Classic. Trying to clarify reminded me of this one:
-
Gee, thanks, because I absolutely love explaining simple things to obtuse posters. But it truly is shame on me. There aren't too many posters on here who are actually looking to have clean honest discussion and instead just want to cj each other in "debates".
-
No one denies they play a role in the crisis, but this thread keeps getting hijacked with conspiracy theories, Trump, and incessant finger pointing towards Trudeau and governments, to the point that each time posters tune into the thread there's a handful of new pages that are filled with all of the above. You can barely even find any provincial or world updates anymore in this thread, but unfortunately we can find lots of armchair politicians and leaders.
-
Maybe a new thread could be made that's strictly for covid-19 government blaming and Trump bashing?
-
KB3 Fairly similar points, Bieksa crushing in PIMs, but aside from stats, he was a tough, mean, heart and soul kind of guy that you want on the backend, and he gave us some very memorable moments that will always stick with fans.

Well, let's try one last time to see if it's pointless or not, and we'll do this by me asking you a question: What do you think I mean by "My point is that Canada is not one to be the first (the leader) to make such huge policy or world decisions or stands, and I said this in response to criticism someone had about Trudeau not shutting everything down back in January."
-
You're taking me completely out of context. I've even clarified for you multiple times what I was referring to be leading, yet you continue to say the same thing over and over. I don't ever feel a need to be right, but I don't take it lightly when someone misrepresents something I've said, especially after clarifying so many times. What you're doing is the epitome of bad faith discussion. I hope others are reading this and can see engaging with you is pointless.
-
Now you're tripling down on your misunderstanding of what I was saying. Yeesh. You know, a little humility when in error goes a long way. You misunderstand and ask for clarification, I clarify, you say, "Oh, ok, I misunderstood. My bad." Not continue to misrepresent the other person over and over.
-
I've repeatedly expressed I know the value in what Canada has done and continues to do. That has not been the point of my original response to the poster who was criticising the government's response to this crisis, and it has never been my point with responding to you. The fact of the matter is you jumped to a conclusion after you erroneously interpreted my post. Enjoy your day, Jimmy, maybe next time refrain from shoulding all over other people without seeking to understand.

Well, yes, you sure did imply that I'm uneducated, due to our school system, in having an opinion on our country. Just so you know, my undergraduate degree is in, guess what, political science, focusing on domestic politics. I'm well aware of political issues in Canada and our historical and current place in the world,as I had lots of focus on gender, race, Indigenous, the environment, and policy in Canadian politics. We do not have a history of taking the lead on big issues, such as gender. If you think Canada was the one to take the lead on gender rights before other countries in the world, do some more research, because we followed others. Granted, Canada does a lot in that area and has been getting better, and I'm not arguing against that, but we did not take the lead; just like we didn't take the lead on shutting down industry and our economy during this pandemic. We followed. This isn't something to get so upset over, it's just something to expect of a smaller country, and it's something to expect from our parliamentary system and social fabric. But this is a larger discussion I'm not quite interested in having and derailing his thread. If you'd like to create a separate thread and discuss it further then I'm happy to add my educated opinions in the matter.
-
Your patriotism is getting in the way of trying to understand what I'm saying, so you resort to an insult? You think I'm uneducated in the matter of our great nation and politics in the world?
-
Sorry, but we did not create peacekeeping. Sure, we've done lots in that area, and Pearson especially, arguably, did the most in pk to put us on the map, but we've had our faults in that area as well and are much less so considered a pk country. And I'm not saying we're not involved or have never been involved in big issues. I think you're missing my general point. My point is that Canada is not one to be the first (the leader) to make such huge policy or world decisions or stands, and I said this in response to criticism someone had about Trudeau not shutting everything down back in January. How about Indigenous rights? No. Gender? No. Climate? No. Sure, we're progressive, and I personally love that about Canada, but were often laggards and not leaders. But don't get me wrong when I say laggards, because we don't tend to be too far behind; but we're not Rudolph with a big red leaf for a nose and instead are often a Potemkin country.

I get that, but if you reverse the trade it's extremely unfair for LA, as they got a really good return for Tofu that I'm sure they're happy about. So the only way to make this the most fair is to stick with the trade and say that it's just a very unfortunate reality of a situation for teams like our Nucks.

I don't mean the NHL renegotiates the deals, I meant the two teams do. But I agree, where is the middle ground? What if two teams can't agree? Lots won't want to give up a good trade. But how would anyone even agree which was a rental deal or anything like that? There's nothing written, is there(?), that defines deals but rather it's all convention, so what team that thinks they got the better deal will want to simply let go of the deal and have it reversed? Do we get madden back? What if we do and then Tofu signs with us in the summer now that he's had a taste for the team and city? The reason why I think it's more likely a trade is a trade is because you can't predict something like this happening, and you can have winners and losers by reversing the trades, as that would be incredibly unfair to a lot of teams. I get that it's incredibly unfair that teams didn't get to experience the fruit of their trades, but it's just an unfortunate reality in that sense of unfair, whereas reversing is a manufactured unfairness.

I was referring to leadership in bigger policy areas, such as climate change or human rights, and not with companies being industry leaders.
-
I agree it will all be addressed (I mean, it'll have to be), but how/where they draw the line will be very interesting, and I don't think the solution will be to just reverse all the transactions. It'll likely have to be on a case-by-case basis and with further negotiation between the two teams. But, I'll admit, I have no effing clue and am merely spit-balling

Well, like I said, it's an unprecedented situation, so it'll take time to iron things out; maybe there just wasn't time to bump so many employees all at one? The 75% may have been announced before the layoffs, but I don't think it's in effect yet? My understanding is that it's still be ironed out and more details will be released soon once approved by government. If eligible, employees can get backpay to March 15th. No?
-
Just a few passengers? I'm not up on the rules, but are employees entitled to severance for a temporary lay off? Collective agreement rights can only go so far, and they don't trump the safety of society, and they also don't trump the rights of the company, who has rights as well (this often gets forgotten in a union environment). With regards to the 75% subsidy, the government is meeting tomorrow, iirc, to discuss it all, so it's still being ironed out. Lamenting about that is a little premature. Regardless, this is why people have to either be on EI or CERB. No one likes it, but this is the situation we're all in. My wife is laid off work for likely the next year with all of this. Because she was laid off on March 16 and not March 15, she was automatically put on CERB, so instead of making the max $573/week on EI, she's making $500/week on CERB. When working she makes $50/hr. Some of her colleagues, who make $15/hr, are automatically on CERB and making the same as her (some are bringing in 100% of their wage, some are making more with CERB than when they were working; she's not). It's not ideal, but everyone is just trying to navigate this unprecedented situation as best as possible. I mean, it has been basically one month, really, since this whole thing started to heat up and take shape. Personally, I think a little slack should be given to our businesses and governments. They're doing the best they can, and they're so far doing a pretty darn good job, all things considered.
-
All very true. And it's also just a byproduct of human nature to be so reactive rather than proactive. I do agree, tho, that things will change drastically after this, as this is an unprecedented event in modern history. I'm not saying we're not great at things, but I don't fully accept that we're leaders in big ways; I'm always open to discussion, so what are some areas that we're global leaders?
-
Unfortunately, Canada will never be leaders in anything. It's not in our nature. We let others act first and then follow. It's ingrained in our polite culture. However, I've said this before to another poster, how it's easy to criticism from an armchair in hindsight, but try to put yourself in their position and honestly think if you would've had the foresight to make all those tough decisions to shut down airlines, professional sports leagues, concerts, every school system, the entire country's dental system, hoard PPE, etc., all before anyone else did.

Why are sailings even running? Shut it down ffs. I hoarded a couple of 25lbs weights from our condo building's gym, and I've been using those and doing tons of yoga and early morning runs to the point that in one month I've lost 5lbs, put on muscle, and now I'm getting back into the best shape I've been in in the last decade. I was working out every morning before work before this, but now that I can do it all way more often at home throughout the day, it's really starting to make a huge difference. Of course, going off the wacky about a month before this all started helps more than anything! #covidsilverlining
