  1. Exactly. Lets just say for arguements sake we had Jett Woo, Toni Utenen and Artyem Manyukan in Utica next few years. Woo doesn't pan out for various reasons and Manyukan shines, gets into the big leagues and is a consistent 20 goal scorer, and Utenen makes it to the Canucks as a top 4 pairing. Is it still right for us to say that Utica doesn't develop players? I think we should all sometimes look at the draft as a whole, because honestly, 2 guys making it in the draft and being contributions to the team should be considered a very good draft class
  2. Exactly, there nothing wrong going through an apprenticeship. There was a story, im trying to remember it correctly but its about Nail Yakupov. As you know the guy came in pretty highly regarded, thrown in the fire by the Oilers just like every high prospect they had, was just in a constantly losing environment with mostly young guys. Im not sure if this is the guy, but it might have been Andrew Ference, but anyways Oilers signed a journeyman player and Yakupov was just googly eyed, following him like a puppy dog since the vet knew how to carry himself like a pro. Its too bad Yakupov's career didn't work out, but pretaining to your analogy, a grad from med school just doesn't go do open heart surgery right off the bat, he watches a veteran do it and gets eased until that grad student can do it on his own. Look at our very our very own Adam Gaudette. Whos the guy he follows around the rink, trying to find out how to stay in the league and have a good career? Its not EP40 and its not Horvat...its Jay Beagle
  3. Not every guy is gonna be a star, or simply put, management just picked the wrong player. There are a lot of guys that least have made the NHL compared to what we were used to during the Gillis era. I mean, even in the guys you mentioned ( I don't think Filatov should count, the guy just flat out gave up and bolted to the KHL) Connolly, Deangelo, Namestikov, Koekkoek are all playing in the NHL up to now. Average, yes, but their careers have also going and played a fair bit of games. Picard and Lindstrom have also been up here, and another 2 guys Cull had a hand in getting to the bigs is Tom Sestito and Derek Dorsett, both had somewhat decent careers, Dorsett playing 500 games is quite and achievement on its own. I think the problem is our expectations. We have Benning at such a high pedestal with his drafting prowess that we want to see all these guys just light it up in the AHL, and jump to the NHL but thats not the case, not every guy is going to pan out. But if we were going to make comparisons, before the Benning era, look at the guys we've gotten to see and be excited for. Schroeder, Grenier, Nick Jentzen, etc, these guys all lit it up in the AHL, none had great careers in even compared to the guys that have made it in your list. Gone are the days when we had guys like Alex Mallett, Matt Beattie, Jordan Subban, and we eat up every single morsel of highlights and project them as roster players and flame out and none of those guys were remotely close into making the NHL. But from what I can compare with Cull, it seems like hes gotten more guys into the NHL, than what was previously done with the previous regime. You don't need a whole bunch of lead singers, you need backup dancers too. The main part is getting to the stage
  4. Its not all about the numbers. Lockwood has pretty good stats yes, but from what Ive seen in the games (i've watched maybe 5 whole Michigan games) its his play that really standout. The guy is an absolute bloodhound, Lockwood will skate relentlessly all over the ice, he's 150% effort every shift. With or without the puck the guy plays full blast. What Motte is right now is a pretty good comparison of what Lockwoods floor will be. He's the kind of player that coaches will find a way a reason to bench, but can't. He's very Alex Burrows-ish pre Sedin with the yapping toned down LOL
  5. I agree. I checked out the amount of games, its not that bad as it turns out. Mceneny ( im not even gonna bother spelling his name right) has 55 games this year with the Comets, most of all the players. Dahlen has 50 games. If he's complaining about his situation or being scratched, he's gonna be in a whole world of trouble in the NHL where as a rookie, being scratched a LOT is normal unless your a superstar. Lind and Gadjovich are in the 30 plus games range, which isn't bad.Thats being sat almost 1 out of 3 games, that shouldn't be unusual for first time proffessionals. All this time I thought they were getting scratched left and right, played maybe 20 games out of a possible 55 but thats not the case. The young guys are just getting eased in, nothing wrong with that
  6. Quinn, yes. Lockwood will probably sign but im not sure he'll play in the bigs but I could be wrong. I think Madden should stay one more year in college
  7. After hearing what Benning had to say about Dahlen wanting out, and with the always reliable Rick Dhaliwal said something in the likes of theres something going on in Utica thats not good, I was beginning to think, maybe theres a reason why Palmu, Dahlen wanted to leave, maybe theres something wrong? I was thinking about this until someone mentioned Trent Cull was the Syracuse Crunch asst. coach. So I checked out hockeydb (im sure most everyone does) and checked out the teams he's been a part of the Crunch. Everyone knows the Lightning franchise is the gold standard when it comes to just churning out prospects, these are the guys I found in their system that Cull had a hand in developing. Drouin, Kucherov, Gourde, Point, Koekek, , these guys are the most notable. Albeit some of those guys had varying amount of games, but with that much star power (ok no so much koekek), Cull must know something about developing players.
  8. The issue is here isn't really the Utica Comets themselves but its the coaching staff. Yes Virtanen, Goldy, Baertchi, Demko, etc all have graduated from the AHL, but predominantly those guys are Travis Green's guys. The real question here is Trent Cull developing them the right way? You can run the same systems here that branches directly to the farm, but Cull and Green are 2 different guys and may have some differences. I didn't think of it much, I just thought that its just an unhappy player wanting out but there might be more to the story. Dhaliwal is a very VERY reliable source, and when he says theres smoke, theres probably fire.
  9. On the contrary, Rick Dhaliwal is actually quite bang on when it comes to news. If Dhaliwal posts something, it holds weight. Its great that Big Mac and Brisebois have made it, but you are making it sound like they're making a massive impact for the team, which they haven't
  10. Also would like to add too that theres also a surplus of wingers we have in the organization. We've added, Leivo and Pearson to go along with Boeser, Goldy, Virtanen and I hope a healthy Sven Baertchi and the kids like Lind, Gadjovich, Jasek and McEwen. I think whats lost too in the shuffle is that Will Lockwood, whos game is quite similar to Dahlen's, is just ending his jr. year in Michigan and has a decent chance of ending the season with the big club. I have no doubt management will find a bunch of wingers via draft or free agent reclamaitions
  11. Yeah it must be tough to for Dahlen to come to this situation. If you think about it, he was playing in one of the highest leagues in Sweden, was the MVP, and I assume he got paid pretty good coin in that league to now doing the the grind in the minors. Its no excuse though, Dahlen had 2 cracks in Canucks camp to show what he can do. The first one I think he was injured then bolted to Sweden, and this past camp, he was pretty invisible. I could understand if he showed something but first reaction I thought was he's absolutely nowhere NEAR ready, at least 1 or 2 seasons in Utica was needed. If doesn't want to pay his dues then let him be. As for Karlsson, Im indifferent, but you know what? Management got us a potential top 10 player in the league, or else we'd be watching Portland Winterhawks games, and got a steal in Gaudette. Right now, I think I'll give Jim and Co. the benefit of the doubt on this one. They clearly targeted Linus so they might know something we don't. Benning sounded very high on Linus Karlsson
  12. He doesn't seem like a guy that wants to go back to Russia, he seems to like the lifestyle here. That being said, rather than qualify Goldy, would much rather give him 2 years, 1.2 per, along those lines just to give him some security. Could be a worthwhile investment with his improving game. 40pts for a little over a mill year is pretty decent value, we've seen worse
  13. Motte's career production is a sliver better than Gaunce, can you really say that you'd do what it takes to get rid of Motte despite not having the stats? Motte's not scoring a whole lot but you'd be hard pressed to replace him with anyone since he's playing every shift like his career depends on it..which it probably does. Sometimes its not all about the numbers, its what they bring to the team
  14. Production isn't a concern, its what he brings. Hes always been defensively reliable and is a big body. Is 5-7 goals a realistic target for him in a full season? Yes I'd like to think so, but he specializes in SOMETHING. Thats my issue with Granlund. Granlund doesn't do anything special but hes below average in everything. He sucks in the PP and doesn't play PK. He's just a warm body with experience that can fill a spot to keep the wheels turning so to speak. Granlund has had his run here already and we've seen all we've need to see from him so I hope if Granny does get traded maybe Gaunce can have a 2nd chance here. 5-7 goals, would already be considered decent for a 4th liner making minimum wage in the bigs
  15. Thats the thing though, you have Granlund and Schaller who offer the same thing and getting paid more. Wouldn't you want to go take the younger cheaper route? Gaunce can play in this league, i have no doubts about that, its just the writing was on the wall when Beagle and Roussell were signed. Granlund and Schaller I see are the only 2 guys he can overtake. Gaunce has VASTLY improved from when the time he first arrived here at camp.
  16. I can't remember Schaller even doing ANYTHING of note this season
  17. Quinn's control of his skating is incredible. My brother got to see him live in the WJC and was absolutely floored at the way he skates. Its like forecheckers trying to catch a bumblebee (not the car!)
  18. Hes got a place in the Okanagan area as well as a bunch of NHLers (predominantly Kelowna), Doan, Iggy, Hartnell, Niedermeyer, just to name a few. Only in hockey is where you can slash, cross check guys at the back, get into fights and becoming drinking buddies in the offseason LOL. Bumped into Hartnell in one of the wineries in Summerland, really good guy
  19. Yeah I know u werent saying that but just pretaining to the other posters as a whole. You bring up good points, I really do think his trajectory almost exactly mirrors that of Sven Baertchi. Exact same problems that came from another organization
  20. I agree, but lets look at his season or his career as a Canuck as a whole though. Has he improved year to year? Yes I'd like to think so. This is Goldy's FIRST, I repeat FIRST, whole season with the big club. Lets give the kid a few more of those before we can judge whether hes going to get it or not. Im not ready throw the towel on him just yet, theres guys above him that should be walking the plank first, namely Sutter, Granlund, less extent Schaller. The first two have had their chances already to make an impact and haven't shown anything. Granlund hasn't shown a whole lot and doesn't have a defined role in this team, and Sutter is clearly trending downwards. Remember, this is the same Goldy that was playing in the top line and EP40 was rackin up points. People can argue that Goldy was riding Petterson coat tails but he also hasn't been putting up the points in a torrid pace like he was earlier in the season. It seems to me, that Leivo's insertion on the top line has benefited more towards Boeser. Either way, lets be patient with Goldy, Baertchi and Virtanen got the same treatment and had the same problems their first few seasons here.
  21. Sutter is a major piece alright, and its a piece that usually ends up in a toilet bowl
  22. Hutton, Pouliot have all had a run with Gudbranson, and all have looked terrible paired with him. Theres a piece in the puzzle that doesn't fit with every other piece on the board. Guddy has been with the same D-corps for the last 3 years and probably every pairing imaginable and hes still awful
  23. The kings scored 3 tonight and the defensemen on the ice were... drumroll! Hutton and Gudbranson Brisbois and Gudbranson Brisbois and Gudbranson Im seeing a common denominator here.
  24. Not after tonight. Gaudette stuck a nail on the coffin of Sutters career as Canuck and kicked him straight into the trading block
  25. Beagle has replaced Sutter in that role, not Gaudette. The point Im getting at is it worth it for a guy that does pretty much close to nothing getting 8-10 minutes a night making 4.5 million, over a developing young player that has upside, and clearly is ready for the NHL. The team is not gonna reallocate minutes for a 4th line centre at the expense of Petterson and Horvat. Believe it or not, we still need to score
