  1. Edler - Brodie would be a great pairing -- much better than Edler - Tanev as Tanev can't seem to stay healthy. Assuming we trade Tanev for futures and if Tryamkin doesn't come over next season as rumoured, Brodie would be a good fit as a Top-4 RD option until Woo develops into that role. Edler - Brodie Hughes - Myers Benn - Stecher Then next season assuming no Tryamkin... Edler - Brodie (re-signed) Hughes - Myers Juolevi - Stecher The year after that... Hughes - Myers Juolevi - Brodie ______ - Woo Stecher
  2. TJ Brodie? Trade futures to Calgary for Brodie (Calgary needs cap relief). Then trade Tanev, Baertschi to recoup said futures.
  3. You guys bring up a very good point. Our forwards are pretty good, in my opinion, with recent Hobey Baker winner Adam Gaudette, the 2019 10th overall pick Vasili Podkolzin, Nils Hoglander, who some thought he would be going in the latter half of the first round, and Tyler Madden, who outscored 2018 first round picks Oliver Wahlstrom and Jay O'Brien in their rookie NCAA seasons. Gaudette, Podkolzin, Hoglander, and Madden all have the potential to be Top-6 forwards, with Podkolzin potentially having superstar status if he really does reach his ceiling. I would argue that our goaltending pipeline is our real strength. We have Demko in the backup spot right now and both DiPietro and Kielly turning pro. Either Demko or DiPietro could be elite goaltenders. People sleep on Kielly, who had exceptional numbers in the NCAA. In his sophomore year Kielly averaged 1.82 GAA with a 0.929 SVS%, and in his junior year he averaged a 1.91 GAA with a 0.929 SVS%, both over 39 game seasons. Our real weakness is on the blueline. Juolevi and Woo could be Top-4 defensemen but who knows. Tryamkin looked good in his time with us and could be a Top-4 defenseman but it is not guaranteed that he would even sign another NHL contract. More work definitely needs to be done filling that cupboard, and although most people think draft it can also be done via trade or free agency as well. Looking at NCAA and European free agents is an interesting option and one that Benning has exercised already. Hopefully with the "Pettersson Factor" we'll be able to attract more highly sought-after NCAA and European free agent defensemen.
  4. RIP Raptors. At least they won a championship.

I'm glad they won but I'm also glad he's leaving bc &^@# Toronto

Honestly I can see Demar Derozan returning in a couple of years once his contract expires.

The Raptors are lucky they won that championship otherwise it would have been one of dumbest moves in sports history.. but I can see them being a crappy team for awhile now.

      They need another superstar.

@drummer4now -- One of the dumbest move in sports history?!? Yikes. I wouldn't have called it *THAT* (there's a lot of more dumb moves) but it was definitely a risk that paid off.

Demar may come back. Hard to say. But at the end of his deal, will he be needed?

Also, I don't think you realize how bad the East actually is in the NBA. The Raptors will still be a playoff team but it'll be tough for them to get out of the 2nd round. They have some very good young players in Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, and OG Anunoby... they also have one of the best G-League programs that has churned out NBA players and is responsible for the massive leaps Siakam and VanVleet, in particular, made.

I have faith in this team and the Raptors do have one of the Top 3 NBA executives in Masai Ujiri manning the ship so it won't be as catastrophic as you think... They won't be able to repeat but at least they're not set up to die like the Cavs did when Lebron dumped them both times.

  5. I would do Gaudette + Tanev w/ max salary retention for Fabbro in a heartbeat. That would complete our Top-4 defense group for the foreseeable future with Hughes, Fabbro, Juolevi, and Woo.
  6. Ray Ferraro brought up a good point: We improved our defense but where will our scoring come from? Pierre McGuire added that our PP has to be better and noted our new additions. McGuire went further, saying that if we have a Top-15 PP, we will be in the playoff hunt. Agree or disagree?

we’ve had trouble generating secondary scoring for quite awhile. hopefully, they find a scoring winger for bo and pearson. truth is we  don’t have much scoring from our 3rd and 4th line. we should get more from our defense, but if we don’t, we’ll falter again.

teams know if they stop our top line, we struggle mightily. weaned output from baertschi, leivo, virtanen and roussel. gusev might help if he is picked up.

    3. Solinar

      Solinar

Miller Pettersson Boesser  not hard to imagine 30 goals from each, 30 assists

Pearson Horvat Eriksson  25 goals, 25 assist from this group, tho I'm high balling Eriksson on last years production when this line was put together

Sutter Beagle Virtanen  We should be able to expect 15-20 goals from each person on this line.

Roussel Gaudette Leivo  Should be able to rely on these guys to be in the 8-15 range for goals

Then for the defense, if we can manage at least 10 goals apiece, that is another 60....

Might need Markstrom to go for the long bomb a couple of times, but the goal output isn't unreasonable, and anything extra is just icing....exciting icing.

Oh, and I forgot about Baertschi and Goldobin in this mix....I didn't forget about Schaller tho...but that's because I don't see him here except for injury call up.

  7. "Seems like a gross overpayment" I can't even imagine the phrase he would use if Myers signed a 7x7 deal!!
  8. I was hoping it would be front-loaded so that we could look at moving him in the final year if needed. That said, a 5 year deal for a 29 year old defenseman who is a good skater and can keep up with today's play should be ok to effectively play out the full term. I'm sure glad this wasn't a 6 or 7 year deal though. *Phew*
  9. Great signing. I think Myers has more to show. It will be great seeing him play alongside Hughes -- they will be very complementary of each other, much like Edler playing alongside Stecher, where both players bring out the best of the other. I can see a top four group of Edler - Stecher and Hughes - Myers, where both pairings have that puck-moving ability and can push the pace and generate and support the offense. Benn and Tanev can take up the defensive zone starts and PK time.
  10. $2M x 2 years is a great signing. That said, Hutton did show that he can play over 20 minutes/night for short stretches when Edler was injured. Not sure how those minutes will be covered when Edler is out for 10-15 games. I assume those would be split 20/20/20 with Hughes/Benn/Juolevi, or maybe those minutes are eaten up by Myers/Tanev/Stecher. Great signing nonetheless; Hutton is too costly. Great guy tho.
  11. I agree. By default it should be Baertschi in that spot (as long as he is healthy), but I hope management would give both Goldobin and Virtanen a long look there too.
  12. Hutton for Vatanen, sign Myers, re-sign Schenn, then trade Tanev for a pick (retain salary if necessary), and have Juolevi as the #6D. Edler - Stecher Hughes - Myers Juolevi - Vatanen Schenn
  13. With the acquisition of Miller and the drafting of Podkolzin, and with Pettersson and Horvat also being consistent high-effort, puck-hounding 200-ft players, I am genuinely curious how this will affect Virtanen's game. Everyone is expecting Miller to play alongside Pettersson and Boeser, which would mean we in a few short years we would have a second line of Podkolzin, Horvat, and Virtanen. Will Virtanen finally get it by then, and if he does, what could his game look like playing alongside Podkolzin and Horvat?
  14. We've been needing a JT Miller-type of player but who needs JT Miller when we can take the draft pick that could potentially turn into a JT Miller-type of player?
  15. Podkolzin? Madden? Woo? Hoglander? They're all ~2 years away and they'll be on ELCs for 2-3 years from then...
  16. Agreed. Miller is a legitimate Top-6 player, 26 years old, and who is signed for a reasonable cap hit for another 4 years. Teams pay a 1st round pick and then some for a Top-6 forward as a pure rental at the deadline. We have Miller for another 4 years.
  17. Adding Pearson at the TDL and now Miller at the draft are great additions to the Top 6. Now it's not just Petey, Bo, and Boes. Hopefully Goldobin gets a chance on the wing.
  18. Great pick. Absolute steal getting Podkolzin at 10. He was consistently ranked as a top-5 talent throughout the year until the two more years in Russia comments and lack of point production at the U18s. Even at that tournament, however, you could see how special of a player he is in the way he played. Cam Robinson's take on DobberProspects.com provides a very accurate description on the way Podkolzin plays the game: When it comes to Podkolzin's skillset, Robinson says this: Of note, Robinson had Podkolzin as the 8th best player in his final rankings. Steve Kournianos of TheDraftAnalyst.com is more bullish on Podkolzin and had him ranked as the 5th best player in his final rankings. Kournianos has a glowing review of Podkolzin that highlights his 200-ft game, high-end talent, willingness to play an abrasive style, understanding of the game, and his compete level: If you look past his nationality, Podkolzin is a Benning and Co. player through and through. One thing I've noticed this past week is that when other coaches talk about the Canucks, specifically Peter DeBoer and Bruce Cassidy, they talk about the way they play the game. Podkolzin fits that philosophy to a T, and he's exactly what the Canucks needed. 19. Tanev for Barrie and swap 2nd round picks. Colorado moves up to the 40th overall selection and Vancouver moves down to the 47th overall selection. Personally, I feel the 10 to 16 swap is quite a bit of value...
  20. I'm surprised it wasn't closer to $7M on a short-term contract. Eddie deserves more and totally could have gotten that and term in the open market. He took a big hometown discount to stay with us.
  21. If a defenseman, either Broberg or Seider (unless of course we happen to get Byram). I don't think either are "mean" as you put it, but they both have the size, strength, and skating ability to box people out, have strong board play, and clear the crease.
  22. Congrats to Michael Del Zotto for winning the Stanley Cup!

    1. steve french

      steve french

I didn't even realize he was with the blues. Just barely made 41 games or over too, so he will get his name on the cup, right?

  23. Hutton for Johnson straight up, or add a later round pick from VAN if anything. Better than overpaying in both money and term for Myers in free agency, when we have Woo coming up in a few years and Tryamkin stashed in the KHL. Johnson would be great alongside Hughes. Johnson would provide good mentorship, is a big body, and looks like he will be able to play in that #3D role for the remainder of his contract. Hutton would do well playing on the second pair with Makar. Hutton is young enough to grow with their core and has the skillset and experience to stay in that #4D role for them. We would be short a bottom pairing LHD which may need to be looked at in free agency or another trade, unless management expects Juolevi to come into camp and take that spot. At that point though, you'd have to pray to the Hockey Gods that Edler doesn't go down with injury, otherwise you'll have two rookies in Hughes and Juolevi as your top two LHD...
