I hope... Picking up his bags and heading for the airport.
-
He surprised me a bit tonight, didn't expect him to be driving into the offensive zone like he did, I though he was a more aggressive player tonight then during pre season.
-
I've reads nothing that says he played POORLY in the "A" just that he didn't score, which isn't really what I expect from him anyway. I expect a very conservative game from him tonight, the best thing he can do is play his usually quality "D" facilitate a few transitions through the neutral zone, and win FO's. If he manages to be effective in those areas, I would consider it a great start.
-
Yeah, that is about my level of expectation.
-
I would hope that Trev/Benn/WD have already made it clear to him what the plan is, I expect he goes back to junior after 9, barring a miracle, and would expect he's been told that. I don't think they'll be "Grigo'ing" anyone. After 9 in the big's he'll have a better grasp on what he needs to be effective at this level.
-
I don't think he is faster than Sestito, I think he is actually slower.
-
I agree, and I think F.O % would be his ticket. But realistically, I don't believe he's making this team past 9 games unless he pulls off a miracle and they are ready to unload Matthias.
-
Actually, based on skill sets alone that top line looks pretty damn good on paper. Each player brings something unique and valuable that in theory would compliment the other two. Also that line can skate. Gaunce and Horvat together? No, too slow.

Burr sets the intensity standard for the new guys to follow, I think he's our most aggressive in your face type player now, and in his mid 30's he's still as intense as he was at 28. He's a gem, no complaints about him at all from me.

I take Kadri, probably for deal involving Bonino however, not that Bonino isn't god, but Kadri plays with attitude. We could use a guy like that.

Totally agree, Burrows will find a way to earn his salary this year, Burrows fought his way from the bottom of the hockey food chain all the way to the top, he knows more about dealing with adversity then any one else on the team I can think of. Also, having seen Bonino play quite a bit I can tell you that a Burrows/Bonino combination could be really effective, I'm looking for those two players to help each other out this year.

It's the power forward thing, There's a long history of guys who were bigger and stronger then their competition, tearing it up in junior, and flopping in the NHL when they no longer have that advantage. Also lack of assists and not being deployed in all situations is a red flag for some scouts.

Thank you! Very interesting, Hard to tell what kind of player he'll be. I certainly hope he leans in the "drive the puck through the neutral zone" direction. Whether he makes a great play when he gets there or not is of secondary importance to me at this point, Anyone who can win puck battles and move the puck through the zones is worth their weight in gold. And he certainly has the physical tools to do it.

Asked this question in a Bure thread, but thought I might get some good answers here. After watching Bure nostalgia vids and noticing how good his transition game was (Winning puck possession in the defensive zone and moving the puck through the neutral and into the offensive zone) and realizing that Kesler used to do the same thing for us, I found myself wondering if that's part of Virtanen's game? Does he just wait around the blue line for passes? Let someone else move the puck through the neutral zone, then wait around and try to get in position to finish the play? Or does he use his speed and size to to regain the puck and drive into the zone himself? This is for anyone who has watched a lot of his junior play, What is his game like in this respect?

"the true strength of a teams' offense is carried up the middle" "If a team possesses enough strength in the middle, then a 'franchise' defenseman can play a very high amount of minutes fairly easily, as puck control is high, the odds of being stapled on the end boards are low" "Goaltending is Overrated" I find myself agreeing with you AGAIN. It's always been my position that teams should build from center ice out, and that a center who can score and defend is probably the most valuable player in the league, he becomes a 3rd D-man in the defensive zone and takes the heat off your existing D. This is why teams not on his list were STILL trying to acquire Kesler. I remember hearing Nonis' "Build from the net out" philosophy, and shaking my head.

Hmmmm, Interesting, We all have our opinion on certain prospects, but I always appreciate hearing from someone who has actually watched them play more than once. I think the Canucks have Gaunce penciled in as a bottom 6 forward in the future, as long as he can get his skating together, With the current NHL size fetish, I think he has an excellent chance to play bottom 6 minuets this year, if he can keep up with the play. I don't think the Canucks are as concerned with developing him properly as they only see him as bottom 6 grit and an entry level deal.

Wayne Gretzky? Horrible Skater, Luc Robitaille? First time I saw him play, my first thought was "I can skate better than that" Ray Sheppard? I don't even know if he COULD skate, but he could score 50 goals, Speed will keep you in the NHL, and get you that 3-4 line job, if you happened to be faster than the next guy, But Skill trumps all, ability to see how the play is developing and where you or your teammates need to be and what you need to do when you get there is what separates the main-eventers from the Jabroni's in this league. Were that not the case, and speed/size is all that mattered, Sestito and Mike Brown would be perennial all-stars. Unfortunately for then, they can bull their way to a certain part of the ice or get there faster then the next guy, but by the time that happens someone with "Hockey I.Q" has has already taken the play elsewhere.

Define "Elite"

And if this Hockey thing doesn't work out he'll have all the skills needed to work with the mentally handy capped. Good idea to have a plan "B" Jake,

[Trade] Gagner for Purcell
terrible.dee replied to canuckbeliever's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Gagner is going to prove the problem wasn't him, he was just a convenient scapegoat. But Now they have Yak for that. Gagner is a really good 2nd line center, and now he has a chance to prove it. Would have sent to Oiler's Bonino in a second for him. -
I totally agree with you but at this point it's pretty clear what Tre/Benning's marching orders are, Interestingly, they are the same marching orders the Flames ownership ruined their team with: "I don't care what you say, I want to make the playoffs and retain my season ticket base, MAKE IT HAPPEN!" Since the Flames abandoned that stance they have become a team on the rise, Oh well, what goes around comes around.

Are you comfortable with Lack & Markstrom?
terrible.dee replied to Canuckler87's topic in Canucks Talk
If that's true, then I'm totally ok with being "Goddamn cheap" I think he is worth a decent return though, maybe one good but not great piece. Tough to put a price on Myers, he was one thing....then he was something else....very subjective value. -

No player loses on purpose, especially not so his current team can draft higher, It depreciates his value in the marketplace and brings someone else in to potentially takes his job. The desire to tank is from fans only, -

When did everyone get so Goddamn cheap! You used to trade value for value... Now, unless you're totally burning the other team......no deal,
