him form a new matchup 3rd line: Pearson - Suter - Mikheyev Thats a 3rd line that can contain and contribute some offence
-
Happy with this signing, but hoping we find room for Pius Suter, and bump Blueger down to 4C. Suter has more potential to backfill the top 6 in case of injuries, and injects more offence into the bottom six.

Kuz - Petey - Beau Capitalize on proven chemistry, with Kuz & Petey dominating possession, and Beau complimenting with speed, forechecking and finishing ability. Beau will be highly motivated in a career year, and should optimize his asset value on this line for a (potential) future trade. Högs - Miller - Boeser Recapture chemistry from the bubble year while relieving this line from matchup duty. JTM brings his improved two-way acumen to be the defensive conscience on this line. Högs plays the role of skilled pest, and Boeser gets a second chance at 30g with two excellent passers. Pearson* - Suter* - Mikheyev *Assuming Pearson is healthy, flank our smaller two way C with our biggest and best defensive wingers, forming our new matchup line. Suter provides top 6C insurance, plus more skill to the 3C role until our prospects like Räty or Sasson are ready to take over. PDG - Blueger - Joshua Tocchet’s two favourite wall guys provide a strong north/south game with our new defensive center, forming a secondary matchup/energy line. If Pearson needs more time to get in game shape, PDG takes his place on third line, with Åman drawing in on the fourth. Studnicka Capitalizing on waiver eligibility, Åman and Podkolzin start the year in Abby, building confidence and chemistry with our growing pool of prospects. Studnicka provides flexibility to play center or wing, and will be hungry to earn a spot, and his next contract. bolded are ‘forward pairs,’ that largely remain together * sign Pius Suter to a 1 year, $1.5M deal —————————— Hughes - Lyubushkin** (aka Thuggy Bear) The Russian Bear is a 6’2, 200+lb RHD, known for sound defence and big open ice hits. He is a purely defensive dman that has played well against top lines while with Arizona. To be clear, he is a bottom pair calibre dman, auditioning for the complimentary ‘Hughes caddy’ role. Cole - Hronek Cole provides the size (225 lbs), physicality, and shutdown ability to the second pairing. With the most legitimate top 4 experience of our remaining left side Dmen, Cole helps get the most out of Hronek in his first full year as a Canuck, while taking over OEL’s minutes. Soucy - Myers Standing at a combined 13’1”, this has to be one of the biggest D pairs in the NHL. Soucy’s strengths are denying zone entries, strong 1/1 coverage, and throwing big hits. He can hold down the d-zone when Myers joins the rush. Myers should effectively shut down the oppositions bottom 6 forwards in a reduced role. Irwin Likely signed for this purpose, Irwin allows our younger d prospects the best chance to develop in Abby. ** trade Garland + 2024 3rd to Buffalo for Lyubushkin (and $2.2Mcap space) —————————————— Demko Martin As has been suggested, Silovs comes up for longer stretches when needed. —————————————— PP1 Kuz Boeser - Miller - Petey Hughes Help Boeser regain his form by moving him to PP1, possibly the bumper spot, or the left point. Petey’s shot from the right, Hughes walking the line, Kuz around the net, and Miller dropping blind passes…what could go wrong? PP2 Högs Mikheyev - Suter - Beau Hronek Suter provides a modest upgrade from Dries on the 2nd unit. Högs sticks around the net, Mikheyev provides a right shot option, while Hronek mans the point (hopefully showcasing his bomb with a fully recovered shoulder). —————————————— PK1 Suter - Mikheyev Cole - Hronek Our first PK unit leverages chemistry from our 3rd line ‘forward pair,’ and 2nd D pair, where they are building reps together in match up / shutdown capacities. PK2 Pearson - Blueger Soucy - Myers Our next best defensive forwards relieve Petey and Miller from substantial PK responsibilities. As with PK1, this unit borrows chemistry from an existing (3rd) d pairing, who are primarily deployed for shutdown duties. PK3 (last shift of the PK) Miller - Petey Hughes - Hronek Miller and Petey built some great short handed chemistry at the end of the season. Would love to see what these core 4 can do against the opposition’s second PP unit. —————————————— Overload (delayed penalties / last shift of the period) Kuz - Miller - Petey Hronek - Hughes Damn. That is all.
