  1. If he proves he can be a steady partner for Hughes, than he’s earned a raise IMO. Especially if we’re locking him up for a couple UFA years. Anyways, his contract isn’t the point of the thread.
  2. right - his no-trade list. Interesting if he'd use it to try and strategically block a trade at all vs. limit destinations that aren't good for his family.
  3. That's a great solution that keeps OEL on the second pair while adding a big shutdown D on the bottom pair. I also like Kevin Bahl from NJD (pending RFA).
  4. Hughes has definitely shown he can be successful with almost any partner. Would love to get a steady one for him for at least a couple of years.
  5. Fair enough re. Juulsen. Gavrikov - Hronek sounds great, just not sure about OEL on the third pair. I guess we could look at that as a strength.
  6. Have you seen the available UFAs for RHD? I'll bet Myers nets a return after his bonus is repaid. The team that gets him will be able to flip him at the deadline as well.
  7. Yeah, you're probably right. But if Hughes likes playing with him, and we're buying a couple years of his UFA, might be a nice show of confidence to pay him $1M+.
  8. RT gave OEL a vote of confidence to return from this injury with improved performance. If we keep him, does it make sense to sign a UFA like Gavrikov? Is it possible we have the talent internally to ice an improved D corps? Here’s what that scenario could look like: re-sign RFA Juulsen to 3 x $1.25M At the draft (if we haven’t reached a deal) trade Bear for a 2023 pick July 1st, trade Myers for a 2024 pick Hughes - Juulsen OEL - Hronek Rathbone - Johansson ———————————- Wolanin - Burroughs Brisebois - Woo Wolanin and Burroughs have looked good enough to be NHL regulars, so that depth looks sufficient to survive 2-3 injuries in the top 6. That’s an entirely new, and younger right side from the start of this season. Hughes likes playing with Juulsen, who has a 1st round pedigree, and is entering his prime OEL gets his best D partner as a Canuck, and Foote and Gonchar to help find his game Rathbone looks improved and physically stronger, and pairs with FJ, a late bloomer at 23 Without Myers, we see an 89% reduction in chaos I’m almost convinced that could work, but think we’ll sign or trade for at least one more proven defensemen with size/shutdown ability. If our internal options prove themselves, we almost need to trade one out.
  9. Interesting…wonder what the reasoning is. The only thing I see changing on RD these past few weeks is hearing how Hughes likes playing with Juulsen. 25 yo shut down RH D with 1st round draft pedigree, size and physicality, whose development was slowed due to a significant eye injury. Is it possible he’s overcome the effects of that injury, and is back on track to becoming an NHL regular?
  10. Johansson sounds like he could compliment Hughes or OEL. Love that he has a point shot. SCOUTING REPORT Defends his position very well, both because of an active stick and a fairly projectable frame. Owns a hard shot from the point. Can log big minutes along the blueline, including important ice time in all game situations. Will need to add more bulk and strength in order to maximize his shutdown ability at the highest level. While he is mobile and polished, he is not an elite offensive rearguard (and must play within his own limitations). Long Range Potential:Quality, reliable and all-round defenseman with good upside.
  11. Good point. Hughes ability to pair well with anyone changes how we look at our top 4
  12. Yep. Full credit to Colliton, our depth D have been more than serviceable. Expect OEL to return improved, seeing a forward group that’s committed to team defence, and having RT hold him accountable.
  13. Appreciate that. Hope you’re right - at least one article this year identified him as having top 4 potential. Who do you think he’d pair well with?
  14. Interested to see how new leadership changes the culture to start next season…both the coaches and the Alternate Captains. Seems we have a far better culture heading into next season. Instead of players having fun under an affable coach who lets them run and gun (and could be gone at any moment), they’re learning systems that are decreasing GAA and improving the PK. They have a head coach that played the game with an edge, and keeps in great shape, asking the same of them. He gives them consistent accountability and praise, and expresses confidence in even the most frustrating players. The updated leadership group leads by example in two way effort. They stick up for each other and continue to improve their individual performances. To start this season, they had a lame duck coach, that wouldn’t go into the room after losses. Never liked that. They had a Captain that wasn’t resigning, while scoring a record number of goals, yet cutting his hits in half, and noticeably permitting cheap shots on his teammates.
  15. You really think he’ll walk into top 4 minutes?
