  1. Hoping he stays in college for another year. One more year in the NCAA won't hurt his development. If anything, he's already going to a top-notch program at Michigan where he can get quality coaching and ample time in the gym to get stronger. The NHL schedule is a grind, and players often end up losing weight over the course of the season despite being on strict nutrition and training programs. Size might not be a matter at the start of the season, but by the 1/2 or 3/4 mark the grind of the schedule may affect him. Besides, Pettersson and Gaudette and Boeser should all be enough to draw in fans.
  2. IF Hughes were to sign a pro contract, I could definitely see management hanging onto Chris Tanev for the foreseeable future. Tanev has that stabilizing presence for his d-partner and hopefully a hungry and determined Hutton would fare well playing alongside him. Juolevi to Utica; Del Zotto and Pouliot in the press box. Edler - Stecher Hutton - Tanev Hughes - Gudbranson
  3. He isn't Canucks property, but how was UND defenseman Colton Poolman? Did he play well? Or look close to being an NHLer. He may be one of the most sought-after NCAA free agents next spring and it would be interesting if the Canucks have the inside track and sign him.
  4. Tanev and Gudbranson are good players, the former being better than the latter. That's said, Tanev is always involved in trade rumours and Gudbranson hasn't lived up to expectations since coming over. I wonder how much both of them factor into management's long-term plans. Maybe we trade Tanev sooner rather than later. Maybe Gudbranson stays for just the duration of his 3 year contract. No doubt, they are good pieces now that can help the team, but long-term we'll need another potential RHD prospect. Tryamkin, on the other hand, is a huge wildcard. If he does indeed return in a year or two he'll have the opportunity to step right into a top-4 role alongside Hughes or Juolevi. I hope he returns, but hope is not a strategy.
  5. Rathbone sure seems like a player. Possible late round steal, but IIRC had he chosen a different pathway instead of High School Hockey --> NCAA he would've been picked in the early rounds of the draft. He definitely has the talent for a top 100 draft pick. A possible left side of Hughes/Juolevi/Rathbone would solve all our puck-moving and offensive woes from the blueline. Hopefully Benning and Co and get complementary right-handed defensemen to play alongside them. Stecher is one (and already played bottom-4 minutes in the NHL), Woo looks like he could be a player as well.
  6. Looks like he's a keeper and could make it in the NHL one day. Left side defense getting particularly crowded, but it's great to see some organizational depth. (Edler) (Del Zotto) Hughes Juolevi Hutton Pouliot Brisebois Rathbone Utunen
  7. Edler - Stecher Juolevi - Tanev Hughes - Gudbranason Del Zotto, Hutton, Pouliot, Biega etc. as extras
  8. Would rather keep Juolevi. Maybe work something around Gaudette + Tanev if possible. Might not get a top-pairing RHD but a top-4 or #2/#3 RHD would be good.
  9. I was thinking the exact same thing earlier when we made the pick. Hughes takes the pressure off of Juolevi, and Juolevi takes the pressure off of Hughes. Juolevi no longer has the pressure to be the top PP QB and put up 40+ points per season, and similarly, Hughes doesn't have the pressure to be the guy who goes up against the toughest competition. Hughes and Juolevi would likely be put into positions where they can succeed and play to their strengths -- Hughes with more offensive situations and Juolevi with more defensive situations. I have no doubt that both of them could handle top-pairing minutes quite easily and would be our 1-2 punch on the backend.
  10. I thought that comment was very interesting. By all media accounts we thought Benning was in love with Dobson or Bouchard. We knew Tkachuk was up there as well. Maybe the Canucks' draft board was: Dahlin Svechnikov Tkachuk Hughes Zadina Kotkaniemi/Dobson/Bouchard/etc.
  11. Tryamkin-Dobson

  12. Or Noah Hanifin. Just saying.
  13. Thanks for the update! +1 and give yourself a pat on the back, good sir! Hopefully Tryamkin learned as much as he could playing on the international stage. Especially from Pavel Datsyuk. The ins and outs of being a pro and everyday preparation.
  14. So uhh.... my question might be a bit off topic but..... uhhh..... how did Tryamkin do playing in the World Championships?
  15. Don't want to derail the Brisebois thread further, but a Rathbone - Dobson pairing would be very very fun to watch.
  16. @1:51 -- How does he even see that pass opening up?? Juolevi looks pretty good quarterbacking the powerplay. He gets his wrist shot through traffic from the point and can find the open man quite well.
  17. I don't know now if they can fit him in though... CapFriendly has the Jets with an estimated $20.6M in cap space this offseason but need to re-sign Hellebuyck, Trouba, Morrissey, Enstrom, and to a lesser extent Lowry and Armia. I guess they can replace Lowry and Armia with cheaper depth players but if they were to re-sign Stastny he would have to come at a massive discount.
  18. I want Benning to overpay for Paul Stastny on a short-term deal. He is 32 years old and just coming off a 4 year $28M contract and had 52 points this season. A two year $14M deal ($7M per season) would be perfect if he wanted to come and play alongside a Boeser, Pettersson, or Gaudette. Plus, he's great at face-offs and in year 2 we could retain 50% salary and trade him for assets (this past deadline, Stastny was traded for a 1st, 3rd and a forward prospect).
  19. I was just listening to Sportsnet 650; They were saying that this opportunity could be Hockey Canada "grooming" Michael DiPietro to be the starting goalie at next year's U20 WJC. Carter Hart is turning professional this offseason so this would give DiPietro valuable experience and training to further develop his game to be THE GUY for Hockey Canada. It's an interesting thought, as the radio guys were also saying that the rest of the world has caught up with Hockey Canada and everything is so competitive. Anything to get the competitive edge. That said, it's a big testament to DiPietro's abilities in net and the faith Hockey Canada has in him.
  20. I agree with all of you guys. I thought his skating was a real strength of his. I clearly remember reading interviews from OHL coaches saying that Olli Juolevi is so hard to gameplan against because of his ability to escape the forecheck with his skating or his quick passing. I was excited to see him at training camp this year but thought that he didn't look as quick as advertised. I thought it was the difference between OHL speed and NHL speed. That said, it is a very real thing when you bulk up by adding 20 lbs over the summer. As DeNiro says, look at Jake Virtanen. He was one of the fastest players in the WHL and in his first year in the NHL here his speed was electrifying. The following summer he packed on 20 lbs and look what happened... his pace slowed down, he was taking short shifts, and probably due to him tiring out too quickly he would make "low IQ" plays. This year he's looked much much better and much faster. I think that the added weight gain for Juolevi slowed down his quickness. Cutting down on fat, getting stronger, and improving his explosiveness will be big goals for him this offseason. Maybe it will help him to get quicker on his feet and maybe with improved endurance/less fatigue and players in the right position he'll be able to make quicker decisions. That's my two cents anyways.
  21. Sounds like he is very much open to the possibility that he can come back to the NHL. He definitely respects his contractual obligations, which is probably a good thing considering our team is still stocking up on young assets and developing. As others have said, by the time his contract is over in 2 years he could be back playing alongside a more mature and established Horvat, Boeser, Pettersson, Goldobin, Virtanen, Juolevi, Gudbranson, and Demko. Tryamkin could conceivably sign and have the opportunity to immediately step into a top-4 role for us. I think things would be very interesting if we land one of the top two picks (Dahlin and Svechnikov), or even acquire a mid-or late-1st round pick and draft a Russian. Would that entice Tryamkin even more?
  22. Oh god I dunno who to believe... I just found a stream online so hopefully I can watch a bit of third period before I go to work. And yes @Rob_Zepp it was me who asked about Heiskanen. Last year leading up to the entry draft I thought Heiskanen would be available at our pick and that his potential is sky high. I really wanted him but his U18 performance skyrocketed him up all the way to to the third pick. I've been stat-watching him throughout the season and from his play against men and media reports he looks like a sure-fire stud and at least a top-pairing defenseman at the NHL level.
  23. Heiskanen playing in this game for HIFK?
