  1. Dmitri Orlov is rumoured to be asking for $8+ million....with what Severson just got he's more than within the realms of reason.  Free agency for defensemen is gonna be a gong show again and it makes me nervous for what Hronek will ask

This is why I laugh at the " market " system in place, it is so screwed up and as these people with money all play this game of a market and values it makes zero sense and outliers are pushed as legit and puts the whole system out of whack lol

  2. I wonder if we'll see any NHL teams opting out of celebrating International Women's Day in the future?

      Mike Vanderhoek

No NHL team has yet to opt out of a celebration themed day as of yet. I would expect you will see this continue.

Highly doubt Garland is bought out or traded. Extremely underrated and under utilized.

  4. From now on, contract years should not be looked at when negotiating a new deal. Contract year = career year. Following years = dog sh*t

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

Contract years can be acknowledged but your insane to base a player valuation on one season either way. This is where this " market " is extremely flawed. This is where the pretend world agents and players live in drive real people nuts.

The Loui Eriksson signing for example, a product of supply and demand and coming off a couple very solid years with a cap rising. He earns an inflated cap number due to these variables and the next players looking for extensions see his number and say " but I have 4 x as many goals as him in a top nine role " boom now some other player earning more than their worth.

Never understood how everyone in this " industry " plays along like they know what they are talking about. Its silly and a mismanagement of millions of dollars by players, agents, team executives across the board.

All that said, no Bo Horvat is not an 8 million dollar player, to be honest hitting 7 million per is him hitting above his class. Truth.

  5. I'm saddened with all the negativity about the team. Don't kick someone when they're down.. extend a hand and lift them. True for all things. I'm confident a celebratory Diwali night crowd will do the right thing!

more disappointment in the fan base and some media in general then anything else. I don't know whatever happened to supporting your team win or lose but it is very rare in this market or not the vocal element of the fan base anyways.

  6. In the past month, I've heard about shortage of lifeguards, home doctors, nurses, airport workers, programmers, dishwashers, security guards. Where did all the workers go?

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

I think honestly a couple years of covid along with all that came with it has maybe set some people's priorities straight.

I know many more people happier to find a balance within life vs working everyday.

But during covid people in the service industry have been bombarded with hate and rude customers who felt it justified to take their frustrations out on workers simply following rules or being the middleman not responsible for price hikes and supply issues.

  7. In the past month, I've heard about shortage of lifeguards, home doctors, nurses, airport workers, programmers, dishwashers, security guards. Where did all the workers go?

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

I can tell you its 110% people giving the middle finger to the system. The level of abuse entry level workers have experienced the past couple of years has skyrocketed. Couple that with companies having to deal with sometimes large portions of staff away due to covid and managers/owners have made their staffing problems the problem of the fewer workers who do show up.

I don't think its as much an incentive issue as much as its people saying no, I am not going to work this job get crap pay and be treated like crap. People see that minimum wage gets them nothing in terms of quality of life, whats the point of working your ass off for un-liveable wages ? No, not an argument of " if you want better pay get better education or experience in a field/trade " thats not the point here.

For example on the Sunshine Coast, the majority of our fast food, service and gas station workers are immigrants from India. Why are they taking these entry level jobs ? (Yes these companies re: Tim Hortons, McDonalds, A&W have immigration programs for workers but nobody else is lining up to work these jobs) because they move in and rent a house with multiple people living in it, so a half dozen poor wages makes it possible to rent, buy food, and have an income. Most are obligated to send money home to their parents and take care of them back in India. But you remove them from the equation and we would have no workers in these fields here.

Now trying to bring in people with degrees and needing doctors, veterinarians, skilled trades people a community like the Sunshine Coast cannot even attract outside help as there is no available housing.

Its honestly people fed up with the cost of living, the wage they can earn and the future being very bleak for people wanting to get ahead.

  8. Reminder:  Ovechkin; at age 36, needs 8 goals in 14 games to tie Gretzky and Bossy for most 50 goal seasons in a career at 9.  Had 2020 not been cut short due to covid; he would be approaching a record setting 10th season with 50 or more goals.

Guy is a beast! pretty cool to see present day players able to touch, reach and surpass all time leaders and records.

I could see at least one more multi goal game this season from Ovie so I bet it will be close.

  9. i'ld like to know what other teams are offering for our players. how far off are we?

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

Canucks don't make that trade if its Schneider, 2nd rd pick and Chytil. You are right that a Canucks based fan forum will over value Canucks assets. In the case of JT Miller, I think you may be surprised to see if a deal goes down that it would be closer to 1st rd pick, Lundqvist or Schneider and a 3rd piece better than Chytil.

  11. BC Housing Assessments are out.  In one calendar year my property value increased $151,500

      Mike Vanderhoek

@Stech there's always a way trust me. Zero financial help from family, wife works from home and I held down 3 jobs all at near entry level wages ( Janitorial, veterinary assistant, graveyards as a merchandiser at a loblaws ). We were approved for a not so great mortgage but worked everywhere I could to bring up that down payment. Bought 6 years back. Still work multiple jobs.......

      Mike Vanderhoek

exactly. I honestly have no idea how anyone starting out can actually buy real estate. I mean so many people are stuck in low paying or just above entry level positions I have no idea how they can even find funds or get approval for more than like a 150k mortgage. Its ass backwards and hopeless for a lot of people.

Yeah i would say it has more than doubled. We bought in 2015 for $ 300k, last year's assessment was around 530k and houses in our neighborhood and similar in age/style were selling for 685k. This year the assessment comes in at 690k, be interesting to see how this is reflected in prices moving forward in my area.

  14. There's quite a significant amount of media people still defending Green. Unreal.

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

I also thought Green was a good coach, I don't think he was right for this team as it moved along and I would stop short of crapping on the guy because he had a poor record, questionable decisions with this group and some other shortcomings not noticed earlier on.

I just find it disappointing how many armchair GM/media types who think he was and is only hot garbage because he lost it here in Vancouver. Nobody is saying he is a great coach, he's still a younger coach who has NHL experience and will more than likely find another job before anyone here wants to admit or give him credit for. There is a reason NHL people speak of him as a decent NHL coach.

Because it didn't work here doesn't mean he should get so much hate, again disappointing.

  15. Word this evening Marc Bergevin is out as a candidate for the vacant GM position in Vancouver, nothing on Laurence Gilman either but a name that's really heating up is Jason Boterill who is the assistant coach down in Seattle, stay tuned

Mellanby may be worth a try if you have to go new but if you could snag Lombardi out of Philly oh man.

  16. Remember when some people here thought Lou Lam was the definition of a good GM?

Threw away picks for LITERALLY nothing. Now look at their record...

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

Lou Lamorello is only one of the greatest General Manager in NHL history, aside from post season successes going deep multiple times he has won 3 Stanley Cups, Gold as U.S General Manager at the Olympics, and two GM of the Year awards. He is essentially a legend in terms of NHL builders and to top it off he had never played in the NHL nor was a part of the game prior to getting into it.

Those " some " people you speak of would be not only NHL wide admiration for the guy but other sports take notice as well due to his methodical running of his clubs like a fine oiled machine.

But yeah those Islanders started out slow so........

  17. I'm preparing myself for Julien as our next coach.

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

I was a Travis Green fan, my first choice as replacement would be Boudreau, I just think he would get the most out of this group and maximize this groups ability to succeed with his style.

Julien I really don't understand the hesitation by many due to the past, it really plays no part in what is going on now. I think he would be a much needed experienced bench boss.

Babcock I can't get a good read on, just something doesn't sit right with me, the fan.

One name that I think is flying under the radar and may have been around when Benning was in Buffalo is Lindy Ruff. The guy has just as much of a winning record, loads of experience and has great passion. He would be someone i'd like to see if not Boudreau or a Julien.

  18. 5 game road trip against beatable teams. Can the boys get it together finally and come home close to .500?

I go into every game as a fan as a 100% winnable contest.

  20. do fans want an improved team or are they more interested in head hunting?

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

you bring up a good point, one I have been watching develop and maybe its just sadly human nature to catch wind of the negative and run with it. But yes, I imagine there are far more then plenty of people who are looking to go to a game or see another loss so they can rip different aspects of the team.

Travis Green is target  number one, the guy who had buy in only two seasons back and his team went on a run in the "bubble". The coach as much as we can question lines and certain player assignments or benchings etc......thats always going to be a variable complaint no matter what coach.

Fire Benning ? why? everyone here thought this team would be much improved a month ago, the same players are here, teams do have bad runs and losing streaks it is allowed haha.

Sell the team ? such garbage coming from ungrateful fans. It is actually quite nice to know a local group owns the club and is passionate about bringing a winner here. What course they take or how involved they are well its their baby they can do as they please.

Short answer, I would say a growing majority are more interested in head hunting, winning squashes that, losing breeds it.

I go into every game as a fan 110% behind my team and the 20 skaters on the ice that night, that doesn't change.

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

Barring any issue with him playing the bulk of the season's games ( knocks on wood ), I really don't see him being anything other than 3rd all time behind Howe and Gretzky by season's end.

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

if it makes you feel better, pretty much everything being offered on is higher than what it is actually worth.

  23. So why are people on Twitter saying 3 X 8 Petey 8 X 8 Quinn?  Did I miss something?  Two or three different people now.  I imagine this is just pure speculation?

    1. Mike Vanderhoek

      Mike Vanderhoek

Hoping just speculation, the annual values if correct are a problem.  Good players yes, but the trend during a flat cap era with the younger players and huge dollar contracts is mind boggling. In the minority I'm sure.

the company contracted by the District of Sechelt to handle garbage can't find workers for very decent paying jobs. So should the District not be going out in their mini dump trucks and 1 ton pick ups collecting garbage, either way the residents are still paying taxes and for services lol.
