Fair enough. FTR, I liked the pick when it happened and still like it in hindsight. There are some twitter posts with OJ saying the coaches wanted him to have a physical and mental rest a few pages back in this thread, and Sami Salo also is quoted to Rick D that he was a healthy scratch for two games because he wasn't sharp and clear after the wjc. Now, I do always like to give players and coaches, management, etc. the benefit of the doubt and take what they say at face value, but what gets me a little with OJ is that he has shown to have an "I'm better than all these guys" kind of style with junior, training camp, etc. My concern is that he's still of the same mind, and that he tends to not face adversity too well yet. However, with him being scratched and his recent quotes that he's finding the games tough in Liiga, I take that as a good sign that he may be learning to humble himself a little and realize he won't be gifted any ice time.

The overreaction I was referring to is towards posters who discuss some of the things he needs to work on, i.e. concerns. It just seems like every time someone tries to talk about things like his ostensible overconfidence or sometimes lackadaisical play, they get hardcore flamed with overreactions. And, sure, reports are he's been good, but also at times not so good - hence being sat for physical and mental reasons.
-
Honestly, I think it's your post and others that are doing the overreacting. No one here is saying he's a bust but rather there are causes for concern. Just by someone saying this does not mean they think he's done as a prospect. Even players on the team like Virtanen and Hutton have causes for concern, but that doesn't mean they aren't good prospects and will still likely develop nicely. OJ is not an infallible prospect that has nothing to work on. Edit: my mistake, my post was half misdirected to you, as it's also for @kylecanuck.
-
But wasn't the report that the coaches felt like he needed a physical (I. E. Back from the wjc) and mental rest? My personal concern for OJ has nothing to do with his physical or hockey ability (his IQ is top-notch) but rather his mental perspective, and I think it's a fair concern. It's great to hear outright recently that he is finding games tough now and that he's welcoming it, because he has often in the past made it seem like he's too good for the competition - even tho he hasn't been proving it and outperforming his peers in the leagues he's played in (he's been good, but not too good). Imo he needs tough competition and a good dose of some humble pie. My hope is that he squashes my concern after being a healthy scratch, especially considering how young he still is with plenty of time to grow his mental game.
-
OK, thanks, because I was starting to question reality there for a minute

Isn't it possible to be in support of a prospect while having some concerns about their development?
-
Yeah, confidence is a good quality, but overconfidence or cockiness is a fine line to walk. My concern with that type of attitude is that I've known people who talk a good game, but when they face tough competition or are beaten they give up and pout. I'm not saying that's what he's doing, but that it could possibly be his personality. It happens, though, where sometimes a player has to be developed mentally as well. I'll say this: when he gets his chance to play in the best league in the world, where he believes he belongs, he better show that he does belong to play with the best.
-
I do think it's a good thing for his development. My concern with OJ has always been his mindset towards the game. He seems to have a "don't tell me what to do" kind of style, which imho is not a great sign, and for me it's a concern. On the ice when he gets beat he seems to give up a little. Off the ice when he's questioned he seems to give a little attitude. This is all perception on my part, obviously, and I hope I'm wrong, but I do hope that he learns from the adversity he's currently experiencing, because I thinks it's the right call to give him a little wakeup call. Edit: is it possible he has an entitlement issue?
-
I'm on your side with this. It's not the end of the road for him, it's just a small concern/hurdle that he will have to overcome. We will have to wait and see. He is still having a very good year, but I see no harm in talking about him being scratched and discussing it in that light. But it is CDC, and some innocuous comments can certainly trigger some strong reactions.
-
Can't we just have a Canucks prospects thread that is specifically for discussing all prospects and even the team? Sorry, but every time I visit a player prospect thread I instantly forget which player I clicked because the discussion is about everything but the specific player. (I'm not as upset as that probably comes across, FWIW.)

Thanks for the great EP updates o_O

This article made me laugh, especially the last sentence, ha! Harrison Mooney: If Seattle gets an NHL franchise, what should they call themselves? HARRISON MOONEYMore from Harrison Mooney The Las Vegas Golden Knights are the model expansion franchise — instantly competitive, with 30 wins in their first 44 games, good for first in the Western Conference and only two points off the league lead — so you can understand why the NHL would be eager to do the whole thing over again. Seattle appears to be next, and on Friday we learned that the group behind the renovation of the city’s KeyArena seems to think so as well. They recently registered more than three dozen Internet domain names, related to a baker’s dozen of possible team names for their expected expansion franchise. So what are the names being bandied about for the team that would become Vancouver’s closest geographic rival? As follows: • Seattle Cougars • Seattle Eagles • Seattle Emeralds • Seattle Evergreens • Seattle Firebirds • Seattle Kraken • Seattle Rainiers • Seattle Renegades • Seattle Sea Lions • Seattle Seals • Seattle Sockeyes • Seattle Totems • Seattle Whales At the risk of kicking off this geographic rivalry early, I’ve gotta say: they’re pretty much all terrible. The Emeralds and the Evergreens are geographically appropriate, but they’re not very intimidating. Gems and trees don’t tend to make for tough nicknames. The Totems I like, since it references Seattle’s hockey history, but the Sea Lions, Sockeyes or Seals? Orcas eat those, and Seattle will be reminded of that every time they play the Canucks if they pick any of the three. Same goes for the Eagles, frankly, which runs into the same problem as an idea that I had, the thematically appropriate Seattle Icehawks. No birds. Orcas have been known to hunt those too. Speaking of which, the Whales? Get real. That already seems too close to the Canucks, at least in terms of their logo. The Canucks sport orcas on their sweaters, which, as we all know, are whales. Seattle is already horning in on Vancouver’s territory by dint of installing a team so close, but taking on a similar nickname seems like a bridge too far. What’s their logo going to be? Something like this? The very original Seattle Whales. Uncool. Or maybe something like this one, already in use for Seattle’s new Major League Rugby team, the weakly named Sea Wolves? Sea Wolves. This one looks suspiciously like a Canucks/Seahawks mashup. I’m not feeling it at all. Here’s a suggestion: instead of aping the Canucks’ whale theme, why not send a warning shot Vancouver’s way by naming the Seattle franchise something that threatens orcas? The Seattle Sockeye Shortage. The Seattle Harpooners. The Seattle Climate Change. The Seattle Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Or — and this one is in keeping with the Seawolves and the Seahawks — the Seattle Seaworld. Although if you really want to troll Vancouver, I’ve got three words for you: the Seattle Grizzlies. Or maybe you ditch the whale theme altogether and look at something else with a local tie-in. Seattle has that big Amazon headquarters. How about the Seattle Amazons? After all, it’s very common to have a team named after warriors. In the NHL, there’s the Golden Knights. The NFL has the Vikings, Raiders and Buccaneers. The NBA has a Warriors. It’s a thing, and Amazons would fit. Of course, a male hockey team might balk at being named after a tribe of woman warriors, but honestly, that’s dumb. Plus, in the era of Time’s Up and Me Too, what better team name could there be for a hockey club in one of America’s most liberal cities, short of, maybe, the Seattle Reckoning? (I actually quite like The Reckoning as a nickname. Imagine: The Reckoning is coming to town this week. Or on Saturday, the Canucks will face The Reckoning. Very intimidating. Plus, as we’ve all seen recently, The Reckoning is particularly intimidating to men, which is what team nicknames in men’s sports are supposed to be. That opens the floor to other stuff the hockey community is afraid of. Black men who speak their mind, for instance. How about the Seattle Kneelers? Too far? That said, if I’m being honest, I do have a problem with The Reckoning (the team, not the movement) because I have a real hate-on for singular team names. The Wild, the Lightning, the Magic, the Jazz. (Basketball is particularly bad for this.) It’s annoying from a grammar perspective — the Wild is winning or the Wild are winning? — and it messes with the consistency of team nicknames from city to city. Most teams are doing the plural thing, which is just one of the reasons I also hate the Seattle Kraken, one of the thirteen above-mentioned suggestions. If you’re going to ruin the whole system, why not just go all the way and name your team the Seattle Hockey Club, or HC Seattle like half the teams in the MLS? (Worst case, you don’t even pick a side, like the Vancouver Whitecaps FC or the Seattle Sounders FC. It’s ridiculous in both cases, but more so for Seattle, which struggles with team names in general. In addition to the Seawolves, which isn’t a thing, unless you’re talking about the class of submarines — and with that dopey logo, Seattle clearly isn’t — their basketball team was called the SuperSonics, with a second capital S and no space. That’s almost as bad as the all-caps Ottawa REDBLACKS. But I digress.) MLS team names are chaos, because they don’t enforce any kind of uniformity. The next team name could just be a collection of numbers and the symbols you get when you hold down Shift and Alt at the same time, and it would be in keeping with MLS team name traditions. The Seattle Rainiers is also a bad idea. That’s not even the real name of the mountain. The Salish people originally called it Tahoma or Tacoma. The Seattle Rainiers would look real silly if their city — again, a famously liberal place — decided to restore the original Indigenous name a la Denali, formerly Mount McKinley. That’s a debate raging right now — it’s a very bad time to invest in the name “Rainier.” Plus, do you know who gave Mount Rainier its name? Captain George Vancouver. So unless you want Canucks fans to point out that our city’s namesake named Seattle’s hockey team, thereby making us superior, the NHL’s 32nd franchise should probably pick something else. And if Seattleites are annoyed that a Vancouverite is telling them what they can and cannot do, well, come at me. The rivalry has already begun and you losers don’t even have a name.

It was his hometown team or bust, IIRC.

Gaudette is looking at our Centre depth and rubbing his hands together with a Doctor Evil laugh... Mwahahahaha... Mwahahahaha... The guy seems like a class act, team player king of guy too. I can't wait to see him at the end of the season, because I bet we'll see him like BB last year.
-
That's a relief. The last thing we need is for Vaxjo to push him harder than need be for such a meaningless game. I bet he's just itching to play, tho.
-
It's not necessarily what you said but how you said it with such hyperbole. It seemed like you were saying it to get a rise out of people, hence the troll comments. And FWIW, Pettersson was battling the flu and got stuck on the 2nd line, so andersson did benefit from playing with Dahlin, if you want to go by +/-. EP wasn't the most impactful in the wjc, but I think where many posters are coming from - albeit, it doesn't quite come across this way - is that it was obvious how much more skilled he is and will be moving forward. Who will have better careers? Dahlin and EP almost certainly. Who were the most impactful for Sweden in the tourney? IMO after watching every game: Dahlin, Andersson, Jonsson (watch out for this 3rd line energy guy in the future), EP, Gustavsson, Nylander.

After re-reading the Russian interview with Tree, he's a player who loves to play, and who loves to be loved by fans. He mentioned how the crowd would "oohhh" and "ahhhh" every time he made a hit and how much he liked it. I also feel more now that his decision to go back to Russia had definitely more to do with how WD used him (or didn't) and that the family part was secondary in his decision. Now, I think he could stand to learn a little about how the NHL works, in that he can't just be gifted ice time and instead has to realize that our new coach Green will be there to help him develop the right way through communication--which it sounded like WD didn't do with him--and properly allocated ice time. It also sounds like he keeps in touch with Goldie as well, so hopefully he will see how his buddy is persevering and beginning to earn his trust with Green. Having said this, I say we start a vocal "Tryamkin come back! We love you!" campaign, ha! I bet it would make him think more seriously about coming back over I seriously miss him, though, and am hopeful he does make a return.

The AHL is a league of men also.
-
Personally, I'd like to see him in Utica next year so that he can adjust to the smaller ice. Utica will have an influx of our draftees eligible next year, and I think EP will be good for their development as well - considering that we are hoping to see Gadj, Lind, Dahlen, etc. make the Nucks one day, it would be great for all of them to start building chemistry together and getting used to playing with such a high IQ player in EP, and they can all begin doing that as early as next season.
-
Oh, he's benched all right. Took a penalty in the first and hasn't played since from what the commentators are saying.
-
Honestly, I've been asking myself all tourney if he's even on the team.
-
I kind of feel the same as Higgyfan, and I think it's because I've watched Canada win so many golds in the last 30+ years, but I'm still waiting to watch the nucks hoist the cup. Edit: I wouldn't say that I'm cheering for Sweden, however
-
That would be bitter sweet.

Score more than six goals and create more chances per game, apparently
