Adding to this, let's imagine for a second that Ovie was the one who said all this with some friends. Would the Capitals kick him off the team? I'm guessing no. ................ There is so much hypocrisy with today's callout and cancel culture that it's getting pretty ridiculous. But something to think about... Times are changing and people (mostly men) are updating their moral code and learning better manners, and for good reason. This is not new is society, as manners have slowly been instilled into society over time since the beginning of civilization - albeit very slowly - and they have been studied for a long time now. What Liepsic and his friends did was not OK, and to minimize it is not OK either. However... Our current cultural update has lost its way a little. We need to look at what our end goal is and the best way to get there. If we want people (again, mostly men) to respect others, then what do we do when they don't? What's the punishment? Right now the punishment is your career and reputation with no chance of redemption. You hurt someone, so therefore you must hurt in return. It's retributive justice at work. This retributive punishment creates no room for people to learn, feel remorseful, apologize, grow, and be better as a result. But haven't we as a society been supporting restorative justice for decades now? So now we have cancel culture supporting retribution over restorative justice, all while still supporting restorative in their every day life. So now it seems to be more cherry picking that's based in hurt feelings. Do we want people going around and saying hurtful things? No. But if it does happen, maybe the next course of action is to try and create a safe space that includes both the offender and offended to talk it out, to teach, to learn, and to move forward, rather than putting someone in a figurative prison to rot.

Highly unlikely, but it concerns many others.

All this simply because you made a mistake, eh? Fwiw, your narcissist comment towards me from an earlier post of yours is now coming off as projection, as a clear sign of being strong on the narcissist scale is not being able to admit fault. But, please, keep going. I'll get some more popcorn.

I'm almost always on my phone while on CDC but currently am using my laptop, and now I can see how big those tweets are, ha! Maybe it's a good thing so that all the haters can't miss it?

It's possible that many fans have never worked in a professional role before and simply lack the understanding of professional growth and moving up/on to other positions/organizations. I digress. But I can't agree with you more, there really isn't a tragedy going on here. People act as if Brackett is a scouting god, but he has even publicly said that scouts now scout for the types of players Benning wants, so to think that Brackett can go from misses under Gillis to hits under Benning and no one else can fill his position, if he does leave, is simply clouded by being a Benning basher. Sure, he'll be missed, but he isn't irreplaceable.
-
I think you're right, same as how Cloutier was a Linden guy and Clarke a Benning guy. I also think that Benning wanted a rebuild early on in the beginning and Linden wanted more kicks at the cup with his buddies the Sedins. With Brackett, the term being thrown out lately is that it's a collaboration issue. So, is it Benning that doesn't want to collaborate or Brackett? It seems to me like it's the latter, since Benning merely wants more time to also see the players that Bracket and others identify. But I could be wrong. Maybe we will start hearing from other scouts with our team complaining about Benning being more involved with them?
-
If you're going to throw out statements on the forum then be prepared to receive responses. That's how forums work. You can sit in your couch and predict all you want, but the actual fact of the matter is that no one knows whether we would have made the playoffs with the remaining games; same as no one know how many of Tofu, Tanev, and Marky we'll be able to keep. You can spew all your Benning hate you want, but it's all whiny conjecture.
-
With how many games remaining you claim a fact, eh? Did you see that? That was your credibility going out the window.
-
It appears to me like what changed is that Benning took over and instilled in the scouts what they should actually be looking for in terms of talent. I mean, what else explains how Brackett can go from picks like Schroeder and his other misses to all his hits? Oh, I guess Brackett's own words might explain it.
-
So if all the hearsay is true that Brackett doesn't feel like he has enough control/autonomy with his role, and that Benning and Weisbrod want to be more hands on and have a consistent player evaluation criteria and more time to see the players themselves that scouts like Brackett identify... Who do you agree with if this situation is true: Should Brackett have his control? Or Should Benning have some oversight? If you didn't read the recent article posted by Nucks Misconduct, give it a read. I found this interesting: "One gift that Mike Gillis did leave for Benning was a talented young scout in Judd Brackett. He was hired by Gillis prior to the 2008/09 season. His expertise was south of the Canadian border in the good old USA. But during the five of six Gillis drafts Brackett participated in only five players who played amateur hockey south of the border were drafted by the team. The list is comprised of Jordan Schroeder (2009), Kevin Connauton (2009), Patrick McNally (2010), Joe Labate (2011) and Matthew Beattie (2012). When Benning took over from Gillis prior to the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, he retained Brackett on his scouting staff for decision day. With their 2nd round pick 36th overall they nabbed San Diego born goalie Thatcher Demko out of Boston College. Brackett, a former NCAA goalie during his playing days no doubt played a large part in that decision. In June 2015, the Canucks picked NCAA forwards Brock Boeser and Adam Gaudette. After that draft Benning decided to promote Brackett to Director of Amateur Scouting on August 4th, 2015. Since Brackett’s promotion, the Canucks have selected six more promising NCAA players (Will Lockwood, Jack Rathbone, Quinn Hughes, Tyler Madden, Jack Malone and Aidan McDonough). Quinn Hughes is already the best defenceman in franchise history in most opinions. Non-USA born picks such as Three Crown jewel Elias Pettersson, and pending potential phenoms like Kole Lind, Michael DiPietro, Nils Hoglander, Vasily Podkolzin and others are all picks from Brackett’s watch. So what has changed for Brackett and the Canucks’ scouting department since Benning took over?

You might want to go back and re-read my posts, or just stop.

If you'd like me to confirm, your reading comprehension is, in fact, lacking. There was no ambiguity at all. Aside from that, I'll leave this here for people to see that Benning has had a vision for a long time and expects his team to help create it. Brackett has done a great job doing his part, but to think that only he can look for guys that JB wants to fit our winning culture is naive. And if Benning wants to be more hands on (which likely just means he wants to have scouts identify players and then he sees them for himself more often, then I say heck yeah, because Benning is a better scout than Brackett and most in the league, arguably). If Brackett can't handle a little oversight and teamwork with the GM then see ya later. I hope he does well elsewhere and takes our winning culture with him, because then Benning wil be vindicated even more than he already is; he did once mention that he would be happy for scouts moving on to other teams and moving up because then it says that we're doing something right. Personally, I feel like Brackett made an ill-timed and misguided power move and it's biting him in the butt, and Benning is rightfully so sticking to his guns, which he's also done with players and their contracts as well. We want a cup, and we'll only get that with total buy-in from everyone.

Yeah, that's just it, debt levels have just kept going up since the 08 crash, so Canadians didn't learn their lesson. Now there are so many people and businesses who never save for a rainy day or emergency situation like this and yet they won't have any more credit to bail themselves out. Housing prices haven't moved yet, but they will. The housing market takes a while to start feeling the effects, but it will happen eventually, and it's going to be ugly when it happens, but good for lots of people who have been squeezed out for sooooo many years. My only concern with this, as someone who works hard to save, save, save, and take on debt only when I'm safe to do so, is that governments will start bailing out sectors like the housing market to help people who got themselves into deep shiat when they shouldn't have in the first place. If that happens I'm going to be protesting, ha! Honestly, if we start to bail out irresponsible industry and people that is a recipe for disaster, because, like you said, it's just kicking the can down the road. And guess who will end up paying for all these bailouts one day... not those who collect them. I mean, there's even been talk about bailing out retired people's investments. How is that fair in any way? You choose to invest, you choose to take on the risk. If all of a sudden the risk factor is taken out of investing, whether the stock or housing market, that changes everything and just doesn't seem like a sustainable solution. -
Benning runs this team, the coaching staff, scouting, players, etc. Linden and Cloutier both gone, with Linden not replaced but Clarke brought in to replace Clouts. Benning's move, and a great one at that. This was my point. If his plan doesn't work he's gone. If it does he stays and continued his plan. Last time I checked he's still here and thriving. He could very likely be up for an award this year too. He turned our team from one of the worst prospect pools in the league into one of the best. And this falls on his shoulders, not Brackett or anyone other single person. Benning created the scouting team and instilled his values and character guidelines that he looks for in players into the scouting staff. They look for what he wants and then together pick players, but it's top down. We're also likely going to see some playoff games this year if the season resumes, and, yes, we're trending in the right direction and hitting the goals that he sets out for the team each year, so that is the measure of success. If you don't agree then you're simply moving goal posts to suit your narrative. Take your hyperbole somewhere else, because if that's all you have as a response it's worth nothing. Like I've said, he's created a winning culture and direction with this franchise, and if any single member looks at where we're at and doesn't want to be a part of it and thinks they deserve more or know better then they can see themselves out. Buy-in or bye bye. Benning has earned the right to see out his plan. Never once has it seemed like, aside from his haters thinking so, Benning is a totalitarian regime but rather a team first, character centred-type of guy who values working hard to earn what you deserve. This is the type of team he has created, and you see it throughout the lineup from coaches down to the 4th line. And when guys like Dahlen, Palmu, etc. cry for entitlement, guess what, bye.
-
What isn't arguable is that Benning is the GM who runs the franchise. He hires and fires and sets the culture; he tells scouts what to look for and expects them to do so; and, he will live and die with our success. We are succeeding, and if there is any dissonance then they can leave or expect to be let go ala Linden.
-
This is what I've been highlighting for a while now. JB is the GM, and as soon as he got the green light for his rebuild he put a plan in place and followed through. If people (e.g. Linden, Brackett) ddidnt or don't like it, there's the door I say this because look at the turnaround since JB got the green light. Night and day. Night and day. Night and day. Honesty, all this garbage talk against Benning is coming from people who have disliked him basically since the beginning. Egos involved? Sure, from those who can't admit they were wrong about him. Night and day.

Agreed. If you, or anyone else, haven't listened to this CBC article/podcast yet, it's worth the 20min listen: Too big to fail: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/too-big-to-fail-covid-19-and-canadian-real-estate-1.5555419 I personally don't see anything with the housing market being bailed out because it's "too big to fail" because that would set a major precedent that would defeat the idea of housing as an investment. The worst is yet to come, though, with Canada, specifically Toronto, Vancouver, and Victoria where I live. It takes a while for the HM to show effects, and now that we've seen sales plummet, we'll start to see lots of people defaulting in the coming months. Jobs are lost and coming back very, very slowly, and if/when a second wave of covid happens it'll hit many even harder; but, immigration will be down as well, which is a big driver of the HM. I feel for those who lose their homes and possibly go bankrupt, but at the same time, if anyone ends up in that position then it means they shouldn't have been investing in the HM in the first place. I know people who just bought for their first time and they literally know nothing about mortgages or owning in general (do you know how much blinds cost? They once asked me), and they put down the minimum downpayment and bought at the top of their budget. One of them works in the restaurant industry and just lost his job. I feel for them, but at the same time it's people like this who screw over the economy with poor financial decisions. What happened to the days of saving, saving, saving and knowing that both people have secure careers? I hope this is a wake up call for Canadians and our banking industry like it was in 08 for the US; unfortunately, Canada didn't get the memo back then. Like you, WHippy, we're in a prime (pun intended) position to buy, where we're ready but waiting until things bottom and prices come down, and they will come down, it just depends on how much. There's no rush right now. We'll just let our downpayment and "oh shiat" account grow. -
I think he mentioned his test came back negative.

So you're an independent media outlet, is that it?

Good luck. In the countless number of pages and requests from others for @samurai to offer their (his or hers?) point(s) in a clear and concise sentence or two, or even a paragraph, not a single time has it happened. Not once. Instead a video gets dumped from some obscure "professional" outlier without any explanation on what Samurai agrees or disagrees with. It's a mixture of middle ground and contrarian fallacies.

NHL Draft to remain in June (Proposed)
Jester13 replied to aGENT's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Will the Canucks retain their 1st round pick if the NHL Entry Draft occurs in June? https://flip.it/ylvwS4 So, Daly's proposal could see the Canucks in 17th position, so a lottery, but in 15th with only the possibility to move up to 11th at best? If playoffs happen, tho, we'd be in. With Miller, we'd have 7 days to work out a mutually agreed upon deal, or take the NHL's "suggestion", if we can't work it out. Interesting read and proposals. Thoughts? -
5th, why don't you exercise your democratic right with sending an email to your MP? Get active in the political process because it's not that far of a stretch to think your voice can make a difference. I say run with it.

Apparently the Toronto Maple Leafs ones look great when you first get them but then fall apart in no time.

It seems to me like it's more of a case of some posters being the CDC COVID justice warriors. The CJWs are watching your every post and opinion just waiting to call you out
