[Signing] Capitals re-sign Alex Ovechkin
Mike Vanderhoek replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That puts him around 20th in the League in contract caphit which is more than acceptable. The window is already closed, they will contend sure but the next few years will be fun to see how close he gets or if he can actually surpass Gretzky. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Conor Garland

[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
Mike Vanderhoek replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Gillis took on a contender and kept adding while diminishing the team's youth and futures, he had run his curse as GM, his style lead to him exhausting the resources he had utilized to maintain contendership for the club. He did well yes in the window but not overall. Zero issue with Aquallini being in on decisions, sitting in on negotiations etc its his toy. -
[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
Mike Vanderhoek replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Thing is you're playing hindsight, we can all do that. Holtby, a declining starter signed two years at a decent cap providing the team an exposure requirement and fall back option should Demko of struggled. He has served his purpose in Vancouver and not being taken in expansion left this move as the final option. Loui Eriksson, people all forget the actual UFA crop the year he was signed, the understandably higher caphit required to secure his services when competing with a league full of teams, he was a top nine forward everywhere and had potential to play with the Sedins, the team signed him at market value and the potential was there. Baerstchi, had for a 2nd round pick, a potentially productive winger further developed then using that 2nd rounder was not at all a bad idea, it didn't work out in the end. BUT, you can go around the League and see multiple scenarios here similar in nature, its the business. Maybe just don't take for granted Vancouver has ownership that will sign the cheques and move forward with these " mistakes " because its a League-wide problem not Benning or Vancouver specific. -
[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
Mike Vanderhoek replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Yes, Schenn could fit in very nicely here, he got into 10 games on a Championship sickly deep team in Tampa, no reason he can't provide near regular minutes in Vancouver and if under a million per that is very ideal. -
[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
Mike Vanderhoek replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Which is why if the team can maneuver capwise and retain him its in their best interests. It has been said on multiple occasions by people in the industry most notably Friedman that putting too much stock in making decisions or evaluating players after last season and the bubble before would be something to do with caution. Too many variables with off ice interference this past season ESPECIALLY for players moving to new teams as Schmidt did, essentially a season away from your family or inner circle in a different city where people cannot move freely, multiple services are unavailable, the overall stress of a Pandemic....I feel Schmidt is far more valuable to Vancouver and at this point I expect he will be in Vancouver to start the season as a top four. A return to normalcy could do wonders for many players around the league, Schmidt being one, add in Shaw's hiring and I think Schmidt can excel here, OEL also takes pressure off of him. -
[Report] Canucks G Holtby To Be Bought Out
Mike Vanderhoek replied to babalu's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Holtby was supposed to be selected by Seattle, it was a hunch played and a very good stop gap goaltender under contract for two years in the process who didn't have an amazing year. Given his pedigree, experience and age I was pretty certain he could be moved if needed for a mid to late pick with no retention. Buyout is not the ideal situation but it is a means to an end, the team and all 31 others can find a capable number 2 for cheaper ( which is why Vancouver never received anything of substance for Holtby ). -
[Rumour/Speculation] Luke Schenn returning to Vancouver
Mike Vanderhoek replied to AV.'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Looking through the righties Luke does come to mind and did well during his last stint in Vancouver. Perhaps an under the radar signing and if under 900k per then not bad at all with his experience and on ice ability. A cleaner cheaper risk than some other options. -
Honestly if the team obtains a 3rd in 2023 or maybe a couple 4th rounders for Holtby its a good deal. He was a signing whom cost no assets to obtain and taking on $ 4.3 million is not ideal for any teams then again the Bruins are paying Swayman under a million, so $ 5.2 million for goaltending isnt high.

The team still needs NHL defensemen, they can add bodies and still have space for Juolevi to push to take the next step and get Rathbone established at the NHL level. We also don't know if Schmidt moves or not, could be dealt without a Dman coming back. Smith is tough, plays right side, offers leadership and keeps the opposition honest, he could prove to be a nice stop gap and mentor to help the young guys. He's just not in his twenties anymore so the fanbase will look down on that option.
-
Pretty sure Edler won't be an option and would command well over the League minimum, he will earn a nice contract elsewhere. McCabe would be the type of dman needed, Smith who can play right side would be the more natural fit. Smith is above 30 yrs old say people will scream that he's not 24 haha but he is reliable physical, team first, major leadership qualities.

PROPOSAL: Canucks and Kings
Mike Vanderhoek replied to Mike Vanderhoek's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I have my doubts the Kings would go for it, but I have been researching where they are at and they do want another bigger "name" veteran and while Roy is solid there have been several highly touted drafted defense prospects by the Kings to start eating minutes, Kings could use Schmidt's pedigree while moving off Roy as an unofficial stop gap as he is truly a solid dman. -
PROPOSAL: Canucks and Kings
Mike Vanderhoek replied to Mike Vanderhoek's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Matt Roy is only 26 years old vs Schmidt being 30. Schmidt carries an extra year on his contract. I like Roy's age, cap and his ability. He has been playing top four minutes for the Kings and not a true shutdown defenseman he is defensively responsible. I looked at Josh Manson as well, little older, but Anaheim has some bigger contract dmen in the fold there and Schmidt would crowd that in my opinion. I think He and Doughty being the two go-to guys would be solid in LA. Thanks -
Maybe an under the radar look at a possible deal surrounding Nate Schmidt. I would firstly want to point out I believe the Canucks should if plausible financially retain Nate Schmidt and move forward with him. But as the common theme or suggestion around these boards is the Canucks do need to move more cap and do need to still add to their defense, keeping this in mind and the Canucks without a 2nd or 3rd round pick in 2022 here is my proposal, maybe bland but maybe a way to upgrade a pick as well as bring in a reliable right hand defenseman to play top four minutes: To Los Angeles: D Nate Schmidt $ 5,950,000.00 Vancouver 2022 7th round draft choice To Vancouver: D Matt Roy $ 3,150,000.00 Pittsburgh's 2022 3rd round draft choice The Kings are looking to add a couple solid NHL veterans to their club as they are pushing to transition from rebuild, coupled with a large quantity of up and coming defensemen into the system the Kings will need to upgrade on Roy as he can get passed by some of the young talent, Nate Schmidt provides a top pair/ 2nd pair option for the kings and can provide more offense then Matt Roy can offer in his game. The Canucks make this move as they do clear $ 2.8 million off the books, they upgrade to the 3rd round after dealing a 2nd and 3rd in 2022 away. The team does not gain a pick outright as does need to send one Los Angeles' way as in the end they are taking on a bigger older salary. Not a slam dunk of a deal, Matt Roy is very reliable in his own end, he has good speed and agility while able to play physical as well. He is signed for three seasons at $ 3.15m per and can slide up and down the defense corps, he has been playing top four minutes, is a plus player on a dreadful Kings team and can net some offense although having both Hughes and Ekman-Larsson in the top four, Roy can excel in being the reliable member of either pair. Not a sexy trade by any means, the Kings on face value might now be as eager as Vancouver to proceed but they know they have young guys coming and Matt Roy could end up being pushed out. Thoughts ?

Not sure what is going on but my family has a ranch on Douglas lake road south of Westwold, the White lake rock fire has been burning about 10 days and growing daily. There has been little to no support or noticeable crews. It was reported that a bomber dropped water or retardant but the family having been evacuated now has seen no evidence. House cams show the fire coming over the ridge ( their property ) into the valley unimpeded to the point it is simply across the street from the farm house, hay storage, equipment and other then hoses set up there is nobody to be seen, no water or anything being dropped. The neighbors have an Ostrich farm with around 30+ birds that cannot be evacuated so they are hoping to ride it out. Realizing these situations are playing out allover and the resources available need to triage the situations but its very frustrating and saddening to see a fire growing and moving ever so slowly towards someone's home, livelihood and nothing seems to be happening. Maybe a rant, maybe just sharing, but there are a lot of people now evacuated from Douglas Lake up to highway 97 and the fire is not being fought.

CDC Fantasy League 2020-21 (Apply Within!)
Mike Vanderhoek replied to Nail's topic in Fantasy Hockey
Pittsburgh Penguins 2021 Entry Draft Report The results are in! Other than a few players most of my selections I " jumped the gun " and selected players well before they went in real life, is that a product of being completely out of my element or did I know something the NHL teams didnt lol My final three picks were fun selections I felt I wanted to take a run at, I didn't hold out too much hope that either would get selected and neither did so I suck but here is the run down: # 6 Defense Simon Edvinsson # 33 Forward Prokhor Poltapov # 61 Defense Sean Behrens # 73 Forward Ayrton Martino # 75 Forward Ryder Korczak # 81 Goaltender Benjamin Gaudreau # 85 Forward Brett Harrison # 101 Defense Guillaume Richard # 109 Forward Jackson Blake # 155 Defense Oscar Plandowski # 189 Defense Aleksi Malinen # 195 Forward Justin Janicke # 201 Forward Lucas Forsell # 214 Goaltender Joe Vrbetic 2020 # 93 Forward Oliver Tarnstrom Unselected: Forward Daniil Lazutin Unselected: Defense Lukas Gustafsson Unselected: Goaltender Maxim Motorygin How did everyone else do ? -
Still half a round to go, I wonder if Daniil Lazutin finds a home. I just can't imagine he falls out of the draft from where he was.... and Chicago Steel defenseman Lukas Gustafsson, think he would be a shrewd pick up for someone.

LOVE this pick!
