It's just a kick in the nuts to the fan base I think...I've dumped thousands into merch in the last couple years after watching mostly disinterested for about 20 or so years. I think this is going to be a brutal year as I don't think every pitcher is capable of pitching out of their minds again and staying healthy. The bullpen is awful. and now the organization doesn't want the faces of the franchise there. They have maxed profits and as we all know, in the al East you might only compete once every 20-30 years if you don't have a 200+ million payroll. The worst part about it that gets my goat is that the fanbase is fooled by the bs...if you want to slowly reduce this team to moneyball...just be honest about it. Don't try to convince me through 1 sportsnet article after the next... that these chicken $&!# moves somehow make the team better. Don't write an article saying that Boston added Sale and Moreland to try to be competitive with us(especially when Boston won the division last year and we snuck into the wildcard game on game #162) Rogers with their PR machine:Sportsnet. they sure have a lot of the masses fooled when there should be lynch mobs. If I lived in To I'd go to games just to boo Pearce every chance I got to try and show management that fans aren't happy at replacing EE with him. I mean my sentiments will change if Pearce puts up 100+ rbi and 40 HR this year... -

Yes and if you think about the last half of the season EE was on 1st and Bats was DH. W/ Zeke or Saunders playing the field for the most part. So i see Pearce as being a replacement for EE. And Morales being a replacement for Bautista. Then we got that oberholtzer was a replacement for Cecil but has a 8.55era in his last stint in the AL so they cover this up by saying he was signed for depth. -

Lol was just reading the Globe and mail's article from a couple days ago and they called this jays off season subtraction by addition. Said even if we had the same team as we did last year these signings make the jays significantly worse & I gotta say, I agree with them. If we don't make anymore moves at the MLB level I'm willing to bet anyone here that this jays roster not only doesn't get a wild card spot but fails to win 85 games. -

I think he would be Kevin Pillar v2.0 at the plate...but smarter on the base paths. -

“We start the off-season with a strategy to win as many games as possible given our resources and given our opportunities,” said Atkins. “Other teams’ moves or transactions couldn’t increase that anymore. The needle was already pointed at, ‘What can we do to win’ as aggressively as it can point. The other transactions couldn’t possibly make our desire or our strategy and our view more significant to try to win.” -Atkins on sportsnet sounds to me like he might as well say that they don't give a $&!# how the team does as long as it's profitable. -

I don't think you're wrong in saying that. Its not like believing in this team is an awful choice, but last year there was 4-team parity that could have gone any which way. There is a clear powerhouse team now and there's 3 teams that are pretty close. The pressure is on Biagini, Sanchez and Happ to repeat career years. Also so we need Upton, Pillar & Pearce to play their best baseball and have Tulo, Donaldson, Martin and Travis to be healthy for 150 games each. That's a recipe we need to compete for a wild card spot. -

What I don't like is our bullpen situation... but it's not our fault. The market is rediculous right now. I just think it's going to take our starters making 7 innings pretty much every outting to have a decent chance this year. I feel our chances of that improved by adding Lariano and subtracting Dickey. I feel though with the departures this year we're worse than last year and won't contend in most games where our pitching gives up 4+ runs. -

On another note I can see the Red Sox making one more deal: a swap with the Rockies to aquire Blackmon. I could very much see them trading #5,6 or 7 in their rotation as they have an abundance of possible starters and I think the Rockies would be welcome to acquiring either Bucholz, Wright, Pomeranz or Rodriguez(I'm not really sure how they rank their pitchers after Sale, Price and Porcello) -

Sarcasm detector broken I take it? I think they spend 150-160, but I think the raise in payroll that they said was just lip service. You can read this managements actions a mile away...when the off season is wrapped up, they'll blame it on the weak Canadian dollar. I don't see money as an issue for the bo sox, just a few days ago we saw them make a commitment to pay out 35million in salary to players that will be playing in the Chicago WS organization. -

I think you're right with the 150.... I bet when they said 170, they were talking in Canadian dollars which equals around where we're at right now -

You see the thing is, they will flip him in 2-3 years and probably eat an additional 25 million of his salary, to make his average about 20-21 million for 3 years to a team in need of a veteran inning eater. They'll gain a couple prospects in return too. See we here(TBJ) aren't smart enough to re-sign players even for 3 years to flip in a year or two for prospects. That's why our shelves only have 1-2 good prospects at a time at the most and that's why we miss the playoffs for 10-20 year stretches. -

Ohhh okay for some reason I thought he was turning 33...would be 34 when the season was up. 2 years younger than I thought. -

Another interesting note, we're currently shown as the 7th highest payroll in the MLB and the average is 97m this year. However there is about 15 teams with only 3-6 players signed... so I feel the average will be 120-135ish million, bringing us to about 12-15th in the league I think. But looking at our payroll we have big contracts in Tulo and Martin. I feel we'll slowly slip to about #18-22 in about 3 years. I think actions speak louder than words and Shapiro was brought in to lower payroll over a 5 year span and hopefully remain competitive to gain the most profits for Rogers inc. -

17.2/year. we'll counter by signing Kyle Drabek for 100,000 to try and compete with other minor leaguers for a MLB bullpen gig. -

I also feel now that AA was right and we had a 1-2 year window while Boston and NY were down. We shoulda have thrown money at Price for 2 reasons... 1)try to go all in 2) so that we could have a player that we could flip for assets in a depleted system. I'm thinking if we miss out this year, it's time to burn it down and rebuild for another crack in 20-25years. Another thing I wonder about, is Donaldson is a year younger than EE, so next off season we're in the same position again...what if Donaldson wants a 5 year deal for big money? I'm about 90% sure, Lowball will walk away from a big player for the 3rd year in a row without gaining any assets. -

Yea... how do you feel about Stroman? I think we should sell high. As I can't think of a single 5'7-5'8 pitcher in the league... there's a reason most of the good ones are 6'3-6'8. It puts so much strain on the body and has shown signs that his career may follow Romero's path. -

Does anyone else felt like today's signing is typical? Even average relief pitching is costing 7million, So what does Lowball North do? We go bargain shopping on a guy who had an 8.44era in the AL this past season. So we have 3-4 BP spots available and hope that we get some AA-AAA pitchers that break through??? I'm sorry but you may get 1-2 pitchers do this a year...not much chance of getting lucky 3-4x this off season at the same position. -

I feel as though Fowler is a waste of money...overhyped by playing for the Cubs. Feel that Revere is the better player for 1/3-1/4 the price. -

Funny, I'm saying that judging by Shapiro's comments today..... I feel that the jays are out on both the Division and the wildcard. -

Depends on what they want their payroll to be. If we eat the remaining 23 million they may do it straight across... -
