as a boy growing up during the 2nd world war, i remember hearing the air raid sirens going off in our community in vancouver. we had to black out our windows, in case of air attack. my brother fought in sicily and italy. he was never the same person when he came back.

My dad was born in 1925 was trained as a navigator on a lancaster bomber as a sergeant but the war was ending so he never got a mission which is good because i wouldnt have been born otherwise the chances of returning from missions in lancaster bombers were very low. My dads been dead since 1995 but he would have sacraficed himself back then without a doubt. He tried signing up when he was 17, but they made him wait a yr and he weighed 20 pounds less than they wanted so he ate banana milkshakes and peanut butter sandwiches all summer to gain so theyd let him join.

My dad served in WWII as well. He returned home with something wrong in his back. He couldn’t really ride after. He never spoke of what went on. He died in ‘60. Older siblings say dad was a cheerful guy, but I never saw that. My uncle, dad’s brother, didn’t make it back. Heard about how he was some boxing champ. War is terrible. It’s sad we still kill one another.
