  1. What websites is everyone looking at to find more info on these players? I've been looking at elite prospects but other than a quick blurb it doesn't get into much detail. Hf boards is okay too, but it's generally just fans opinions and not pro scout opinions.
  2. It's not a waste, it's a calculated risk. I think it's so short sighted to just be looking at the size of these players and no further. One thing I wish this team would stop doing is talking about the "Boston model" or the Anaheim model, or what have you. Why don't we create the "Canucks model" like we had in 2011 before the rule book got tossed out the window for the finals. A blend of size skill speed 4 lines rolling beat them on the score board instead of worrying about the scrums after the whistles. The league seems to go In cycles, 5 years ago speed and skill was king, now it's all about size and grit. If we draft the players today according to the particular style that is popular right now, when these kids are ready to step in to the league the model will have changed again and we will still be playing catch up. Now I don't mind drafting Ritchie or Virtanen, but just looking at a players size and instantly writing them off because we play in the west is just so wrong.
  3. Man, all I know is that I'm glad I'm not the one who has to make this pick. Assuming the top 5 are gone, it seems wide open with at least 5 good options to choose from with different playing styles... Personally I'm leaning towards the high ceiling players like Ehlers, kapanen, nylander as I think their skill sets will improve with being surrounded by better players in the NHL. Although it's hard not to like the physical tools that Virtanen and Ritchie have, but IMO their offensive game will take a step back in the NHL with much stiffer competition, especially Ritchie, all his goals seem to come from standing all alone in the high slot and beating goalies with wristers. Two things that aren't as likely to happen in the NHL. But In full disclosure I'm only doing you tube scouting, and that hardly paints a complete picture of a player. Anyways they are all good players, I just think we need some pure offensive talent to help balance out our prospect pool.
  4. Still shows what a big bodied kid can do in junior doesn't always translate to the bigs though. I think I saw somewhere that Ritchie is a 95 and almost a year older than most other kids in this draft.
  5. 1st line HOF hey? Lol, in surprised he isn't projected 1st overall then. Obviously the 6th and Higgins won't do it, but something like Hansen the 6th and a 3rd would. It's only 1 spot...
  6. Dude, read what I wrote. I get that Ritchie and Virtanen are good picks.... I understand that right now those are desirable players and would be good additions to the team. But it's not ridiculous to look at the high skill guys as well as viable options. I'm so sick of hearing about the Boston model. How about we create the Canucks model? A blend of high skill and bigger grittier players that can compliment each other.
  7. I'd be fine with either Ritchie or Ehlers, two completely different types of players and I see the merits of both. I just find it funny that people see that Ehlers is 1" under 6' and 165 lbs as an 18 year and instantly say he will never make it. Look at the way this kid plays, he will make it for sure, and in 3 years when he makes Anaheims roster and is blowing past our defenders like they're pylons some people will feel pretty dumb for discounting him so soon.
  8. Yea it's a tough call for NYI to give up top 5 this year to keep next years pick. It's basically telling your fan base that you expect to suck again next year. Unless the 2015 is so much better and kids in the 15th spot are better than the top 5 this year.
  9. Would you take Ritchie over draisaitl or MDC? And yes, trade the 6th and Higgins or Hansen for the 5th, make more room on the roster for youth and get a potential 1C or top line PWF. Ritchie is a good player no doubt, but his ceiling is 2nd liner at best IMO. That wrist shot won't beat NHL goalies like it does junior goalies, nor will he find himself all alone in the slot as much in the NHL.
  10. Wow, pretty definitive and bold statement right there.... Maybe that's why I find myself discounting your opinions.
  11. If NYI gives buffalo their pick this year, I wonder what it would take to trade spots with buffalo? Or even just get their 5th pick? If we moved up a spot we would probably have our choice of Bennett, MDC, possibly Draisaitl if Edm doesn't take him. It would definitely be worth it IMO to have a chance at one of those guys, all clearly on another level than the 6-10 group.
  12. I don't think his one off hand remark about a Boston model makes everything so black and white. He also talked about team balance being very important. I do expect him to take a guy like Ritchie though over someone like nylander... But I don't think it's as set in stone as you believe.
  13. I really liked Virtanen earlier in the year when we were around 8-12... But lately I've been seduced by the pure offensive skills of Ehlers and nylander etc. Ehlers especially, he doesn't just use his speed to drive wide on the rush, he seems very good at passing the puck of and darting into open ice for good chances. Nylander reminds of karlsson with the way he skates and the balance and agility he has though. Either way we are looking at a very good young player coming into the prospect pool. Hopefully more than one of the scouting staff does their job in the later rounds.
  14. Agreed, They are safe in the fact they will play in the NHL. But very risky if you expect these guys to be scorers at the NHL level.
  15. I agree they are much safer picks, because with their size and skating they will at least turn into 4th line grinders Or 3rd line checkers.
  16. 5 11" is ridiculously undersized? Really? I understand he's light at only 165ish, but he only just turned 18. Guaranteed he puts on 15 lbs at least in the next couple years, and then he's 5 11 maybe 6' if he grows an inch, 180lbs, incredibly skilled with 10/10 skating.... I think he's worth the risk. I think a guy like Ritchie is way more likely to be an NHL forward, but his ceiling is 3rd or 2nd line winger... We have enough of those guys, we need a true first line player.
  17. I guess that makes sense if you assume shinkaruk is a slam dunk to pan out. I think Ehlers probably has a better chance to make it than shink at this point, and if they ended up both working out, and being redundant as you put it, than we have a great trade piece in the future. Also saying a guy is too skinny for the NHL when he is 17 seems short sighted.
  18. I'm a little worried that Ritchies offensive game won't translate the the NHL. He could turn out to be one of those 3rd or 4th liners that used to score in junior. See Tom Sestito. Or he could be Lucic 2.0, I guess you never really know....
  19. Looking at the NHL.com standings, it looks like Carolina holds the tie breaker over us. So if they win we are guaranteed 6th overall! That's great, I'd much rather cheer for the team to win tonight with no strings.
  20. If we take him at #6 I would be very happy, definitely a little riskier than some other picks, but the reward is much higher as well. I think we've missed that kind of high flying high skill prospect on this team for a very long time. Although that's only as long as guys like dal colle, Bennett, draisaitl are gone by then.
  21. Wow, the more I look at Ehlers the more I like. If he is somehow available at 8 or so we should definitely pick him up. Speed and skill like that does not just grow on trees!
  22. Nicholson as president Gilman as GM Linden as asst. GM or senior advisor/ pres of hockey ops etc. I could see that.
  23. I think if Bo is going to make the team next year it will have to be somewhere on the 3rd, and maybe he can work up from there. I think that will be fine for his development, 3rd line minutes in the NHL is far better than another season of junior.
